Next time Cano comes up with RISP, let CC hit for him.

  • http://www.puristbleedspinstripes.com Rebecca-Optimist Prime

    Probably Mike.

If Rivera can get an RBI with RISP…

  • billbybob

Can we get this guy in the rotation please?

    • whozat

If he doesn’t come out to throw the next inning, I will be cranky. At LEAST throw him more innings, Joe.

      • zs190

He might not, he threw 20 pitches and I imagine the front office thinks he’s only stretched out enough for 30-35. That’s how they handled Brett Tomko early on too.

  • Jose

No. Roy Halladay can’t handle the spotlight and big situations.

  • http://www.puristbleedspinstripes.com Rebecca-Optimist Prime

This should be fun to watch.

  • pat

    Johan, to answer your question-

Checo is a prep kid from Washington Heights, sits 90-93 with good movement on the FB and a good curve. Good size, 6’3 210. Dream is to play for the Yankees. Made a promise to his dying father (who has since passed away) to become a professional baseball player and make him proud. His HS team played their playoff games at the new stadium and he was dominant, I eat all that shit up, i love it.

Plus everybody is jumping on board with my previous favorites, manban, turley and richardson so I wanna get ahead of the curve again.

    • pat

He throws 93-95 right now,” Presbott said. “With those mechanics, you’re going to see this kid throw 96-98 one day.”

Presbott said Checo will have to shorten his delivery – along with making a few other tweaks to his mechanics – but the longtime local scout believes Yankees coaches will work quickly to fix those flaws.

“Once the Yankees get this kid and fix the mechanics, there’s no question he can throw harder,” Presbott said.

      http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/high_school/2009/06/11/2009-06-11_yankees_draft_norman_thomas.html

    • Johan Iz My Brohan

That’s the kind of kid I’d like to watch in NY. He has a reason for playing baseball, he isn’t motivated by money, and best of all he wants to be a Yankee.

      • pat

Word. he’ll definitely be somebody to keep an eye on, he just signed so he’ll pop up in the GCL sometimes soon.

    • Jack

I eat all that shit up, i love it.

      We know, pat.

      • pat

        hahaha

  • bonestock94

I hope Hughes brings this to the rotation next year, great to watch.

    • whozat

The approach, at least. I don’t expect 96-97, but 93-94 with this kind of command and confidence will go a LONG way. He also needs to develop that change, though, and I just don’t know when that’s going to happen.

      • Mattingly’s Love Child

In the Dominican with his lazy friends Cano and Melky.

      • pat

Yeah, the confidence to trust his stuff and not think he has to be too perfect will go a long way.

        • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

That, and he’ll always be able to pick Roy Halladay’s brain for some pointers here and there.

      • V

Isn’t it difficult for pitchers to throw changeup AND cutter? I’d rather he learn a splitter if he can’t get the change to work.

        • whozat

          He’s already got a change.

He’s not throwing the cutter right now either. He’s FB-curve, and sometimes a slider.

          • V

He’s ‘had’ the change for four years, and it still sucks.

His cutter, he learned in a month, and it’s already better than the changeup.

  • Johan Iz My Brohan

If Mitre doesn’t go more than 6 innings and our bullpen gets wasted ima be pissed yo.

    • Zach

      3 innings wastes a bullpen?
Ace for 2, Mo for 1.

    • Mattingly’s Love Child

Who would be the other option over Mitre? Besides Hughes….which we all know aint happenin this year.

    • whozat

Burnett went 6. Is it really a “waste” if your 5th starter goes six innings?

Really? Do you have a link or anything? I’d love to read the story behind that!

      • http://www.puristbleedspinstripes.com Rebecca-Optimist Prime

      • Zach
        • Zach

“I can’t stand the Yankees, man, and I’m going to go right after them,” he said after an outing in which he hit 100 mph on the radar gun. “But that’s just part of this game. I’m going to go right after guys.”

When asked by John Keating of Fox Sports Detroit what he doesn’t like about the Yankees, Zumaya said, “there are little things about them I can’t stand. They’re just the Yankees.”

          • putt

not mentioned in the article…”they think they’re so great just because they hit 3-run hrs off of me.”

  • putt

Send him back to the clubhouse and fire up Guitar Hero!

  • Mason

if hughes goes back out in the 8th and Mo gets it in the 9th, you can pretty much already put a W in the books

    • pat

Haha yes, if Mo comes in and saves the game in the 9th you can def call this one a win.

    • whozat

      I hope so :-)

Of course, that means that joe will throw coke at one lefty, who will get walked, and then bring in Bruney to load the bases on two walks and a K, and have to bring Mo in for 5 outs.

  • Andy Stankiewicz

I guess Zumaya really hates the Yanks now.LOL.

  • Hova

99-100 doesn’t mean crap if you throw it straight down the middle. The start of a great second half for Tex.

      • Andy Stankiewicz

        • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

“You have to win tonights game first, then worry about tomorrow”

Funny, that’s how Torre used to manage the bullpen.

          • whozat

Except he took it to the extreme that he would only use the same guys over and over, and use them in low leverage situations. If the Yankees had scored six runs, Joe T would have sent Hughes out again anyway. Or used Mo for six outs.

      • whozat

        No.

Because Aceves, Coke and everyone else will be out there.

        • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

3 tough righties coming up in the 7th tomorrow.

          • whozat

Ok. Aceves. He’s been great out of the pen. And Coke has been good against both lefties and righties. And, yes, CC is going tomorrow.

      • Nick L

C.C. pitches tomorrow i think they might take there chances using Hughes for the 8th

        • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

  • Drew

How are these guys hitting 95 mph curveballs!!?

    • ledavidisrael

IDK but Hughes is easily the best pitcher ever ive seen him throw his curve ball at 68

      68-97 mph curveball sickkk

  • pat

Thats a time when you can honestly say the hitter put a good swing on it. That ball was gonna end up in the dirt.

1.200 OPS in 91 games. Wow.

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

If they intentionally walk him every time up, he’d have just a 1.000 OPS …

        • Jose

True. But wouldn’t his wOBA skyrocket because he is still getting on base and has drastically reduced his number of outs made?

          • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

            Yes, and I was joking.

            • Jose

Yeah I figured. I saw an opportunity to check and see if my understanding of wOBA was somewhat accurate. Especially since it isn’t mentioned in the “guide to stats” section and other source material is pretty math heavy. Thanks.

        • Mattingly’s Love Child

          lmao

        • Fabio

Actually, no. He would have an 1.000 OBP, his slugging would be indetermined (0/0).

    • Steve H

Just traded for him in fantasy, just in time for him to get walked every ab.

      • pat

        that would make sense.

      • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

No doubt. Even with the AS break, you won’t see him until Monday.

The Joba Rules apply to him, too. 2IP means 2days off.

        • Zach

Yeah, so like you were saying using him for 2IP means he cant be used in teh 7th or 8th the next 2 days. pick your poison

        • whozat

1IP doesn’t mean 1 day off. Why would 2IP mean two days off?

I don’t expect to see him tomorrow, and I figure they’ll try to stay away from him Sunday, but I don’t think the Joba rules will be used here. They’ve already used him back-to-back days.

          • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Once, after an 8 pitch outing.

            http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/gamelog?playerId=28638

I’ll be shocked if he’s not done til Monday.

            • Mattingly’s Love Child

So that’s fine, let CC throw 150 tomorrow to go 8, and then use the rest of the pen for Sunday.

Seriously, with CC pitching tomorrow, it doesn’t matter (or shouldn’t matter) if Hughes is out until Monday.

              • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

OK, as long as people understand that, especially when they’re screaming about Girardi pulling him out after 1 inning when he’s pitching well.

Given that we just had the AS break, maybe Joe plays it by ear for Sunday. But under normal circumstances, he’d be gone for two days.

                • Mattingly’s Love Child

Well the semi-rational people understand that. The wing nuts out there think the Yankees went 162-0 in 1998….

  • Tom Zig

Phil should drop a deuce on santiago

  • Mattingly’s Love Child

  • Jacob

Is Phil Hughes the greatest pitcher ever?

  • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

OK, I need to update this

    2007 Joba in bullpen
    IP-24 H-12 SO-34 ERA-0.38

    2009 Phil Hughes in Bullpen
    IP-20.1 H-7 SO-25 ERA-0.89

    • Zach

but Hughes doesnt have the personality for the bullpen, Joba does

      /francesa

    • Steve H

But only one of them pumps their fist, and is therefore suited for the bullpen. That bull in a china shop, closer mentality.

      • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Yeah, my point of posting that is that Hughes has been every bit as good as Joba was in 07, but without the 100MPH gun readings and fist pumps. You don’t hear much starter/reliever debate with him, or anyone making a big deal about the ‘Joba Rules’.

        • Steve H

Let’s hope we don’t have to hear it, even if the B-Jobbers should be making the same (incorrect) argument. If Joba and Hughes had similar emotions (and fastballs) as relievers, there never would have been B-Jobbers.

  • Little Bill

Hughes threw 41 pitches. They need to stretch him out a little more and get him in that rotation.

    • V

I wonder if that’s what they’re doing, and will announce it once he’s throwing 60 pitches through 4, lol.

    • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Yeah, this isn’t working at all. Let’s change it.

      • whozat

Did anyone say this wasn’t working?

Let’s see how Sergio Mitre does in his start Tuesday.

        • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Right, so Bruney can get more high-leverage innings.

You may feel that Phil should be shoehorned back into the rotation this year, but the manager has repeatedly said he has no desire to do so.

      • Dorian

Joba for the 5th and 6th and Hughes for the 7th and 8th.

  • Drew

Best call an ump has made all year.

      • Johan Iz My Brohan

That hardly was ‘stellar’ but just wait the Red Sox Propaganda machine will write the scripts for the ESPN guys and say “CY BUCHHOLZ”

        5.2IP 4H 1R 1ER 3BB 3K 0HR

        not that good.

Bard went 1.1 innings and struck out 3, however Hughes went 2 innings and struck out 6. Too bad Bard will get more coverage…

          • Jack

How can you show consistency in one start?

            • Mattingly’s Love Child

If you are a Red Sox pitcher you can show consistency during pitches.

    • Zach

he only needed to go 5.2 IP because he knows he has the best bullpen of all time backing him up, thats smart pitching

      • Jose

All of his pitches were setting up the Blue Jay hitters for future bullpen pitches. He isn’t a thrower like Hughes and Joba, he is a pitcher.

    • JobaWockeeZ

No doubt. Oh well I’d rather listen to them sucking up to the Sox than Fox. I mean Fox reached a new low. Somehow they’ll compare him to CC and say how much better Bucholz is.

  • Brazilian Yankee

Good thing we finished the top of the 8th before the delay.

  • V

Yup, the Blue Jays roll over and die for the Sox. Color me surprised :snort:.

Vernon Wells didn’t play, stomach flu. Dan Plesac on MLB Network called baloney on it. Not sure what inside info he would have (probably none). But it is suspect to have the stomach flu in July. And actually, what the f is stomach flu? If it isn’t the flu, why call it that?

      • Zach

stomach flu = code for upset stomach, nausia, etc
the Yankees had that go through the clubhouse a few weeks ago, theres nothing suspicious about it

        • whozat

It’s kinda been going around baseball, I think. I remember hearing about another team (the Rays, maybe?) who had a bunch of guys laid up all at once too.

A syracuse athlete once told me stomach flu is just code for a bad hangover.

  • Dorian

    Pitch F/X says:

Hughes threw 32 fastballs: Averaged 94.75 and reached a high of 96.5

In the Rotation I think Phil could sit 93-94 and keep 96 in the back pocket.

    • Steve H

As good as that sounds, it’s simply not true.

      Hughes only throws 91!!!

off topic but we are in the midst of a rain delay: the mets staff says sheff left the game with just a cramp, meaning he’ll most likely be paralyzed tomorrow..

  • pat

I need a DOtF before bed, shake a leg Axisa.

YES keeps stating its Tex’s first home run since Jun 10 though he hit one Jul 12…..research fail.

  • Dorian

Hmmm… Hughes didn’t make That’s Nasty, Tex didn’t make Touch em all and Melky didn’t make web gems. Youkilis made touch em all, Bard made Nasty, and the midget made web gems. NUFF SAID

    • Brazilian Yankee

      are you even surprised?

    • Andy Stankiewicz

The Yankees have to take care of business when they face those fuckfaces in August. Then ESPN will start talking about pre season football games instead of the ass raping the Yanks will give to the Sox in the upcoming future. Sorry for the language but it is 11pm and adult swim is on so I guess anything goes.

      Their shit don’t smell… yet

  • Mattingly’s Love Child

Juan Cruz pulled a Farnsworthless….2-run hr to Longoria. Rays now are winning.

    • Andy Stankiewicz

      Longoria hit an absolute bomb.

      • Mattingly’s Love Child

        It really was.

      • Mattingly’s Love Child

BTW really glad the Yanks didn’t sign Cruz.

        • Andy Stankiewicz

Wouldnt his signing silence all the B Jobbers? “sarcasm”

          • Andy Stankiewicz

He would of been the bridge to God ummm I mean Mo.

          • Mattingly’s Love Child

Nah, if they signed him, the B-Jobbers would have wanted Cruz in the 7th, Joba in the 8th, Mo in the 9th, SIX INNING GAME!!1111!!!!!!

            • whozat

I’d be interested in Valverde. The Astros are going nowhere, and just today admitted they won’t be buyers at the deadline. That’s just one step away from realizing they should SELL. And he’s looked good, really minimizing the walks in the last couple seasons.

              • Mattingly’s Love Child

I would definitely like to see Valverde in the pen. I’m surprised the Astros admitted anything like that already. They never give up the season though, so I wouldn’t get your hopes up. The Astros may not be buyers, but they may be deluded enough to think the horses they have now are enough…

  • Mattingly’s Love Child

Hmm did everyone either go out or go to bed? Seems like it’s just me and Stankie….

  • Andy Stankiewicz

Looks like all the fans left the Stadium too.lol.

  • Brazilian Yankee

What happened to guarding the lines in the end of games?

    • Mattingly’s Love Child

      My thoughts exactly.

    • bxpd

I’ve wondered that all season and posted something like 3hrs ago regarding A-Rod playing so far off the line. I guess because they were up 2 they just played the usual defense? I’m not sure, but I’ve noticed that all season the 3rd baseman has been playing well of the line.

    • Zach

its a 2 run lead, no reason to guard the line. granderson met nothing, theres a higher probability of him making an out with ARod in normal positioning

  • Andy Stankiewicz

Jeter showing that lack of range again.

  • Mattingly’s Love Child

So why wasn’t ARod guarding the line, it being close and late?

    • whozat

Because the coaches positioned him somewhere else, maybe?

      • Mattingly’s Love Child

I guess you can’t expect Polanco to pull Mo right down the line. I feel like usually ARod plays right on top of the line when it is close and late. This seemed like a rare time when he wasn’t. That’s really the only reason I noticed it.

        • NYTraveller

His run would only get them closer and they were probably playing the percentages that he wouldn’t pull Mo extremely. I don’t think it’s a terrible call with one out.

  • Andy Stankiewicz

Goodnight guys, see ya tomorrow. Should be a good one with CC and Verlander.

  • ArodMVP217 Retire 51

    Wassup Yankees!

  • Ivan

Good for the yanks. AJ wasn’t great but he kept his team in the ballgame, Teix with the huge homer and off the yankees went.

By the way, how good Hughes man. Throwing jus gas. His FB was just untouchable and he command it very well. Just a terrific performance.
