Game 90: When last we met
Wang, pain free, to begin throwing program on Monday
  • NO Halladay

    Boston still losing?

    • Joe R

      2-6 top 8.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa
      • Jersey

Boston is, in fact, still a venture capital hotbed

        • Riddering

          Damn!

      • NO Halladay

Funny Mike, thnaks for the laugh. Have a cold one for me would ya!

  • Joe R

Surprised Melky didnt head dive for first.

    • Drew

It wasn’t funny the first time.

      • Joe R

Wasn’t a joke. Nice try tho.

  • Accent Shallow

That was a pleasant surprise — nice baserunning from Swisher.

  • Joebrah

    Pretty good stuff there.

And how many times is Melky going to make an impact late this season?

    God, I luff him.

  • Jersey

Swisher isn’t even an everyday player.

  • Accent Shallow

Do you think there are comments on some Tigers blog about how Verlander isn’t an ace since he coughed up 2 runs? Because there would be posts here suggesting that if the roles were reversed.

    • NO Halladay

Trade him to us for Wang

      • Jersey

Oh god. If Cashman could pull that off, I’d name my firstborn after him.

        • Zach

          first name brian or cashman?

          • Jersey

Both. First name would just be “Brian Cashman.”

        • Joe R

You’d name your kid Wang? You know the ramifications that could produce?

          • NO Halladay

            El wango

    • Zach

he didnt limit the damage when his team needed him to step up

    • http://www.retire21.org Mike R. – Retire 21

Your question is based on the assumption that Detroit has literate fans.

      J/K

  • Little Bill

Melky always comes through in the clutch. Those infield singles are a sight to behold. Jeter could learn something from that kid.

    • Joe R

Damn that Jeter for always making solid contact.

  • http://www.retire21.org Mike R. – Retire 21

    What’s the on-field delay?

    • Drew

      Leyland was crying about something.

    • Joe R

Aceves needed the mound reworked cause of CC’s landing spot.

    • Jersey

      Tigers fans chasing pigeons

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Sabathia keeled over and left holding his left shoulder.

I keed, I keed. They’re working on the mound.

    • http://and-that-happened.blogspot.com Evan

The groundscrew was manicuring the mound.

    • Riddering

Leyland didn’t think Ace was good enough for Verlander’s landing spot.

  • NO Halladay

I like this team alot, no Halladay needed to win this year

    • Little Bill

I agree! There’s no need to deplete the minor leaguge prospects. Critics will argue that CC is not an ace and that they have a bad record vs. 1st place teams, mostly due to their record vs. the Red Sox.

  • Accent Shallow

A balk with no runners on? Don’t see that every day.

    • http://and-that-happened.blogspot.com Evan

That was a ball call for Aceves going to his mouth while on the mound.

    • Joe R

Gave him a ball for putting his hand to his mouth.

    • Zach

he licked his hand. then tried to act like he whiped his face

  • Drew

    Mexican Gangster is not sneaky.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    That was a nasty change.

  • Jersey

Three up, three down for Boston in the 8th.

    • Zach

they’re packing it in. how could tito let his team do that?

  • Accent Shallow

    Aceves is a good pitcher.

Think Coke is “break glass in case of emergency”, or if Mo isn’t feeling well?

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Ah shit. Thank Mo for insurance runs.

  • http://and-that-happened.blogspot.com Evan

I thought Damon had room but it just kept on carrying.

  • SouthernYankeeFan

    oooof

  • Drew

    Mo please.

  • Zach

strike Cabrera out, give up HR to Thames. baseball’s funny

  • Ivan

That run Melky drove in looms just a lil bit larger.

  • NO Halladay

Pitch to him, that’s OK, better than a walk, Melky lookd even better now.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

How the hell does Marcus Thames have 98 career homers?

    • Ivan

      I know right.

When I heard that I was like whaaat.

    • Accent Shallow

Trivia: his full name is “Marcus Markley Thames”

  • NO Halladay

That means a shot of Tequilla for me as punishment!

  • Crab Dribble Ointment

Is it just me, or was there a time when Verlander was available?

    • Zach

      via trade?

      • Crab Dribble Ointment

I thought so. After his 11-17 year I could have sworn there were rumblings the Tigers were open to moving him.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Yes. During the first two picks in the 2004 draft.

      • Zach

ah Matt Bush. imagine Verlander in the NL and in PETCO?
although SD wasnt going to pay Verlander anyways right?

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Bush and Verlander both got $3.15M. Exact same bonus.

          • Zach

ok nevermind, SD messed up pretty bad then

  • Ivan

K’s Cabrera and Magglio but gives a homer to Thames.

  • Little Bill

Ace got him! Mo for the 9th to lock it down.

  • MikeD

What’s the deal with the radar guy today? Probably the worst I’ve seen all season. Two breaking balls from Aceves clocked at 91 mph. His fastball doesn’t hit 91! CC was clocked with a 97 mph curveball earlier, and a 96 mph change-up. Obviously the radar gun is broke. It’s understandable if the broadcast crew doesn’t want to highlight it’s broke, but it’s a bit ridiculous for them to have been talking about how hard Verlander was throwing, hitting 100 mph, when it’s obvious he wasn’t.

    • Accent Shallow

The YES gun is a joke, but Gameday had that alleged 100 mph pitch from Verlander as 99.4.

For some reason, the YES gun thinks everything is a fastball.

    • http://and-that-happened.blogspot.com Evan

The gun was decent for a while and now it’s back to being total crap.

      • Drew

It did have a good 1 or 2 month run.

  • Zach

    http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/s.....n-baseball

incase you didnt know, Boston’s depth is unmatchable and their rotation is sooo good

    • NO Halladay

Then why are they only 2 games ahead of us? If we would have beat them at a .500 (which could have happened) we would be in the lead.

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

If they went 2-6 instead of 0-8 they’d be a game in front right now.

    • Ivan

BBTN talked about the same thing. I gotten use to it by now.

You would of thought they had a an army of good pitchers, 100’s of thousands of them.

      • NO Halladay

ESPN is so in bed with the chowds, make me sick!

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

I know, last night they were counting Dice-K towards their depth. Did anyone bother to see how he’s pitched this year?

        • Zach

          dont forget Masterson

        • Ivan

What got me mad was when they showed Bard k’ing guys and mking Buchholz performance seem incredible (when it was just avg) but didn’t give Hughes air time with his tremendous performance.

  • NO Halladay

When was the last time the yanks traded a good prospect? Last year when they traded for Nady? Tabata that turned out to be ok?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Tabata, but his stock was dropping. Before that … Dioner Navarro?

    • Drew

Are you saying the ship has sailed on Tabata?

      • NO Halladay

        Is he in AA now?

        • Drew

He’s been in AA for a year and a half.

          • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

And he’s still young for the league.

            • Drew

True I know. I hope it ends up that it was a good deal for us but it’s about 4 or 5 years too soon to make that call.

              • NO Halladay

We can always swipe him back when he’s a Free Agent

  • http://www.retire21.org Mike R. – Retire 21

    Some insurance would be nice.

  • Ivan

    When is Verlander a FA?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

After 2011 I believe. Detroit will sign him before that.

  • Salty Buggah

    Let’s go Mo

  • NO Halladay

Enter Sandman is pumping at home!

  • Zach

could you imagine batting with 2 strikes against Mo? its just like- fuck

  • Johan Iz My Brohan

    I love the Mo zone!

  • Brazilian Yankee

    Signature play.

  • Salty Buggah

    Check out Jeter

  • Zach

but his range! and his arm!

  • Joebrah

    God.

    Jeter sucks.

    Zero range.

  • NO Halladay

    Good night!

  • Ivan

Mo has 3 BB this year. 3. Just 3.

That’s MLB The Show video game #’s.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

And one of those walks was intentional.

      • http://www.geeks2you.net Marc

        Insane. Absolutely insane.

      • Riddering

        I’d forgotten about that!

        Mo has just been nasty.

  • Accent Shallow

    Yay Mo! Yay win!

  • Zach

this was one of the best wins of the season IMO

  • Ivan

Yanks win and now are only 2 games back.

  • Jake H

Good win against a very good pitcher who was dealling.

  • Salty Buggah

    Mo-money

  • Riddering

We won the series but you know the “Yanks can’t win against division leaders” meme will live on.

    • Crab Dribble Ointment

Is it a meme when it’s pretty damn true up to this point?

I’m not saying the mass panic was warranted, but 2-8 coming into this series isn’t impressive any way you spin it.

      • Riddering

I think it is when people disregard series we won against teams that led the division when we played them.

It’s not absolute nonsense like some criticisms but it’s a huge talking point for Yankee haters and a life-raft for masochistic fans. I mean, when even my local West MI paper has a blurb on Yankees being “destroyed” by division leaders I have to start rolling my eyes.

  • http://www.geeks2you.net Marc

    CC “Gritmonster” Sabathia

    Kim… “How gritty was he?!?!?@!#!@#@!”

  • Salty Buggah

    CC, a black dude, gritty?

    • Ivan

      Hard to believe yeah.

  • Andy in Sunny Daytona

Boston trade Penny to Texas for Smoak and Andrus.

    • Salty Buggah

      really?

      • Salty Buggah

I mean I cant be surprised. They’ve got like 55272 Aces waiting. And that’s all they get?

      • Andy in Sunny Daytona

No. Actually it was Penny to the Cardinals for Pujols and Rasmus.

        • Riddering

          Boston was robbed.

    • Zach

Texas has to throw in Feliz too, and take back Lugo because they need a SS

  • MikeD

Is the Yankee-Red Sox head-to-head record masking that the Red Sox are not as good as some people think?

Here’s the Yankees and Red Sox records against the rest of the AL:

    Yankees 43-21 .671 —
    Red Sox 36-28 .562 7 games back

It’s obvious is the Yankees did their job when playing the Sox, they’d be ahead by a pretty good margin.

  • Jersey

Ballgame over in Toronto, Jays win 6-2.

  • Ivan

I wonder who gets the championship belt this game? Gotta be CC right?

    • Jersey

      +1

      ARod a close second

    • Little Bill

No. It’s gotta be Melky Cabrera for that clutch infield single.

  • Andrew

Must have had to wait a while to use that “Swisher is useless” mock. Guy has been straight bad since late April, no doubt about it.

    • Jack

      June: .253/.379/.506

      No doubt, eh?
