Game 148 Spillover Thread

By

No need to pinch hit. I’m sure Cervelli needed the rest.

Categories : Game Threads

Seemed to call for Hinske as PH

With Jorge’s suspension, it means Cervelli would go the rest of the way, with no backup – something Girardi wants to avoid

Sadly, if not for that broken finger, we *might* have see the Jesus in the Bronx

    • Brazilian Yankee

      I’m sure Swisher can catch!

      • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

Who do you think taught Johnny Bench how to catch?

        • Jack

Nick Swisher one played a game of golf without clubs. He shot a 17.

    • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

      I highly, highly doubt that.

    • Jersey

He wasn’t even on the 40-man, was he?

Didn’t see the game so I’m assuming from the start ownage AJ is back?

      Crisis: OVAH

    • Jon

not really. He was ok. More like a shitty Mariner line-up and a couple of breaks. (2 pick-offs).

    Mike Axisa says:

It’s okay, not like there’s two other catchers on the bench.

There’s only ONE other catcher on the bench at the moment. Axisa TEH EPIC FAIL

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Actually, I thought Posada would appeal mid-game.

Still, dumb not to pinch hit.

      • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

No, I got you. Just messin with ya.

        (gives Axisa a noogie)

        NOW LET’S KILL THESE FUCKERS!!!!!

David Cone needs to do ads for Fan Graphs.

  • Zack

PH for Molina and you’re left without a backup catcher for the rest of the game. With 10 as the magic number theres no need to force someone (Hairston? I think) into emergency catcher and risk further injury.

    /looking at it another way

  • King of Fruitless Hypotheticals

that wasn’t the worst possible outcome…worst is him collapsing AFTER he hit the grounder to short clutching his popped hammy…

  • Brazilian Yankee

    Hate those weak hits.

  • MikeD

Ichiro’s hitting style is the equivalent of a knuckleball pitcher. I know there’s talent here, but it pisses me off!

  • Salty Buggah

Woohoo I made it back and the game’s only in the 7th. So what’s happened so far? I see AJ has been good with his typical 3 walks and 6 K’s. Is his box score as good as he’s pitched?

Freakin Ichiro with 3 hits again!

  • King of Fruitless Hypotheticals

ichiro, in response to being asked why he doesnt bunt for a hit 2x a game, said ‘father’s dont bring their sons to baseball games to see me bunt.’

i shed a single, solitary, there’s hope left for humanity tear.

    • LiveFromNewYork

      I love Ichiro quotes.

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

Haha, that’s twice that Gutierrez has fouled off pitches on which Ichiro would’ve stolen.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Ichiro would be a god if he played in NY. He’d make Jeter look like Wayne Brady.

    • MikeD

Really, Mike. I can’t remember the last time Jeter was picked off twice in a game. (Couldn’t resist!)

Yeah, off the heel of the glove. He probably wouldn’t have gotten him anyway, though. Just goofin.

  • MikeD

Those two Ichiro pick-offs might have cost the M’s this game. Both times, hits followed.

  • Brazilian Yankee

    Great start, AJ!

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

I know Jeter’s been real good on defense this year but he still needs to work on his range to his right.

    • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

Granted, he probably wouldn’t have gotten FG on that.

  • MikeD

Up until tonight, has AJ picked anyone off? Pettitte picking off the same guy in a game wouldn’t be surprising (well, I guess it would since most runners stay close to the bag against him now), but I don’t remember AJ picking off a runner before tonight and to do it twice in a game would be surprising, to do it twice against the same runner is more surprising, and the to do it twice against Ichiro is…

    • King of Fruitless Hypotheticals

      surprising?

          phranchise is good at baseball.

      • MikeD

Over the years, there are three hitters that I always hated seeing come up against the Yankees in a key situation, because I was always sure it was going to end badly for the Yankees. George Brett, Manny Ramirez and Ken Griffey Jr.

The Kid is past his prime, so I sometimes forget how badly he used to punish the Yankees, but I’m still not comfortable when he comes to bat.

  • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

I love watching Ken Griffey Jr’s swing.

    • King of Fruitless Hypotheticals

      Me too.

      • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

Meh, I’m not talking about this game, just in general. His swing always was a thing of beauty. It’s too slow to be effective now, but it’s just sweet to look at. He’s like never off-balance.

Griffey, Manny, Frank Thomas, and Strawberry are probably my four favorite swings ever (from my lifetime only, of course).

        • King of Fruitless Hypotheticals

you like the poetic swings…i like the anarchic swings.

to wit: sheff. wtf? love it.

despise: that fucked up dude from boston who wont put two hands on the bat.

          • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

Heh. Sheff is funny. I like it too, just because it’s so ungodly violent at all times.

          • Bob Stone

That dude from Boston has one of the strangest batting stances ever. He looks sort of effiminate the way bounces around in the box and has his right hand sort of caressing the bat with only a couple fingers.

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

Hughes has damn good back leg drive and gets a lot lower than I thought he did. I like it. If he keeps that up as a starter, that’ll keep the velocity up.

Most frustrating GOOD Yankee pitcher ever:

Jimmy Key. He was money, but I could not STAND watching his games. Nothing but nibbling, nibbling, nibbling all night long. Raised my blood pressure and took forever.

  • LivefromNewYork

Why did he swing at that? what the hell is that noise?

  • alex gonzalez

    no pinch runner for arod?

    • Jack

Why would he need a pinch-runner?

      • alex gonzalez

i said this after he got he his single. mind as well, you have a massive bench tonight. try and steal a base with a pinch runner. avoid making him stress the hip. it was just a suggestion.

        • Jack

What does “mind as well” mean?

          • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

            It could of meant something.

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

It’s still a close game, they might need his bat later. I’m not worried about his hip, they were just off yesterday and have a day off a week the rest of the way.

          • alex gonzalez

why is everyone going crazy over such a small move? this game means basically very little in the grand scheme of things. give a chance for guys on the bench to try and steal a base and bring someone in to play defense for arod. i was just suggesting it wouldn’t do any harm to have someone come in for him. i didnt realize having someone pinch run for him was like me making a grady little like move in the ALCS.

            • Jack

              Dude, noone is going crazy.

          • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

Yes, but Mike, you forget: He sucks and is a clubhouse cancer. You’ve got to remove him from the game at the first possible opportunity because he’s horrible.

Now, if that’s Michael Young, that’s a whole different story. Michael Young is the balls. If I could have any single third baseman in all of baseball, I’d definitely take Michael Young, not ARod, David Wright, or Evan Longoria, those pathetic turdburglars. It’s all Mikey Yizzy in the Hizzy, my Nizzy!

            Sincerely,
            alex gonzalez

but is he one of the greatest pitchers any of us will ever see take the mound? yes, and don’t forget it. i don’t feel bad for the juiced up hitters who were getting dominated by a juiced up pitcher.

  • Cy Farnsworth

2 funny things about king felix’s excellent outing tonight:

    1) in 9 innings of work, getting over and covering first on the last out of the 9th was one of his better plays (and one that absolutely no one will remember)

S0 glad I stayed up for that.

  • Mouch “Half Man Half Couch”

    Ichiro >>>> Mo

  • bobtaco

With first base open, and Ichiro hot as hell, how does Girardi not call for the IBB there?

    • LivefromNewYork

Because Mo thinks he can strike him out.

      • bobtaco

He didn’t even need to hit a HR, a single would have tied it.

I don’t understand how you even let Ichiro beat you in that situation. Don’t even give him the chance.

        • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

My retort: We still don’t care about these games. Still meaningless.

AJ pitched well. That makes this game a moral victory. The most important task was accomplished.

  • Bob Stone

    I thought God was perfect.

  • Henry

    Well,

better blow the save now than in an important playoff game

Mom is trying to tell me not to be upset. In the long run, I won’t but how can I not be stunned.

  • Bob Stone

That’s one of the most disappointing losses of the year.

Most frustrating Yankee pitcher ever: Mariano Rivera.

What a horrible, pathetic loser that guy is.

    • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=siYKRL4I3UA JobaWockeeZ

How many wins does he have? Pathetic. He fucking sucks. He should have walked Ichiro because he is such a God awful pitcher.

      • bobtaco

No, Mo doesn’t suck. No one is saying that.

Sometimes you have to play smart and maximize your chances to win the game, even with the best pitcher on the mound.

  • danny

    ugh.

  • http://www.twitter.com/hopjake Jake H

That ball Ichiro hit was in the batters box. I do wonder if they need to start going away to start guys off.

    • The Three Amigos

Or how about going away to a guy who is already out of the batters box before he swings. He cant hit a home run on an away pitch, since he has zero momentum that way. Stupid call by Molina.

      • Zack

dude, posada called that pitch from the clubhouse

  • Brazilian Yankee

I hope Girardi learns with his mistakes. First, the decision to not PH for Molina was just terrible and it might have cost us the game, one extra run would have made a huge diference. Second, the only guy on the other team who can hit is this guy called Ichiro, it’s inexcusable to pitch to him there. That one definately cost us the game. Just a terrible job by Girardi…

    • Bob Stone

      This is totally Girardi’s loss.

      • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

        Hold on one second…

Okay. I just got off the phone with Girardi. He said, and I quote: “I don’t give a shit. Been on autopilot all month.”

    • LivefromNewYork

Mo thinks he can strike him out. Period.

    • Zack

      there goes teh division!!!!!!!!!!!

    • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=siYKRL4I3UA JobaWockeeZ

      Yeah it’s “inexcusable.”
So when Girardi calls for the IBB on Longoria it’s fucking retarded.
When he doesn’t on Ichiro. he’s retarded.
      IT’S MO. 2 outs.

      • Brazilian Yankee

It’s the right call to walk the other team’s best hitter if you can. No matter who the pitcher is. If you have a chance to face a 99 OPS+ hitter instead of a 127 OPS+ you should do it eleven times out of ten.

        • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=siYKRL4I3UA JobaWockeeZ

Then why don’t we see IBB’s every game?
Why is no one bitching about this until a loss occurs?

        • Zack

no, because you dont put the winning run on base. a bloop double or a misplay and he scores.

and when your closer have a ERA+ of 268, you dont have to IBB anyone

    • bobtaco

      +27

  • LivefromNewYork

AJ was good, Hughes was good, Mo was good. But Ichiro got to him and that’s base-fucking-ball.

Maybe we shouldn’t salivate over Felix pitching 9 and losing before he’s actually lost.

That’s why they play 9 innings.

    • Andy

      Mo wasn’t good

      • SF Yanks

Mo WAS good. Ichiro hit a ridiculous pitch inside. He made ONE bad pitch to the batter before. Gimmie a fuc*ing break.

  • bicycle boy

oh well, it was bound to happen. just shake it off and win the game tomorrow with CC on the mound.

  • charlespoet

well that blows. Oh well, win the next two and move on to the “whatever their name is Angels.”

  • Matty Ice

You don’t put the winning run on first. What if the next guy hits a double in that cavern? You’d be second Girardi either way.

Tough fucking loss, and at the hands of one of the players I hate the most in this league. But what are you going to do?

    • Todd

You do if the winning run is .350 and the guy on deck is .270.

    • bobtaco

with two outs, I take my chances with Gutierrez.

      Don’t let Ichiro beat you.

      • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

With I don’t care how many outs, I’ll take my chances with Mo against anyone.

        Every time.

    • Brazilian Yankee

Two hitters, one with a 99 OPS+ and the other one with a 127 OPS+. Who would you rather face?

  • danny

k well i’d rather he got that outta his system now then come october, now go away trolls.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Just the 2nd and 3rd earned runs Mo’s allowed since June 12th.

  • Snoogens

….and this is why we should never forget Pearl Harbor. (In all seriousness,I am flabbergasted this is garbage)

  • Andy

    AJ pitched a gem

  • Mouch “Half Man Half Couch”

Justice is kinda served. The King went 9 and deserved to win.

  • Chef

Who cares? I’d rather them lose like this than A.J. have another bad start…

All in all, Good game in the long run for the Yanks.

    • http://www.workwithpete.com Pete

Not me – if AJ gives up 6 runs in the 4th, I’d be in bed already, sad but resting comfortably.

Now I’m up at 12:51am and pissed off, and there’s no beer in the fridge.

    • Andy

      Who cares? WTF

      • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=siYKRL4I3UA JobaWockeeZ

This game is meaningless. Yankees are still going to the playoffs regardless. They will probably win home field too.

So losing a game to a frontline OMFG WTF pitcher, on the west coast with a hgue lead should not lead to much concern.

Mo is part human. Sometimes he blows saves. Good thing it happened in a meaningless game. AJ Burnett was dominant. That’s the most important thing about the game and he was great.

Sure it sucks but who cares?

    • Mouch “Half Man Half Couch”

Good game? AJ pitched good yes but this is a horrible loss. Girardi should of walked The Assassin Ichiro, you have to in that spot. Also Joe should of pinch hit for Molina when they had 1st and 3rd and one out. Hopefully Joe will learn from his mistakes. The Yanks still have the best record in baseball. Case closed.

      • Jack

        Should have.

      • Jersey

This really isn’t that horrible, brah.

      • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

AJ pitched good yes but this is a horrible loss.

There’s no such thing as a “horrible loss” when you have a magic number of 10 with 30 combined games left on the schedule for the Yankees and Red Sox.

The last “horrible loss” we had was in June.

  • Todd

The pain of the loss was oddly eased by the hilarious home plate celebration. Ichiro is one of my favorite all time players.

With that said, he is the only guy in the lienup that can hurt you. I was saying “walk him” as he was walking to the plate. I wonder if Girardi was gun shy because having Mo issue an IBB bit him in the behind earlier in the season. That pitch wasn’t a bad pitch. Ichiro is just that good.

    • LivefromNewYork

I like Ichiro. I think Girardi lets Mo do what he wants after that IBB earlier. I think Mo just hates IBBs and there ya go.

Mo has faith in his stuff and he should.

  • Andy

Girardi will cost us in October

    • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

      Tonight’s game: Not October

      • Mouch “Half Man Half Couch”

If he manages like an ass in Oct. he will cost the Yanks.

        • LivefromNewYork

Well he’s managed to get us TO October, so I’ll trust what he does.

        • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=siYKRL4I3UA JobaWockeeZ

It’s Mariano Rivera the best relief pitcher in the history of the game. I have faith in him to get him out.

He didn’t. He’s part human. He made a mistake. Blaming everything on Girardi is one of the most annoying things I ever heard.

          It’s fucking Mariano Rivera.

        • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

And the reason why you can’t assume that he’ll manage like an ass in October based on a game in September is because that game in September IS NOT A FUCKING GAME IN OCTOBER.

      • Andy

A nice preview. Aj vs a top pitcher. On road. This was a playoff preview. Don’t discount it

  • Jersey

I’ll just have to find a way to live with two out of three.

  • http://www.repairmycomputer.com Marc
  • LivefromNewYork

Yeah, Mo is incredible and if Ichiro hit a homer off him, good for Ichiro (or anyone else). You can’t really get mad about that.

    • http://www.workwithpete.com Pete

The way that double was just smacked, I almost expected Ichiro to tie the game. Never saw a HR coming, though.

      • bobtaco

EXACTLY. So if a single ties the game, why let the best contact hitter in the last 50 years BEAT you.

  • Cy Farnsworth

i’m with matty ice’s comment above. you never put the winning run on base (and ichiro’s speed makes it an even dicier proposition–he’d score on a gapper.)

when you have mariano rivera on the mound with 2 outs, you have to have faith in letting him get the 3rd.

99 times out of 100 the yankees win tonight. i can live with having just watched the 1.

    • Bob Stone

Got to like the positive attitude.

  • Andy

this is the only place where people excuse a bad loss like this.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

You’ve got to chill. The only reason you think it’s a bad loss is because it ended like it did. If AJ gives up 3 over 7 IP and it ends 3-2, no one gives a shit.

Who cares, they’re still in first, still have the best record in baseball. If you can’t brush this loss off, then you take it too seriously.

    • Jersey

Maybe you should go to one of those other places?

      • Andy

This isn’t a tough loss?? We saw a great game n we saw our manager make some boner moves. We can’t discuss that? No ones jumping off a bridge

        • Jack

Like what? Letting Mariano Freaking Rivera pitch to a guy?

          • Jack

            Shit. HTML fail.

Like what? Letting Mariano Freaking Rivera pitch to a guy?

This really, truly isn’t a tough loss. And everything Girardi did was defensible. He’s still my dawg.

        • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

          This isn’t a tough loss??

(doublechecks calendar to make sure it’s still September 19th)

(doublechecks standings to make sure we still have a magic number of 10 and a playoff expectancy of over 99%)

Nope. Not remotely. The last tough loss we had was in June.

    • Zack

yeah we should all be crying about a team thats going to win 100 games and lost one because Mo gave up a walk off

  • Mo’sTheMan

Great win tonight. I went to the men’s room after Mo got the first two outs, but I guess he got the third one before I got back. Satisfying 2-1 win for AJ, with the save for Mo.

Wow. Just wow. I blew off an 18 year old girl who wanted to go on a date tonight, cuz we had a pitchers duel going and I wanted to see the Yanks stick it to the King. Now I don’t get to watch a win, and I don’t get laid. Double dutch.

    • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

      Go buy a TiVo.

  • LivefromNewYork

Starting pitcher sucks or defense commits a ton of errors or umps make bad crucial calls or offense doesn’t wake up against a lousy pitcher = bad loss.

AJ pitches well, Hughes pitches well, offense gets some off a great pitcher and Mo gives up a walkoff = not a bad loss.

    • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=siYKRL4I3UA JobaWockeeZ

Add the fact that it’s on the West Coast where they don’t play as well, and the fact this game means nothing, and the increased confidence in the playoff rotation with AJ pitching a gem.

  • Bob Stone

What happened to Girardi’s left eye. Did he get hit in the brawl the other night?

    • LivefromNewYork

      why yes he did.

    • MikeD

      Yes.

    • Zack

he asked Mo to IBB Ichiro so he bitch slapped joe

  • MikeD

A 9th inning loss always sucks, especially when it’s a HR off Mo, but if the Yankees had won but AJ had pitched poorly, I’d probably be more concerned. We need a him at the top of his game come October and tonight was a good sign.

    • Bob Stone

      +27

  • Jamie G.

Walking Ichiro there was the biggest no brainer in the history of earth. I have never hated a Yankee manager more than I do Girardi…he is so clueless sometimes I wonder how he could have possibly gotten the job at all. Even Mo knows you should walk Ichiro there.

    • LivefromNewYork

If Mo WANTED to walk Ichiro he would have.

    • Zack

where was your post saying they should IBB ichiro before the HR?

That’s not the way hindsight works – OH WAI-

    • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=siYKRL4I3UA JobaWockeeZ

Even Mo knew? So the best relief pitcher in the history of baseball was scared when of a batter that is 2 for 10 lifetime against him?

Why do I not believe you.

I don’t know why people aren’t bitching about the non walk when they NEVER bitched about this before.

      • LivefromNewYork

        so true.

    • Bob Stone

Singleton and Cone and Girardi all made a good point. You don’t walk a guy with Ichiro’s speed because a gapper brings in the winning run. I was mad at Girardi too during the game but when you think about it, walking Ichiro is very questionable, especailly with Mo on the mound.

  • LivefromNewYork

Where are all these whiners when WE have a walkoff? (which is, like, a lot of the time)

    • Zack

      Answer: because Mariano is pitching

    • Jack

      Doesn’t matter. Mo’s pitching.

    • Bob Stone

Gutierrez – an above average hitter.

Here’s a question. Y even pitch to ichiro? Base open. Who’s even behind him????

My answer: I couldn’t care less.

      • Andy

Yea. Great managing. Base open n pitch to their only hitter. Keep defending that

        • Jack

          Mariano Rivera.

Dude, 99 times out of 100 they win the game with a runner on 2nd and two outs. This was the one.

        • Zack

Where was your post about IBB ichiro before the HR? 2nd guess the manager after the fact, keep defending that.

          • Jamie G.

I was watching the game and not sitting at my PC…There are Two players in mlb that u walk in that situation, no matter who is pitching…Ichiro and Mauer. If there is a guy at first, of course you dont walk him, but with a base open, its a no brainer. Franklin Gutierrez on Deck…111 SO’s, .750 OPS…an easy out for Mo. If Ichiro only gets a single there it is still a tie game…that is what makes pithing to him even more rediculous. There is having confidence in your HOF pitcher and there is stupidity…This decision was purely uncalculated on Girardi’s part.

Here is my question: who asks a question like this? We all know why Mo pitched to him…because he can and usually does strike him out….because Ichiro does have speed and the guy behind him is not a scrub.

So how can you even ask this question yet alone OVER AND OVER AGAIN

Two articles will dominate the paper in the coming days:
    1. Another rash of A.J./Molina articles
    2. Mo is losing it articles.

      They practically write themselves.

to go along with #2, how Cashman failed for not getting Billy Wagner and not moving Joba to the pen

    • http://www.teamnerdrage.com leokitty

TWO BLOWN SAVES! Clearly he’s done for!!

Mariano when he’s only okay is still at the very least as good as most of the closers hanging around MLB.

    Damn. That is all.

    • http://and-that-happened.blogspot.com Evan

Yup. Bad way to end the game but they’ll get them later today.

  • Bob Stone

I still can’t believe Teixeira ran down Ichiro on the first pick-off play.

  • http://www.teamnerdrage.com leokitty

Only whine I’ve got is letting Molina hit for himself, which angered me at the time. The outcome there was inevitable.

Mariano’s meh months are the same as everyone else’s good months so pardon me if I’m not worried.

Ok, last comment for the night. Many of you need to chill. I am more critical of meaningless Yankee games than most and even I recognize that these game mean little more than HOW QUICKLY THE YANKEES WRAP THINGS UP.

There is no fucking way they are losing the division or home field. So my recommendation is to step away from the computer. Go tell your kids you love them, go tell your wife or girlfriend you love her and move on. It is one game.

Yankees will still take 2-3 from Seattle and the Red Sox will lose at least 1 to Baltimore – there by reducing the Yankees magic number to 7 by Monday morning.

October magic is in the air, don’t try to piss on the fire, you might get burned.
