Game 148 Spillover Thread

No need to pinch hit. I’m sure Cervelli needed the rest.

Categories : Game Threads

  1. scooter says:

Seemed to call for Hinske as PH

With Jorge’s suspension, it means Cervelli would go the rest of the way, with no backup – something Girardi wants to avoid

Sadly, if not for that broken finger, we *might* have see the Jesus in the Bronx

  2. JobaWockeeZ says:

Didn’t see the game so I’m assuming from the start ownage AJ is back?

  3. Mike Axisa says:

It’s okay, not like there’s two other catchers on the bench.

There’s only ONE other catcher on the bench at the moment. Axisa TEH EPIC FAIL

  4. David Cone needs to do ads for Fan Graphs.

  5. Zack says:

PH for Molina and you’re left without a backup catcher for the rest of the game. With 10 as the magic number theres no need to force someone (Hairston? I think) into emergency catcher and risk further injury.

    /looking at it another way

  6. King of Fruitless Hypotheticals says:

that wasn’t the worst possible outcome…worst is him collapsing AFTER he hit the grounder to short clutching his popped hammy…

  7. Brazilian Yankee says:

    Hate those weak hits.

  8. MikeD says:

Ichiro’s hitting style is the equivalent of a knuckleball pitcher. I know there’s talent here, but it pisses me off!

  9. Salty Buggah says:

Woohoo I made it back and the game’s only in the 7th. So what’s happened so far? I see AJ has been good with his typical 3 walks and 6 K’s. Is his box score as good as he’s pitched?

Freakin Ichiro with 3 hits again!

  10. King of Fruitless Hypotheticals says:

ichiro, in response to being asked why he doesnt bunt for a hit 2x a game, said ‘father’s dont bring their sons to baseball games to see me bunt.’

i shed a single, solitary, there’s hope left for humanity tear.

  11. Haha, that’s twice that Gutierrez has fouled off pitches on which Ichiro would’ve stolen.

  12. Mike Axisa says:

Ichiro would be a god if he played in NY. He’d make Jeter look like Wayne Brady.

  13. Mike Axisa says:

Picked off Ichiro twice. Wow, just wow.

  14. Bob Stone says:

Unbelievable – Ichiro picked off TWICE!

  15. The ball beat him.

  16. King of Fruitless Hypotheticals says:

as a happy aside, the giambino throws both of those into left field :)

  17. MikeD says:

Those two Ichiro pick-offs might have cost the M’s this game. Both times, hits followed.

  18. Brazilian Yankee says:

    Great start, AJ!

  19. I know Jeter’s been real good on defense this year but he still needs to work on his range to his right.

  20. Jersey says:

Up next, The Hughes and Mo Show

  21. Joe LA says:

Here’s a thought. If AJ Burnett throws a brushback pitch with his ‘ELECTRIC STUFF’,

technically wouldn’t he be giving them a Lectric shave?

Come on. Someone’s visualizing the ad right now.

  22. Salty Buggah says:

Whoa, Felix is in there still?

  23. Jake H says:

    I miss me some DOTF

  24. Watching this game tonight, I can’t decide if Felix Hernandez looks like a fat thin guy or a thin fat guy.

  25. King of Fruitless Hypotheticals says:

felix throws a nine inning two run loss :)

  26. Salty Buggah says:

    Felix has sexy stuff…

  27. If Coke faces Griffey, I’m gonna be kinda peeved.

  28. King of Fruitless Hypotheticals says:

you know, we got a lot of under 300 hittin mofos on this team…

  29. MikeD says:

Up until tonight, has AJ picked anyone off? Pettitte picking off the same guy in a game wouldn’t be surprising (well, I guess it would since most runners stay close to the bag against him now), but I don’t remember AJ picking off a runner before tonight and to do it twice in a game would be surprising, to do it twice against the same runner is more surprising, and the to do it twice against Ichiro is…

    • King of Fruitless Hypotheticals says:

…is not impressed with ol’ man griffey, and wins by challenging him with heat.

      good job kid :)

      • King of Fruitless Hypotheticals says:

…is not impressed with ol’ man griffey one nut, and wins by challenging him with heat and a wicked curve. good job kid :)

      • MikeD says:

Over the years, there are three hitters that I always hated seeing come up against the Yankees in a key situation, because I was always sure it was going to end badly for the Yankees. George Brett, Manny Ramirez and Ken Griffey Jr.

The Kid is past his prime, so I sometimes forget how badly he used to punish the Yankees, but I’m still not comfortable when he comes to bat.

  30. Hughes has damn good back leg drive and gets a lot lower than I thought he did. I like it. If he keeps that up as a starter, that’ll keep the velocity up.

  31. Ivan says:

Hughes Just bitch smacked Hall there.

  32. Brazilian Yankee says:

  33. Cy Farnsworth says:

come on bill hall, you know you never had a chance there

look on the bright side, you didn’t have to face mo

  34. charlespoet says:

love watching the hughes… first two fast balls to Beltre said ” Hello bitches, hit me”. HA!

  35. Dirt says:

I mean I guess that was OK

  36. charlespoet says:

Hello my name is Phil HUGHES> See this fastball, Fuck you! HAAAAAAA! Finally this guy is turning into all the hype… Love it!!!!!!

  37. Ivan says:

If A-Rod keeps this up, he might make it to the HOF.

  38. Salty Buggah says:

A-rod takes a lead in the A-rod/Tex Batting Average Race.

  39. King of Fruitless Hypotheticals says:

ok, night gang, see you sunday…tomorrow is ‘lake day’ the sacred ritual of the rememberance of the day man and woman became husband and wife, celebrated by having the kid spend the night somewhere else and baseball/internet/iphone apps/texting/discovery-history-espn-nat geo channels are all forbidden.

    yay me?

  40. scooter says:

    Jeterian swing from ARod?

  41. Bob Stone says:

All time most frustrating Yankee pitchers (not necessarily in order of frustration level):

    1)Hideki Irabu
    2)Ed Whitson
    3)Kevin Brown
    4)Kyle Farnsworth
    5)Carl Pavano
    6)Jose Contreras
    7)Kei Igawa
    8)Chien Ming Wang – 2009 Edition Only

  42. LivefromNewYork says:

Why did he swing at that? what the hell is that noise?

  43. alex gonzalez says:

    no pinch runner for arod?

  44. Salty Buggah says:

Looking at Swish’s face right there, I would not want be near him.

  45. LivefromNewYork says:

Nick does not look happy. Stole his dog indeed.

  46. LivefromNewYork says:

    Comon Robbie.

  47. While watching Jose Molasses plod down the line after grounding into an inning ending DP, I say to myself in only the most childish way possible, “Montero can’t stick behind the dish because he’s tooooooooooooo biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig.”

This Molina isn’t exactly moonlighting for the flying trapeze.

I just had to get that out of my system.

  48. Bob Stone says:

Best name of a Yankee pitcher of all time:

    Urban Shocker

Runner’s Up – Slim Love and Dazzy Vance

  49. Marc says:

Who was the last Yankees pitcher to win the Cy Young? What year was it?

  50. Cy Farnsworth says:

2 funny things about king felix’s excellent outing tonight:

    1) in 9 innings of work, getting over and covering first on the last out of the 9th was one of his better plays (and one that absolutely no one will remember)

    2) he’s going to lose

    isn’t baseball fun?

  51. Zack says:

    Mo v Hannahan/Johnson/Wilson

    advantage Mo?

  52. Salty Buggah says:

Pinch hitting with a lefty against Mo is stupid.

  53. Marc says:

With a good postseason, could Mo take the Cy Young? ESPN has a cy young predictor,
and it shows Mo at #3, before CC. Could he really take it??

  54. Bob Stone says:

    One more K Mo.

  55. LivefromNewYork says:

    Mo is not amused.

  56. charlespoet says:

My name is Mariano, You killed my father, prepare to die!

  57. LivefromNewYork says:

    Oh wtf

  58. Mouch "Half Man Half Couch" says:

    No big deal…….yet.

  59. MikeD says:

Thanks god we’re not in Yankee Stadium on that hit.

    Walk Ichiro.

  60. Cy Farnsworth says:

    well, that was unexpected.

  61. Congrats to Mo hitting the 1000 K.

And then some turd hits a 2B.

  62. Bob Stone says:

Gardner would have caught that ball!!!!

  63. Salty Buggah says:

  64. Cy Farnsworth says:

wow, don’t think anyone saw that coming.

  65. LivefromNewYork says:

You’ve got to be kidding me.

  66. MikeD says:

I said walk, him, damn it!

  67. Mouch "Half Man Half Couch" says:

This will set the tone for the rst of the west coast series….Mark my words.

  68. bicycle boy says:

  69. Zack says:

    holy shit?

  70. charlespoet says:

Hey dumbass, I am Mariano, watch this strike!

  71. Bob Stone says:

That didn’t really happen . . . did it?. Should have walked Ichiro. Dumb.

  72. Jersey says:

    Well. Hrm.

    Didn’t see that coming.

  73. aj says:

    1st base was open wtf.

  74. Marc says:

umm. What? Ichiro can has homerun?

  75. Tony says:

    Me: “Wow.”

    Mo: “Wow.”

    ESPN: “MMMmmmmmmugggghhhhhhh *splish*”

  76. Mike Axisa says:

Well, it was what, 34 in a row? It was bound to happen sometime.

  77. LivefromNewYork says:

    They should have walked him.

    • scooter says:

2 for 10 lifetime with no HRs

I don’t think you walk the go-ahead run, unless it’s Barry Bonds, Ortiz or Manny in their primes

Mo missed his spot. Big time

  78. Hmmm… maybe we shouldn’t have picked him off twice.

  79. JobaWockeeZ says:

So uhh… does Felix get the win?

  80. Pete says:

So much for the league leader in ground balls.

  81. LivefromNewYork says:

S0 glad I stayed up for that.

  82. Mouch "Half Man Half Couch" says:

    Ichiro >>>> Mo

  83. bobtaco says:

With first base open, and Ichiro hot as hell, how does Girardi not call for the IBB there?

  84. Bob Stone says:

    I thought God was perfect.

  85. Henry says:

better blow the save now than in an important playoff game

  86. aj says:

    That just ruined my week.

  87. JobaWockeeZ says:

Cue in the never seen before trolls…

  88. Andy says:

Y the fuck did they pitch to him????????

  89. Evan says:

Mom is trying to tell me not to be upset. In the long run, I won’t but how can I not be stunned.

  90. Bob Stone says:

That’s one of the most disappointing losses of the year.

  91. Most frustrating Yankee pitcher ever: Mariano Rivera.

What a horrible, pathetic loser that guy is.

  92. Jake H says:

That ball Ichiro hit was in the batters box. I do wonder if they need to start going away to start guys off.

  93. Brazilian Yankee says:

I hope Girardi learns with his mistakes. First, the decision to not PH for Molina was just terrible and it might have cost us the game, one extra run would have made a huge diference. Second, the only guy on the other team who can hit is this guy called Ichiro, it’s inexcusable to pitch to him there. That one definately cost us the game. Just a terrible job by Girardi…

  94. LivefromNewYork says:

AJ was good, Hughes was good, Mo was good. But Ichiro got to him and that’s base-fucking-ball.

Maybe we shouldn’t salivate over Felix pitching 9 and losing before he’s actually lost.

That’s why they play 9 innings.

  95. bicycle boy says:

oh well, it was bound to happen. just shake it off and win the game tomorrow with CC on the mound.

  96. charlespoet says:

well that blows. Oh well, win the next two and move on to the “whatever their name is Angels.”

  97. Matty Ice says:

You don’t put the winning run on first. What if the next guy hits a double in that cavern? You’d be second Girardi either way.

Tough fucking loss, and at the hands of one of the players I hate the most in this league. But what are you going to do?

  98. danny says:

k well i’d rather he got that outta his system now then come october, now go away trolls.

  99. Mike Axisa says:

Just the 2nd and 3rd earned runs Mo’s allowed since June 12th.

  100. Snoogens says:

….and this is why we should never forget Pearl Harbor. (In all seriousness,I am flabbergasted this is garbage)

  101. Andy says:

    AJ pitched a gem

  102. Mouch "Half Man Half Couch" says:

Justice is kinda served. The King went 9 and deserved to win.

  103. Chef says:

Who cares? I’d rather them lose like this than A.J. have another bad start…

All in all, Good game in the long run for the Yanks.

    • Pete says:

Not me – if AJ gives up 6 runs in the 4th, I’d be in bed already, sad but resting comfortably.

Now I’m up at 12:51am and pissed off, and there’s no beer in the fridge.

    • Andy says:

      Who cares? WTF

      • JobaWockeeZ says:

This game is meaningless. Yankees are still going to the playoffs regardless. They will probably win home field too.

So losing a game to a frontline OMFG WTF pitcher, on the west coast with a hgue lead should not lead to much concern.

Mo is part human. Sometimes he blows saves. Good thing it happened in a meaningless game. AJ Burnett was dominant. That’s the most important thing about the game and he was great.

Sure it sucks but who cares?

    • Mouch "Half Man Half Couch" says:

Good game? AJ pitched good yes but this is a horrible loss. Girardi should of walked The Assassin Ichiro, you have to in that spot. Also Joe should of pinch hit for Molina when they had 1st and 3rd and one out. Hopefully Joe will learn from his mistakes. The Yanks still have the best record in baseball. Case closed.

  104. Todd says:

The pain of the loss was oddly eased by the hilarious home plate celebration. Ichiro is one of my favorite all time players.

With that said, he is the only guy in the lienup that can hurt you. I was saying “walk him” as he was walking to the plate. I wonder if Girardi was gun shy because having Mo issue an IBB bit him in the behind earlier in the season. That pitch wasn’t a bad pitch. Ichiro is just that good.

    • LivefromNewYork says:

I like Ichiro. I think Girardi lets Mo do what he wants after that IBB earlier. I think Mo just hates IBBs and there ya go.

Mo has faith in his stuff and he should.

  105. Andy says:

Girardi will cost us in October

  106. Jersey says:

I’ll just have to find a way to live with two out of three.

  107. LivefromNewYork says:

Yeah, Mo is incredible and if Ichiro hit a homer off him, good for Ichiro (or anyone else). You can’t really get mad about that.

  108. Cy Farnsworth says:

i’m with matty ice’s comment above. you never put the winning run on base (and ichiro’s speed makes it an even dicier proposition–he’d score on a gapper.)

when you have mariano rivera on the mound with 2 outs, you have to have faith in letting him get the 3rd.

99 times out of 100 the yankees win tonight. i can live with having just watched the 1.

  109. charlespoet says:

Are people really that upset? who gives a rats ass….. See you in October bitches with three champagne toasts – ALDS, ALCS, AND #27 WS….ALL IS RIGHT IN THE UNIVERSE.

  110. Andy says:

this is the only place where people excuse a bad loss like this.

  111. Mo'sTheMan says:

Great win tonight. I went to the men’s room after Mo got the first two outs, but I guess he got the third one before I got back. Satisfying 2-1 win for AJ, with the save for Mo.

  112. Important lessons learned from tonight:

    1) AJ does not suck

    [end of list]

  113. Marc says:

Wow. Just wow. I blew off an 18 year old girl who wanted to go on a date tonight, cuz we had a pitchers duel going and I wanted to see the Yanks stick it to the King. Now I don’t get to watch a win, and I don’t get laid. Double dutch.

  114. LivefromNewYork says:

Starting pitcher sucks or defense commits a ton of errors or umps make bad crucial calls or offense doesn’t wake up against a lousy pitcher = bad loss.

AJ pitches well, Hughes pitches well, offense gets some off a great pitcher and Mo gives up a walkoff = not a bad loss.

    • JobaWockeeZ says:

Add the fact that it’s on the West Coast where they don’t play as well, and the fact this game means nothing, and the increased confidence in the playoff rotation with AJ pitching a gem.

  115. Bob Stone says:

What happened to Girardi’s left eye. Did he get hit in the brawl the other night?

  116. MikeD says:

A 9th inning loss always sucks, especially when it’s a HR off Mo, but if the Yankees had won but AJ had pitched poorly, I’d probably be more concerned. We need a him at the top of his game come October and tonight was a good sign.

  117. Jamie G. says:

Walking Ichiro there was the biggest no brainer in the history of earth. I have never hated a Yankee manager more than I do Girardi…he is so clueless sometimes I wonder how he could have possibly gotten the job at all. Even Mo knows you should walk Ichiro there.

  118. LivefromNewYork says:

Where are all these whiners when WE have a walkoff? (which is, like, a lot of the time)

  119. Andy says:

Ok. Here’s question. Y even pitch to ichiro? Base open. Who’s even behind him????

  120. Two articles will dominate the paper in the coming days:
    1. Another rash of A.J./Molina articles
    2. Mo is losing it articles.

  121. Bob Stone says:

I still can’t believe Teixeira ran down Ichiro on the first pick-off play.

  122. leokitty says:

Only whine I’ve got is letting Molina hit for himself, which angered me at the time. The outcome there was inevitable.

Mariano’s meh months are the same as everyone else’s good months so pardon me if I’m not worried.

  123. charlespoet says:

Ok, last comment for the night. Many of you need to chill. I am more critical of meaningless Yankee games than most and even I recognize that these game mean little more than HOW QUICKLY THE YANKEES WRAP THINGS UP.

There is no fucking way they are losing the division or home field. So my recommendation is to step away from the computer. Go tell your kids you love them, go tell your wife or girlfriend you love her and move on. It is one game.

Yankees will still take 2-3 from Seattle and the Red Sox will lose at least 1 to Baltimore – there by reducing the Yankees magic number to 7 by Monday morning.

October magic is in the air, don’t try to piss on the fire, you might get burned.
