ALDS Game Three Spillover Thread III

What the hell is the point of pulling Andy when he was at 81 pitches? He wasn’t struggling. Like, at all.

Categories : Game Threads, Playoffs

  1. ashish says:

joba throw that slider down down down down down!!!

  2. JMK aka The Overshare says:

There is a heretic questioning the wisdom of the Great Girardi. What shall we do with him?!

  3. Jersey says:

And putting in Joba to boot. Seem like two bad decisions regardless of outcome.

  4. Pasqua says:

He is Joe Girardi and YOU WILL REMEMBER HIM!

  5. JobaWockeeZ says:

Heh well I just noticed CC, Aj and Pettitte combined gave up less earned runs than Josh Beckett.

    Massive ESPN fail.

  6. mustang says:

This shit is killing my BP

  7. lily-bk says:

girardi is obsessed with this bullpenn. and he over manages way to much

  8. AndrewYF says:

He was struggling in the last inning. What are you talking about?

I would have supported the move if they’d gone to Hughes, but they went to Joba. That worked out, but I don’t think it was the right move.

  9. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

  10. Mouch "Half Man Half Couch" says:

After 81 pitches? The way Andy was dealing?
    I can’t wait to hear Joe’s explanation.

  11. Karen says:

Agree, I have no clue why Pettitte was taken out. He did not look tired. I was sweating it out there. I assume Hughes or Coke will come in in the 8th?

    • AndrewYF says:

I want to know why anyone who has watched this team all season would think that Phil Coke would start the 8th inning with a one-run lead.

  12. Spaceman.Spiff says:

Well the bright side is, I feel more confident throwing him out when we really need him after this performance. He allowed a double but worked out of it which he hasn’t been great at lately. Either way, gotta like our chances from here on out.

  13. crapulent aka I said good day sir says:

How can moves that work out not be the right move? You can say hypothetical scenario A or B would have been better but you can’t prove it. The one that worked out IS the right move.

  14. lily-bk says:

k we need some insurance runs , hughes was really shaky and i dno moe hasnt been as sharp either

  15. Matt M. says:

They want to establish Joba and his confidence moving forward throughout the playoffs. Sending a message to the Angels that our bullpen is bout to make games 6 inning affairs

  16. slappy white says:

Of topic but still sweet….How great is it that Papelbum blew a 2 run lead to end his teams season ?

  17. alittleblackegg says:

I think Girardi’s decision was wrong too, BUT the appeal of going with your hard throwing BP after your opponents have adjusted to the soft tossing lefty is strong, right? Plus strikeout guys = less balls in play, less left up to chance.

  18. Kevin G. says:

Guys, George is having a party!

  19. Drew says:

My name is Andrew Santoro and I’m a whiner:

The Yankees manager, Joe Girardi pulls the starter too early.

  20. Ivan says:

Well we can go either way with this arguement, fact is yanks still lead going to the 8th, so that’s what matters.

  21. Joe D. says:

    “Productive Outs?”

How ’bout this: the Yanks lead all of baseball in Productive Homers.

  22. MikeD says:

Pettitte would have been out there through the 8th as long as he was strong and pitching well, which he was. Removing him after 6.1 innings and 81 pitches was not the right move. He’s owned Minnesota through the years and he’s a big-game pitcher. I think Joe has done a great job with the pen the two years with the Yankees, but he does go a bit into over managing at times.

    Enough of that. Go Yanks!

  23. JMK aka The Overshare says:

We’ve been swinging at garbage all night.

  24. Swisha Claus says:

A theory: Mebbe Girardi isn’t overly concerned about the Twins at this point (I’m not), and wanted more data on Joba as leverage reliever for upcoming roster decisions. That or he’s dumb.

  25. Vinny says:

    A “Jeter sucks” chant? Really?

    • mustang says:

      love the hate… more hate

    • JMK aka The Overshare says:

That’s pretty bush league. I was at Game 2 and there was a “Boston sucks” chant and I was a bit ashamed. But Jeter? Really? He’s about the most likable guy in baseball.

      • crapulent aka I said good day sir says:

Yes, at the end of the game going out there was a Boston sucks chant and I was a bit ashamed too. It blew my total high a little bit. Very bad form Yankee fans to act like the RS Nation.

    • baba o'riley says:

i don’t feel bad about (hopefully!) sweeping this team. any backwater minnesota hillbilly that chants “jeter sucks” certainly deserves to see their team get blown out. some day these jerks will be falling all over themselves in praise during jeter’s goodbye tour.

  26. Rob H. says:

it’s 2-1 and the comments are littered with people who are upset that Girardi went with his shut-down bullpen. It worked, yet you all are complaining as if the Twins took the lead.

  27. cjc says:

hmm a jeter sucks chant now thats a first

  28. Brazilian Yankee says:

Let’s hope Phil is up to the task tonight.

  29. JSquared says:

Amazing how all of our groundballs go right to a fielder… There’s, the yankees usually have to chase.

  30. cjc says:

    hope hughes is sharper tonight

  31. Mike Axisa says:

Hopefully Mo’s getting ready. First sign of trouble for St. Phil, yank him. Go for the jugular.

  32. lily-bk says:

can’t we have a nice quick 1-2-3 ining like that?

  33. Camilo Gerardo - your inception? fuck perception, go with what makes sense says:

    Were they chanting, “Jeter Sucks?”

  34. ansky says:

Wondering when the rest of this lineup is going to start hitting. Insurance runs would be nice.

  35. Ivan says:

    Lets go Hughes.

  36. Moshe Mandel says:

It was not the right move. You want to limit the number of pitchers who throw in the game- you don’t want to search for the guy who does not have it that night. You could have gone Pettitte-Hughes-Rivera, there was no reason to add a pitcher to the mix.

  37. crapulent aka I said good day sir says:

Jeter once did a Top 10 List on David Letterman and it was things people don’t know about Derek Jeter and one was, “When opposing fans chant ‘Yankees suck’ it really hurts my feelings.”

  38. JSquared says:

Let’s go punto… he has to be the worst player that is idolized…

  39. Riddering says:

Shit, Punto the Yankee killer is leading off.

  40. Camilo Gerardo - your inception? fuck perception, go with what makes sense says:

Don’t walk Punto again, Master Phil

    • Camilo Gerardo - your inception? fuck perception, go with what makes sense says:

guess you got to mix it up a little more…

  41. Ivan says:

    OMG!!! Im speechless.

  42. lily-bk says:

    great hughes just fkkn great

  43. Brazilian Yankee says:

    Phil can’t handle the pressure.

  44. JSquared says:

So… let’s play no singles defense?

  45. mustang says:

    FUCK !!!

  46. JMK aka The Overshare says:

Damon and Melky with the UZR!

  47. Ace says:

I hope Chip Caray dies. Die die die.

  48. JobaWockeeZ says:

    Fuck it, I’ve had enough.
    *Presses mute button*

  49. Brazilian Yankee says:

And why is Damon out there still?

  50. danny says:

    lets go huuuuuuuuughesss.

  51. Pasqua says:

    Fuckity-fuck-fuck. FUCK.

  52. jkiv says:

i think hughes missed his sport on every pitch so far. he looks really bad

  53. Mike Axisa says:

Just go to Mo. Squash this shit before it gets out of control.

    • whozat says:

      It’s true.

That play was awesome, but it looks like we found Hughes, the guy who doesn’t have it tonight. Everything he gets in the zone is up.

  54. Frankie says:

Time to set up the DP and get Robertson in there.

  55. ansky says:

    Fucking Puto!!!

  56. JobaWockeeZ says:

    HAHAHAHHAHA!!! Jeter FTW!!!!!

  57. Henry Triana says:

  58. JGS says:

  59. Brazilian Yankee says:

  60. JMK aka The Overshare says:

What the fuck was Punto thinking?

  61. Swisha Claus says:

  62. Riddering says:

Punto plays the game the Right Way.

  63. Drew says:

  64. Dela G says:

  65. ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops says:

What a series for Nick Punto!!!

  66. JSquared says:

  67. donttradecano says:

Poor twins baserunning. What a killer.

  68. Pasqua says:

HOLY SHIT! Was that Jeremy Giambi on the basepath?!!!!!

  69. Vinny says:

How about that Jeter sucks chant now??

  70. Matt M. says:

add that play to the Jeterian mystique

  71. cjc says:

gritty and gutty I would say what a baseball player

  72. e mills says:

    “what a series for Punto”

  73. dkidd says:

    suck it punto!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  74. Karen says:

YAHOO! Stupid base running by the Twins. Go Yanks!

  75. Spaceman.Spiff says:

  76. Nick Punto is a baseball player.

  77. slappy white says:

  78. Frankie says:

Damn … Punto looks like he’s about to cry.

  79. Jackson says:

    Punto fail

  80. danny says:

  81. mustang says:

    yesssssss…… JETER what?

  82. AndrewYF says:

Holy shit, Nick Punto is the worst fucking player in baseball.

  83. Mike Axisa says:

Punto made that blunder the right way, so it’s okay.

  84. Upstate Nick says:

Hahahahaha, yes, suck it Chip Caray and your rampant Twins-fellating.

    Awesome play.

  85. Jake H says:

Has posada forgotten about Hughes curve?

  86. Swisha Claus says:

Jeter can’t go to his left.

  87. MikeD says:

Wow. They did it again. And by they, I mean the Twins.

  88. crapulent aka I said good day sir says:

    I’m so glad Jeter sucks.

  89. AJ says:

YES! This team has made the defensive plays when necessary (and the Twins have been terrible.) That play is just like the Giambi play . What a Jeterian thing to do.

  90. Tony says:

    But.. bu.. Jorge can’t throw!

  91. Brazilian Yankee says:

Now that we got that out of the way, do your job Phil.

  92. Spaceman.Spiff says:

New meaning to the phrase Jeterian Range. File that away.

  93. Will says:

Plays like those are what make Jeter so good!

  94. The universe wants us to win. The Fates have spoken.

  95. Ivan says:

    Wow….just wow.

  96. jkiv says:

    10/11/09: Robertson > Hughes

  97. Vinny says:

Do you bring in Mo to face Mauer?

  98. Upstate Nick says:

I think that brings the series count of “Punto facepalms” for Ron Gardenhire to 3.

  99. Peedlum says:

Jete shows his amazing presence of mind yet again. Twinkies have had some problems at second, Jeter has been a part of them. Awesome, awesome plat.

  100. Keanu Reeves says:

How did Jeter make that play with an average UZR?

(Even though it wasn’t average this year)

  101. Drew says:

It’s amazing how many of you have no confidence in our team. Ya’ll wild.

  102. Brazilian Yankee says:

So, do we trust Phil against Mauer? Or is it Coke? Or is it Mo?

    I hope it’s Mo.

  103. Karen says:

They still have a runner at first. Double Play here would be nice to avoid Mauer and further tense situations. These last five outs will be the end of me.

  104. Frankie says:

So my guess is Joe G will brink in The Coke Man for Mauer?

  105. Ivan says:

This would be Hughes last batter.

  106. crapulent aka I said good day sir says:

    Past a diving….oh. wait.

  107. Spaceman.Spiff says:

Lol, I hope OCab tries to break his bat again.

  108. Camilo Gerardo - your inception? fuck perception, go with what makes sense says:

    who else wants a curveball?

    • whozat says:

If Hughes doesn’t want to throw it, then he shouldn’t throw it.

He’ll need it next year, though. Hopefully, he’ll still have a good one.

  109. ShuutoHeat says:

    I’m a bit sadistic.

I LOVE WATCHING this Minnesota crowd and their facial expressions when the Twins get pwned repeatedly. There’s no apparent pain on these fans’ faces, but you know deep down inside they’re just hurting and they want to cry.

  110. crapulent aka I said good day sir says:

Twins: we would win if we could get past second base.

    That’s what she said.

  111. Pasqua says:

    Mo, please.

  112. AndrewYF says:

    Bring in Mo.

  113. Mike Axisa says:

Mo time. Don’t fuck around with Mauer.

  114. JSquared says:

    God’s Pitching… Game Over.

  115. dkidd says:

    love this ad

  116. Brazilian Yankee says:

    Mo in. Absolutely right call.

  117. danny says:

    may mo be with us.

  118. Vinny says:

How’s that for not over-managing the bullpen? Mo time.

  119. Swisha Claus says:

Mo to close out the Metrodome.

  120. Bob Stone says:

Thnaks Joe Girardi – Mo – Our best against their best with the game on the line. I love it.

  121. Camilo Gerardo - your inception? fuck perception, go with what makes sense says:

I’m going to file this under “not an issue”

  122. Tom Zig says:

    Epic battle coming up

  123. Karen says:

Gotta go to Mo. If we lose, let’s lose with our best. Hopefully this will be quick and painless and we will be doing the champaign thing inside of 15 minutes.

Then we can figure out how to beat the Angels with half of our line-up not hitting.

  124. AJ says:

Hey Joe, you’ve finally done something correct by bringing in Mo. Let’s let the Sandman rock the Twinkies to sleep.

  125. Riddering says:

Fifty shots wouldn’t be enough for me to give a second glance to romance novel cover guy.

  126. mustang says:

Jeter’s agent on the phone right now with Cashman:

I though this be a good time to talk contract.

  127. dkidd says:

look at jorge giving mo shit

  128. danny says:

i shouldnt be nervous, but i am.

  129. JGS says:

    Mo >>>>> Mauer

  130. JSquared says:

    Mauer Fail… !!

  131. Camilo Gerardo - your inception? fuck perception, go with what makes sense says:

    Classical Mariano

  132. Dela G says:

    bye bye mvp

    too easy for mariano

  133. Bob Stone says:

    Thank MO!

  134. Mike Axisa says:

Classic, classic Mo. Broken bat groundout.

    Three outs.

  135. Brazilian Yankee says:

Joey boy, that’s how a cutter tastes.

  136. dkidd says:

    classic mo

    breaking bats, breaking hearts

  137. Jake H says:

I wonder if Papsmear is watching Mo try to see how it’s done.

  138. Upstate Nick says:

    Vintage Mo

  139. JSquared says:

    Runs please.

  140. Dan S says:

Shattered that bat just like the Twins hope

  141. Dave says:

Heh, remember when Cody Ransom was our starting 3rd baseman?

  142. Ivan says:

God Damn that cutter was wicked.

  143. AJ says:

Mariano Rivera – Breaking bats since 1995.

    • whozat says:

He should have started a bat company instead of a steakhouse.

Or, at least, invested in Louisville Slugger.

  144. lily-bk says:

its horrible of me to compare but i just hope that during the nottom of the ninth moe doesnt pull a papelbon!

  145. ShuutoHeat says:

    Mo and the golden pitch.

  146. I seriously don’t know why any of you people ever have a doubt or a fear.

  147. MikeD says:

Running past its alloted time? Did they really think this game would come in under three hours? As is, it’s been a pretty quick game.

  148. JMK aka The Overshare says:

Has Damon even fouled a ball off yet? Holy fuck.

  149. crapulent aka I said good day sir says:

JD is like STFU I have a pretty wife and a foul pole in my yard Chip you ass.

  150. Vinny says:

Here’s hoping against the Golden Sombrero.

  151. dkidd says:

how long longer does girardi stick damon in the two hole?

    /that’s what she said’d

  152. Brazilian Yankee says:

    Damon has to be hurt.

  153. Bob Stone says:

C’mon guys – some insurance runs please.

  154. AndrewYF says:

Amazing that the Twins didn’t go to their best reliever in this situation. Nathan must be truly spooked.

    • NYTraveller says:

Caray: Two solo home runs the sum total of the Yankee offense tonight (shakes head in disgust)

Two is enough when the other guys have one, dope.

    • ShuutoHeat says:

I heard he still rolls up into fetal position in the corner of the clubhouse from time to time.

  155. JSquared says:

    and… Damon wants a contract… hmm… doesn’t look like it.

  156. MikeD says:

Damn. Is Damon having vision problems again?

  157. danny says:

    Damon :(

  158. ansky says:

    Damon has been God-AWFUL!!!

    • AndrewYF says:

Well, so have Cano and Swisher. Are we going to worry about them too?

At least no one is 0-for the series.

  159. Salty Buggah says:

    Ugly Damon…Ugly

Hope you show up in the ALCS

  160. JSquared says:

    Ball 5 to Teixeira…

  161. JMK aka The Overshare says:

We all still want to re-sign Damon? (For the record I do, but I’m curious to hear the thoughts of others.)

  162. Vinny says:

Hope that foul ball hit Caray.

  163. Ivan says:

    Cashman looks pretty fuckin calm.

  164. ansky says:

How about some insurance runs just for shits and giggles?

  165. Salty Buggah says:

They should IBB A-rod, even with Tex on.

  166. Drew says:

4 days off couldn’t really hurt JD.

  167. NYTraveller says:

    A little A-Rod insurance?
