Breaking News: Cody Ransom gets his World Series ring

By

I know you were all worried, but our long national nightmare is over. Conor Foley reports that before last night’s Triple-A Scranton game, manager Dave Miley presented Cody Ransom with his 2009 World Series ring. Ransom was in town with the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs, Philadelphia’s Triple-A affiliate. Last year’s Opening Day third basemen put up a sparkling .265 wOBA for the Yanks, and prior to the season some people actually thought he was a better option than Alex Rodriguez. I can’t seem to find that article online anymore, though.

So, how long until it ends up on eBay?

  1. ewww, he did nothing but hold the fort for a-rod early in 09, which he did MISERABLY

  2. pat says:

Good for him. Despite the fact that he was a pretty sub par baseball player I never harbored any ill will towards the guy. He’s been through a lot in his career and that ring will be a reminder of the year he was the Yankees Opening Day 3B.

    • chriskeo says:

I kinda agree, I liked the guy for what he was, which I know is not much, just an example of fans falling in love with a backup player.

  3. Mark from Chicago says:

For all the fun we make of him, remember he has a ring and we don’t!

  4. 28 this year says:

    “Breaking News” lol.

  5. Why so much mockery? He’s a career minor-leaguer, he got his chance with the Yankees, and he performed like a career minor-leaguer for one month. Not really a big deal. Unless I’m missing something here.

    • Beamish says:

      That.

No need to be churlish, Mike. Cody Ransom did not say he was better at third base than A-Rod. Some hack writing about baseball said it – and that hack will never get a World Series ring.

      Congratulations to Cody.

    • Wisdom. says:

Thats what I’m thinking. The guy is just a baseball player that tried to fill a role he was incapable of filling. Regardless of his performance he was a part of a team that won a world series and they gave him a ring as a sign of respect. The dude still has way more baseball talent then anyone posting here.

      • Spaceman.Spiff says:

No one said they were more talented than Ransom. Nor did anyone say that Ransom was a bad person. The post seemed to be mocking the dumb writers who actually irresponsibly threw out the idea that Ransom might be a better fit for the Yankees than A-Rod at third, and I see nothing wrong with that.

  6. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Darn, we should have made him jump for it!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7XZX946hWI

(just needed an excuse to bring back my favorite Ransom moment)

  7. Cecala says:

    BUT HE CAN JUMP BOXES!!!1!1!1!1!!1!11!

  8. cr1 says:

I’m pretty sure that most of the people making snotty comments like Mike’s will never spend a month playing in the big leagues. Let alone for the Yankees.

I’m glad for Ransom that he got that much of his dream, and a ring to show his grandchildren.

    • Zack says:

      ??

So because most of us wont ever play in the majors that means we’re not allowed to point out bad journalism?

      • Beamish says:

So, how long until it ends up on eBay?

        Not about bad journalism.

        • Zack says:

That line was less offensive than people writing that this team is better off with Ransom than ARod

          • radnom says:

So, that bad writing was less offensive then the holocaust?

Comparing something to something worse but unrelated to justify it is enormously retarded.

            • radnom says:

Not that I think Axia’s line was that offensive, he surely meant it in jest. I was just reacting to your absurd rebuttal.

            • Zack says:

People are getting worked up because of a sarcastic remark Mike made at the end of a paragraph about a bad baseball player that some wanted on the team instead of ARod.

              • radnom says:

No. If you read the post you’re replying to (and several others) you will see that it was the eBay comment that (most) everyone got riled up about. What that has to do with Ian Oconnor is beyond me.

      • Wisdom. says:

Some say that RAB is bad for journalism. Some agree, some may be right. The point is that RAB posting things like this is irresponsible and disrespectful.

    • pat says:

Joke’s on you!!!!!!!! Mike Axisa is actually a pseudonym for Steve Balboni.

  9. And I can finally sleep at night

  10. Riddering says:

I don’t think the mockery is directed at Ransom himself but the way he was vaulted by certain writers and over-utilized occasionally.

    • Wisdom. says:

Ok, so here is the basic problem. It’s a 100 level college course lesson:
Last year’s Opening Day third basemen put up a sparkling .265 wOBA for the Yanks, and prior to the season some people actually thought he was a better option than Alex Rodriguez. I can’t seem to find that article online anymore, though.

If you can’t cite a source for information you’re going to use then you probably shouldn’t be using it; yet alone be publishing it.

      • Big Juan says:

        Relax. It’s called a joke.

        • Wisdom. says:

And that’s why you cite a source… I am relaxed by the way. Why so defensive, you aren’t Mike Axisa.

          • Spaceman.Spiff says:

He can’t cite it because the author took the said article down, not necessarily because he’s being irresponsible.

          • Big Juan says:

I’m hardly being defensive. You, on the other hand, seem to be taking offense to anyone challenging your posts.

      • Jim S says:

It’s a running joke. The author who published said article rescinded it later in the season. This isn’t exactly secret, ground-breaking information.

      • pat says:

Why don’t you stop trying to be the internet police and chill out.

      • Mike Axisa says:

I can’t cite the article in question because it was taken down after widespread ridicule. It came from Ian O’Connor though.

So talk about me being irresponsible and what not, but at least you can find every stupid thing I’ve ever written on this site.

        • Wisdom. says:

I will give you a cheer to that, you don’t back into a corner like most. Ransom is a good dude; he was put into an impossible situation and failed like expected. He got a ring and he should get a ring. This is just a cheap laugh at the expense of another.

        • Jose says:

Here is the relevant section of the Ian O’Connor piece:

“The Yankees have no interest in devaluing an asset like Rodriguez, not when they have nine years to go on a contract worth more than $300 million. So they’re not about to declare themselves a better, happier team with A-Rod on the bench. But facts are facts: The Yankees haven’t reached the World Series in Rodriguez’s five seasons, and they reached six in the eight seasons before he arrived. Coincidence, or guilty as charged?”

          • bexarama says:

ESPN New York everyone. (I know he didn’t write that on ESPNNY, but seriously. These are the people they have writing for them.)

            • bexarama says:

also Wallace Matthews called A-Rod’s contract the worst deal in sports history prior to 2009. What do you even say to that?

              • Pat D says:

I have done everything in my power to not read anything posted on that site, mainly because the writers they have seem to be…pathetic, at best.

    • bexarama says:

I don’t think he was so much vaulted as much as writers were shockingly stupid about A-Rod.

  11. Jose says:

Congratulations to Cody. I hope he keeps the ring and the memories associated with it. I don’t know why you would suggest he wouldn’t

  12. Jersey says:

    Cody Ransom: 1
Everybody Else Without a World Series Ring: 0

  13. Yanks28th says:

Hey, come on, don’t be so harsh on Codey Ransom. Look, I know all the talk last year was insane, and it annoyed me too. But Ransoms a good guy, no need to take a shot at him. I mean it wasn’t like he had an attitude problem and called himself better then A-Rod, it was the media and dumb fans. He’s a humble, god work ethic guy. I didn’t know he was in Triple A, I thought he was released and with another team.

    • Zack says:

He’s playing with the Phillies’ Triple-A team

      • Pat D says:

Right here in the good ol’ Lehigh Valley. I work within walking distance of their park, but I haven’t been. Because it’s the Phillies. And they haven’t had anyone worth watching. I’m going to try to go this year when Scranton’s in town so I can see Montero, though.

  14. Spaceman.Spiff says:

When did RAB get so touchy? About Cody Ransom of all players too, lol.

    • pat says:

      Well, we’ve always been touchy.

      /Puts arm around Spaceman Spiff.
      //Drops something into drink.

    • Salty Buggah says:

Today is the day everybody woke up on the wrong side of the bed at once. That or either they don’t get the joke. No one is attacking Ransom or saying that he wasn’t a good.

      • ultimate913 says:

“No one is attacking Ransom or saying that he wasn’t a good.”

        I hate cliffhangers.

        • Salty Buggah says:

Heh, meant to say he wasn’t a good person but feel free to fill in the blank as you wish.

        • bexarama says:

yeah, that could go two ways:
          1. “good person” Sure. I’m sure he’s very nice IRL.
          2. “good player” I’m pretty sure there aren’t too many people out there who think Cody Ransom was a good player. Except my mom.

      • Jose says:

Try seeing from the casual reader point of view. They read this article and take it as a cheap shot as a player who was part of a World Championship. Just because someone reacts negatively to that type of article doesn’t mean they “woke up on the wrong side of the bed”.

I thought the article was funny as it referenced the Ian O’Connor article incident, but did think the last line was in poor taste.

Mike made a choice to put it to be funny, some people thought it was, others thought it was disrespectful. That happens sometimes when you make jokes. Talk about both opinions being totally blown out of proportion.

        • Salty Buggah says:

I see what you’re saying and you’re right. The thing is that people have explained it to him in the comments yet he still didn’t get it. However, I agree that both opinions were blown out of proportion and I am guilty of that.

    • Zack says:

West Coast start times makes everyone uneasy apparently

  15. Pat D says:

NoMaas, as is their tendency, was pretty harsh on Ransom last year. They said that he must be The Most Interesting Man in the World due to the fact he still got AB’s after ARod came back and wasn’t producing at all. I believe the picture they made is still on their main page banner.

  16. Tom Zig says:

    Marte fail

  17. Brian says:

Remember Pete Abe claiming the Yanks were “better off with Ransom at 3rd over ARod”?

    because…

a.) he wasn’t as much of a distration

That was Pete Abe’s only reasoning. Thank god he isn’t covering the Yankees anymore. What a joke.
