Game 72: Crap, another bad pitcher
ByEarlier this year the Yanks were scheduled to face Dontrelle Willis, but he was a late scratch. The Yanks ended up facing a string of Tigers relievers, demonstrating mostly futility against them. The Yanks lost the game, managing just four runs off the Tigers six relievers. Dontrelle has since been designated for assignment and sent to the Diamondbacks, where he’s allowed seven runs through 15 innings. long the way he’s walked more than he’s struck out, and holds a 1.80 WHIP.
Stephen R. explored the Dontrelle saga today at TYU, so in case you’re not up on tonight’s starter give that a quick read.
Posada gets the night off tonight, which makes sense for a number of reasons. Using him on back-to-back nights and then giving him two nights off is probably physically for the better. Also, it gave him a chance against Haren, while the Yanks might not need their best lineup against Dontrelle. Then again, considering how they’ve hit in the past week-plus against poor pitching, maybe I shouldn’t be making that assumption.

Can we all just collectively laugh at the idea of Francisco Cervelli protecting the best hitter in the league?
Just the mention of Dontrelle’s name bums me out. He was so exciting, so much fun to watch a few years ago and he seemed to lose it for reasons that have never been fully explained. There have been hints at his delivery, but it’s not like he blew out his shoulder or something.
My guess is his conditioning and delivery were the problem. Just a guess.

Agreed. One of those guys that was just exciting to watch, and baseball is a sport where if you aren’t a fan, games are a bore. Dontrelle was one of those guys that even non-baseball fans might tune into watch, because it was a show.
Completely agree. I don’t need the guy to be a Cy Young candidate, but it’d be nice if he was at least a #3-4 starter.

Dontrelle has actually been non-awful against lefties this year: .197/.289/.273 this year, although only 77 PA. Does have a 26/8 K/BB ratio, though.

As bad as Willis was that inning, one would have a pretty decent argument that the Yanks’ baserunning was even more craptastic. Some of the dumbest baserunning you’re going to see in 1 inning, considering the context.
I think that argument would be correct. It is beyond moronic to hand two free outs to a pitcher who clearly can’t throw strikes. They better buck that trend from hereon in and actually make Willis get them out.
