Game One: Opening Day

(AP Photo/Frank Franklin II)

It’s been five long, generally boring months without meaningful Yankees’ baseball, but that all comes to an end today. Game one of 162 (and hopefully more) will be played in the Bronx today, even if Mother Nature isn’t fully cooperating. It’s overcast and chilly and it’s been drizzling all morning, but the weather is only going to get worse tonight and tomorrow. They’re likely to play at least part of the game through some rain or mist, but that’s life. Yankees’ baseball is back, and as cliche as it sounds, the quest for #28 starts now. Here are you lineups…

Austin Jackson, CF
Will Rhymes, 2B
Magglio Ordonez, RF
Miguel Cabrera, 1B
Victor Martinez, DH
Ryan Raburn, LF
Jhonny Peralta, SS
Brandon Inge, 3B
Alex Avila, C

Justin Verlander, SP

Brett Gardner, LF
Derek Jeter, SS
Mark Teixeira, 1B
Alex Rodriguez, 3B
Robbie Cano, 2B
Nick Swisher, RF
Jorge Posada, DH
Curtis Granderson, CF
Russell Martin, C

CC Sabathia, SP

First pitch is scheduled for 1:05pm ET, thought there will be some pregame ceremonies. Mike Mussina is throwing out the first pitch before signing a one-year contract. The game can be seen on YES locally and ESPN nationally. Smile, baseball’s back.

First Game Thread of the year! Finally!

  3. Mike P says:

Whatever you can say about rotation deapth, when they put out that lineup, that pitcher and with that bullpen, you’ve gotta feel good!

  4. Jimmy McNulty says:

Fuckin A. If they get another starter they’re taking the East.

  5. The Real JobaWockeeZ says:

  9. Dr. O says:

So is Kim Jones going to ask Derek Jeter about his “new swing” EVERY frickin’ game? I don’t believe Derek would hit a woman, but Minka Kelly seems like she would.

also should I be worried about these DirecTV/YES commercials?

  10. Tampa Yankee says:

Heard Olney this morning on Mike and Mike say that he is picking Nova for RoY. I’ll sign up for that!

Also, Mike and Mike along with Timmy K have CC winning the CY and Cano winning the MVP… but they still have the Sox winning it all… whatevs!

Bold predictions… Phillies miss the playoffs (that pitching can’t score runs) and the Sox will not win the ALE but will get the WC and will not get out of the 1st round of the playoffs.

Yanks vs. Braves in the WS… Yanks in 6!

Nothing like Opening Day in Da Bronx! This morning, my local radio station, WPDH continued their long standing tradition of playing the Abbott and Costello WHo’s On First routine to commemorate Opening Day. Still cracks me up every time I hear it

  18. Yank the Frank says:

Ugh, I have DirecTV. I left Cablevision when they wouldn’t carry YES. They better get to an agreement or its FIOS here I come.

  36. Mike Axisa says:

I see YES couldn’t be bothered to show Moose throwing out the first pitch.

  37. Greg says:

  38. Adam says:

Well on the bright side out here in Chicago the weather is actually baseball appropriate. Go Yanks!

  39. Total Dominication says:

Can’t believe I’m gonna miss the first 40 minutes in APEcon. I can sneak it in history, but I have a test in Econ.

    • Monteroisdinero says:

Montoursville is lovely this time of year. Brisk in them there woods.

I am at work. No TV. I expect a good, informative thread.

  44. Guest says:

Yes, I do indeed love it when you call me big poppa.

  45. Fair Weather Freddy says:

here we go! STRIKE ONE!! from CC

  46. Steve O. says:

I love how they said that the Yankees were the best defensive team because they had the least errors.

  47. A-Rod's Hip says:

Will this be the magical year that Texeira bats over .270 in April!?!?!?!? (even though it’s March, so his 2 HR’s today won’t count!)

  48. chris says:

  49. dkidd says:

    first of many

  50. Guest says:

    Trust PC Richards!

  51. Mike Axisa says:

Hey look, Jackson struck out. Who’d a thunk it.

    • Guest says:

Its almost as if a player who can’t solve the strikeout issue in the minors is unlikely to do so in the majors.

  52. A-Rod's Hip says:

    *PC Richard* welcome back!

  53. cano is the bro says:

    jackson striking out, love it

  54. Steve O. says:

Water is wet, grass is green, and Austin Jackson strikes out.

  55. So Jackson hasn’t changed his ways huh

  56. Adam says:

I really hope that the new Tigers’ starting second baseman comes to bat with Busta Rhymes playing….

  57. Alex S says:

    Hows that Oblique?

  58. Fair Weather Freddy says:

Guess Grandy is ok. Great catch!!

  59. A-Rod's Hip says:

  60. cano is the bro says:

  61. mbonzo says:

Granderson is keeping the no hitter going O_o

  62. Kay: “Jim Leyland says ‘Will Rhymes is about five feet tall but he does everything you want him to do.’”

One thing that I want him to do is be taller. Can he do that?

    • mbonzo says:

Will Rhymes is inspector gadget with a name that belongs in the black eyed peas. If you need anything more you’re simply asking too much.

    • Steve O. says:

Will Rhymes was actually 6’2″. He’s actually really old and his body has shrunk down to an even 5 feet when the Tigers wanted him to be smaller.

  63. Zack says:

$15 for gameday on my phone and all i get is “unable to connect”

  64. V says:

Woah, tsjc, long time no see (ish?)!

    2011 Baseball IZ HEAHH!!!

  65. Adam says:

Two batters into the new baseball season and I already had my first celebratory fist pump. Gotta love baseball.

  66. dkidd says:

    grand central station

  67. Guest says:

Unless Sterling is funnin’ me, sounds like Grandy snagged the first web gem of the year.

  68. tampaRob says:

  69. Here’s to another great Yankee season, RAB folk! Welcome back to those of you (cough TSJC) who hibernated for the winter :)

  70. Nick Swisher can’t even read his name and number without smirking and bouncing around like he’s hopped up on goofballs.

    I love it.

  71. steven says:

mr russel martin didnt look to happy to introduce himself =/

  72. A-Rod's Hip says:

    Verlander is NASTY!

  73. dkidd says:

    fire cashman

  74. mbonzo says:

Brett Gardner sees 6 pitches. Thats more than Jeter saw all of last year.

  75. Dr. O says:

Uggh thanks for bumming me out on opening day YES. So after doing a little research on these DirecTV/YES ads/scroll it appears that DirecTV customers are potentially going to be the hostages in a pissing contest due to nothing more really than bad timing for their agreement to be expiring. DirecTV, understandably wants to pay the same as the other NYC area providers but YES wants the DirecTV fees to increase so they can get more out of the others when THEIR deals are up next.

    • Pat D says:

      Thanks for the information.

I’m wondering if the network should be taken off it would also remove the games from the Extra Innings package. I mean, not seeing the network would suck, but if the games are still on, I’m not going to get extremely worked up about it.

Now if the games go away…I’ll flip.

      • Dr. O says:

The way it works is DirecTV customers outside the NYC market would still have access to the opposing team feeds thru MLB X-Innings or their RSN. However no one would have YES and the NYC market would be blacked out from any game that would otherwise be available on YES, even with the X-Innings package.

  76. Gardner doesn’t have the mindset to leadoff, clearly Jeter should be there.

  77. dkidd says:

    sick curveball

  78. dkidd says:

    gritty catch

  79. Dr. O says:

Is YES just determined to needle Jeter all year? If it isn’t the “new swing” its the constant references to being #2 in the lineup? I’m pretty sure the guy hit #2 before, and during a pretty good stretch of Yankee baseball.

  80. mbonzo says:

That Verlander guy is pretty good.

  81. Rey22 says:

Verlander looking nasty right off the gate.

  82. A-Rod's Hip says:

#13. The Legend. LET’S DO IT!

  83. JMK says:

Took work off to see this game. How’d CC look, gents (and ladies)?

  84. My nickname for A-Rod for 2011:

    Think about it.

  85. chris says:

wow john starting the season off with a bang. First says the stadium looks great for its 4th year, then corrects himself by saying no its 3…08,09 and 2010.

  86. cano is the bro says:

    Verlander’s stuff is so filthy

  87. Yank the Frank says:

That home plate ump needs to get a job.

  88. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

If A-Rod doesn’t drive in Teixeira, then he’s automatically the worst player in baseball history.

  89. insensitive nomaas guy says:

    WORD UP!

  90. A-Rod's Hip says:

    makin’ Verlander work at least..

  91. dkidd says:

pitching around alex to get to…cano

    this line-up is absurd

  92. ShuutoHeat says:

    Damn base cloggers.

  93. aRX says:

Time to make him pay Robbie

  94. cano is the bro says:

    OBP ftw

  95. Mister Delaware says:

Lotsa pitches thrown on a very cold day. Nice.

  96. Tampa Yankee says:

    Making him work.

    Let’s go ROBBIE!

  97. Rey22 says:

20+ pitches on the first inning. Yankee baseball right off the bat.

  98. JMK says:

We should play more like the Angels. They’d pull a double steal right now…

  99. A-Rod's Hip says:

i love the way our hitters never give away at-bats

  100. Whatever microphone is picking up the ball hitting the glove needs to stfu

  101. cano is the bro says:

    make him work Cano

  102. Marc says:

First inning of the first game, and we are already working the pitcher. This will be a great season!

  103. mike_h says:

work the count guys, get Verlander out early!!

  104. (checks pitch count)

Who’s on the mound today, Justin Verlander or Diasuke Matsuzaka?

    • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

If I was Greg, I would say:

How could Matsuzaka be pitching? He plays for the Red Sox, idiot. Shut up.

  105. Mister Delaware says:

  106. Cano is our Dominican Tiger. He’ll homer here and I’ll laugh.

Also, happy Opening Day, see you all in October.

  107. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    That was power.

  108. ShuutoHeat says:

Damn it, it’s alright…the boys got him up to 31 pitches.

  109. kmarx says:

    31 pitches is cool

  110. cano is the bro says:

no runs but 31 pitches…very productive inning. The sooner we get into that shaky tigers bullpen, the better

  111. Joe says:

hey, 31 pitches is still a useful offensive inning.

  112. dkidd says:

we just guaranteed a look at the tiger’s crappy middle relief

  113. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

I still think Cabrera should have been the MVP.

  114. JMK says:

    Camera man drinking early?

  115. Looks like that cameraman had some issues with alcohol as well.

  116. JMK says:

Can Cabrera outhit his BAC this year? I think so. He’s that good.

  117. John says:

    Hitting base hits drunk. Classic.

  118. Rey22 says:

What? Not a perfect game? Trade this garbage. We want Millwood!

  119. Ivan says:

Im back, Yankee’s baseball is back…oh YEAH!!!!

  120. Pat D says:

    Uh oh.

  121. Mister Delaware says:

  122. JMK says:

    Off with his head!

  123. Mike Axisa says:

Jesus Derek, that was hit right at you.

  124. cano is the bro says:

  125. A-Rod's Hip says:

hard hit balls off CC so far.. no bueno..

  126. Joe says:

    Nunez makes that play!!!!!!!!!!!

  127. Off a diving Jeter!

Serious Note: Cant wait to see him play there for 4 more years

  128. Pat D says:

Has Wally Matthews tweeted about that last play yet?

  129. dkidd says:

    come on, big man

  130. Mister Delaware says:

CC staying outside so the next one goes towards Cano.

  131. mike_h says:

damn bases packed, this aint good

  132. A-Rod's Hip says:

Derek still should’ve had that man

  133. thaaaaaaayankeeeswin says:

    cmon double play

  134. Jimmy McNulty says:

Get your shut together fat man.

  135. If Sabathia gets out of this with only one run allowed, that’s not too bad.

  136. Mister Delaware says:

  137. Yank the Frank says:

Bases loaded no one out and they only score one. No big deal.

  138. JerseyDutch says:

That wasn’t too bad all things considered…

  139. dkidd says:

    bases loaded, no outs

    only 1 run

    we got this

  140. thaaaaaaayankeeeswin says:

bases loaded no out…only one run in? take that

  141. Mike Axisa says:

Nice job, CC. One run is nothing.

  142. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    I miss Mitre :(

  143. Jimmy McNulty says:

Well that could have been worse.

  144. Tampa Yankee says:

Way to get out of it CC.

  145. All right, CC’s rough inning is already over. Time to lock it down.

  146. JMK says:

    Any SBGL sightings?

  147. where did all that working-the-count stuff go? Let’s get Verlander out, dudes.

  148. Justin. says:

Greetings from section 410. Send soup !!

  149. Kiersten says:

Tell me CGrand didn’t really just walk up to Friday.

  150. Monteroisdinero says:

2,000 comments on today’s game thread

  151. Justin. says:

Greetings from section 410. Send soup!

  152. Mike Axisa says:

Nice little at-bat for Grandy, regardless of outcome.

  153. Adam says:

T-minus 15 comments before someone starts freaking out about the offense…

  154. The 209 says:

general question: is there a way to get this thing to update automatically?

  155. J-Rod says:

    nice 3-2 count, 9 pitches i think.

  156. Pat D says:

So I love how ESPN replaced Rob Neyer, an admitted Yankee hater who would still praise the organization and players when it was due, on their SweetSpot blog with David Schoenfield, an admitted Yankee hater who never says anything good about the Yankees under any circumstances.

I mean, even Jim Caple will say something good about the Yankees every once in a while.

Case in point: these nuggets from him today.
“Off the glove of Jeter!” … get used to it, Yankee fans”

“As my friend Neumann just said in regard to the Yankees: Has a team with four DHs ever won the World Series”

    • Mr. Sparkle says:

…which is exactly why NOBODY goes to ESPN for any baseball news. Internet or TV. The internet has plenty of resources. TV now has MLB Network, which is admittedly VERY PRO-Red Sox, but not as much Yankee-hating.

  157. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

CC being all good n’ shit.

  158. dkidd says:

    lol jackson

  159. ShuutoHeat says:

    Soo…How’s Austin Jackson?

  160. bonestock94 says:

lol, gonna hear that a lot

  161. Adam says:

You know…looking at Will Rhymes, he actually looks like he would be really appropriate to shout out “Rorrr, rorrr, like a dungeon dragon…”

  162. Jim S says:

Hey! Austin Jackson struck out! Again!

  163. This guy Busta Rhymes has done everything they’ve asked of him.

  164. A-Rod's Hip says:

    Ken Singleton!!! LOLOLOL!!

he called him Busta Rhymes!!! LMFAO!!!

  165. Mister Delaware says:

I don’t blame you, Will. Hate the HP ump making that call.

  166. J-Rod says:

    YES AROD!!

  167. Dela G says:

man i love that i have this week off and i can watch opening day

  168. Dela G says:

if only kim jones was on ESPN (i’m at my parent’s home in texas for the week) i’d be a happy man

  169. J-Rod says:

    cmon martin

  170. J-Rod says:

  171. Who would’ve thought Russell Martin would have the Yankees’ first 2011 hit?

  172. Kiersten says:

And Russell Martin with the first Yankees hit of 2011.

    Well, Suzyn…

  173. Ivan says:

Congradulation to Martin on his 1st yankee hit.

  174. Pat D says:

    It begins.

  175. Mike Axisa says:

What a fucking waste. Stupid bunt.

  176. Kiersten says:

Well the first “grrrrrrr bunting” moment didn’t take long to arrive…

  177. JMK says:

    Fuck you Rhymes.

  178. Tampa Yankee says:

  179. Will Rhymes does everything you want, except for standing on the first base bag correctly.

  180. Jim S says:

Really hope that was Gardner’s doing and not Girardi.

  181. brazilian fan says:

why we dont trade igawa and nunez for verlander?

  182. donttradecano says:

whats rhymes complaining for? his poor fundamentals led to him getting stepped on

    • ShuutoHeat says:

He already bitch and moaned to the ump in his previous PA when he got K’ed. Maybe he is just naturally whiny.

  183. JDDZip says:

I have 0 problem with gardner bunting he had a legit chance to get a base hit there especially with miggy at first base

  184. Adam says:

It is nice to hear Sutcliffe actually point out that aging Derek Jeter still isn’t exactly Dale Sveum.

  185. 74 and Counting says:

    here we gooooooooo

  186. J-Rod says:

    omg!!! HE WALKED

  187. A-Rod's Hip says:

    come on Tex!!

  188. Greg says:

    Martin steals third

  189. ShuutoHeat says:

    whoa…stealing 3rd?

  190. Dela G says:

    a catcher that can steal???

  191. Holy Russell Martin Batman!

  192. Adam says:

    Well…that was…interesting.

  193. Mike Axisa says:

Check out Martin with the wheels.

  194. Martin with teh wheelz.

(It’s almost as if you don’t need to sac bunt for him, but I digress.)

  195. bonestock94 says:

    Russel Martin steals? Nice

  196. Ivan says:

Hey Russell don’t be doing shit like that again…

  197. ShuutoHeat says:

  198. bonestock94 says:

  199. J-Rod says:

  200. aRX says:

  201. Mister Delaware says:

    Teix Message!

  202. JMK says:

    Tex should have bunted.

  203. Greg says:

The first Text message of the year

  204. JerseyDutch says:

  205. Ivan says:

    Wow that was fuckin crush…

  206. Adam says:

Oh I love that baseball is back…

  207. Camilo Gerardo says:

    noice. let the onslaught begin!

  208. A-Rod's Hip says:

    Slow start WHO?????????

  209. Rey22 says:

    Hello 2011!

  210. Mr. Sparkle says:

That’s a good way to get over those usual early season struggles.

  211. Kiersten says:

Mark Teixeira approves of starting the season in March.

  212. cano is the bro says:

so much for the slow start for Tex…LETS GO

  213. aRX says:

I’d say this is a good sign of not struggling early, but…this is still March.

  214. JMK says:

    Robbie looked awful there.

  215. aRX says:

    Um, Robbie…

  216. thaaaaaaayankeeeswin says:

    chasin that

  217. dkidd says:

    the april curse is over!!!!

  218. cjc says:

oh Robbie how you love that pitch in your eyes (at least he can hit it from time to time)

  219. MannyGeee says:

watching via Game-Day… what did A-Rods fly out look like?

  220. The Real JobaWockeeZ says:

    TEIX! Thanks from my team!

  221. Marc says:

Wasn’t one of the grievances that Cano would strikeout on a pitch that was a foot above his head?

  222. bakekrukow412 says:

  223. Dela G says:

    great inning

although cano as usual, swings at a pitch at his eyes

  224. Mike Axisa says:

I know the answer to the poll just because I looked that up yesterday.

  225. Mickey "BadaBling King" Scheister says:

I wish it was April for Texs sake, now they’ll just say he still sucks in April.

  226. Greg says:

CC’s location is off a bit.

  227. Aj says:

Is it just me, or does Ken Singleton sound like Dr. Hibbert from the Simpsons? Or maybe it’s Jerry Manuel that sounds like him.

    • MannyGeee says:

if its Singleton that sounds like Dr Hibbert then thats pretty funny. If its Jerry Manuel…. then you, sir, are a racist.

  228. Victor Martinez looked like he’d swing at literally anything.

  229. Mister Delaware says:

“Why didn’t Russell knee the strike 3 pitch to Martinez over to our dugout?” – Jorge Posada

  230. aRX says:

Time for the double play ball.

  231. A-Rod's Hip says:

come on Carston. battle out of this one!

  232. Dela G says:

    phil coke is starting now??

  233. Dela G says:

    where did that miss??

  234. Mister Delaware says:

    Let’s make a strikeout, CC!

  235. Mike Axisa says:

Ack, you gotta get Brandon Inge out.

  236. A-Rod's Hip says:

just missed the location.. o well

    get the next guy CC!

  237. Greg says:

CC was bad with two outs and RISP. Batters hitting .313 against him

  238. Mister Delaware says:

Edinson quickly falls behind in the NL RoY race.

  242. swishers fauxhawk says:

    Lol, Avila.

  243. Greg says:

Neither pitcher seems comfortable out there. Must be the weather

  244. MannyGeee says:

    70 pitches through 3.2IP… EEK

Good thing we have that “LockDown Bullpen (C)” to get us through

  245. Dela G says:

  246. Mike Axisa says:

Apparently the subway race changed and it’s not the B, D, and 4 anymore. My world has been turned upside down.

    • Adam says:

The Yankees have decided to listen to the outpouring and cries of its fan base…it is now all Cotton Eye Joe, all the time.

  247. Tampa Yankee says:

I haven’t followed games on MLB Gameday in a while but I’m liking the new design.

  258. Bullwinkle says:

Did Kim just say “JAP”? OOPS.

  259. Pat D says:

Jeter looked real bad going after that ball.

  260. Ivan says:

I’ll be honest, I didn’t think Jeter was going to get to that ball at all.

  261. A-Rod's Hip says:

I’ll take a sac-fly from Cabrera any day in that situation. The key is to avoid those situations.

  262. Greg says:

It looks like it will come down to the bullpens

  263. Yes, Michael Kay, that “era” certainly did loom large.

  264. YES’s contract with DirecTV ends tomorrow and they’re still negotiating a new deal? Who’s negotiating for them, the NFL?

  265. Dela G says:

    aight yanks, runz plz

  272. Dr. O says:

I copied this from earlier in case it is relevant to any other DirecTV customers, but also wanted to add what I am not sure of is should there be no agreement and you have MLB Extra Innings you MAY still be able to access the yankee game feed via the mix channel. I know usually the blackout rules don’t apply with the specific channel since its not dependent on your location. You would not however be able to have the game full screen.

    Dr. O says:
    March 31, 2011 at 2:50 pm
The way it works is DirecTV customers outside the NYC market would still have access to the opposing team feeds thru MLB X-Innings or their RSN. However no one would have YES and the NYC market would be blacked out from any game that would otherwise be available on YES, even with the X-Innings package.

  273. Mister Delaware says:

Looks like this game will be decided by the bullpens.

  274. Urban says:

Didn’t a whole bunch of people originally sign up for Direct TV that horrible year there was no Yankee baseball on because Cablevision wouldn’t carry YES?

  275. Mike Axisa says:

I hear the bullpens are going to decide this one.

  276. Mike Axisa says:

Wow, what the frig was that?

  277. Urban says:

WTF. This is Inge, not Cabrera!

  278. BigBlueAL says:

CC giving up way too many 2-strike hits today.

  279. Mister Delaware says:

    Great jump by Curtis.

  280. swishers fauxhawk says:

  281. Gardner took an interesting route to cut off that double.

  282. Looks like My Man 100 Grand and The Camshaft are the only two defenders that want to help CC win today.

    Nice play, Curt Flirt.

  283. Chip says:

Well, I suppose I can live with 2ER (should be 1) over 6 innings. Hey, remember when CC was a notorious slow starter?

  284. Ooooh, FOX Business is back as a sponsor again this year.

I’m already amped for Freedom Week. I’m fully torqued.

  285. MannyGeee says:

Inge owns CC apparantly. we should sign that guy…

  325. A-Rod's Hip says:

what a freakin pitch by Verlander on 3-1.. wow

  326. Mike Axisa says:

That was a nasty change on 3-1.

  327. brazilian fan says:

verlander is a beast 97 mph in 112 pitches yikes

    • Urban says:

Reminds me of a Nolan Ryan story. He still holds the official record for a fastball, even though it was “only” 100.9 mph. The reason why is it was recorded under validated, scientific conditions, something no one has actually tried to do since.

The 101 mph pitch, however, was recorded ten feet from home plate, instead of out of the hand as pitches are today. More amazingly, it was approximately 150th pitch he threw in the game.

Ryan was the real Freak, not Lincecum.

  328. MannyGeee says:

OK here we go…. the year of the bullpen!

this is either gonna be awesome or sucky…

  329. dkidd says:

    last inning for verlander

    bring on the sky pointer!

  330. Adam says:

    Man…change-up, that was tough.

  331. Mike Axisa says:

Yikes, doubled up on the change. That’s not cool when the guy’s throwin 97.

  332. Urban says:

    Now pitching? Robertson? Joba? Ayala…ahhhhhhhh!

  333. bonestock94 says:

    Justin Verlander

  334. A-Rod's Hip says:

that’s some phenomenal pitching by Verlander. *tips cap*

  336. brazilian fan says:

fyi all the hits by detroit were on the left side of our infield. Cool

And that 3-1 change up wow. Perfect spot.

  337. Monteroisdinero says:

3-1 change and 3-2 change. 114 pitches in March. Verlander/not bad.

    /next pitcher please

  338. Yank the Frank says:

You would think with a new season they would have new commercials.

  339. JerseyDutch says:

Has anyone considered the possibility that this game might come down to bullpens?

  340. swishers fauxhawk says:

Let’s go Joba. Silence the haters.

  341. Hey Michael Kay: He didn’t strike him out on two straight changeups. There was a fastball mixed in between the two that Jorge fouled off. (Probably played a part in the equation.)

  342. Mike Axisa says:

    Thanks for trying, Austin.

  343. Adam says:

    Nasty hook from Joba.

  344. Wow, today’s marquee pitching matchup followed by Penny-Burnett?

  345. JobaWockeeZ says:

That curve was right down the middle.

  346. And then Verlander loses all those cool points by shoving a disgusting hunk of chaw into his piehole.

  347. aRX says:

  348. Mister Delaware says:

Man, Rhymes is not going to be well liked this year.

  349. BigBlueAL says:

First 3-2 count for Joba this season, what will he throw??

  350. Hey Leiland and Rhymes, did you miss that strike call to Swisher?

  351. swishers fauxhawk says:

    Yay, Joba.

  352. Mister Delaware says:

    We play 6 innings.

  353. JerseyDutch says:

    Nice, Joba.

  354. Adam says:

  366. Adam says:

Grandy! Now that’s the Phil Coke I remember…

  367. ShuutoHeat says:

    C GRAND!!!!

What is this about not hitting lefties?

  368. Urban says:

Ahh, yes. Classic Coke. Still likes giving up the longball to lefthanded hitters. Love it.

  369. aRX says:

Coke still loyal to the Yanks even a year later :)

  370. JerseyDutch says:

    More oblique strains for Grandy…

Too early to bunt. Eighth, maybe. Not seventh. Please don’t do it.

  381. Frank1979 says:

Wait a second, I thought Coke was supposed to be starting? Did I miss something? (Not that I’m complaining, I’ll take that home run.)

  382. BigBlueAL says:

Gardner will lead the league in Sac bunts this season. lol

  383. YanksFan in MA says:

    No problem with that bunt.

  384. aRX says:

    *sigh* Why bunt again?

  385. If Gardner leading off was meant to do this, please bat him 9th again

  386. Mike Axisa says:

The bunts … they’re killing me.

    • Chris says:

There’s nothing wrong with Gardner bunting.

      • Chip says:

There’s nothing wrong with a guy who is one of the best in the league at getting on base giving up an out? A guy who is nearly impossible to double up?

        • Tampa Yankee says:

        • Chris says:

He shouldn’t be giving up an out. He should be bunting.

The problem with the sac bunt (and particularly in Gardner’s case) is not the bunt itself. It’s only a problem when the hitter isn’t even trying to get on base.

          • Nobody else in this little mini-conversation (Mike, Chip, Tampa Yankee, Mister Delaware, et. al.) was talking about bunting for a hit; they were all talking about sac bunting. Please don’t equivocate and change the argument.

            • Chris says:

Please don’t equivocate and change the argument.

              Why not?

He should ALWAYS try to get a hit when he bunts – and it should be the same with every batter (except perhaps a pitcher that you don’t want running). The problem isn’t the call for a bunt, the problem is laying down an easy bunt right back to a pitcher. That’s an execution issue and not a strategy issue.

              • This is still equivocation.

All players who sacrifice bunt try to get a hit while doing so. All of them also fail to do so (despite how fast or slow they might be, mind you) at extremely high rates, which is why it’s called a sacrifice.

He’s SEVERELY decreasing his chances of getting a hit for a marginal upgrade in his chances of putting the ball in play in a manner that allows the runner on first to reach second base safely. This is because the defense anticipates the play, and it’s an extremely easy play to defend when properly anticipated.

The problem is the call for the bunt, because we all know that it’s a high-risk, low-reward play. The only non-sac bunts are the ones where you attempt to surprise the defense in a non-sac-bunt situation.

      • Mister Delaware says:

Based on last year’s matrix, expected runs went from 0.86 to 0.68. So that’s wrong.

        • Chris says:

You’re assuming that the only outcome from bunting is an out and the runner advancing. Not sure where you got the numbers for just last year, but based on 1993-2010 (from here: you get the following…

          Runner on 1B, 0 outs: 0.941
          Runner on 2B, 1 out: .721
          Runner on 1B+2B, 0 outs: 1.556

          Gardner gets a hit about 30% of the time he bunts. So the run expectancy is: (0.3 * 1.556) + (0.7 * .721) = 0.9715

This is slight increase in run expectancy, thus it’s not necessarily a bad move.

          • Gardner gets a hit about 30% of the time he bunts.

Where’d you get that data from? Is that all bunts, only sac bunts, or only non-sac bunts?

            • Chris says:

              That’s all bunts (from fangraphs).

              • Chris says:

But I don’t think it accounts for throwing errors on bunts, but I’d guess that won’t really change the numbers much.

My point is just that every time someone bunts people complain, but they shouldn’t automatically complain about bunting – it’s the execution of the bunt (i.e. not trying to get on base) that’s the problem, not simply the bunt itself.

It’s a fine distinction, but it’s one of my pet peeves.

          • Chip says:

But those include times where he wasn’t obviously bunting. I’m all for him dropping one down now and then when the defense isn’t exactly expecting it but not when the corners are rushing in on him. He should smack it right by the third baseman for a double.

  387. I like the runner at 2nd with only one out. Jeter can’t ground into a DP so there’s at least a guy in SP for Tex.

  388. What’s up with the homeless-looking Tiger relievers?

  389. Urban says:

  396. BigBlueAL says:

Yankees just scored a run with small ball!! lol

  399. JobaWockeeZ says:

Gardner should stop bunting. Leave that to Jeter.

  400. Thomas says:

Question: I am not watching the game (at work), but did Phil Coke point to the sky on Granderson’s homer?

I’d be really disappointed, if he didn’t.

  401. Good-looking breaking ball from Soriano.

  402. dkidd says:

i know we spent a bunch of $ of soriano, but i feel pretty good about our chances right now

    • MannyGeee says:

question, would you still feel really good about it if Phil Coke didn’t come in about 20 minutes ago and do his best Kenny Powers impression and this was still a 3-3 game?

      • dkidd says:

soriano pushes everyone back a slot, meaning no boone logan in the seventh inning of a tie game

tough to give up the draft pick, but in the short term i love our bullpen

  403. Mike Axisa says:

That makes up for the call on Swish.

  404. “He got the Swisher treatment.”

    Love it.

  405. Jimmy McNulty says:

Fact: Rafael Soriano is the first Yankee to get Miguel Cabrera out this year.

This game actually does seem to be coming down to the bullpens. You guys are good.

  408. Will Y says:

Whats up with all the empty seats behind home plate??

  409. BigBlueAL says:

Its so much easier watching the Yankees hold on to a lead late in the game than it is the Knicks.

  467. JobaTheHeat62 says:

I know its one game but there was alot to like…Man I hope Grandy plays like this all season..I know he did this opening game last year, but very encouraging. I also liked what I saw from Russel Martin too..Didn’t do much, but as a 9 hitter that is money.

  468. BigBlueAL says:

    Mo is God.

  469. Guest says:

    Curtis Granderson hits eighth…against righties.

Barring sig injuries, this team will hit. A lot.

  470. DaveW says:

This will be a fun year.

    Offense – best in majors.
IF Defense – at least average.
    OF Defense – outstanding.
    Depth – good.
    Bullpen – best in majors.
    Starters – plenty adequate.
System – loaded. Gobs of trade bait if needed.

  471. mike_h says:

    undefeated bitches!!!

  472. rbizzler says:

Erick Almonte just got an AB for the Brewers.

    Yes, that Erick Almonte.

  473. theyankeewarrior says:

Still leading the league in K’s. Still leading the league in BABIP.

  474. Jimmy McNulty says:

Granderson’s defense, Granderson hitting a HR off of a lefty, Mark Teixeira hitting a HR before May, Alex Rodriguez looked good, bullpen was rock solid, and CC had a pretty good off day. Martin had some good ABs, stole a base, and looked good behind the plate. Scored five runs when Verlander started, and obviously the win was the best part.

Jeter looked like shit at the plate and in the field, CC was still off, the INF looked awful across the board, and I’m concerned about Gardner going back to sucking.

    • Sean C says:

Good thing we still have 161 games to figure things out.

      • Jimmy McNulty says:

My only long term concerns (resulting from this game) are Jeter, the infield defense, and Gardner’s bat. I’m worried about the 4th and 5th starter too, but I’ll wait for Nova or Garcia to have a shitty start before I bitch about that. Good win, fun game, great way to start the season!

        • Yanks46 says:

jeter walked, scored a run, and had a hard hit sac fly RBI. Not his best effort but I wouldnt say he looked like shit at the plate. Its one game. Geeze

          • Jimmy McNulty says:

I’m concerned about him long term, though. He’s kinda my Burnett of the line up, he’s going to be here for another three years and he’s a big part of the team coming off of a crapy year. He didn’t do much to quell my concerns although looking bad against Justin Verlander isn’t a bad thing.

            • Yanks46 says:

Its ok to have legit concerns about him going forward, but I just think saying he looked like shit today was a little overboard.

    • I think you’re overstating the case against CC. He only walked two and struck out seven.

      • JobaTheHeat62 says:

I agree…CC was fine..He isnt exactly the best early season..he was more than adequate.

      • Jimmy McNulty says:

Just a little off, he’ll straighten it out. Cano also had a rough day at the plate, but I’m sure he’ll fix that. Positives and negatives to every game (except no hitters)

  475. mbonzo says:

  476. Preston says:

So what happened to Phil Coke starting? He’s still listed as their fifth starter. Apparently they are going to start the year with a four man rotation because of the off day. Tough to get an L before you even get your first start.

  477. king of fruitless hypotheticals says:

    Joba’s K/BB rate: INF

  478. Jon says:

Good win for the Yankees today and the back of the bullpen looked good with Joba, Soriano, and obviously Rivera. Weird to see Texiera actually get some RBIs in April. I was fully expecting to wait three weeks for him to get a hit.
