Game One: Opening Day
ByIt’s been five long, generally boring months without meaningful Yankees’ baseball, but that all comes to an end today. Game one of 162 (and hopefully more) will be played in the Bronx today, even if Mother Nature isn’t fully cooperating. It’s overcast and chilly and it’s been drizzling all morning, but the weather is only going to get worse tonight and tomorrow. They’re likely to play at least part of the game through some rain or mist, but that’s life. Yankees’ baseball is back, and as cliche as it sounds, the quest for #28 starts now. Here are you lineups…
Tigers
Austin Jackson, CF
Will Rhymes, 2B
Magglio Ordonez, RF
Miguel Cabrera, 1B
Victor Martinez, DH
Ryan Raburn, LF
Jhonny Peralta, SS
Brandon Inge, 3B
Alex Avila, C
Justin Verlander, SP
Yankees
Brett Gardner, LF
Derek Jeter, SS
Mark Teixeira, 1B
Alex Rodriguez, 3B
Robbie Cano, 2B
Nick Swisher, RF
Jorge Posada, DH
Curtis Granderson, CF
Russell Martin, C
CC Sabathia, SP
First pitch is scheduled for 1:05pm ET, thought there will be some pregame ceremonies. Mike Mussina is throwing out the first pitch before signing a one-year contract. The game can be seen on YES locally and ESPN nationally. Smile, baseball’s back.

I’m so excited!
Wheeeeee

LET’S GO YANKEES! # 28 HERE WE COME!
First Game Thread of the year! Finally!
Whatever you can say about rotation deapth, when they put out that lineup, that pitcher and with that bullpen, you’ve gotta feel good!
Fuckin A. If they get another starter they’re taking the East.
Teix and Posada need to rake for my team!
Would Mike Mussina pass the better than
MitreGarcia/Colon test right now?Negativity after the first loss. It’s opening day, stop being a bitch.
It wasn’t really serious. Calm down.
Point stands, on opening day you wait until the first loss to bitch.
Is this game really blacked out on MLB.tv?
it’s not blacked out for me…but i live in MD
If you live in tri-state area I think it’s always blacked out on MLB.tv.
Every Yankee game is blacked out in MLB.tv if I live in the tri-state area?
If its on YES then yes.
Not true, I live in central jersey and get almost every game, except for when they are on a different network or play Philly.
ahh i’ve missed these game threads. I’m so excited/ happy!!
So is Kim Jones going to ask Derek Jeter about his “new swing” EVERY frickin’ game? I don’t believe Derek would hit a woman, but Minka Kelly seems like she would.
also should I be worried about these DirecTV/YES commercials?
Heard Olney this morning on Mike and Mike say that he is picking Nova for RoY. I’ll sign up for that!
Also, Mike and Mike along with Timmy K have CC winning the CY and Cano winning the MVP… but they still have the Sox winning it all… whatevs!
Bold predictions… Phillies miss the playoffs (that pitching can’t score runs) and the Sox will not win the ALE but will get the WC and will not get out of the 1st round of the playoffs.
Yanks vs. Braves in the WS… Yanks in 6!
We so excited.

Our collective depression is over!
Phil Coke needs a haircut.
Nothing like Opening Day in Da Bronx! This morning, my local radio station, WPDH continued their long standing tradition of playing the Abbott and Costello WHo’s On First routine to commemorate Opening Day. Still cracks me up every time I hear it
Play. Fucking. Ball.
FINALLY HERE!!!!!!!!!!

HOW THE F#$% YOU BOYS DOIN’?!?!
IT’S A GHOST.
http://image.lyricspond.com/im.....-cover.jpg
My rap is like ziti.
Welcome back man!
Where have you been? Hibernation?
I was busy all winter long building my mansion. I haven’t been able to really concentrate on anything else.
My bad.
St. Tommiesburg?
Big house, long hallways
Got ten bathrooms, I can shit all day
Tommie, this place ain’t been the same without you. Welcome back.
Your alive!
http://burnsluciano.blogspot.c.....d-yet.html
NOW it feels like opening day! Welcome back, TSJCakaRUTE!
TSJC has returned, he has a ponytail lol whatevs.
Yankee Stadium music guy: It’s been like 15 years of the same stuff. Feel free to mix it up, and besides The Empire is way cooler than the Rebel Alliance. Embrace the dark side.
“All I do is Win” mixed to a Steinbrenner tribute is the obvious choice.
Ugh, I have DirecTV. I left Cablevision when they wouldn’t carry YES. They better get to an agreement or its FIOS here I come.
They probably will. I know if it affects my MLB package, my next words will be: refund.
AHHHHHHHH!
Shit, this was a reply to TSJC. Whatever, the point stands.
(swipes BigDavey88′s candy bar, eats half of it, throws rest in trash, gives him a noogie)
Demaso Marte.
OH SHIT, BASEBALL IS BACK
the Red Sox can tounge kiss my sh!t hole
Last minute fantasy question: Morrow’s on the DL so Burnett or Slowey?
Granderson is a #8 hitter. A-Jax is a leadoff hitter. Proof that A-jax is better.
/Heyman’d
If CC strikes Jackson out fewer than four times today I say let him walk.
little pitchy, dog
lol, nice
Ooh I hope that sounds better in person…benefit of the doubt here…
i’m sorry but the woman singing the national anthem kind of sucks…
Haley Swindal, game on!
PLAY BALL!!
LET’S GO YANKEES!!
Greetings again to all the posters on RAB!! i missed you all
TIME TO PLAY BALL!
(girds loins)
Pass out the bayonets!
Andy, where did you get a hand grenade?
I have my sources…
Go yankessssss
Anyone know if I can pick up the game on the radio online anywhere?
http://www.mlb.com
Its about 19 dollars for the full season.
verlander: most underrated pitcher in mlb?
He never won 20! WTF!?!?!?
/actual announcer
LOL
i think he is very much overlooked
No way. I’d give it to Liriano before I’d give it to Verlander. Or even his teammate, Max Scherzer.
among pitchers who have performed at a high level for 5 straight seasons?
Well, you didn’t say that.
I don’t think Scherzer’s done enough to be rated one way or another.
I miss you Kay
I’m so happy I could plotz.
Hasenpfeffer Incorporated, yo.
I see YES couldn’t be bothered to show Moose throwing out the first pitch.
I miss Moose
What’s the best place to track a game at work?
Well on the bright side out here in Chicago the weather is actually baseball appropriate. Go Yanks!
Can’t believe I’m gonna miss the first 40 minutes in APEcon. I can sneak it in history, but I have a test in Econ.
Good luck on the test!
William, while you’re taking a test, Im reclining on the sofa watching the game while missing school.
Mussina the woodsman, apparently. He looks like Dan Abrams’s mountain guide.
Montoursville is lovely this time of year. Brisk in them there woods.
I am at work. No TV. I expect a good, informative thread.
MOOSE
FIRST PITCH COMING UP WE SO EXCITED!!!!
FUN FUN FUN FUN
LOOKIN’ FORWARD TO THE WEEKEND
i had actually gone twenty minutes without thinking of that song
WHICH SEAT CAN I TAKE?!?!?!
And away we go.
Yes, I do indeed love it when you call me big poppa.
here we go! STRIKE ONE!! from CC
I love how they said that the Yankees were the best defensive team because they had the least errors.
I have no errors, I must be the best fielder ever!
It’s how Palmeiro won the Gold Glove that year.
Will this be the magical year that Texeira bats over .270 in April!?!?!?!? (even though it’s March, so his 2 HR’s today won’t count!)
1 DOWN, 1 TO GO!
WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BASEBALL IS BACK
One down, 4,670 to go.
first of many
Trust PC Richards!
Hey look, Jackson struck out. Who’d a thunk it.
Its almost as if a player who can’t solve the strikeout issue in the minors is unlikely to do so in the majors.
*PC Richard* welcome back!
jackson striking out, love it
Water is wet, grass is green, and Austin Jackson strikes out.
Water is loaded with iodine-131, grass is green, and Austin Jackson strikes out.
Fixed.
So Jackson hasn’t changed his ways huh
I really hope that the new Tigers’ starting second baseman comes to bat with Busta Rhymes playing….
Hows that Oblique?
Guess Grandy is ok. Great catch!!
GRANDYMAN!!!
Curtis!!!
GRANDY!
Granderson is keeping the no hitter going O_o
Kay: “Jim Leyland says ‘Will Rhymes is about five feet tall but he does everything you want him to do.’”
One thing that I want him to do is be taller. Can he do that?
Will Rhymes is inspector gadget with a name that belongs in the black eyed peas. If you need anything more you’re simply asking too much.
Will Rhymes was actually 6’2″. He’s actually really old and his body has shrunk down to an even 5 feet when the Tigers wanted him to be smaller.
$15 for gameday on my phone and all i get is “unable to connect”
Beautiful.
+1. >:-((
Woah, tsjc, long time no see (ish?)!
2011 Baseball IZ HEAHH!!!
It’s officially official.
Andy wields his bayonet:
http://cushen.wordpress.com/?page_id=138
Safe for work. Not THAT bayonet, you dirty-minded people!
Two batters into the new baseball season and I already had my first celebratory fist pump. Gotta love baseball.
grand central station
Unless Sterling is funnin’ me, sounds like Grandy snagged the first web gem of the year.
It was an OK catch…nothing thatll make the year end highlight reels but not bad.
Wooohoo!!!
Here’s to another great Yankee season, RAB folk! Welcome back to those of you (cough TSJC) who hibernated for the winter
I was busy throwing in winter ball. I’ve added a few MPH, I’m already in midseason form.
Did you get to enjoy the buffet line with Bartolo?
Miracle Max: I’ll call the brute squad!
Bartolo Colon: I’m on the brute squad.
Miracle Max: You *are* the brute squad!
See, this is why you are so missed around these parts.
Good to have you back, buddy.
Nick Swisher can’t even read his name and number without smirking and bouncing around like he’s hopped up on goofballs.
I love it.
“…high as a kite everybody….goofballs.”
mr russel martin didnt look to happy to introduce himself =/
Verlander is NASTY!
fire cashman
Well, that didn’t take long
Brett Gardner sees 6 pitches. Thats more than Jeter saw all of last year.
Uggh thanks for bumming me out on opening day YES. So after doing a little research on these DirecTV/YES ads/scroll it appears that DirecTV customers are potentially going to be the hostages in a pissing contest due to nothing more really than bad timing for their agreement to be expiring. DirecTV, understandably wants to pay the same as the other NYC area providers but YES wants the DirecTV fees to increase so they can get more out of the others when THEIR deals are up next.
Thanks for the information.
I’m wondering if the network should be taken off it would also remove the games from the Extra Innings package. I mean, not seeing the network would suck, but if the games are still on, I’m not going to get extremely worked up about it.
Now if the games go away…I’ll flip.
The way it works is DirecTV customers outside the NYC market would still have access to the opposing team feeds thru MLB X-Innings or their RSN. However no one would have YES and the NYC market would be blacked out from any game that would otherwise be available on YES, even with the X-Innings package.
Gardner doesn’t have the mindset to leadoff, clearly Jeter should be there.
sick curveball
gritty catch
Is YES just determined to needle Jeter all year? If it isn’t the “new swing” its the constant references to being #2 in the lineup? I’m pretty sure the guy hit #2 before, and during a pretty good stretch of Yankee baseball.
That Verlander guy is pretty good.
verlander who?
Verlander looking nasty right off the gate.
#13. The Legend. LET’S DO IT!
Took work off to see this game. How’d CC look, gents (and ladies)?
Not very CC like. Didn’t like the command and balls were hit on the nose. Only the first inning though.
Looked good and efficient if you ignore pitches 3-5.
Thanks, guys.
My nickname for A-Rod for 2011:
“Camshaft”.
Think about it.
They say this cat Camshaft is a bad mother…
shut your mouth!!!!!!!!!
wow john starting the season off with a bang. First says the stadium looks great for its 4th year, then corrects himself by saying no its 3…08,09 and 2010.
The best in the business…
But Jawn…
Verlander’s stuff is so filthy
That home plate ump needs to get a job.
If A-Rod doesn’t drive in Teixeira, then he’s automatically the worst player in baseball history.
He isn’t already?
No, the entire Angels organization is the worst player in baseball history.
I sit corrected.

Kick that ill lyrical science, nameless non-threatening generic black guy.
Fat Usher = marketing genius
It doubled her already impressive street cred.
(Remember, impressive doesn’t necessarily mean large.)
makin’ Verlander work at least..
pitching around alex to get to…cano
this line-up is absurd
Damn base cloggers.
Time to make him pay Robbie
OBP ftw
Lotsa pitches thrown on a very cold day. Nice.
Making him work.
Let’s go ROBBIE!
20+ pitches on the first inning. Yankee baseball right off the bat.
We should play more like the Angels. They’d pull a double steal right now…
Double steal squeeze bunt from second.
Trade for Vernon Wells?
Be a small-market team in the second largest media market in the country?
Works for the Mets, right?
I’m picking up what you’re putting down.
i love the way our hitters never give away at-bats
even though Cano does it in such a lazy way.. but still
Whatever microphone is picking up the ball hitting the glove needs to stfu
make him work Cano
First inning of the first game, and we are already working the pitcher. This will be a great season!
work the count guys, get Verlander out early!!
(checks pitch count)
Who’s on the mound today, Justin Verlander or Diasuke Matsuzaka?
http://www.instantrimshot.com
LOL
If I was Greg, I would say:
How could Matsuzaka be pitching? He plays for the Red Sox, idiot. Shut up.
HE MISSES MELKY!!!
Cano is our Dominican Tiger. He’ll homer here and I’ll laugh.
Also, happy Opening Day, see you all in October.
meh.
That was power.
Damn it, it’s alright…the boys got him up to 31 pitches.
31 pitches is cool
no runs but 31 pitches…very productive inning. The sooner we get into that shaky tigers bullpen, the better
These are the things that don’t show up on the scoreboard! BOOM!
/John Madden’d
You know who really knew how to shorten up on the bat and work the count? Brett Favre.
icwudt
hey, 31 pitches is still a useful offensive inning.
we just guaranteed a look at the tiger’s crappy middle relief
“crappy” might be an understatement
Perhaps “Diamondback-esque?”
I still think Cabrera should have been the MVP.
im with you there
Camera man drinking early?
Looks like that cameraman had some issues with alcohol as well.
Can Cabrera outhit his BAC this year? I think so. He’s that good.
I still can’t believe he took a swig from the bottle while pulled over.
Don’t you know who he is?
Hitting base hits drunk. Classic.
What? Not a perfect game? Trade this garbage. We want Millwood!
Im back, Yankee’s baseball is back…oh YEAH!!!!
Uh oh.
Sigh.
Off with his head!
Jesus Derek, that was hit right at you.
Maybe he’s working on a new fielding stance as well.
Which I can only assume now is to only stand.
dammit…
hard hit balls off CC so far.. no bueno..
Nunez makes that play!!!!!!!!!!!
Off a diving Jeter!
Serious Note: Cant wait to see him play there for 4 more years
Hopefully he’s still at SS when Iglesias comes up for Boston. That won’t be annoying.
You’re absolutely right: It won’t be annoying to watch the Red Sox throw 660 PA down the drain for 3-4 years straight with the new Rey Sanchez.
More my attempts to say sane up here listening to the narrative that his glove more than makes up for .230/.290/.315.
Has Wally Matthews tweeted about that last play yet?
Does Wally Matthews’s brain work that fast?
I doubt it.
Good point.
Btw, nice to see you again. But now those No Maas idiots will find new ways to mock you. I’m sure that tears you up inside.
What the fuck is NoMaas?
Something Roberto Duran once said, I believe.
I must have missed some sort of NoMaas controversy? Is this some pseudo internet fan site gang fight?
Not really, just a bunch of “commenters” over there like to mock Ben, Joe, Mike, tsjc and bexarama.
Just because they got banned here.
Sounds like dumb, petty shit. Whatevs.
It is.
FACT: Reading the comments section there can actually give you venereal disease. Through the internets.
Ahhhhh!!!!
I feel so unclean.
come on, big man
CC staying outside so the next one goes towards Cano.
Worked well against Inge.
damn bases packed, this aint good
arg
Derek still should’ve had that man
cmon double play
Get your shut together fat man.
Bartolo’s not even in the game yet!
Meh. It is what it is.
(moves on)
If Sabathia gets out of this with only one run allowed, that’s not too bad.
G’night.
Bases loaded no one out and they only score one. No big deal.
That wasn’t too bad all things considered…
bases loaded, no outs
only 1 run
we got this
/haiku’d
bases loaded no out…only one run in? take that
Nice job, CC. One run is nothing.
I miss Mitre
Well that could have been worse.
That swing was uglier than Nene Leakes.
Way to get out of it CC.
All right, CC’s rough inning is already over. Time to lock it down.
Any SBGL sightings?
Just one:
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_NPaCuwJ_TTk/S3CPsJHcIlI/AAAAAAAAAGk/nUNGofvSY4c/s512/sign07232005B.jpg
Ha, well done.
where did all that working-the-count stuff go? Let’s get Verlander out, dudes.
getting ahead in the count early helps him
Greetings from section 410. Send soup !!
Tell me CGrand didn’t really just walk up to Friday.
2,000 comments on today’s game thread

Greetings from section 410. Send soup!
Nice little at-bat for Grandy, regardless of outcome.
T-minus 15 comments before someone starts freaking out about the offense…
OMG we haven’t scored yet whats wrongggg???
general question: is there a way to get this thing to update automatically?
nice 3-2 count, 9 pitches i think.
So I love how ESPN replaced Rob Neyer, an admitted Yankee hater who would still praise the organization and players when it was due, on their SweetSpot blog with David Schoenfield, an admitted Yankee hater who never says anything good about the Yankees under any circumstances.
I mean, even Jim Caple will say something good about the Yankees every once in a while.
Case in point: these nuggets from him today.
“Off the glove of Jeter!” … get used to it, Yankee fans”
“As my friend Neumann just said in regard to the Yankees: Has a team with four DHs ever won the World Series”
…which is exactly why NOBODY goes to ESPN for any baseball news. Internet or TV. The internet has plenty of resources. TV now has MLB Network, which is admittedly VERY PRO-Red Sox, but not as much Yankee-hating.
I’d rather listen to the guys on Baseball Tonight on ESPN than the guys on MLBN.
at least the douches at NESN will give credit where its due… ESPN is an abortion.
CC being all good n’ shit.
lol jackson
Soo…How’s Austin Jackson?
Based on 2 PAs?
lol, gonna hear that a lot
You know…looking at Will Rhymes, he actually looks like he would be really appropriate to shout out “Rorrr, rorrr, like a dungeon dragon…”
Hey! Austin Jackson struck out! Again!
BABIP = #DIV/0!
This guy Busta Rhymes has done everything they’ve asked of him.
Ken Singleton!!! LOLOLOL!!
he called him Busta Rhymes!!! LMFAO!!!
I don’t blame you, Will. Hate the HP ump making that call.
YES AROD!!
man i love that i have this week off and i can watch opening day
if only kim jones was on ESPN (i’m at my parent’s home in texas for the week) i’d be a happy man
Don’t understand the KJ love. Not particularly charismatic, good looking or strong a reporter.
and she seems to have a lisp. I’ll take Heidi Watney.
cmon martin
Wooo Russell.
Auspicious.
YES!!!
Who would’ve thought Russell Martin would have the Yankees’ first 2011 hit?
And Russell Martin with the first Yankees hit of 2011.
Well, Suzyn…
Congradulation to Martin on his 1st yankee hit.
close
It begins.
damn that bunt
What a fucking waste. Stupid bunt.
Well the first “grrrrrrr bunting” moment didn’t take long to arrive…
This must have been one of the airing of grievances, right?
Fuck you Rhymes.
And Gardner too. Really, a bunt? I don’t understand why he would do that.
He was explaining to Girardi how he didnt want Jeter to GIDP
Ha.
Jackson only needs 167 more K’s
WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Will Rhymes does everything you want, except for standing on the first base bag correctly.
Really hope that was Gardner’s doing and not Girardi.
why we dont trade igawa and nunez for verlander?
idk
whats rhymes complaining for? his poor fundamentals led to him getting stepped on
He already bitch and moaned to the ump in his previous PA when he got K’ed. Maybe he is just naturally whiny.
I have 0 problem with gardner bunting he had a legit chance to get a base hit there especially with miggy at first base
That’s nice.
It is nice to hear Sutcliffe actually point out that aging Derek Jeter still isn’t exactly Dale Sveum.
i hate sutcliffe
here we gooooooooo
omg!!! HE WALKED
come on Tex!!
Martin steals third
whoa…stealing 3rd?
a catcher that can steal???
Holy Russell Martin Batman!
Well…that was…interesting.
Check out Martin with the wheels.
Martin with teh wheelz.
(It’s almost as if you don’t need to sac bunt for him, but I digress.)
the sac bunt was to limit Jeter’s temptation to GIDP whenever possible…
Russel Martin steals? Nice
Hey Russell don’t be doing shit like that again…
BOOM!!!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo
WOOOO!!!!
Booyah!
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM
HELL YEAH!
Teix Message!
Tex should have bunted.
It shows he lacks that gritty mentality. Home runs are for base clogging rally killers.
The first Text message of the year
Yowza!
Booomshakalaka.
Wow that was fuckin crush…
Oh I love that baseball is back…
noice. let the onslaught begin!
Slow start WHO?????????
Hello 2011!
That’s a good way to get over those usual early season struggles.
Mark Teixeira approves of starting the season in March.
WOOOOOOOOO!
technically Teix’s Aprils suck… he can hit 4 HRs today and drag through the next month.
i officially declare tomorrow March 32nd!
Well they don’t play tomorrow. Can we just make Saturday March 33rd?
let’s just go with March for the next 30 days.
so much for the slow start for Tex…LETS GO
I’d say this is a good sign of not struggling early, but…this is still March.
/mostlykidding
Robbie looked awful there.
Um, Robbie…
Usually the pitchers are still ahead of the hitters
chasin that
the april curse is over!!!!
wait…
oh Robbie how you love that pitch in your eyes (at least he can hit it from time to time)
watching via Game-Day… what did A-Rods fly out look like?
Was out in front and got it off the end of the bat.
Liner to center. Not especially deep but hit hard.
It was zipped.
It was the fair ball equivalent of fouling one directly back.
TEIX! Thanks from my team!
Wasn’t one of the grievances that Cano would strikeout on a pitch that was a foot above his head?
IT”S AN A_BOMB, FROM TEIXEIRA!!
great inning
although cano as usual, swings at a pitch at his eyes
I know the answer to the poll just because I looked that up yesterday.
So you’re saying that you’ve invented a time machine…out of a Delorean?
I wish it was April for Texs sake, now they’ll just say he still sucks in April.
CC’s location is off a bit.
Is it just me, or does Ken Singleton sound like Dr. Hibbert from the Simpsons? Or maybe it’s Jerry Manuel that sounds like him.
if its Singleton that sounds like Dr Hibbert then thats pretty funny. If its Jerry Manuel…. then you, sir, are a racist.
Victor Martinez looked like he’d swing at literally anything.
“Why didn’t Russell knee the strike 3 pitch to Martinez over to our dugout?” – Jorge Posada
Time for the double play ball.
come on Carston. battle out of this one!
phil coke is starting now??
wow
Yeah that was a shock to me…
“Yknow, he did it in the minors, but to me, Coke is just too valuable in that bullpen.”
*sigh*
Yes, Coke is starting, but Joba’s stuff plays better out of the bullpen….
so there’s that
I agree. I absolutely did not get that decision
where did that miss??
For real.
Let’s make a strikeout, CC!
damn it
Ack, you gotta get Brandon Inge out.
just missed the location.. o well
get the next guy CC!
At least he gets to face Avila.
CC was bad with two outs and RISP. Batters hitting .313 against him
Edinson quickly falls behind in the NL RoY race.
40.50 ERA.
good thing the pitcher was up next (Avila)
ZZ is an Ace. I love him
lulz.
Wow, big fella’s off-speed stuff looks good so far.
Lol, Avila.
Neither pitcher seems comfortable out there. Must be the weather
70 pitches through 3.2IP… EEK
Good thing we have that “LockDown Bullpen (C)” to get us through
anyone else excited about seeing mad max this weekend strike out 14 yanks or give up 6 runs (he seems so feast or famine)
Apparently the subway race changed and it’s not the B, D, and 4 anymore. My world has been turned upside down.
The Yankees have decided to listen to the outpouring and cries of its fan base…it is now all Cotton Eye Joe, all the time.
I haven’t followed games on MLB Gameday in a while but I’m liking the new design.
Expect for the fact that it just had Granderson hitting right handed
(face palm)
Well… its the only way he’ll ever hit lefty’s
Posada to DH experiment = epic fail after 2 ABs.
BABIP 1.000
unusually high K’s = unusually high BABIP
It’s f’n cold in NY in March John, get the f over it!
How do you allow a hit to that asshole.
Bunta Rhymes?
I liked this one.
good god… womp womp
Ack, Robbie.
Austin proclaims “I will not be denied”!! ugh, this time.
Oh no
seriously cano?
Robbie, don’t fight the ball away. Ball is good.
wheels are coming off the CC band wagon…
Robbie owes us a jack.
Did Kim just say “JAP”? OOPS.
Jeter looked real bad going after that ball.
I’ll be honest, I didn’t think Jeter was going to get to that ball at all.
Held my breath. I could just see it hitting off his glove and trickling into no-man’s land with Tigers circling the bases.
I’ll take a sac-fly from Cabrera any day in that situation. The key is to avoid those situations.
It looks like it will come down to the bullpens
TWSS
Feeling good about that scenario.
SORIANOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Yes, Michael Kay, that “era” certainly did loom large.
#announcersshouldhaveexcellentpronounciation
YES’s contract with DirecTV ends tomorrow and they’re still negotiating a new deal? Who’s negotiating for them, the NFL?
hahahaha
Well that’s just with YES, they’ll still have Yankee games on EI. That contract’s with MLB, and I’m pretty sure MLB still makes them broadcast the games, if not there’s the away broadcast.
aight yanks, runz plz
Those Avis ads keep making me root for the Boston guy. That’s bad marketing.
THATS BECAUSE YOAH WICKED QUEEAH
I wonder if they have a different ad for the Boston market using a guy with a Bronx accent.
I wonder if the Boston guy in the Avis ad tried to have the black guy in the Avis ad fired by framing him stealing office supplies.
No, that sort of thing only happens in the Red Sox front office.
OUR TEAM IS BETTAH THAN YOUAHS
That pitch was insane.
Hey look, Jeter grounded out on the first pitch.
/midseasonform’d
dammit jeter.
“Derek Jeter: Worst Baseball Player, He is So Old” a tragedy in two parts.
Looks like this game is going to be decided by the bullpens
I already said that
I copied this from earlier in case it is relevant to any other DirecTV customers, but also wanted to add what I am not sure of is should there be no agreement and you have MLB Extra Innings you MAY still be able to access the yankee game feed via the mix channel. I know usually the blackout rules don’t apply with the specific channel since its not dependent on your location. You would not however be able to have the game full screen.
Dr. O says:
March 31, 2011 at 2:50 pm
The way it works is DirecTV customers outside the NYC market would still have access to the opposing team feeds thru MLB X-Innings or their RSN. However no one would have YES and the NYC market would be blacked out from any game that would otherwise be available on YES, even with the X-Innings package.
Looks like this game will be decided by the bullpens.
Rita: Do you every have déjà vu?
Phil: Didn’t you just ask me that?
Didn’t a whole bunch of people originally sign up for Direct TV that horrible year there was no Yankee baseball on because Cablevision wouldn’t carry YES?
That would be me.
I hear the bullpens are going to decide this one.
I’m freaking out, man.
There’s an outside chance.
Wow, what the frig was that?
WTF. This is Inge, not Cabrera!
CC giving up way too many 2-strike hits today.
Great jump by Curtis.
Shhhh…there are those who still think he can’t field.
Grandyman.
Gardner took an interesting route to cut off that double.
Looks like My Man 100 Grand and The Camshaft are the only two defenders that want to help CC win today.
Nice play, Curt Flirt.
that was a whole shit ton of new nicknames to describe a guy with way too many nicknames in the first place…
I’ve got pages of these.
Well, I suppose I can live with 2ER (should be 1) over 6 innings. Hey, remember when CC was a notorious slow starter?
Ooooh, FOX Business is back as a sponsor again this year.
I’m already amped for Freedom Week. I’m fully torqued.
But are you stoked?
Things to look forward to…Dale Berra doing commercials telling us to horde gold.
Inge owns CC apparantly. we should sign that guy…
Thanks for the advice, Mike Francesa.
Joba needs a haircut.
and to go on a diet…
/MSM’d
Did Joba steal Mitre’s hair?
Somewhere running around Wisconsin is a bald Mitre.
acceptable 1st start for CC
a-bomb?
What are the odds that Girardi will use Soriano against Magglio, Miggy, and V-Mart even though at least one will bat in the seventh inning? I say negative a million.
He’ll go with Ayala.
Oooo
Crushed. Thought that was out.
Shit, thought that was gone.
we all did
Centaurian.
Damn! Where was the bandbox effect there huh?!?!
Warning track power. He’s finished.
Really did think that was gone.
GOT POPCORN!

Hope he isnt talking about his….
86′ed?
Damn you WIND!!! DAMN YOOOUUUUUUUU!!!!!
Stop it. Sterling. Stop it.
I can only imagine.
Is there any way I can watch this game on the computer? I used atdhe.net last season, but it’s since been shut down.
Not sure what RAB’s stance on streaming sites is…but the game is on ESPN3.com right now, if you have access.
As long as it’s legal, it’s cool. None of you are worth getting sued over.
HMPH.
It’s Cano Time.
A-Cano-BomB????
I really thought that should have been a triple, I think A-Rod assumed it was gone off the bat
Michael Kay concurs.
Wally Matthews is stoked. He has his nit to pick.
he could learn something about grit and hustle and determination from the best 3b in the league… yeah, not Longoria…
-Peter Gammons
here we go
/bud lite’d
Time for another 3 run jack
Cano just watched 5 straight pitches without swinging, this shocks me
none of them were at the eyes…
Oh hey guys.
MIMBRO!!!
Yes-Mo? Ugh.
WHAT?!
…..what.
Outside by about a foot.
Wow…that was in the other batter’s box. Horrible.
THAT. WAS. TERRIBLE.
LOL you should see where it was spotted on GameDay… here’s a hint. it almost wasnt. I had to zoom out
Yeah, I have MLB at-bat up and it was a solid plate width outside
terrible call
that’s been a ball all day
That’s been a ball for over 100 years
that was outside.. come on
FIRE EVERY FUCKING UMPIRE IN THE FUCKING MLB.
Please.
One foot outside
Great job umpire, great job!!!!
Same ol’ Swish, allergic to RBIs.
…really? blind fool…
First horrible ump ball-strike call of the season.
We couldn’t even make it 3 hours into the season before the first valid call for #robotumpsnow.
Le sigh.
Even the umps are rusty in march. Then again they suck in november too.
Rusty? They’re continuing where they fucking left off. I wish i could get paid for being stupid and blind.
“That did not catch the plate.” –Ken Singleton
“The Libyan dictator is not popular in America.”
it took 2 whole hours this year for an ump to disgrace himself improvement
hip hip?????
shit.
come on jorge
what a freakin pitch by Verlander on 3-1.. wow
That was a filthy change.
That was a nasty change on 3-1.
Good ABs this inning.
verlander is a beast 97 mph in 112 pitches yikes
Reminds me of a Nolan Ryan story. He still holds the official record for a fastball, even though it was “only” 100.9 mph. The reason why is it was recorded under validated, scientific conditions, something no one has actually tried to do since.
The 101 mph pitch, however, was recorded ten feet from home plate, instead of out of the hand as pitches are today. More amazingly, it was approximately 150th pitch he threw in the game.
Ryan was the real Freak, not Lincecum.
OK here we go…. the year of the bullpen!
this is either gonna be awesome or sucky…
last inning for verlander
bring on the sky pointer!
Man…change-up, that was tough.
Yikes, doubled up on the change. That’s not cool when the guy’s throwin 97.
Justin Verlander: good at baseball.
Wow, the change again?
Now pitching? Robertson? Joba? Ayala…ahhhhhhhh!
Justin Verlander
that’s some phenomenal pitching by Verlander. *tips cap*
It looks like the guy in that W.B. Mason commercial loves lots of donuts to go with his love of K-Cup coffee.
fyi all the hits by detroit were on the left side of our infield. Cool
And that 3-1 change up wow. Perfect spot.
3-1 change and 3-2 change. 114 pitches in March. Verlander/not bad.
/next pitcher please
You would think with a new season they would have new commercials.
You got any “new commercial” money?
Now that I won’t have DirectTV I’ll have plenty.
We could pool what the team received in exchange for Romulo…
Has anyone considered the possibility that this game might come down to bullpens?
Mind bomb.
you, sir, may be a prophet
Let’s go Joba. Silence the haters.
Hey Michael Kay: He didn’t strike him out on two straight changeups. There was a fastball mixed in between the two that Jorge fouled off. (Probably played a part in the equation.)
Thanks for trying, Austin.
Nasty hook from Joba.
Wow, today’s marquee pitching matchup followed by Penny-Burnett?
That curve was right down the middle.
It was definitely high but his hook looks good, like starting pitcher good
“like starting pitcher good”
*shakes head* what could have been
And then Verlander loses all those cool points by shoving a disgusting hunk of chaw into his piehole.
Classy.
…what!?
Man, Rhymes is not going to be well liked this year.
I was thinking the same thing. He might be right in the missed calls, yet he’s wrong. He’ll pay a price.
First 3-2 count for Joba this season, what will he throw??
Which seat can he take?
fun fun fun fun
Hey Leiland and Rhymes, did you miss that strike call to Swisher?
Yay, Joba.
We play 6 innings.
Nice, Joba.
Wow, Gardy was positioned perfectly.
Funny. Gameday shows who is on deck and in the hold. Said Cabrera – In hole..
Dominate bullpen!
My girlfriend just proposed the correct nickname for 2011 Joba:
Joba-lushi.
Amazing.
Cheeburger cheeburger cheeburger
Wow, that’s so apt
I love EVERYTHING I am hearing right now.
Axisa, can you sign off on that?
Is it because of the weight, the hair, the alcohol or the propensity to burn out quickly after a heralded early career?
Yes.
I hope that means Joba has a little chocolate donuts commercial in his near future.
Joba: “Christ. 7 years in the bullpen down the drain.”
The sense of humor.
I miss Ronan
Gentile.
Anti-semites with no legs always get a bad rap.
Those communists on ESPN cut away from “God Bless America”
I saw a tweet from feinsand in the 6th that said valverde was warming up for the tigers. Was that a typo or was he really warming up in the 6th?
The white trashification of Coke is still impressive one year later.
Phil Coke? is this the 1st inning? its like time warp!
trippy
Cured.
hashtag that shit, man.
Come on.
GRANDY MAN CAN!
BOOM.
The Grandy Man Can.
I’m home alone and I actually said “Oooo” when he hit that.
Are you suggesting to us that you’ve never once before been home alone and uttered “Ooooo” before? Me no believe it.
Not while typing with 2 hands?
Grandy! Now that’s the Phil Coke I remember…
AND THE YANKEES WIN THE TRADE!!!!
Me Gusta
CURED!
C GRAND!!!!
What is this about not hitting lefties?
Coke barely qualifies… and his stuff plays better out of the rotation????
No matter how crappy Coke is, he is still a lefty though right? RIGHT!?
Ahh, yes. Classic Coke. Still likes giving up the longball to lefthanded hitters. Love it.
Granderson!!!!!!
Coke still loyal to the Yanks even a year later
More oblique strains for Grandy…
Grandy!!!
Sterling takes everything great out of that HR by his ridiculous HR call… UGH!
WOOOOOO
Who says Curtis cant hit lefties
HAHAHA
hey ooooooo. Cured
Can’t BELIEVE Cashman traded that guy away!
Time for Soriano to start justifying the signing
Here comes a bunt
Just slap it to left.
Too early to bunt. Eighth, maybe. Not seventh. Please don’t do it.
Aaaaaand sigh…
I would love to see a hit and run here…
(groans)
Wait a second, I thought Coke was supposed to be starting? Did I miss something? (Not that I’m complaining, I’ll take that home run.)
He’s probably the fifth starter so he won’t be needed the first time through the order with tomorrow’s off day
They don’t need their fifth starter for a while, he’s in the pen for the few games of the season.
Right. I’m just following the game online, so I was a little confused. Thanks guys.
Gardner will lead the league in Sac bunts this season. lol
No problem with that bunt.
*sigh* Why bunt again?
If Gardner leading off was meant to do this, please bat him 9th again
Co-signed. He’s batting leadoff to get on base at a ridiculous rate. Let Jeter bunt with men at first and second if you need to bunt
Seriously. If we’re going to have a player in the lineup who sac bunts more than everyone else, I want that player hitting 9th every single day to minimize the number of PAs he gets.
The bunts … they’re killing me.
There’s nothing wrong with Gardner bunting.
There’s nothing wrong with a guy who is one of the best in the league at getting on base giving up an out? A guy who is nearly impossible to double up?
this
He shouldn’t be giving up an out. He should be bunting.
The problem with the sac bunt (and particularly in Gardner’s case) is not the bunt itself. It’s only a problem when the hitter isn’t even trying to get on base.
Nobody else in this little mini-conversation (Mike, Chip, Tampa Yankee, Mister Delaware, et. al.) was talking about bunting for a hit; they were all talking about sac bunting. Please don’t equivocate and change the argument.
Please don’t equivocate and change the argument.
Reply
Why not?
He should ALWAYS try to get a hit when he bunts – and it should be the same with every batter (except perhaps a pitcher that you don’t want running). The problem isn’t the call for a bunt, the problem is laying down an easy bunt right back to a pitcher. That’s an execution issue and not a strategy issue.
This is still equivocation.
All players who sacrifice bunt try to get a hit while doing so. All of them also fail to do so (despite how fast or slow they might be, mind you) at extremely high rates, which is why it’s called a sacrifice.
He’s SEVERELY decreasing his chances of getting a hit for a marginal upgrade in his chances of putting the ball in play in a manner that allows the runner on first to reach second base safely. This is because the defense anticipates the play, and it’s an extremely easy play to defend when properly anticipated.
The problem is the call for the bunt, because we all know that it’s a high-risk, low-reward play. The only non-sac bunts are the ones where you attempt to surprise the defense in a non-sac-bunt situation.
Based on last year’s matrix, expected runs went from 0.86 to 0.68. So that’s wrong.
You’re assuming that the only outcome from bunting is an out and the runner advancing. Not sure where you got the numbers for just last year, but based on 1993-2010 (from here: http://tangotiger.net/re24.html) you get the following…
Runner on 1B, 0 outs: 0.941
Runner on 2B, 1 out: .721
Runner on 1B+2B, 0 outs: 1.556
Gardner gets a hit about 30% of the time he bunts. So the run expectancy is: (0.3 * 1.556) + (0.7 * .721) = 0.9715
This is slight increase in run expectancy, thus it’s not necessarily a bad move.
Gardner gets a hit about 30% of the time he bunts.
Where’d you get that data from? Is that all bunts, only sac bunts, or only non-sac bunts?
That’s all bunts (from fangraphs).
But I don’t think it accounts for throwing errors on bunts, but I’d guess that won’t really change the numbers much.
My point is just that every time someone bunts people complain, but they shouldn’t automatically complain about bunting – it’s the execution of the bunt (i.e. not trying to get on base) that’s the problem, not simply the bunt itself.
It’s a fine distinction, but it’s one of my pet peeves.
It’s not a fine distinction, it’s a false distinction. It doesn’t work that way. All sac bunters are always trying to bunt for a hit when sac bunting, they just fail virtually all of the time because it’s an extremely difficult play to get a hit on.
All sac bunters are always trying to bunt for a hit when sac bunting
That’s not true. Most sac bunters are just trying to get a bunt down, not trying to get a hit.
But those include times where he wasn’t obviously bunting. I’m all for him dropping one down now and then when the defense isn’t exactly expecting it but not when the corners are rushing in on him. He should smack it right by the third baseman for a double.
I like the runner at 2nd with only one out. Jeter can’t ground into a DP so there’s at least a guy in SP for Tex.
What’s up with the homeless-looking Tiger relievers?
Yea another run!
Looks like some unfortunate beard/hair thing-virus has infected the Tigers’ pen.
Question: Are there no barbers in the city of Detroit?
They must all party with Miggy.
Have you been to Detroit recently?
Touché.
I think the Tiger’s middle relievers are trying to popularize the “white-trash chic” look and hope it spreads to the residents of the Detroit metro area.
/nooneactuallylivesindetroit’d
Hava Avilia
Grandy would have thrown him out
Wow, good wheels because that was smoked…
Phew, now the Yankees will still have the lead when Soriano gives up the solo homer to Cabrera to lead off the eighth.
YOU SHUT YOUR MOUTH, AXISA.
Glad to have you back.
One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with TSJC.
Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky. In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand. Sometimes there were two sets of footprints, other times there were one set of footprints.
This bothered me because I noticed that during the low periods of my life, when I was suffering from anguish, sorrow or defeat, I could see only one set of footprints.
So I said to Tommie, “You promised me, Tommie, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I have noticed that during the most trying periods of my life there have only been one set of footprints in the sand. Why, when I needed you most, have you not been there for me?”
Tommie replied, “The times when you have seen only one set of footprints, is when I left to go have sex with your mother.”
Wait… she’s been cheating on me???
I like this Martin guy.
Less nervous about last year’s hip injury, he looks like he’s running well.
Yankees just scored a run with small ball!! lol
Man those last 2 outs were hit hard.
Granderslam!!!! And I’m gonna kill Girardi on this bunting shit.
Yet it worked.
Yes, it worked perfectly, just how Girardi drew it up, with the passed ball advancing Martin like Girardi planned.
(rolls eyes)
Hey I’d bitch if nothing happened but I can’t be mad if we got a run of it whether or not the bunt actually helped.
A good result from a bad process doesn’t mean the process shouldn’t be questioned.
Hitting the lottery doesn’t mean that playing the lottery was a sound financial planning strategy in the first place.
I’m not saying it shouldn’t be questioned I’m just saying hey it worked so we shouldn’t get too worked up about it this one instance.
I mean we’re going to see a lot of bunts regardless so it’s best to try and see the brighter picture.
But meh.
Gardner should stop bunting. Leave that to Jeter.
Question: I am not watching the game (at work), but did Phil Coke point to the sky on Granderson’s homer?
I’d be really disappointed, if he didn’t.
Unfortunately not.
Good-looking breaking ball from Soriano.
i know we spent a bunch of $ of soriano, but i feel pretty good about our chances right now
question, would you still feel really good about it if Phil Coke didn’t come in about 20 minutes ago and do his best Kenny Powers impression and this was still a 3-3 game?
yes
soriano pushes everyone back a slot, meaning no boone logan in the seventh inning of a tie game
tough to give up the draft pick, but in the short term i love our bullpen
That makes up for the call on Swish.
“He got the Swisher treatment.”
Love it.
Fact: Rafael Soriano is the first Yankee to get Miguel Cabrera out this year.
Bartolo Colon has too much face.
at least he’s not sporting the short crop Jerry Curl any more… I swear the picture of him pitching to Ortiz in 2005 he looked like the cowardly lion… TYA had it this morning?
This game actually does seem to be coming down to the bullpens. You guys are good.
“I just want to tell you both good luck. We’re all counting on you.”
“Both teams played hard, my man.”
Whats up with all the empty seats behind home plate??
2500 a ticket is what
Why aren’t the players’ names on the back of the jersey?
never have been
I think you missed what I was doing there.
lol
Its so much easier watching the Yankees hold on to a lead late in the game than it is the Knicks.
Well, the one similarity…in both instances it involves putting the ball in one player’s hands while everyone else on the field stands around to see what happens.
This is not the time to be ripping Melo lol.
I’m gonna love all these flyballs for the next 3 years.
Hey, if A-Rod’s didn’t go out, that wasn’t going out
Which only makes it worse unfortunately if that’s gone on normal days.
40 degrees and free food inside
Textbook Yankee game this year. 6 decent innings from the starter, lockdown bullpen the last 3, nice offense, game over.
you seen the back end of this rotation? 6 strong IP is a bold statement
He said “decent”.
on an unrelated note, Dan Uggla is absolutely date raping my fantasy teams 2 hours into the season… very excited about that
If they spent closer money on their setup man, does that mean that Joba should get setup-man money?
I smell an A Bomb coming up.
YANKEES WON! WOOT!
JobSorMo in line for a win, hold, and a save
JoSoMo…the new word!
Or actually…DroJoSoMO
After five, all games with a lead are considered a win.
Wouldn’t it just RoJoSoMo?
If you add Boone it would be LoRoJoSoMo.
Don’t forget Bartolo. CoLoRoJoSoMo.
Sad…if only he wasn’t in Japan. Could have been RomuloCoLoRoJoSoMo.
“Or AyalRoJoSoMo? Maybe guys?” – Luis Ayala
I did, in fact, laugh.
Your correct…but can we keep it as “MO” on the end?
We shall shout his name.
What’s up with Rivera and the high socks?
Things having been going well for him the past 15 years, so he decided to change his luck with a new look.
Who cares, it’s awesome.
He’s trying to fool the opposition into thinking he’s Dave Robertson.
If he says its a tribute to HS me, I win. Just keep this in mind.
Compare it to Schlereth who’s going to trip over his pant legs.
Alex continues to look locked in.
Tigers, going to the clean cut member of their pen…
New reliever Tigers signed today.
http://www.okmagazine.com/2011.....dio-voice/ (safe)
is Schlereth really spoorting the beard that his GameDay picture has him in?
Brian Wilson Disease….
It’s a pretty standard goatee/scruff look.
Standard for 1998.
Looking forward to many more games like this.
Dammit. If Cano had bunted, Rodriguez would be on 3B now.
Oh, the lulz.
oh swisher…first baserunning error already
I wonder how many of the grievances we can cross off after today?
WTF is Swisher doing?? lol
Wow, way to dog it Mags.
swish is the man
Nice hitting.
Baserunning, um….well its early.
“•Swish will make a boneheaded play on the bases and get tagged out.”
Nice call, Mikey.
nice call
That’s the first thing I thought when I saw him get caught off of first. Over/under when that entire list is completed? Hopefully it’s more than a week
Bottom line: Swisher got the job done
think of it as a 200 ft sac bunt to score the run… super sized small ball
And now Mo for the first of many.
POSADA IS KILLING ME TODAY… DH don’t look good on him.
Good start to the Yankees year – getting in those runs with a man on 3rd and less than 2 out today.
We still love you, Cornflake.
Im just laughing at how quickly they seem to be checking things off yesterdays list of grievances. Lets get em out of the way early.
Hey new drinking game! Everytime something on the list happens have a drink.
last opening day for mo?
wtf no
Not a chance
My man, 100 Grand.
What a freaking catch.
Wow, great catch.
What. A. Catch.
Trade won
It’ll look like a routine 1-2-3 in the game log.
Granderson… damn
Oblique strain? What oblique strain?
Grandy! Highlight reel for a long long time.
I’m loving that outfield defense from the grandy man
love our center fielder
Grandy’s out there today like he has something to prove.
Grandy padding his UZR stats.
Never ever thought he had a chance at that one
Wow, Mo is completely missing his spots today but he has so much movement that he’s still getting away with it
Poor Avila.
Cmon, lets end it on a broken bat Rivera special
Or that…thank you come again.
Mo.
perfect season, anyone?
Perfect? Perfect? WE GAVE UP THREE RUNS!!!!!
It would have been two if it weren’t for that lazy Dominican.
the whole team has something to prove….34 out of 40 baseball experts picked the Blow Sox to win it all this year
Could not have scripted this one any better. Great start to the year.
Great opening game.
LOCKDOWN BULLPEN
deeply satisfying win
i love our team
Watch your ankles out there, guys.
All in all a very nice day
Damn. I hate to get all excited about 1 game, but Curtis, wow.
well, there you go. here’s to hoping the Red Sox prove us all right.
161 to go!
Hey, maybe Joba will win 20 this year after all
woot! love ending the game on a Mo strikeout
Don’t like hearing Granderson talk about bunting.
Yanks win! Mo and Ro and So and Lo and Do get the job done!
TEXTBOOK!
Check out this 2011 season preview with coverage of Jeter’s quest for 3000 and career resurrection:
http://sportstatistics.blogspo.....-year.html
I know its one game but there was alot to like…Man I hope Grandy plays like this all season..I know he did this opening game last year, but very encouraging. I also liked what I saw from Russel Martin too..Didn’t do much, but as a 9 hitter that is money.
Mo is God.
Curtis Granderson hits eighth…against righties.
Barring sig injuries, this team will hit. A lot.
This will be a fun year.
Offense – best in majors.
IF Defense – at least average.
OF Defense – outstanding.
Depth – good.
Bullpen – best in majors.
Starters – plenty adequate.
System – loaded. Gobs of trade bait if needed.
Agreed, except on rotation. Hopefully they will prove you right.
But right now, they are just CC and the question marks…
Compared to the rotations from the last 10 years, this is still one of the best.
undefeated bitches!!!
Erick Almonte just got an AB for the Brewers.
Yes, that Erick Almonte.
He’s still living?
Even crazier: with Hart injured, Mark Kotsay is their opening day RF.
AJax:
Still leading the league in K’s. Still leading the league in BABIP.
/SSS’d
Positives:
Granderson’s defense, Granderson hitting a HR off of a lefty, Mark Teixeira hitting a HR before May, Alex Rodriguez looked good, bullpen was rock solid, and CC had a pretty good off day. Martin had some good ABs, stole a base, and looked good behind the plate. Scored five runs when Verlander started, and obviously the win was the best part.
Negatives:
Jeter looked like shit at the plate and in the field, CC was still off, the INF looked awful across the board, and I’m concerned about Gardner going back to sucking.
Good thing we still have 161 games to figure things out.
My only long term concerns (resulting from this game) are Jeter, the infield defense, and Gardner’s bat. I’m worried about the 4th and 5th starter too, but I’ll wait for Nova or Garcia to have a shitty start before I bitch about that. Good win, fun game, great way to start the season!
jeter walked, scored a run, and had a hard hit sac fly RBI. Not his best effort but I wouldnt say he looked like shit at the plate. Its one game. Geeze
I’m concerned about him long term, though. He’s kinda my Burnett of the line up, he’s going to be here for another three years and he’s a big part of the team coming off of a crapy year. He didn’t do much to quell my concerns although looking bad against Justin Verlander isn’t a bad thing.
Its ok to have legit concerns about him going forward, but I just think saying he looked like shit today was a little overboard.
I think you’re overstating the case against CC. He only walked two and struck out seven.
I agree…CC was fine..He isnt exactly the best early season..he was more than adequate.
Just a little off, he’ll straighten it out. Cano also had a rough day at the plate, but I’m sure he’ll fix that. Positives and negatives to every game (except no hitters)
162-0
So what happened to Phil Coke starting? He’s still listed as their fifth starter. Apparently they are going to start the year with a four man rotation because of the off day. Tough to get an L before you even get your first start.
Tigers have a couple of off days, thus no need for a fifth starter.
Joba’s K/BB rate: INF
/winningacategory
/rltw
Good win for the Yankees today and the back of the bullpen looked good with Joba, Soriano, and obviously Rivera. Weird to see Texiera actually get some RBIs in April. I was fully expecting to wait three weeks for him to get a hit.
