ST Game Thread: Another look at Banuelos

This afternoon could be the last time we get to see Manny Banuelos for a while, unless you plan on trekking down to Trenton at some point this summer. Brian Cashman remains adamant that both Banuelos and Dellin Betances will begin the year at the Double-A level, though Joe Girardi indicated that both will probably get one more appearance in with the big boys before heading down to minor league camp. The regular season is less than two weeks away, so there’s only so many innings to go around.

Banuelos is scheduled to pitch at some point today, but that probably won’t come until after Freddy Garcia makes his latest case for a rotation spot and Mariano Rivera does his thing for an inning. Here’s the lineup…

Derek Jeter, SS
Eduardo Nunez, LF
Mark Teixeira, 1B
Alex Rodriguez, 3B
Robbie Cano, 2B
Jorge Posada, DH
Andruw Jones, RF
Austin Romine, C
Melky Mesa, CF

Available Pitchers: Freddy Garcia, Mariano Rivera, Manny Banuelos, Mark Prior, Luis Ayala, Steve Garrison, Eric Wordekemper, Ryan Pope, and Wilkins Arias.

Available Position Players: Jesus Montero (C), Eric Chavez (1B), Kevin Russo (2B), Doug Bernier (SS), Ronnie Belliard (3B), Ramiro Pena (LF), Justin Maxwell (CF), Jordan Parraz (RF), and Gustavo Molina (DH).

Today’s game will be broadcast on the YES Network, with first pitch scheduled for 1:05pm ET. If you miss it because you were spending this lovely Saturday afternoon outside, it will be rebroadcast by both the MLB Network and YES later this evening. Enjoy.

    excellent 1st inning for Garcia

  2. Mike Axisa says:

If Sweaty Freddy can’t cruise through the lineup the Jays threw out there today, he’s got problems.

  3. Ultimate Yankee Warrior (James) says:

I hope Freddy Garcia gets his ass handed to him and leaves after 1.2 innings.

  4. Urban says:

I saw a reference to Brackman pitching last night. Wasn’t he assigned to AAA/minor league camp several days back?

    • Mike Axisa says:

Just a paper move, they can still pitch in big league games.

    • Cuso says:

yep. was trying to figure that out as well. i saw another article that said he was “recalled” too.

didn’t know those maneuvers applied in ST

    • MikeD says:

Perhaps the injuries to Joba, Logan and other bullpen arms caused them to keep Brackman around a little longer and reactivate him, if such a requirement exists in Spring Training.

  5. Cuso says:

    eeer-neerrr-beeerrrrr-yip!!

someone needs to find out the home address of the concession guy

  6. Cy Pettitte says:

    A-rod is unstoppable

  7. Cuso says:

    just stay healthy, A-Rod

  8. Cuso says:

    Obi-Wan Cano-biiiiiii!!!!

man, that was on his hands!!

  9. Cy Pettitte says:

Robbie finally gets one, nice. Maybe he’s gonna heat up heading into the season

  10. mike_h says:

    DAMN, bomb by Cano

save some for opening day guys

  11. YanksFan says:

You can also listen to the game on radio if you’re like me & have to be at work at the moment.

  12. Poopy Pants says:

Those anti-smoking commercials cause me to constantly change away from YES between innings.

  13. mike_h says:

loving the ground ball outs by Garica

  14. Ultimate Yankee Warrior (James) says:

Fcuking Freddy Garcia. Glad to know you. You’ll be with this team through June, at least. Awesome.

  15. Tank the Frank says:

    Jeter is a groundball machine.

  16. dutchsailor says:

These guys that are in competition for the 4th and 5th spots really need to be pitching on the road — when the other teams are on the road, they always send their B team, so you can’t really tell how well Garcia, for instance, matches up against the regular lineup. This is not the lineup that toronto will field on opening day.

  17. mike_h says:

geez what happened Garcia, getting smacked around here

  18. dutchsailor says:

Got smacked around, but nice to be able to get two strikeouts to stop the bleeding.

  19. Cy Pettitte says:

    #firefreddy

  20. NJYankeeFan says:

That weak crap Freddy is throwing up there isn’t gonna cut it in the AL east. He’ll be heading to the NL where he belongs before too long.

  21. Cy Pettitte says:

Nunez in LF, what an adventure

  22. MikeD says:

Wow, 98 pitches for Cecil in a Spring Training game, with the bases loaded. Not sure how far he’s pitched in previous games, but not sure what they’re gaining by pushing him this early.

  23. Naved says:

    ooooo Monster homerun for Cooper

    • AnthonyNH says:

Freddy looked like he put the slider in the right place, it was just the wrong pitch. His location has looked good for the most part.

  24. MikeD says:

Great. Freddie Garcia is the only person in the world who found D.B. Cooper.

  25. Cuso says:

anything traveling that far ought to have a stewardess and an in-flight meal

  26. NJYankeeFan says:

The reason Cashman was scouting Kevin Millwood last week is becoming more apparent. Garcia is WEAK.

  27. James A says:

Where are Aaron Small and Shawn Chacon when you need them?

  28. Cult of Basebaal says:

    Nicely done by Nunez.

    Shoddy defense by the Jays.

  29. RalphieD says:

so many hitters for the yankees just looked locked in right now…too bad this wasnt the regular season

  30. Cuso says:

can’t believe that’s the same Loewyn that used to pitch for the O’s. He actually looks ‘hitterish.’

  31. Cult of Basebaal says:

Speaking of locked in: 9 pitches, 8 strikes, 2Ks, 3 outs.

    Praise be to Mo.

  32. Nuke Ladoosh says:

    Movelous

  33. Cuso says:

can’t believe he just watched those 1st two pitches

  34. bexarama says:

Mo is boring, and I mean this in the best way possible. Not even fair.

  35. Hughesus Christo says:

So Mark Prior. Does he have an opt-out if he doesn’t make the MLB team?

    • mbonzo says:

      94 on the gun. WTF!?

    • MikeD says:

From what I’ve read, there is already an understanding between the Yankees and Prior that he will start the season in AAA to continue building up his arm strength. He didn’t come to the Yankees with a “I make the pitching staff or I walk” attitude, so I suspect he’ll be around.

  36. smurfy says:

Prior looked much better today, like his motion was better tuned in.

  37. Cuso says:

doesn’t Jorge Vasquez just ‘seem’ like a guy that will end up on the Pirates?

  38. Cy Pettitte says:

guess we will get to see ManBan

  39. Cuso says:

    bonus baseball in Spring

  40. JobaWockeeZ says:

    Ugh no Banuelos? Weak.

  41. smurfy says:

they seem to be saving Manny for Sunday.

  42. smurfy says:

Garrison just did keep it in the house.

  43. Charles says:

No Banuelos makes me a sad Panda :(

Is the Blue Jay’s left fielder Thames related to Marcus Thames?

  44. smurfy says:

man – Banuelos is working in the bullpen..
