Game 66: A different kind of lineup

Apparently unimpressed by Brett Gardner‘s a) 3-for-4 with a walk performance last night, b) his .364 OBP against left-handed pitchers this year, and c) his .361 OBP against left-handed pitchers in his career, Joe Girardi is sitting his regular left fielder tonight in favor of Andruw Jones against southpaw Derek Holland. With Derek Jeter on the disabled list and Gardner on bench, tonight’s leadoff hitter is … Nick Swisher. Swish is hitting .356/.438/.576 against lefties this year and did spend some time batting leadoff for the White Sox a few years ago, so it won’t be completely foreign. Plus it’s not like he has to change his game, he’s just got to keep doing what he’s been doing against lefties this year, that’s all. Don’t change a thing. Here’s the rest of the lineup…

Nick Swisher, RF
Curtis Granderson, CF
Mark Teixeira, 1B
Alex Rodriguez, DH
Robinson Cano, 2B
Andruw Jones, LF
Eduardo Nunez, SS
Frankie Cervelli, C
Ramiro Pena, 3B

Ivan Nova, SP

The weather has been gorgeous all day and will remain that way this evening. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm ET and it can be seen on YES locally and ESPN nationally. Enjoy.

Transaction Updates (6:40 p.m.) The Yankees made a flurry of pre-game transactions this evening. The club announced they have signed Cory Wade to a Major League deal and added him to the 25-man roster. Kevin Whelan has been sent down to AAA, and to make room for Wade on the 40-man, Rafael Soriano has been moved to the 60-day DL. He will not be eligible to come off until July 12.

Wade, who will wear number 53, has thrown well for AAA this year. In 38.1 innings with the Rays’ Durham franchise and Scranton, he has gone 3-1 with a 1.17 ERA. He has struck out 35 and walked just six. The 28-year-old last pitched in the Majors in 2009. In parts of two seasons with the Dodgers, he threw 99 innings with a 3.18 ERA and struck out 69 while walking 25. If anything, he’s likely to throw more strikes than Whelan and provides the bullpen with some much-needed depth.

Why DH Arod? I think Jorge as a RHH is slightly less useless than Pena

    • http://www.secondavenuesagas.com Benjamin Kabak

That is to give A-Rod the halfday off. The choice was either Pena and A-Rod or Pena and Jorge (who is bad against LHP), not A-Rod and Jorge.

    • Phil

Gotta love Ramiro Pena getting some a/b’s against anyone. Not only can he pick it defensively, but the kid can flat-out rake!

Nice shot into the right-centerfield bleachers to make it 7-4 and a really great a/b. I think this kid has finally grown up and is a better than replacement value shortstop who is versatile enough to play 3b & 2b too.

  • TCMiller30

Gotta love Andruw Jones getting some playing time..

    If you’re Derek Holland.

    • YankeesJunkie

Not so sure about that. Jones can pop a home run and he would be extremely valuable for the day. He also needs to get playing time to stay fresh.

      • TCMiller30

I’d rather him just not get more playing time..

  • Cy Pettitte

Yankees have signed RHP Cory Wade and added him to the MLB roster. Hmm?

    http://twitter.com/#!/BryanHoc.....9439569920

    who?

  • http://twitter.com/tjamato T.J.

The bottom third of the lineup is a black hole.

    • dalelama

      I think the bottom 44% is a black hole….LOL

    • Phil

That “”black hole” of the bottom third of the order is 4-8 w/two dingers and each guy w/at least a hit. I’ll take that black (w)hole all 162+.

  • radnom

    Frankie Cervelli, C

I’ve been pretty patient regarding Montero over the past few months, but I am officially about three days past the “he should have been called up before now phase”. I reached this point after Martin’s failed attempt to return to the lineup.

Why even push it? He is a guy who has complained of overuse in the past and is coming off some nasty injuries that really sapped his effectiveness. Considering the current roster situation, Montero not being called up is completely incomprehensible unless either 1) He isn’t 100% healthy right now (possible) or 2) They know with certainty that Martin is completely fine and will be 100% within a few days.

    • http://www.secondavenuesagas.com Benjamin Kabak

Jack Curry, for what it’s worth, thinks the Yanks are more likely to call up Romine as a defensive backup while giving Cervelli the bulk of the playing time if the Yanks DL Martin. They want Montero to play everyday, and they also “want to give Cervelli a chance.”

Francisco Cervelli, the backup catcher with nine lives.

      • FIPster Doofus

        Ugh.

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Well that won’t happy. Romine’s on the DL with a concussion.

        • TCMiller30

Apparently Curry is making stuff up. That’d be an interesting move calling up a player on the DL.

      • Monteroisdinero

        Montero should play everyday. For.the.varsity.right.now.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Killer G’s?

    Granderson and Gardner gangstas?

    • Pasta

      GwG

      Gangstas w/ Grit

      • Tom Zig

Granderson cannot be gritty. He is athletic.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

This game will get me ready for having a pitcher hit in the NL parks.
    Hurry back, Eric.

  • Montero’s Agent

The bottom of the line-up looks like something Joe would have sent out as manager of the Marlins.

  • jay h

    the binder has spoken

  • Guy Montag

So Girardi sits two of his hottest hitters for Pena and Jones? Gotta have the righty lefty matchups!

  • Rough Around the Edges

Bold statement: the bottom 4 will out hit the top 5 hitters

    • Guest

That’s pretty much as bold as it gets.

  • http://twitter.com/kschmidt2 Kiersten

    C- lineup? C- lineup. Sigh.

    • King of Fruitless Hypotheticals

with the benefit of hindsight, i’m going to give them a B+

  • Guest

So…Pena is a better option against a lefty than Jorge? Pena struggles big time (even for Pena) against lefties. I know Jorge has struggled against lefties this year, but it is a pretty extreme aberration from his career numbers. Plus he’s hotter than (insert name of hot person here). Hopefully, he just wanted to give A-Rod a “DH-day” and figured now was as good a time as any.

And still no Martin on the DL. Amazing stuff. Also, if what Ben says about them preferring to bring up Romine over Montero if they are going to call up a prospect at catcher is true, I, I, I just don’t know what to think anymore.

Montero’s not ready but Romine is? Wasn’t Romine struggling to hit AA pitching um…last year? Isn’t he still in AA? Hasn’t he had not one single at bat above AA? If calling up Montero would stunt his development, what in the expletive would calling up Romine do to Romine’s development?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: either the Yanks feel that Montero must be protected like a fabrege egg, or something really major is up.

    • YankeesJunkie

While Romine has played well offensively this year and Montero has been slumping what would the Yankees be showing if they jumped Romine over Montero to the majors. If the Yankees don’t think Montero can catch then they need to trade him because Tex is going to be at 1B for the next 5.5 years.

  • YankeesJunkie

What do you mean give Cervelli a chance? He has gotten more than a chance to show what he can give to the Yankees and outside April 2010 he has been beyond worthless. I could understand and approve him playing if he was playing defense like Molina, fact of the matter is he has gotten a chance and is no more than a back up who can’t throw out any runners. Time to give Montero a shot.

  • S

if martin is going to miss this many games, just dl him so he can recover and call up Jesus

    • MannyGeee

1/2 of this. If Martin is gonna miss the time, put him on the DL and use the poster spot, ESPECIALLY with interleague coming up.

bringing up Montero, as much as we would love him to be, should be an aside of this conversation.

  • Greg

Gardner will get in this game. I guarantee that.

    • Rough Around the Edges

Rangers will be running on Cervelli all night long. I guarantee that!

  • Pat D

    http://sports.espn.go.com/new-.....id=6665618

I think we’ve discussed this before, but, yea, this guy got a great deal.

I’m supposing it would be unethical for MLB to provide any money to the Wilpons at this point, right? Considering that said money could be used to pay back Einhorn.

  • Greg

I am also convinced that Montero has not been up because the Yanks do not want to hurt his trade value.

    • YankeesJunkie

This. If Montero were just a slightly below average defensive catcher he would have been up last week.

    • Sheepmeister

I feel it may have the opposite effect though since teams may ask why he hasn’t been called up and then question his value if the yankees don’t think he is valuable enough to start on their team.

      • Rainbow Connection

The Yanks can say they have a possible All-Star catcher, and a huge log jam of old dudes at DH/1B.

      • #24!!!!

        could go either way

    • Rainbow Connection

      This.

    • JobaWockeeZ

Why would any team lower their stock on Montero because of a few PA’s in which he may struggle?

    • AC

Greg your right But I’m tired of hearing that line from the team though

    • Karl Krawfid

Teams don’t have scouts to scout players?

  • Skip

What’s the news on Gordon? Did we sign him at 6 or not?

  • MikeD

It’s almost as if the Onion writers are based in NY. Oh, I think they might be.

    • MannyGeee

      fucking hilarious

NEW YORK—Yankees captain Derek Jeter hit a seeing-eye wormburner through the left side of the infield for his 2,994th career hit Monday, leaving him just six toppers down the third-base line, Texas Leaguers, or check-swing humpback liners short of 3,000 hits.

    • JohnnyC

I guess they’ve never seen Ichiro play.

  • Greg

They are going to be swinging early in the counts, which could work to our advantage.

  • Greg

    That’s Nova’s fault.

  • Cy Pettitte

    I hate Cervelli so much

    • Greg

That was Nova’s fault. Even though your point is taken.

  • Justin

I guess its a good thing Cervelli throws into left-center field now instead of right center?

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

And that’s the catcher that Cashman wants to “give a chance”

  • http://RAB Nuke LaDoosh

    good throw has him

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Yeah that was on Nova.

  • MikeD

Wow, that was unexpected. I mean expected.

  • xnyles

    Big spot right here

  • King George

Let the starting pitcher trade talk commence in 3…2…1…go

    • Jimmy McNulty

Liriano has been good since coming off the DL!!!!

  • Cy Pettitte

    Kuroda please

    • bonestock94

Kuroda strikes me as impossible. He took an undermarket deal early, didn’t appear to even test the market, just to stay in LA. I can’t imagine him waiving his NTC.

    • Tom Zig

What’s the fascination with Kuroda? 36 years old. Low K numbers. (But also low BB numbers.)

I mean sure he’s probably better than AJ Burnett, Nova, and Garcia, but is he better enough to warrant trading something of value for?

  • Greg

Nunez has to get to that ball.

    • Greg

      on second thought…

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    Wow Nova

  • bonestock94

Shit, Hamilton missed that much time for drugs? Wow, I thought there were injuries mixed in there.

    • YankeesJunkie

      Mainly drugs.

    • mike c

you get a lot of injuries when you’re a crackhead apparently

      • MannyGeee

being a tweaker takes up alot of sick days.

  • Freddy’s Mom

Now it’s their turn. Looking already like it could be a big inning. Better hope we can hit Wilson.

  • Kostas

Long night ahead. Buckle in and get comfortable. Or turn on game 7 of the NHL finals.

  • King George

Watching this fucking atrocious combo of Nova and Cervelli is eating at my insides. So bad.

    • Skip

Nova is doing his job. Every ball except for that first one to Kinsler has been a weak dribbler on the ground. That’s what you expect out of a sinkerballer.

Cervelli…yeah, not much to say there.

    • Sheepmeister

wait until the bottom 1/3 of the lineup is up to bat.

    • bonestock94

I can take Nova for what he is, a young pitcher with control issues. I can’t deal with Cervelli, there seems to be a ton of no bat all glove free agent catchers available every year. Cervelli has neither.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Alright, two runs is no big deal.

  • first time lawng time

    What a shitty lineup.

Where’s Jorge? I’d let him catch instead of Cervelli.

Get rid of Jones; he’s useless.

  • Cy Pettitte

    Cruz looks sooooooooooooooooo bad

  • Montero21

what the hell is going on??? Martin still is out and Montero is off today for SWB ( no games today) I guess the Yanks would rather have a 40% Martin on the bench and a terrible Cervelli rather then their top prospect who is a catcher. Can someone please explain this to me. BTW PLEASE STOP WITH THE ROMINE CRAP, HE’S CONCUSED AND NOT EVEN CLOSE TO COMING TO NY

    • Greg

Again, its because the Yankees dont want him to lose trade value. Especially since his defense is bad.

      • Karl Krawfid

This doesn’t make a bit of sense.

      • JobaWockeeZ

If eh struggles he struggles like many other young baseball player.s Did Smoak lose trade value because he didn’t rake right away?

And it’s not like a scout can go to Scranton and see his bad defense there or anything.

A lot of teams probably scouted Montero at this point, there’s nothing to hide.

    • JobaWockeeZ

Either Montero slept with a lot of wives or Cashman wants him to play every day because he’s their top prospect and needs to play like one.

      • Stratman9652

See, the playing everyday thing is what gets me. During ST they were pretty open to the idea of “Posadaing” him and letting him split time half and half with Martin to get him adjusted. Now Cash is saying that if he isn’t THE starting catcher he won’t be called up?

    • http://www.mystiqueandaura.com/ JMK

What reasonable person is bringing up Romine?

      Key word: reasonable

      • Karl Krawfid

Dude just had a concussion last week and hasn’t even started baseball activities since then.

        • http://www.mystiqueandaura.com/ JMK

          Right and…?

  • James A

If they’re going to run successfully with reckless abandon on Cervelli (which people are worried will happen with Montero), what is the point of having him on the roster? In 416 career AB’s he has a .662 OPS, I guarantee you Montero can do a lot better than that.

    • http://www.mystiqueandaura.com/ JMK

See, but it’s probably more nuanced than that. First, Montero is not exactly destroying AAA; second, he’s been out for undisclosed reasons that could be something of a punishment; and third, if he struggles, it could bring a lot of undue pressure onto the guy when he’s not ready.

I don’t know the state of his ‘mental toughness’ and certainly would rather see just about anyone but Cervelli catch, but I’m ok with Montero staying down in AAA for now.

Heh. Even Kay thought the bottom of the order was bad.

  • first time lawng time

    • Greg

      Incorrect. Nunez can hit

      • first time lawng time

Yeah, but I still don’t have faith in him.

      • http://www.mystiqueandaura.com/ JMK

Meh, jury’s still out on that one.

  • Kostas

Curious, was there no better options to fill a bench than Andrew Jones? Just seems to be such a waste of a roster spot.

  • James A

Alright, game plan for everyone not named Granderson, Tex, A-Rod, and Cano. Don’t swing

    • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

  • http://www.mystiqueandaura.com/ JMK

I’m thrilled with Teix’s season but is anyone surprised that his average has declined so much in the past few seasons?

    • Rainbow Connection

Average is meaningless. If you spent more time in your mother’s basement, you’d know that.

      • http://www.mystiqueandaura.com/ JMK

I’m not sure if this is trolling or not, but average is not meaningless. Do other statistics provide a more accurate picture of a player’s value? Sure, but to say it’s meaningless is flat-out wrong.

        • Rainbow Connection

I’m just trying to fit in with everyone here.
A SP’s wins are meaningless, too, unless a Yankee SP has a lot of wins.
          Am I doing ok?

          • JobaWockeeZ

No, people aren’t annoying when point it out.

        • Jose the Satirist

The big issue with the decreased batting average is it lowered his OBP. His IsoD has actually gone up in recent years, but it just hasn’t made up for that decreased batting average.

        • JobaWockeeZ

He’s mocking RAB probably because of how a lot of people dismiss it.

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

No, his thing is building strawman arguments, tearing them down, then going “/RAB commenters” as if he’s not included in the general population.

    • Tom Zig

Extremely surprised. I know Batting average isn’t perfect, but 34 points off his average and over 50 off his career high is pretty significant.

    • JobaWockeeZ

His LD rate was the same in 2009 and 2010 it’s just that he got a bit unlucky. But this year he’s hitting for FB probably trying to get more homers due to the short porch.

    • bonestock94

His BABIP and OBP is lower than it was in the past in 2010 and 2011 so far.

    Cervelli….you need to boost that .176 average….get a hit.

  • bonestock94

That Mets-Cards series was awesome, I bet my friend $50 that they wouldn’t make it to the WS in January. Made the Beltran K so sweet.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

(insert comment about how bad Cervelli is here)

  • swishers fauxhawk

    Montero could have done that.

    • Greg

      and lessen his trade value.

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Yeah, Texas really killed Justin Smoak’s trade value by letting him hit .209/.316/.353 in 275 PA before they found someone dumb enough to take him.

        • YankeesJunkie

At least Cervelli plays great defense with an arm that can get Grandrson on just one bounce!

  • Montero21

I hate Cervelli and up comes his shitty brother Pena…..when I went to NY games last year those 2 walk around like Mantle & Maris, unreal

    • Kostas

Hate? Kind of brutal for two guys that have no significance in your life, don’t you think.

    • Turtle

      You are one angry person.

    • Rainbow Connection

They were walking around like dead people?

    • MannyGeee

I got to try something real quick:

what are your feelings on Mark Teixiera and Jason Giambi’s defensive prowess?

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Whoa, what’s up new stance Ramiro Pena?

    • Jimmy McNulty

He figured he couldn’t possibily be any shittier than old stance Ramiro Pena.

    • MannyGeee

that what all the kids in Scranton are doing…

    • Stratman9652

Whatever it is, it seems to be working for him. I saw him play over the weekend and every ball he hit he friggin crushed, the ball sounded great off his bat. Didn’t look like the old noodle bat Pena at all.

  • Montero21

Pena is good for 3 hits a year, now he used up one already…GREAT

  • Karl Krawfid

Pena has been kinda hot at AAA.

Nice to see him get a hit.

  • Jimmy McNulty

    Awesome double.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Whaaaa why is Nick Swisher leading off.

    • Jimmy McNulty

Jeter would have gotten on in the first, GIDPed in the next AB.

  • aRX

    3 run jack?

  • IRF

There better be a GIF of that in the morning. Get on it Internet

  • Pastadivingpena

Beltre always has that pissed off steroid look .

  • Greg

Its Girardi knows what he’s doing

  • MannyGeee

the BABIP gods agree with “Jeter on the DL talk for the past 20 minutes on ESPN, including in depth analysis on calfs and the SS position by Barry Larkin and Nomar Garciaparra”

    good for Swish

  • Jimmy McNulty

Playing the game the right way! Manufacturing runs!

God damnit I wanted a fucking HR.

  • Feim

Damn! Kazmir released and still unsigned by Yanks?

    • bonestock94

      He’s really bad

  • Jose the Satirist

There was a stretch during that year where Mantle hit 17 HR in 28 games and had around a 1.500 OPS.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Maris didn’t even get hot until the start of May either.

  • Cy Pettitte

    Kinsler HR? ew

  • Greg

That didnt sound like a homer to me.

  • aRX

I forgot he could do that. Meh.

  • Pastadivingpena

    Fargin NOVA

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

And Nova gives it right back. First batter.

    • Greg

Honestly Mike we expected this kind of game.

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

        Yeah I know.

    • MannyGeee

every game is an adventure with Nova, ain’t it.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    Good thing we crush Holland

  • Rough Around the Edges

I loved CGrand’s reaction on the HR.

  • King George

Where are all you sad Nova apologists now??

    • Rainbow Connection

“He’s relly relly kool because he threw at battista!?! how DARE anyone but the yankees hit hr’s! nova has ballz!?!”

  • Skip

Jeter mentoring Nunez? No wonder Eduardo swung at the first pitch, bases loaded, right after a walk. It all makes sense now.

    • #24!!!!

      ha!

    • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

It would have been a base hit if Holland hadn’t slowed it down with his glove.

  • Pastadivingpena

So nova throwing batting practice now?

  • dkidd

    i’ll settle for a double

nova + hamilton = bad news

  • http://RAB Nuke LaDoosh

am I supposed to know who Bald Vinny is?

  • first time lawng time

    OMG that is so cute.

  • Karl Krawfid

Don’t like the Yankees playing that shallow with Nova pitching.

  • Pastadivingpena

Over and under on seeing noesi tonight?

    • MannyGeee

4.2 IP before they play Noesi’s music

  • MannyGeee

Granderson getting burned deep, that doesnt happen much. at all.

  • Ivan

Might be one of them 10-9 games here.

  • M-Three

I got no problem with adding Cory Wade to the pen. I remember when he was the Dodger set-up man a few years ago in the postseason and he did a solid job. The kid does throw strikes which is a good.

Plus, I know I will get ripped for this but I really just don’t trust Luis Ayala. I know someone will say looks at his numbers this year but as Michael Kay said during the game on Sunday Ayala has had no pressure on him so far. To me its just a matter of time until he become the same pitcher he was the last few years pitching to a 5 era and giving up many more hits than innings pitched. I would much rather see Noesi pitch the 7th inning and be the 2nd set-up man. He has better stuff and can throw more than 1 pitch. In fact I believe that Noesi throws 5 different pitches.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

I don’t think anyone trusts Ayala. I just trust the rest of the bullpen even less.

      • MannyGeee

funny, I always thought he had a real trusting face… I would totally buy a used Hyundai from him.

      • M-Three

The only guys I trust in the pen are Mo, Robertson, maybe Logan if can start throwing strikes and Noesi. I much rather see the young arms get a chance in the late innings than journey man relievers like Ayala who can’t even reach 90 on his fastball.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Jesus Christ Cano

  • Greg

    that’s a tough play

  • Hummingbird S.

Only hard hit balls against Nova..

  • dkidd

    flat lazy

  • MannyGeee

hoe-lee-shit is this gonna be one of those games

  • Ivan

9/10 times Cano makes that throw on point.

    • MannyGeee

tough play and he rushed the throw. Micheal YOung was coming hard down the line

  • BklynJT

Robbie plays his worse defense when Nova is on the mound.

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

Derek Jeter would have made that play.

  • Monteroisdinero

Texas has a pretty good offense folks but Robbie looked like Nunez on that throw. Thank God it wasn’t Nunez.

  • IRF

How the hell is that a nice play Michael Kay? He circled around the ball

  • Guy Montag

I hope they bring in Noesi soon. We can get more runs off Holland but Nova doesn’t look good against their good hitters.

  • Pastadivingpena

Flip nova and noesi nova has stuff that is better suited for the pen

    • MannyGeee

funny this time last year the same was said about Nova and Javy.

lack of reactionary management is why Cashman is the GM of the New York Yankees and we are posting on blogs with our dicks in our hands.

      • bonestock94

        That’s refreshing

      • dkidd

speak for yourself. my dick is securely inside my yankee footie jammies my mommy bought for me

      • MannyGeee

All this said, as I get down off my soapbox, I am ready to see Noesi tonight. Nova is trying to kill me

    • http://RAB Nuke LaDoosh

That was my first thought when Colon got injured. I still agree.

  • dkidd

robbie needs to run that out. there are kids watching!

  • MannyGeee

before I die, all i want to see is Cano LEG OUT AS FCKING GROUNDER!!!!!!

pretend they’re paying you, jack ass

    • Hummingbird S.

I don’t see a problem.. if he ran hard he still would have been out

      • MannyGeee

its not so much this play as much as its every play.

        • Hummingbird S.

and it shouldn’t be a problem either. With his below average speed he’s not going to be picking up infield hits by busting it down the line. It’s more likely that he gets injured doing it.

        • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

Robinson Cano is not a gritty player. There’s nothing you can do about that.

      • TCMiller30

And he may have strained his calf

    • Monteroisdinero

Swish never runs hard down the line either.

    • Rough Around the Edges

before I die all i want to see is Cervelli catch a damn foul tip

  • Kostas

Josh Johnson to the 60 day DL. Ouch. That hurts.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Todd Helton and Ichiro for the trivia? Has to be.

    • MannyGeee

whats the question? I am on ESPN

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Other than Jeter and Young, what two active players lead their franchises in hits?

        • MannyGeee

then ya, Ichiro and Helton have to be it. although my next guess mighta been Chipper.

      • Greg

Two active players who are their franxhises’s hits leader besides Jeter and Young

    • Greg

Correct. Helton was the one I couldn’t think of.

  • dkidd

    lol cervelli

  • Greg

Good throw wouldn’t have gotten him I dont think so no anger.

    • dkidd

      there’s always anger. always!!!

    • MannyGeee

we may never find out with this asshole behind the plate

  • Hummingbird S.

    Cervelli stinks..

  • Cy Pettitte

    wtf is Cervelli doing? christ.

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

    Cervelli is a soldier

  • Pastadivingpena

My 8 yr old niece could have thrown the ball harder than cervelli just did
    Bring up molina

  • Jetrer

yet another great throw by Cervelli

  • http://RAB Nuke LaDoosh

    Franchucksco Cervknoblauchelli

  • MannyGeee

sorry, I am officially on the bandwagon. Montero needs to be called up. Cervelli is just chucking it around at this point.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

I would like Cervelli to throw the ball right on the bag at least once this season.

  • TCMiller30

Gotta love the back up catcher with poor D and no bat!!!

  • Rough Around the Edges

C’mon Cervelli. I’ve seen 8 yr old girls throw better than that!

    • TCMiller30

Someone has been creeping on Pastadivingpenas 8 year old niece.. weird

      • Pastadivingpenas 8 year old niece

seriously, keep that guy away from me….

        • TCMiller30

          haha well played sir

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    Fucking Cervelli

  • Kostas

Heard a debate on Colorado radio about whether or not Todd Helton is Hall of Fame material. Answer was he would have to get 3000 hits to make it because of the Coors’ field effect. Argument was that the high number of doubles Helton has would be discounted because many “doubles” at Coors would be singles in any other park. Interesting.

    • MannyGeee

very interesting. IMO if Mattingly isnt in, then Helton isn’t in. same type of hitter, but Donnie did it better, and in a major market.

      • Guest

Helton did it longer. Much, much longer.

        /Still sad about Mattingly’s back injuries’d

  • Guest

    Alright, that’s it.

This iis ridiculous. This has to stop. I’ve even given up on the Montero thing (though I still don’t understand it).

Bring up Molina. Bring up the concussed underdeveloped Romine. The Frankie Cervelli Experience needs to come to an end.

  • sean

cervelli sucks..why is he still on this team?

  • Monteroisdinero

Kinsler needs to be brushed back. He is getting too comfy on the inner half.

  • Guest

    Suggested meme:

    lol cervelli whatevs…

For every bad throw/at-bat where the hitter looks completely overmatched and outclassed

  • Pastadivingpena

    GUSTAVO MOLINA FAN CLUB
    Now taking new members.

    • Rough Around the Edges

Your 8 year old niece’s fan club. LOL.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Cervelli needs to go

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

Cashman obviously doesn’t want to call up Montero. So why not give Gus Molina another go?

    • Guy Montag

I hope Martin not playing tonight means he’ll play the day game tomorrow. They weren’t going to play him in both anyway.

  • aRX

If I’m them, I’d run wild. Until Cervelli proves he can throw straight, except for the absolute slowest runners, why not?

  • http://RAB Nuke LaDoosh

how nice would it be if a Boston team loses a game 7 tonight

    • aRX

I’m rooting for Vancouver so hard tonight. I’m not even really that into hockey, but fuck all 4 Boston teams winning titles the last decade.

    • MannyGeee

not as nice as it would be to see a sackless Rays team beat up on Josh Beckett… but still

      • Rough Around the Edges

Nah, still rather have the Bruins lose. I less thing for them Boston douches to brag about.

    • Rough Around the Edges

      I’d love that.

  • sean

just bring up montero COME ON!!!!!!

  • Pastadivingpena

Someone needs to fart on cervelli’s pillow and give him the old pink eye

    • Rough Around the Edges

That’s just cruel. He’s already at a disadvantage to get thru life.

      • Pastadivingpena

Well joba and montero have both had it this year so i think cashman is going around farting on player pillows.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

That may have been the world’s longest scoreless half-inning.

    • Monteroisdinero

      Mike,

I know you dislike Nova and Nunez but these guys are both 24 and have potential/skills/health.

      Patience.

  • Sheepmeister

Nova probably shouldn’t even take his glove off with the bottom 1/3 of the line up coming up.

  • Pastadivingpena

    Cervelli=Cody Ransome bad!

  • MannyGeee

do you think Girardi goes to the locker and drinks like Lindsey Lohan knowing that he spent his entire professional career being a decent defensive catcher and now he has to watch this asshole throw the ball arond like an 8 YO kid with ADD?

    I would…

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Nunez!

  • Karl Krawfid

    Nunez!

no longer wally pipp’d , now eduardo nunez’d

  • MannyGeee

anyone else listening to Nomar babble?

  • Cy Pettitte

    Cervelli can’t do ANYTHING right

  • Montero21

when was the last time Jeter hit a HR to LF? 2008??

    • Monteroisdinero

He has hit a few changeups to the warning track in left in his last 600 ab’s.

    • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

Didn’t he do it against the White Sox last season? The game where Ozzie Guillen afterwards called Jeter “God”

  • King George

Is anyone fucking luckier than Derek Holland? I mean, geez.

  • MannyGeee

wow, Cervelli got boned on that one

  • Rob

at this point in the season cervelli may have put more balls in the outfield with his arm than with his bat

    • MannyGeee

      this

    • Kostas

Except the last one was a seeing eye grounder up the middle…the throw that is.

did you hear the difference between Nunez’ hit and Pena’s? like a rifle vs a snapping pencil.

    • Cy Pettitte

Nunez is a tank, Ramiro is only a soldier

    • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

      Pena has a noodle bat.

  • MannyGeee

Swisher dancing out of the way of pitches that are not really inside at a ‘Jeterian’ pace.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Damn, why would Girardi bat Swisher leadoff when all he does is get on base against lefties? That moron!

    • aRX

Did I miss an oddball comment? Or are you making fun of yourself?

    • Monteroisdinero

Swish is not my idea of a leadoff batter. Never will be. He has a hit and a walk but not leading off the game.

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

        … really?

  • Kostas

So how bad of a year has Swish had… Before the game tonight he and Posada had the same average…. .227 All other stats are fairly close.

  • Karl Krawfid

If Jeter would have done what Nunez just did, they would have called that a hit.

  • cashman failed

    nova sucks

  • King George

Fun fact: Of the last 32 batters Nova has faced, he has gotten behind the count 24 times.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

      Ooof, really?

  • dkidd

thanks espn. never heard that story about how michael young is such a team player for moving positions

  • Greg

Bruins up 1-0 in the 1st period.

    • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

      That’s really bad news.

      • Greg

It depends. You can also see it as U.S. vs. Canada.

        • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

My hate for Boston sports overrules that.

          • Greg

I have a lot of hate for Boston sports but just in case the Bruins win, we can be be in that mindset.

          • JobaWockeeZ

This. I don’t want to hear about the best sports city for the next 30 years if the Bruins win.

            • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

Thank god for the 2007 Giants. We would have never heard the end of the Pats going 19-0.

They have been the best sports city for the last decade.

wouldn’t it be funny if we won this game?

    • Monteroisdinero

No. It would be a good thing but not funny.

  • Rob

i thought it was 4-4, why did the yes graphic just show 5-4 texas?

    • Jose the Satirist

They are having a rough night on graphics. After Tex’s HR they listed it as his 2nd of the game.

    • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

It showed 3-2 New York after Nunez hit into his DP in the 1st inning.

      • Rob

whoever handles the yes on screen scoreboard is not good at their job, however, it does seem to be better than last year

  • Monteroisdinero

Nova is not pitching great but Texas beat us last year and they have a darn good offense and are healthy.

    /just sayin

  • Jose the Satirist

Cruz is 0 for his last 17. That is rough.

  • Kostas

Man, I just can’t believe the Yankees wasted money on this guy. Never been an Andrew Jones fan.

    • Cy Pettitte

      you take that back now

      Doesn’t change my opinion.

  • Greg

    SAFE!

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Whaaa why is Jones on this team. Greg Golson would have hit a triple.

    • King George

Yeah, seriously. Jones is garbage. Forget Golson, why not just bring up Colin Curtis instead?

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Colin Curtis and his one non-separated shoulder >>> Andruw

  • Mojo

I have to ask . . . Is Beckett actually this good? I counted him out after last season, but apparently he’s found the Holy Grail/Fountain of Youth/Sorcerer’s Stone.

    • dkidd

when his back is healthy, he’s this good

      • JobaWockeeZ

He’s struck out more batters in 2010 and walked LESS in 2010. His HR rate is really really really really lucky right now.

He’s not this good. He’ll fall of the cliff eventually.

    • MannyGeee

Holy Grail/Fountain of Youth/Sorcerer’s Stone + Boston Red Sox = likely PED usage.

      • Mojo

What I’d do to see that unravel . . . I’ve always disliked Beckett and the fruity li’l weedstache he wears below his bottom lip.

      No he’s been lucky.

    andruw stealing signs

  • Karl Krawfid

    That’s too damn bad Yorvit

  • Jetrer

following a guy who never walks drawing a walk you swing at the first pitch over your head. Fuck you cervelli.

  • Cy Pettitte

Cervelli is finally good for something

    • MannyGeee

funny, thats the same exact spot he’s thrown the last 5 balls to 2nd!

  • Greg

    Run scored

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

Even Cervelli’s RBI hits result in outs

    • Greg

  • JobaWockeeZ

Michael Kay loves to fucking think Cervelli is clutch.

  • Chip

    Cervelli lives another day

  • Karl Krawfid

Nunez looked like he didn’t even get tagged.

    Oh well.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Shit. That will keep Cervelli on the roster for another week.

    • MannyGeee

somewhere in Scranton, Monteros infected eye just shed a tear

    • Ivan

I was saying the same thing too.

    • Guest

You know, I normally don’t root against guys on my favorite team.

But, in this instance, I was thinking the exact same thing.

This guy is like the anti-A-Rod/Lebron/Dirk pre-ring: People only seem to remember (MSM and coaches anyway) his good moments of which they are few and conveniently forget his bad moments of which they are many.

  • dkidd

damn cervelli, getting nunez thrown out at 3rd

    where’s montero????????

nunez gets shortstop tips from jeter and base running tips from posada

  • Pastadivingpena

    Noesi please

  • FIPster Doofus

Moreland’s a royal pain in the ass.

    • Rough Around the Edges

      Bitch Moreland…..

  • Cy Pettitte

just noticed Holland has 0 K’s, that impressive, the C- line up not striking out once yet.

  • Greg

    Could Cano have turned that?

  • Guy Montag

Can ESPN just show the game rather than Barry Larkin talking about Jeter who isn’t even playing? And stop showing the Red Sox.

    • FIPster Doofus

Larkin is horrible. I’m glad he left MLB Network, which I watch religiously, for ESPN, which I barely watch.

      • MannyGeee

between him and Nomar babbling, I am losing my shit

McCutchen and Kemp have been better.

      • http://RAB Nuke LaDoosh

McCuthen has been better this year?

        McCuthen

        Grandy
        .282/.353/.615/.968 56R 21 HR 51 RBI 10 SB

Has McCutheon been thaaaat much better in the field?

        • Guest

I managed to misspell his name three times in two different ways. Impressive.

    • MannyGeee

I would say hes a lock for the AL’s best. but McCutchen gets my vote too

      • Pastadivingpena

        Victorino
        Elsbury
        Borne
        Cervelli shines blocking the plate

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Man, that’s the kind of ball that dropped in for a hit for years with all those scrubby center fielders they ran out there. Good stuff, Grandy.

  • Stratman9652

If not for Grandy that would have been pastabarelymovingJones.

  • Guest

Bautista, to my knowledge is a very good defensive rightfielder. And he will definitely put up far superior BA/OPS numbers to Grandy.

If (big if) the season plays out as it has so far, would the fact that Grandy plays a premium defensive position give him a sufficient boost that he could still end up MVP?

    • MannyGeee

plays for the Yankees = not a chance in fucking hell.

you saw how far above and beyond the rest of the league A Rod had to be for him to get his MVPs.

    • JobaWockeeZ

Not even close. The voters don’t really care about premium positions as the main factor. Like Jesus Christ Bautista has a .500 OBP right now. It won’t last but Grandy will not be close at all.

      • Guest

This makes a lot of sense. And I know I would scream bloody murder if Bautista kept this up and DIDN’T win the MVP if it wasn’t for the fact that I *heart* Grandy so much.

  • V

Blegh. My fantasy team has been under .200 5 of the past 7 days (4/31 so far today).

  • Karl Krawfid

Why the hell did Cervelli stand up on that pitch?

  • Guy Montag

2 run lead Ayala not as good as 8 run lead Ayala.

  • Rough Around the Edges

Damn, Nova could’ve done that. C’mon Ayala.

  • Pastadivingpena

    Logan up
    Get your ciggerettes ready.

when will the yankees DL Martin and call up Montero. am getting tired of watching Cervelli start please Jesus come to the rescue.

    • JobaWockeeZ

      They won’t.

    • V

      Nice name change.

  • Crime Dog

Cervelli should be a pinch fistpumper

  • AnthonyNH

Did it look like the runner tried to grab at cervelli’s glove after the tag?

  • StanfordBen

Those were some sweet fist pumps. Good form.

    • Rough Around the Edges

Possibly his best skill by far. He should be a cheerleader.

      • Rough Around the Edges

        I bet he’d have more skills with a pom-pom than a catcher’s glove

  • Stratman9652

I knew that would lead to a Posey reference.

    • Stratman9652

Just as every close hit by pitch in any game will lead to a Jeter reference.

  • Peter Lacock

Montero is still learning to make that play.

    • Stratman9652

I saw him make just as good of a catch and tag Monday night.

      • Peter Lacock

Yeah, that was his first time.

      • Monteroisdinero

but the catch was in the minors and the tag was in the minors so he still sucks on defense.

    Whats better?
The cervelli fist pump or the AJ pie in the face

    • Monteroisdinero

Nice to have a Scranton perspective. Most folks here have never been to a game there. Wynegar and weight room!

  • Rob

i think jeter is the only infielder that hasn’t hit a hr at the stadium this year

    • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

      Cervelli’s technically an infielder

Nunez and Pena going deep. JoVa and Montero crying.

What is going on in this game? Pena, Nunez, Cerv, and Jones doing work.

    • MannyGeee

Way back on the bleacher side of the lower deck in right. I think it landed on the walkway and bounced into the hotdog grill in the food court.

    let’s see some Cory Wade

    • http://twitter.com/urbainshockcor Urban

I’m guessing he’s our starter for tomorrow. Girardi seems to like the idea of Noesi being in the pen for now.

      • Cy Pettitte

thinking of Brian Gordon? Wade is a relief pitcher they brought up today

        • http://twitter.com/urbainshockcor Urban

    Derek who???

  • Cy Pettitte

    Jeter is so getting Pipp’d

    • http://twitter.com/urbainshockcor Urban

  • aRX

    Now he’s just showing off.

Happy for the U.S. Dont really care about Boston.

    • aRX

*sigh* so much success heaped on such a shithole of a city. The obnoxiousness and insufferability of Boston fans goes up once again, and I didn’t even think that was possible.

      • Greg

Meh I really dont mind it as much as the Pats winning or the Red Sox winning. Its NESN National’s attitude about it that gets to me.

  • Karl Krawfid

This speed makes me happy man.

  • Guy Montag

He has more power and he’s faster. Derek Jeter is the next Wally Pipp.

    • Sheepmeister

but nunez is not even in the same universe as lou gehrig though.

    • Pat D

So you were watching MLBN too, eh?

    • Monteroisdinero

And a much better arm that he needs to work on a bit. Oh and he’s 13 years younger and 15M cheaper.

      • http://twitter.com/urbainshockcor Urban

…and he makes at least one error, physical or mental, in just about every game.

I’d start Pena tomorrow at short.

        • Monteroisdinero

          and Nunez at 3rd. ARod-DH

          • http://twitter.com/urbainshockcor Urban

If both are going to start, then I’d stick with Pena at third. As much as an issue as I have with Nunez at short, I have more with him at third. He’s not properly positioned whereever he’s playing.

I know there’s a lefty going, but I’d still start Posada. He’s a better hitter throughout his career as a righty, and he’s hitting better of late, and has looked better batting righthanded, too. I doubt we’ll get lucky two days in a row with Nunez/Pena, which is why’d I’d start Pena. I’ll go with the glove.

            • Monteroisdinero

I’ll go with speed and youth and a guy who can hit a HR and steal second and third in the same game. His 2 hits tonight=Sado’s total for the season against lefties.

              • Urban

Speed and youth is also Pena. He doesn’t have the upside of Nunez, but it’s unlikely he’ll make two errors per game, physical and mental, and Nunez did once again today. Even the seemingly nice play he made at the end was because of his position on the field. Notice how he always seems to be in-between hops, just as he was on that last play? That’s because of where he positions himself.

He needs to play everyday for a second-division club. I don’t know if Nunez if the right guy to be the backup.

I hope I’m wrong and that he starts to play better once he has a couple weeks of consistent playing time. He simply hasn’t been good since he came up last August.

  • JobaWockeeZ

No Kay he’s been better tonight.

  • Monteroisdinero

Nunez steals second and then does the claw and antler to the Ranger dugout.

    would have been awesome.

    • http://twitter.com/urbainshockcor Urban

BTW Do the Rangers still do that? It look so, ummm, less than manly.

      • Monteroisdinero

It would have been nice payback for all the times they did it to us last year.

  • Elnino’sboomstick

Now cervelli will go deep and top off the night.

  • Monteroisdinero

I may be wrong but it didn’t seem to me that Nova threw many changeups. He needs that pitch to be effective. If so, I’ll blame Cervelli.

What’s the deal on this guy? I probably missed the write-up on him when the Yankees picked him up. A quick check of B-R strikes me as he was a victim of Joe Torre arm destruction. Hopefully he’s recovered.

    • JohnnyC

migraines from his concussion last season. he still gets them.

      • Urban

When they mentioned they weren’t starting him this season because of past confussions, I thought it was an easy cover to take a veteran and move him to DH. Yet I thought one value Posada would provide as a DH is he could also start at catcher from time to time. This would be one of those times when he’s hitting well, Martin is injured, and they’re going on the road to the NL where there is no DH.

The fact that he’s not even being considered lends stronger support to the concussion story.

    • Rainbow Connection

      Cervelli, too?

      • Kevin

Cerv is part of the battery.

  • the tenth inning stretch

Man, balls are just flying outta here. The way our hitters are locked in, these upcoming series in NL bandboxes should be fun.

  • Rob

what are the chances we beat them again 12-4 tomorrow?

  • Kevin

Cano just loves to play the game. Love that guy.

  • King George

Dave O’Brien on ESPN: “And Cano helps the Yankees break it open on that home run”

Oh, ok…so on the 5th home run and extending the lead to 8, THAT is when you break the lead open. Glad we got that clarified.

    • King George

I have the option to watch both YES and ESPN…not sure why I went with ESPN tonight.

  • rek4gehrig

    A great line up :-)
Ps. Jeter needs to go on te 60 day DL

    • nsalem

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

  • Monteroisdinero

    Nunez on D baby!!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/cecala Joseph Cecala

Not sure if Jeter would have made that play

  • Avi

Baseball America ranks Dante Bichette Jr as the 15th best prospect in the state of Florida.

  • Kevin

So Hughes is apparently only three starts away from the mlb at least according to Pedro Gomez of ESPN. Doubtful.

    • JohnnyC

Cashman himself said it’d take 5 or 6 starts.

  • Sean C

Why does ESPN seem to hate it when the Yankees hit homeruns? I bet if these assholes could travel back in time they’d bitch about Babe Ruth destroying every other pitch.

    • Greg

Because ESPN hates the Yankees period.

      • Pat D

        Most of them do.

Dave Winfield does not, if you consider him part of ESPN.

        • CMP

Dave Winfield went into the HOF as a Padre which makes him persona non grata in my book.

          • Pat D

            Sigh.

    • Mariano’s Pimp Hand

As an out of market fan I only see the Yanks when they are on one of the national games. It seems that they usually play poorly in those, so tonight was a treat. Gotta leave the sound off though.

  • nsalem

    double digits

  • Urban

    Great game.

Hopefully they keep it rolling tomorrow.

  • Pat D

How dare they hit five home runs and only one double?!?

Blegh. Benched Bourn because I got word at 6:30 that he had the flu and was out of the lineup.

2/3 with 2 SBs doesn’t look like ‘out of the lineup’.

  • nunez fan

ppls hate nunez because hes a latino with black skin.

    • nunez fan

nunez > jeter. his bat makes up for the errors. jeter sucks at offense and defense.

this team is built on hitting GET USED TO IT. this team isnt built on fundamentals like clean defense + pitching. we win games by SLUGGING BALLS OUT. If you still dont get it then you stupid.
