I think I figured out AJ’s problem. He’s used to having time off due to injuries. With the Yanks, he’s been pretty much healthy and hasn’t gotten 2 weeks off here and there. That’s all he needs.
His being healthy is his undoing!

Actually I’ve heard that theory before. I think when AJ first came to the Yankees, the main concern was injury.
The fact that is he is pitching full seasons when he was injured before might have a tiring factor on him.

Normally I’d be thrilled with making Lester throw 43 pitches in the first no matter the outcome.
With Burnett on the mound though, I really wish we could’ve pushed more than 1 across.
I’m sure Burnett is gonna throw his second no-no tonight.
With Burnett on the mound, 5 is not enough. Hopefully after the earthquake and hurricane in the NYC area the past week, Burnett pitching 7 IP/2 ER would be the third act of rarity.
But you know it doesn’t matter how big AJ’s lead is, so maybe keeping it small will keep his head in the game.

Satisfied with that AB. He came up and it sure looked like a deer-in-the-headlight look in his eyes. First high fastball when he couldn’t hold up kind of confirmed this and then two impressive layoffs with 2 strikes, especially the outside pitch. Fought of some and was a great curve from Lester. Good AB.

Watching some video of AJ from his Oakland game, he’s changed quite a few things. He’s slowed down his leg kick and taking a much bigger stride, which is causing him to throw with his whole body and following threw on the pitches, kinda like how Lincecum exaggerates his follow through. He seems to be concentrating on the stride and getting velocity from his hips/legs rather than rushing the stride.
Could you imagine how huge it would be if AJ actually puts it together with these recent changes he made with Rothschild? That would be HUGE, especially if it starts tonight…

When you pop-out as often as Tex, isn’t the solution relatively simple? He needs Kevin Long more than anyone else on this team. Everyone speaks wonders about him… I just want to know if he’s been working or has worked with him already. Obvious problem with Tex, here’s hoping that he fixes it.

It has extra padding because he has had concussions, as well as every other imaginable injury.
There is very little reason to swing at a first pitch off of Lester right now, especially with nobody on base. What did the brilliant hitters just do in that last inning? Exactly that.
It’s unbelievable how bad the approach is from some of these guys. Lester has overpowering stuff, so you may not hit even a hitter’s pitch. His pitch count is elevated, so you can knock him out of the game if you keep working him. Nobody is on base, so swinging at the first pitch might not be that valuable even if you get a single.
Lester did not “pound the zone” in that inning, which would have forced the hitters to be more aggressive. Rather, he took advantage of the over aggressiveness of guys like Martin and Nunez, and let them get themselves out.
44 pitches in the first, and they were lucky that wasn’t just a 6 pitch inning there. Put aside the selfishness and take some pitches.
It’s almost like good pitchers have the ability to rebound and progress as the game goes on…
Right, because Lester made some really tough pitches in that inning? Nunez popping out on a pitch high and away, and Teix getting himself out swinging at a cutter 4 inches off the plate inside?
Don’t make up the narrative to suit the outcome. If a guy gets outs, it’s not always because he’s pitching well. The hitters can help him out by swinging at bad pitches that he didn’t set up that well, or he can get lucky on balls in play.
First of all, Nunez sucks overall. Never expect anything great from him.
Second, pitching is… deceiving. Teixeira swings at pitches like that because he thinks he can hit them, and quite often he does. Then it cuts away last second… because it’s a cutter.
Lester’s a good pitcher, the Yankees are faring pretty well against him. Relax.
Nunez does not suck. He likely isn’t sharp with his swing because of the lack of plate appearances recently.
That at bat had very little to do with whether Nunez is a good or a bad hitter. It was all about the lack of an approach in that situation. He swung at a bad pitch in a spot in which he needed to take 1 or 2 pitches to work the pitch count, and got himself out.
It doesn’t matter who did that. It could have been the April version of Jeter grounding out on the first pitch of the at bat. Either way, it’s something that cannot happen. It’s either a total mental lapse by the hitter, or a selfish attempt to get a base hit at the expense of the team’s overall game plan.
That has everything to do with Nunez. He has no plate discipline, hence why he gets minimal PA’s. For something that “Cannot happen” it seems to happen an awful lot, and no one cares and it doesn’t matter.
It does matter, and a lot of people care.
Nunez may have bought Lester an extra inning in the game. I’m sure that other guys were ticked off to see an at bat like that after all of their hard work in the first inning.
An inning of Lester instead of an inning of a middle relief pitcher can greatly change the flow of a close game like we have tonight.
You are just trying to argue for the sake of arguing. Give it a rest. You know it was a terrible at bat, and one that a Major League hitter has to not have in that situation.
It’s almost like Nunez is a below-average hitter…
Is that all that you have? You keep repeating that, and I keep telling you that it doesn’t change the argument one bit.
Standing there with the bat on your shoulder for at least one pitch in that at bat is not something that only the good hitters can do.
I’m not saying to have him stand there and take 2 pitches right down the middle. Nunez went up there in a situation that called for patience, and instead exhibited total aggressiveness. The mental aspect of the game is something that even a bad player can be aware of in that situation.
Just because I keep repeating doesn’t make it wrong. I keep saying it because you don’t get it: Bad hitters will have bad at-bats, regardless of situation.

Standing there and not swinging the bat is not dependent on skill as a hitter. It’s dependent on situational awareness, which Nunez clearly lacks.
I think the team’s overall game plan first and foremost would be to score runs, which is usually accomplished best by being selectively aggressive, not by being passive for the sake of being passive. I agree Nunez should not have swung at that pitch, but that is the kind of hitter he is. It has nothing to do with mental lapses and everything to do with Nunez being a hacker.
Obviously that is the game plan, but you are facing a tough pitcher like Lester.
You can’t go up there with the mindset of “I will swing at the first pitch I see, and try to hit it hard somewhere.” The first pitch that you see may be a perfect pitch on the corner, with which you can’t do anything.
Selective patience, yes, but what the hitters in that inning exhibited was not that. They swung at tough pitches to hit and helped him out. If Nunez is swinging at the first pitch, it better be near the middle of the plate in that situation.
I’m not saying swing at the first pitch or first strike you see. I’m saying swing at the first strike you think you can handle well, which I thought everyone but Nunez did.
Why do you think you know how to work a pitcher’s count better than the best team in baseball does?
For god sakes, the Yankees forced Lester to throw 56 pitches in 2 innings and you’re complaining about how they can’t work a count.
That is not what I said. Read the post again.
Also, 44 of those 56 pitches came in the first inning. They need to be more patient in that situation. Nunez went up there and popped out on the first pitch, as the number 9 hitter, with nobody on base, and it wasn’t a strike. He has to know the situation there and approach the at bat differently than he would with runners on base.
Nunez was the key failure in that inning, and everyone knows it. He lost track of the situation and bailed the opposing pitcher out.
If Lester throws 44 pitches in the first inning, and 12 pitches in every other inning, he could end up pitching 6 innings. You have to finish the job, and at bats like Nunez’s there cannot happen.
Again, Nunez blows. His blowing is not out-of-the-ordinary. Why are you complaining?

You’re missing the point of the term “pound the zone” though.
When someone says that a pitcher is “pounding the strike zone,” that usually means that they are going right after hitters and laying pitches in there early in the count. Lester has been nibbling around the corners all night. He is throwing strikes, but not hittable ones. In that instance, you need to be patient, because if you swing at pitcher’s pitches you will get yourself out.

As far as where his pitches were overall that inning, almost none of the strikes he threw were on the corners. Of course he’s not going to lay pitches right down the middle, but he was aggressively attacking the zone, as you would expect from a very good pitcher who threw a ton of pitches the inning before.

Brooks Baseball is a nice tool, but it is misleading because it doesn’t show how much room it is giving for borderline pitches in the box.
On Gameday, you can see that the pitch was only a generous strike at best. Not a pitch to be aggressive on early in the count.
I never disagreed with that. I said it was borderline and not a good pitch to hit. But Nunez’ AB was the only AB I had a problem with that inning.

I don’t think I have ever seen a team get as many breaks as they’ve gotten in these recent series against the Yankees. The Yankees have outplayed them almost every night on the field, yet are getting the most horrible luck you could imagine.
Remember the Sunday night game a few weeks ago? 2 runners on, 1 out vs Beckett, and Swisher crushes the ball 415 feet into the triangle in right center for a flyout. The ridiculousness of these games is almost unfathomable.
