Game 71: Dickey
ByBy now everyone is aware of the run R.A. Dickey is on, but the numbers are worth repeating…
Last six starts: 48.2 IP, 21 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 63 K
Opponents are hitting .131/.162/.175 in 168 plate appearances against Dickey during that stretch, which is almost exactly what NL pitchers have hit this season (.131/.165/.166). He’s coming off two straight one-hitters and has been just ridiculous. It’s been fascinating to watch and tonight the Yankees will get a first-hand look at the man who can actually command a knuckleball. Here’s the lineup…
SS Derek Jeter
CF Curtis Granderson
3B Alex Rodriguez
2B Robinson Cano
1B Mark Teixeira
RF Nick Swisher
LF Raul Ibanez
C Chris Stewart
LHP CC Sabathia
I suppose the plan is have Sabathia match zeroes with Dickey so it becomes a bullpen game. Easier said than done, of course. Anyway, first pitch is scheduled for a little after 8pm ET and can be seen on ESPN. Enjoy.
Russell Martin Update: Martin (stiff back) is available as a pinch-hitter and is expected to start behind the plate tomorrow.

Dammit, Francisco is on the DL. So much for effing him up.
I feel like this Dickey hype is just ridiculous. The dude pitched those one hitters against the swing happy Orioles and Rays. I’m not saying he isn’t a good pitcher but I do expect the Yanks to touch him up for at least a couple of runs.
If CC was coming off of 1 hitters against those two teams you’d be celebrating him dominating the toughest division in baseball. We can’t have it both ways, RA Dick’s been great.
Nope actually the opposite. What are you a Met fan? He’s been great but you have to remember that his last 10 starts have been mostly against subpar offenses (BAL,WSH,TB, PIT, MIA, SD, HOU). He hasn’t exactly been facing quality lineups. His numbers are distorted. He’s been facing hack happy lineups.
I don’t hate the Mets, I actually enjoy seeing them do well, it’s good for baseball and the city to have to competitive teams in NY. Also I appreciate good baseball, no matter who’s playing it (outside of Boston that is.) I’m just saying, just because it’s a player on another team doesn’t mean we can respect somebody having an incredible run, and it’s not like he can control his competition, he just has to face it. I just think this is going to be a tougher game than people realize. Dickey’s career against the Yankees: 2.30 ERA and 1.18 WHIP
To those who can watch the game tonight, I rejoice in your good fortune.
Hee. When typing my comment it says it’s June 1481. Last night it was 2050. I feel . . . old.
I think the run streak will end tonight, but the key is how many.
Let’s pound these clowns.
Mike, somebody brought up Vanditte on the FAN earlier today, I know he’s basically a non-prospect…but hypothetically if he made the big leagues how would you update his workload in ‘bullpen workload’ like he might have thrown 20 pitches as a righty, but zero as a lefty so he’d be available as a lefty specialist.
I’d probably just have a row for each, LHP and RHP.
Does Youklis go into the HOF as a Red Sox or White Sox?
You so funny.
False prophet, he was never really that good.
- everyone in New England, as of 4pm today
I’m proud of ESPN for going ahead with this broadcast instead of preempting it for a Youk retrospective.
but they did lower the ESPN flag to half staff.
Tex looked happy…that’s the first time this season I think that I’ve seen him actually smiling, he looked so down earlier in the season…even when we were winning he looked upset about his own performance.
Better title: Tricky Dickey
But he’s not a crook!
Seriously ESPN the game hasn’t even started and you’re driving me nuts
R.A. Dickeys is my mother-in-law’s favorite non-Yankee. He’s my son’s godfather’s favorite player. Hell, I like the guy. This all makes the fact that we’re going to outright bludgeon him tonight all the more sadder.
An impressive start to the bludgeoning by the Captain.
You can’t just bludgeon someone as crafty as Dickey head on. You have to fuck with him a bit at first. The man did climb Mt. Kilemanjaro.
Actual people at a Mets game! This Dickey is a miracle worker indeed.
great sign of things to come..
please hit Dickey hard. I can’t take 3 hours of ESPN Dickey lovefest.
Why not? HE deserves it.
This.
Absolutely deserves it. Great guy. Other than tonight, I hope he doesn’t lose another game all season.
RA Dickey is actually Stuart A.
Then who’s Duh Innings?
They could just call him R.A.D. instead; Cru Jones would approve.
I don’t wanna look at Robbie’s at bats when the time comes.. it’s gonna be brutal
I want no complaining about facing this pitcher. He’s 11-1 with a 2.00 ERA. No “Yankees are awful” crap.
I’m just hoping they don’t go down like chumps. Put up a fight Yanks!
Even if they go down like chumps, I don’t want complaining. the guy’s 11-1 with a 2.00 ERA
With all due respect, Greg, BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
You really think the usual gang of idiots here is going to hold back?
Interleague can’t end soon enough. Why do we play the Mets twice again?
Still think he enjoyed facing hacking lineups?
18 Interleague games is just too many.
Yes. In general I hate change and going out of a routine. I just hate seeing teams that you’re not used to seeing.
There’s going to be just as many next season, but spread throughout the entire season…Which I think will be better. I still think they should do away with the No DH rule in the NL.
They will eventually, this is the first step.
I think NL owners are going to fight AL owners and the players tooth and nail on this one, it’s essentially paying for another player that as of right now they don’t need to pay for.
“I still think they should do away with the No DH rule
in the NL, period.”Fixed it for you.
As I have seen the Mets this season, and it has been pointed out, the Mets are turning into the Yankees and Red Sox style of offense by taking alot of pitches.
No. They are consciously taking pitches hoping that they’re balls. It’s different from having good plate discipline like the Yanks and Red Sox.
They also are fouling off alot of pitches so your reasoning falls flat there.
I think Will just refuses to admit the Mets, or any singular Met, is good in anyway.
CC: most innings pitched (including playoffs) since 2007 w/ a 3.12 ERA and 8.2 Kper9. But he’s clearly not an ace.
Why a fastball in that situation?
Why would you throw someone a strike when you have them 0-2. It’s something I never understood.
Its a game of “You might think I put the poison in this cup…” from the Princess Bride
If the Mets fall out of it. I want Scott Hairston on this team. He is the anti Andruw Jones so far this year
Man, it’s so disappointing that I didn’t get a single nibble on my earlier post. I must be just that old.
Ugh, you could tell that was going to center out right out of Stewart’s hand.
chris stewart, defensive wiz
Cervelli would have done that too.
Terribleness all around there. Poor throw from Stewart, poor set up and trying to get the ball from Cano, no back up from Grandy. Thank god CC bailed them out.
Defensive catcher.
I think my least favorite baseball cliche is “they play the game the right way”. It only seems to be said about teams who oppose the Yankees.
I hope RA Dickey tears his UCL.
I hope you go to hell. That’s an awful thing to say
He doesn’t have one haha
I was about to ask if you were making a joke about that.
Yeah I was.
he has no UCL
I dont care. Its still a bad sentiment
I hope he strains a fallopian tube?
Why do I get the feeling that ESPN won’t break out the K-zone too often with Dickey on the bump
Hey, Robinson put good wood on the ball.
It’s weird how I should look forward to the Subway Series but I end up dreading it because of all the drama and unnecessary importance attached that comes with it every year.
Sterling doesn’t remember that Bernie batted righty against Tim Wakefield quite often.
strike 2 to tex was not a strike
I so want someone to launch a HR off Dickey
RA with the error!
I am not a fan of this whole give Dickey 4 inches on the outside corner to lefties thing. One to Cano and one to tex, he’s hard enough to hit as is
the yankees are finally realizing that they should stay off the knuckleball. let him prove he can throw it for 3 consecutive strikes
I dont think he can do that over the course of an inning. This is why wake usually got destroyed by the yanks
well… this is cool (!)
Robby thomson learned his lesson. He held him
He was gonna score what the hell!?!?
damn, wanted that stupid streak to end…oh well bases loaded 1 out
RAAAAUUULLLL!!!
Bases loaded, let’s GO!
I was hoping Tex can score there.
All right, Yankees. Let’s do this.
Why hold him there?
with Stewart and CC up next and Duda in RF I think they should have sent him
Remember Thursday against the Braves?
so you can have Stewart and CC hitting, obviously
Seriously, if we don’t score this inning, and loose this game I’m blaming Robbie Thompson.
Agreed….take your chances there.
bases loaded for stewart = wasted opportunity
Horrible. Thay will not score.
Okay: I’m watching with sound off. When I saw Tex’s ball headed down the first base line, I looked away for a moment, assuming an out. Can someone tell me how Dickey got an error on the play? It didn’t even look like he’d be involved in it.
And the fail begins
good lord, why the hell do we have chris stewart on this team :/
Man, you gotta send Tex there with Stewart and the pitcher due up.
Remember the BRaves series and how slow he is. He wasn’t going to score on that?
The chances of him scoring on that were higher than the chances of Stewart or CC driving him in.
nvm
Dumb not to force the issue there, the play at the plate would have been close…
Nice hold Robby.
Like I said a little further up, if we loose this game, I put it on Robby Thompson’s shoulder.
damn, what a great play by david wright. I thought CC had a hit there
Have no problem with that hold. Everyone has short term memory.
They forget what happened a few days ago.
Dude, Stewart and Sebathia were comming up. That was just as stupid as it gets. Not to mention giving a late hold to a guy as big as Tex running full speed is looking for an injury.
I remember a few days ago, I assume you’re talking about the play at the plate w/ Swish…but you have Chris Stewart and CC on deck. I understand if you have the heart of the order coming up and 1 away, but with a back up catcher and a pitcher on deck…take a risk.
I’m talking about when Tex was thrown out at home against the Braves and everyone was going off on Robby Thomson. The ball was almost in the exact same position today
Heward’s arm >>> Duda’s arm
The ball was shallow. I saw it and I thought he wouldn’t score on that
Think about it this way – what’s more likely, Duda making a good enough throw to get Tex (which he didn’t do) or Stewart or CC driving him in?
Let’s hear more about how Chris Stewart has proved himself.
And that is why I hate NL baseball.
Who the fuck holds up the runner when he was clearly going to score and the fucking second string catcher and pitcher coming up? That was just flat out awful.
why the hell wouldnt you risk sending the runner when the 2 worst hitters on the yankees are due up
Seriously. Run the fucking catcher over if you have to.
They should’ve had CC hitting 8th…
Oof. You may want to step away from the PC and go make some coffee for the next couple of innings.
This would be about the time Athenian makes his entrance, wouldn’t it?
Should’ve tried the squeeze with Stewart. Bleh. That probably was our only chance to score.
i hate thompson so much
Seriously. It seems like he always sends the runners into an out at the plate but doesn’t send them when there’s a chance.
Gotta send Tex to score there, take your chances and live with the results. I mean for crying out loud, you got Stewart and the pitcher due up.
Where is BonnieClydeHester anyway? Which screen name do we think they changed their name to?
Also bean Wright.
You just really want to hit Wright, huh?
Play for the big inning with light hitting catcher and pitcher due up? Robbie just had a major brain-fart.
Duda is a terrible fielder. Run on him.
People are so forgetful. I dont think he would hacve scored on that anyway. The ball was hit too shallow
Tex scoring on that play is much more likely than Stewart or CC driving him in.
I don’t care. It was the right decision technically.
Technically Robbie Thompson can go fuck himself.
Why dont you tell him that?
If you have the middle of the order coming up, then yes it’s the right move…however if you have two non-hitters coming up and a poor defensive right fielder throwing, and the guy got a good jump (which Tex did) you have to take the risk.
Duda isn’t Heyward. Chavez and Martin were up after Swisher that day. They are much better than Stewart and CC.
The ball was shallow. As soon as I saw the ball hit. I thought he wasn’t going to score on that.
it looked like he would have beat it very easily, he was far down the line, by the time the ball was thrown
Worse yet, it looks like Robbie saw the throw was offline when he finally threw up the stop sign.
Look at big CC sweating. He looks like a co-ed in a contest at Spring Break!
ugh…were do you spring break, so I never go there.
Haha….Del Boca Vista
Lets go CC.
Death by singles.
Listening to Sterling describe a foul ball is much less entertaining than watching paint dry.
CC looks like crap, again.
He’s showing a Phil Hughsian inability to strike people out once he’s got them with two strikes.
You haven’t bothered to look at Phil’s strikeout rate, have you?
I’m clearly joking Mike.
watch RA dickey get a hit and score a run.
Bite your tongue.
I hope he does so that all of you can stop pointing fingers.
CC, c’mon.
Wow, I’m normally watching the game on the radio, reading about you guys going on about how shallow Grandy plays…why was he so stupid deep on Josh Thole?
listening to**
And that is why I love NL baseball.
NL baseball woooooo!
Both pitchers work into AND OUT OF trouble in the second inning.
Here’s the thing though: Look at the throw. Tex would have been dead.
I agree with Thompson there, disappointing as it was.
THANK YOU!
The throw was up the line. Tex was halfway to home. By the time the catcher caught it Tex was by him.
When I looked at the replay, my first thought was “good call, he would have been nailed”.
It was a perfect throw, they had him.
“Hey, is that Cal Ripken up there………wearing a jersey with his own name on it………and what team is that anyway?”
Grandy has to think about running here.
Granderson gotta at least try to steal here right?
What kind of name is R.A. anyways?
It’s like all the other distinction-seeking initials: AJ, BJ, TS, et al. At least it’s not some combination name like J-Lo
Arod is guessing again.
AND IT WORKED
And we broke the 1 hit streak
2 hits through 2.1. We are destroying him.
Double steal here?
Arod got so lucky with that hit
Hey how about running?
Do it Robbie.
RA will be smashed today.
Do it Mark.
oh, no! Bases loaded.
Looked like he caught a break on that check swing call
RIP streak!
Hahaha, you won’t shut us out RA Dick
And the streak is over
I thought he hit that better. I’ll take it though.
yeah, between the swing, ball off the bat, and camera I thought that was at least off the wall
Oh my god a sac fly.
Streak is dead. Orel is thrilled…
Might be the first time ever an ESPN employee was actually happy about something the Yankees did.
No pop-ups, please.
Look at that.
I’ll take it.
streak over… now let’s blow this open, please?
Suzyn bitching about homeruns again.
So glad I’m missing that tonight
GARBAGE TIME
She was actually right in the middle of complaining about the homers when Swisher hit that.
YESSS YAnkees got the first thing out the way.
Swish!!!!!! bomb!
Bandbox.
Too many homers!!!!
SWISHER
Garbage time!
Make it stand, C.C.
Show who the real ace of New York is tonight.
Boom!!!!
SWISHA!!!
BOOOM M’FER!
GT!
NICK FREAKING SWISHER
COMPILER!!!
Yankees up 4-0 Swisher HR
Swish makes his own garbage time.
they should bean swisher because he just hit a homerun off, arguably, the best pitcher in the league.
-every mets fan ever
oh, i forgot to say he was celebrating
They really don’t like Swisher for some reason.
Swish…nothing but net.
AL > NL. Suck it RA.
Sorry I’m late…
But, uhhhh.. Hooray for regression 2 da mean!
It’s always fun when it happens to the opponent.
My god these Umps are blind. That was clearly a foul tip
WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
Raul’s getting a free strike here, I hope he takes advantage.
guess not…
suck dat dickey
Swish cant stop smiling
I love getting up for 5 minutes and coming back to 4 runs.
Dickey sucks. I said it.
and you’re wrong.
Suck that Dickey!!! Swisssh!
Now we need for CC to do his best ace imitation.
That was one of those broke their spirits type of Homer by Swisher….its like the Met fans are in complete stun belief.
Hopefully the Mets players will feel the same and CC can get them
I am going to miss Swisher’s grin.
R.A. is a goofy fucking name.
great inning
This is a perfect example of the whole “you can’t win with homers in the playoffs” fallacy. Great pitchers do not allow extended rallies. When you get a pitch to hit, you have to make it count like Swisher did.
And like he hasn’t in the post season. I still say his staying with the Yanks will depend on his postseason-whether fair or not.
It’s really unfair. The postseason is just too small a sample size to judge anyone’s worth.
Jeter’s last 3 postseasons have featured these OPSs: .571, .709, .572
Anyone can stink in the playoffs, even a great player. And a bad player can also have a great series. Edgar Rentería was a World Series MVP.
Its Ironic that Francona would say “Oh hitting Homeruns doesnt help you in the playoffs” Considering those Red Sox teams he manage were almost exclusively Homerun teams.
Gardy with the elbow brace in the dugout. Agonizingly slow recovery.
Ok CC, time to do your Ace thingy.
CC better not pull that crap he’s been pulling as of late by giving runs back right after the Yankees score.
When has he done this? Not in his last start
jesus christ CC.
Okay, I’m bored now
Call up Cervelli
holy shit keep the fucking ball in front of you at the least.
Fuck this.
Wow, Chris Stewart sucks out loud…
that was 99% on Cano
WRONG
That was on Cano
Although that one was on Cano, but I would hate to ruin the narrative…
ARGH.
would be nice if Cano could catch throws
That one’s on Cano. That’s a great throw
Chris Stewart: Defensive Catcher.
That was on Cano
I take that back, that was absolutely on Cano…he should’ve caught that.
Robinson Cano: Gold Glove Second Basemen
Chris Stewart, defensive specialist.
Wow did we call up Cervelli?
the throw was right through Cano’s legs. That one isn’t on the Catcher
I mean Cano should have caught it, but that was…not a good throw by Stewart.
It was there in plenty of time and right at Cano.
Cano should have been more patient
That error needs to be on Robbie…
shakes head in disgust.
need shutdown inning. he has tons of pitches, but he still usually goes 7, even when he looks like he does today. i hope he does it again
Change that error please.
That was a great throw by Stewart. LOL at that error being on Stewart.
Yeesh
Stewart made another error?!
Apparently following on Gameday isn’t good enough.
Explain the continued existence of Chris Stewart to me.
Chris Stewart has really worn out his welcome. Thanks for those three hits in April, but you fucking suck.
That was on Cano.
The throw didn’t even reach him.
Uh… Yes it did. And it went through his legs.
CC certainly didn’t help himself with the leadoff walk, though.
that was on cano, but your ppoint is still valid
Yeah, at least Cervelli will fist pump and make funny faces between his automatic outs at the plates and launching throws into CF…
Kurt Suzuki please. I’d also kill for Carlos Ruiz but I know the Phils would never trade him.
Yeah, I don’t understand the love he gets here. (I think it’s the hate toward Cervelli, and he’s basically “anyone but Cervelli”)
He has a quick release and can throw out runners, but he has a high pass ball total for the number of innings he plays and sports a sub .600 OPS. For all the grief Martin gets he has an OPS above .700 which is good for a catcher.
I agree. I know Romine isn’t projected to hit that much but man I hope his back gets better soon!
Mike can we get a post on deadline trade targets for a back up catcher on Monday?
And utility 2nd baseman ss?
Yes he does, but in this specific instance, that was a good throw. Cano should’ve caught that.
It bounced in the dirt. Not a good throw.
Yes but it wasn’t a big bounce. A Gold Glover should make that play
it bounced after it went through Cano’s legs
the throw was low, but Cano absolutely should have caught it
It bounced only after it went under Cano’s glove.
After it went through Cano’s legs. If he puts his glove on it, or at least puts his body in front of it, it never hits the dirt.
freakin Stewart
That’s what you get for walking Andres Torres. CC has got to stop walking shitty hitters. If you walk David Wright I’ll be okay but walking Torres is tear your eyes out inexcusable.
That run was like 10% CC’s fault.
Walks fuel rallies.
Yeah, but he would have gotten out of it if Stewart didn’t throw the ball into CF. It was an unearned run, let it go.
That play by Cano pisses me off way more than it should. It was such an easy fucking play.
Everybody stop blaming Stewart. It was on Cano
I only realized this later, after the moron twins in the radio booth went over the videotape.
Chris Stewart kind of sucks.
Check this out, I noticed that Andres Torres was a doppleganger a little while ago:
http://sports.cbsimg.net/image.....223497.jpg
http://www.debbieschlussel.com.....dovina.jpg
Both errors in my opinion should be on Cano, that throw was accurate as you can get. It’s not Stewart’s fault Cano couldn’t grab that ball that everyone knows was accurate.
These are unjustified anger. Give him a chance.
The first one is more on Stewart because the throw was wide.
Iight not bad…
Can we get jeter to cover second the rest of the night
Is it just me, or does CC seem to give up a lot of walks/hits to shitty players?
What are you talking about Andres Torres is a Hall of Famers.
Cc not happy in blowouts rather have nail bitters every game.
Yes. That statement manifested itself last inning when he walked the punchless Andres Torres and got David Wright to softly fly out.
OK ball players, I got an off topic question for you…
I am officially unretiring from the sport this summer (the sport of beer league arch pitch, of course…)
How do I combat “slick glove”? Thought it was a break in issue, but the glove isnt stiff. And balls just POP out of it, like violently pop out…
Use two hands and bring the glove into your body when you catch it.
It’s not a “catching” thing… Literally stood there with 3 gloves taking flys yesterday and only this one gave me any trouble…
Ironically, my first black glove. It’s always given me fits.
Haha that was pretty funny with Swisher and the water bottle.
In a Swisher voice: “Gotta stay loose and cool Bro”
jeter is not liking facing Dickey.
Hey guys: Errors fucking happen.
Just to make that clear.
Making one does not mean you suck defensively.
2 this game has been charged to him, also this isn’t the first time he’s been terrible behind the plate.
He’s apparently a good pitch framer for what it’s worth. Which is the only defense the organization cares about.
Chris Stewart has 5 passed balls and one error (not sure if that’s including or not including tonight). As a backup, that’s horrendous. He also offers zero offensive production. In fact, it’s negative production. It’s tough to complain about a backup catcher, but his bad play makes it a bit easier.
These would be great points if he had actually done anything wrong defensively.
Now that Youkilis is gone, hopefully some long overdue BABIP regression kicks in for Middlebrooks.
With the season boston is having (adding Bucholtz and his bleeding rectum to the mix), I say let them have Middlebrooks as the shining beacon of hope for the new world. Hope and an 80 win season will bee good for me.
This is what I also was thinking…
With a ~25% K rate and a ~5% BB rate, he’s going to have to mash, and I don’t see how he hits better than .270 without the K rate going down (and maybe closer to .260).
Someone mentioned this on Twitter the other day, but Middlebrooks definitely has a little Jeff Francoeur in him. Frenchy came up and hit .300/.336/.549 his first year and everyone dubbed him the next big thing.
Nothing would make me happier.
His BB rates in the minors would suggest a minor detour from Frenchie status, but BB walks don’t always exactly transfer to the majors. I can see it.
cc nowhere to be found there
looks like Teix forgot CC was pitching for a second. had to kick it into another gear to get to the bag, lol.
I’m not quite sure what to make of Turner using “Call Me Maybe” as his batting music…
Even if only one of the throwing E’s by Stew was his fault, man he’s been terrible this year. It’s tough watching him in the lineup once every five days.
He’s hitting better than Cervelli did last year
WHAT???!!!???
Never mind. I was wrong that.
But I thought people wanted Cervelli out last year
We did because he is equally terrible on defense.
People wanted Cervelli to see less time early in the year. He played 43 games, but from my memory he was in often early in the year. And yes, some did want him out completely. But, backup catcher isn’t the most important man on the team obviously. It would be nice to see a bit of an upgrade though
By “better” do you mean “significantly worse”?
Cervelli last year: .266/.324/.395 (.719OPS)
Stewart this year: .254/.267/.307 (.572OPS)
Could you clarify hitting better?
Cervelli had a .719 OPS last year. Stew has a .590 OPS and dropping.
CC is making some of the ABs harder than they have to be.
Oh Nick. Never do that again
Haha, Swisher reminded me of Matsui there for a minute.
Swish is always an adventure in right field.
Confession time guys: I’m switching between this game and “The Lion King”. “Can you Feel the Love Tonight” is on.
I. Am. Not. Ashamed.
You shouldn’t be. No matter your age, race, gender, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, whatever, The Lion King trancends everything and is a great movie.
Did you know though, the opening lines in the movie (Before Circle Of Life roughly translates to “Oh shit, a lion.” “Yeah dude, that’s definitely a lion.”
I’m an absolute Disney fanatic, and I’ve always felt that The Lion King was overrated.
I don’t know why.
I’m pretty sure the “oh shit” and “yeah dude” are roughly translated but yes, I do know that
Shit man, I’m even bringing out the emoticons now.
Haha, I warned it’s a ROUGH translation.
oh god, blue collar player talk.
Major League minimum salary: $480,000.
Not blue collar.
unless of course they grind day in and day out, and facial hair helps too
Also being white and a lousy hitter.
But they have to pay their agents!
“Jeter is a winner that goes out there and grinds everyday. Just like all those Red Sox.”
MUTE BUTTON
He knows how to play baseball.
And if he was shorter we could label him “scrappy”…. sadly he’s too tall to be scrappy.
He’s also only half white, which precludes any scrappiness.
I thought he knew how to play checkers. Glad to have that cleared up.
Did they really say that?
“He’s a winner”
“They grind it out”
“They know how to play the game”
“He loves to play”
“He knows how to win”
ESPN really bringing out the cliches tonight.
Grandy’s grabbing that wrist and wincing…
Do you know what we must do now?
I think the answer may be hit David Wright?
Twice! (And before Collins pulls him)
They hit Granderson. Now we have to respond.
That was Dickey’s FIRST wild pitch this season?
Incredible.
For someone who has seen a shit ton of knucklers in his career, Alex is looking like a chump right now..
RISP success!
“Alex HAS to hit the ball to the right side here”
John Sterling, one pitch before feeble strikeout. No comment after.
Great deek by Hairston, even I was fooled watching it on TV.
Actually Granderson held up well before Hairston threw up his hands, but screw it. Hairston’s blue collar!
Ok, Francona needs to stop referring to any catcher on the Mets as “limp wristing technique”… #nohomo?
Nice get that run back baby.
i know swish hit the hr, but do the yankees ever score a runner from second with a single?
What in God’s name is Tejada thinking there?
These assholes in the ESPN booth are acting like they’ve never seen a fucking knuckleballer before. WHO CARES!? He’s just another half-assed knuckleballer who’s gotten lucky this season.
Dude, he’s actually been quite good since joining the Mets, and honestly what do you expect them to talk about? He’s the only guy in the majors throwing the pitch and he’s been successful doing it, and Cy Young level successful this season.
Yeah, I guess. It’s just boring. And now they’re reminiscing about every other knuckleballer that ever didn’t suck in the history of MLB.
I’m looking forward to some exciting Steve Sparks anecdotes.
what would you like them to be talking about?
How amazing it is that you can order pizza online, of course.
I will kill you. We do not talk about that full(yes, top, bottom, and middle) inning. Ever.
I’d rather hear about Charlie Sheen’s new teevee show.
Teixeira playing baseball the right way tonight. Sac fly, RBI groundout.
Totally. Home runs are for losers, and can’t possibly win playoff series.
Fact: no playoff game has ever been won by a homerun.
They retroactively credited Aaron Boone with a single and Tim Wakefield with a three-base error. True story.
It’s actually been my biggest gripe about the whole RISPFail thing. If you don’t get a hit, fine. But cash in those freebies. Nice to see it happen tonight.
Does anyone else think Schulman is channeling Chandler Bing (Friends) when he calls games?
He JUST randomLY seems to PROnonce certain SYLlables emPHATically.
His key trait is whenever a team is leading big in any sport and the opposing team is beginning to come back, his voice starts to rise.
“And its now a 4 run game!” It rises and its consistent
Jon Miller was the worst (best?) with that.
Miller’s voice would attack and go straight up when a comeback was on.
Schulman’s voice creeps up and creeps up.
Reminds me of “In the Hall of the Mountain King” the musical piece
Adrian BelTRE and Carlos BelTRAN agree.
AUUUGGHHH!!!! hahahahahah
Taco BELLL!!!!!!!!!!
I know this is off-topic, but, wow, real estate agents are real slimy motherfuckers.
Agents in general are slimy mother fuckers.
Yea, my sister and brother-in-law thought they had bought a house earlier today.
Now…it appears they were fucked over.
1-2-3 quick inning here CC.
8-9-1 due up, don’t screw around.
Nice hitting by Dickey. CC gve him a fastball
DP time.
James Shields, David Price, Ervin Santana, Justin Verlander, Johan Santana, RA Dickey.
Pitchers who the Yankees have scored 5+ runs against this year.
good point, not sure ervin santana counts though
and hit huge homers off of.
The Yankees can’t hit good pitching, they all just had an off day.
Mostly homers. Doesn’t count.
Orel Hershiser is a such a smarmy jerk.
It will make you feel better if you see the “Baseball Boogie”. Do you know what that is?
Nope, but it certainly sounds embarrassing.
Sit down you POS
Whenever they talk about knuckleballer’s fingernails, I remember the time that the Red Sox went on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy — which is hilarious in its own right — and they tried to give Wakefield a manicure.
CC might only go 6
And?
According to Mike’s theory of the +1 CC he’s going to finish at least 7
Or maybe less if he doesn’t settle the fuck down.
I’m scared
come on cc get wright
Scott Hairston has been nearly unreliable this series. Sheesh.
*unretirable
Everybody asks! Why aren’t more pitchers throwing knuckleballs?
Gee! I don’t know! How about you explain it to us??
You gotta be fucking kidding me.
Cc being cc
There are 2 runs on the board.
It was probably a bad idea to allow a hit to the pitcher. Just my opinion.
Run was worth it cause Stewart hit Dickey with a haymaker.
It did look like he whaled him in the side of the head, didn’t it?
Payback for the Granderson HBP.
Pretty good throw from Ibanez… if it wasn’t directly in the running lane they actually might have had him.
chris stewart, defensive genius
Stop hating on him. You try and make that play
i’m not paid to make those plays. If I were a professional, then maybe I could. However, that was a good throw and he mistimed the catch. Just stating the facts
looked like Dickey’s head kinda got in the way
File Chris Stewart punching R.A. Dickey in the face under “the DH is a good idea.”
Make a copy and also file it under Freakin Awesome.
Ibanez has a terrible arm.
That was a great throw, it just happened to be right in line with Dickey, making it very hard to see and field.
That throw was incredibly slow
This game is getting very annoying. Taking forever, CC throwing too many pitches, sloppy defense.
And of course, too many homers.
CC has been horrible in these shutdown innings. Giving up a hit to a pitcher is as bad as it gets.
YESSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!
The problem is that we will have to see non Soriano relievers tonight.
there is no bullpen I feel more confident in getting 12 outs if need be. They’ll only need to get 9 at most though.
I’m more confident in this bullpen than any other. I just don’t like bullpens in general.
Probably no Robertson tonight also.
glad to see he got out of it, but cc is not very sharp tonight. i can’t see how he goes more than 6, but hope he proves me wrong
It’s funny because Charlie Sheen hits women.
OMG trade for outfielder already! Watching Ibanez out in left is cringe worthy. David DeJesus please!
If Stewart actually catches that then he’s out.
Yes. But the ball was coming in at the same time as Dickey. It would have been a tough play
told you.
Jeter really grinding out at-bats like a true winner.
Wait that was a replay. Duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Did you think the replay was the live game?
You haven’t insulted me in the game thread so far. Who are you and what did you do with DERP?
i love me some chris stewart
Wow, I know he’s a catcher but Stewart’s gotta run that out.
Not his best game.
Need sanchez to mature faster.
Chris Stewart: three at-bats, five pitches, four outs.
We might see Cervelli as the BUC before the season ends..
Give him some credit… he had the potential to generate 5 outs.
Popping out with the bases loaded and 1 out at least let the Yankees clear the pitcher’s spot!
that would have been funny if he rolled the ball to first base.
File Chris Stewart hitting under – why there should be a DH rule.
Wait Stewart is not a pitcher? Can you DH for the catcher?
SO the plan is to call up O’Brien as soon as he signs, right?
Get off my team Chris Stewart.
Does anyone actually think Charlie Sheen’s new show will be funny? Looks legit awful.
Chris Stewart: Two terrible throws, dropped a play at the plate, and three outs including a double play.
So in other words you want him to die
/overreaction but I dont like hatred
No I want him not on my team.
I don’t want him to die, I’d just prefer him to stop breathing.
J/K,
I’d just prefer that Romine be healthy and Cervelli BUCing.
People still give Charlie Sheen gobs of money for no other reason than that he’s a horrific drug addict and I’m struggling to make ends meet.
We need catchers that can hit. Martin and Stewart are both .190 hitters. Good grief. I wish Gary Sanchez was in AAA but he’s like a million years away.
The “natural rival” stuff is hilariously unfair to the Mets.
Canope
cano, not too sharp with the glove tonight
lazy Dominican
I guess Cano doesn’t feel like catching the fucking ball today.
Not Cano’s best game on D… not even close actually. Horrible fielding so far.
Cano having … difficulties … in the field today
What a lazy fuck.
In al seriousness, he looks just a little too nonchalant out there today.
Robbie makes that play 95% of the time so I’m fine with that error.
This is why Cano is not considered better than Dustin Pedroia
Except for the many people who consider Cano to be better than Pedroia.
Fine. The Media thinks Pedroia’s better than Cano
Here’s an idea, stop listening to the media.
Pedroia and his 91 wRC+?
Except for you know the numbers and all. Damn numbers and their lies.
Girardi needs to sit cano tomorow.
That’s a tough error, but a play you expect Robbie to make.
CC could use a double play in the worst way.
Miguel Batista with the lulz
Cano making errors frequently this year. I think Nunez infected him with butter fingers.
Robbie Cano is not having a very good night, is he now.
Picked a swell time to open up my PC and dust the inside. Dickey can start a new streak next week. This is what happens when you’re not facing a bunch of nuns.
I dont think CC or Cano want to win this game.
ugh
Can we get CC out of the game please.
need someone from the pen quickly. Big guy has nothing yet again
an E-4 and a bloop single this inning
not exactly getting pounded
Dont even bother dude, unless it’s a CG one hit shut out with 15 Ks and no walks CC failed in Hummingbird’s eyes.
11 baserunners in 5.2 innings is no one’s idea of a good start.
Cano should make that play easy… but why is the left side of the infield swung so far over on that?
Girardi really likes to shade hitters to pull…
You guys want to see Wade here instead of CC? I don’t.
Cory Wade is the second to last guy I want to see come out of those bull pen doors tonight.
Seriously. He’s the bullpen version of Ivan Nova, giving up way too many extra base hits.
Death by singles.
1ER for CC, 3 unearned runs (and counting) for Cano.
CC been pretty mediocre today. Really be happy to escape this with no runs.
looking forward to the 3 run jack right here. You get em CC.
C’mon, CC!!!!!!!!!!!! End this inning@!!!!!!!!!!!
4 pitch walk?
To Vinny Rottino???
Ruh-roh.
Stop walking shitty players, you fuck.
i thought cc is supposed to be good this time of year,
Torres cant hit RHP but they will stick with CC.. even if it works it’s a bad decision by Girardi
Joe’s walking the tightrope now
It’s fucking frustrating seeing CC pitching a shitty game like this and knowing how good he can be.
Hooray fucking defense.
When did we stop playing defense???
Fuck this team.
oy
Rothschild must have given him the scouting report for Albert Pujols.
Fucking embarrassing man. Shitty ass defense again.
Wow, talk about terrible luck.
Runner interference?
If Tex had crashed into him, it would have been. Hard to think about doing that real time, but that would have been a heads up play if he did.
Cant blame Joe there. Bad defense again
fucking losers. how many outs does CC have to get this inning?
shitty defense continues
Holy shit, take out CC.
Even I’ve joined that camp now, and I’m almost never in it.
…And thank you Joe.
Cano’s error really fucked that inning up.
so did Joe not taking CC out when he has been garbage for over a month
CC previous 30 days: 4-1 3.16 ERA, 2.41 FIP 9 K/9, 1.95 BB/9
yep, garbage
Dear team,
You actually don’t automatically win the game by scoring off Dickey.
Hard to win a title when the “ace” of the staff is mediocre. My god CC you are a complete crap burger this season.
for giving up ground balls
it’s his fault the Yankees can’t field ground balls?
he was mediocre today, but the defense really shit the bed
http://www.baseball-reference......2&t=p
wait seriously? a crap burger? you’re being serious?
How many outs was he supposed to get this inning? 7?
and of course it didnt work… what a fucking moron of a manager
Are you actively trying for the title of most fucking annoying person here?
nobody is making you read my posts.. if you do read and want to comment, add something to the discussion.. make a good point (if that’s even possible) on why it was the right decision to leave CC
People will say this was bad luck, but CC was pretty fucking bad today.
Yeah lets have your 180 million dollar first basemen slide right past the fucking ball.
Oh and your 10 million dollar 2nd basemen catch the ball when he feels like it.
He allowed a lot of baserunners on his own today.
Yes, but without all of the crappy defense he leaves the Yankees with a 4 run lead.
Unbelievable.
I think we need to bring back Melky just so he can light a fire under Cano’s lazy ass.
i can haz defense?
Looked like Tex could have fielded that ball.
Yeah no shit.
Remember what I said before. No whining please
Most overated pitcher in baseball.
easily a top 10 pitcher in MLB
I’d say top 5, but that’s probably slightly homerish…I’d take Felix, Verlander, Kershaw, Halladay over him…that’s about it.
Most under-educated fan.
at least we get to face their pen now, but damn what a gigantic waste that was by cc and the defense. i don’t trust wade at all here either
CC was bad and the fielding was horrible. Tex needs to make that play aND THE great cano is on siesta. but hey give him a 5 year extension…..
just once, offer a better, available alternative to what they have
or just get rid of everybody on the team and replace them with nobody?
Wow, you didn’t blame Arod.
It’s been a really sloppy game, huh.
Of course CC pitches a shitty game the night we manage to score 5 runs off of RA Dickey.
Ahhh, the trolls have arrived. It just wouldn’t be a game where the Yankees aren’t blowing out the other team without trolls. Feels like home.
Dam, he’s gotta make that play!!
Do it, Wade!!
I think I would rather have Eppley here.
Totally predictable. Wade has been coming back to Earth for some time now.
cc can’t get minors leaguers out, what a joke. the defense is a bigger joke
I’m sorry but that’s a routine ground ball to first base, Tex has to put that in his back pocket.
Two run effing error.
He has to get this guy. Can’t let Wright bat.
Wade sucks.
Fuck Wade. Someone take him behind the shed.
And Corey Wade just sucks.
CC needs to skip a start.
Great way tonfuck this up
so can dickey get the win here?
Yes, if they take the lead this inning (even though he is out of the game)
Ok. Who are these people in the right side of the infield and what have they done to Robinson Cano and Mark Teixera?
Damn, Cano should have 3 errors right now(those 2 on stewart are on robby’s hands) and Tex, I mean, I just don’t know what the heck he was doing on that one.
CC was not doing good at all, but his defense was not helping whatsoever.
Cory Wade will be off this team soon, methinks. This is fucking inexcusable.
Ugh
Over/Under: 30 seconds before ESPN points out that the Mets don’t need homeruns to plate RISP.
a team that gets hits with 2 outs and RISp, what a shock..
gave away the game. .CC got hit all over the yard……
Well…this is what happens when you build up a pitcher duel…
how many unearned runs and runs with 2 outs are we going to give them.
wade is back to sucking it up
Hope Cory Wade enjoys the minors.
Who is taking his place?
Aardsma, and then we have Freddy for long relief?
I feel like some people are too hard on guys. No bullpen is going to have everyone great every time. Wade is having a few hiccups lately, but I don’t think it’s overall indicative of him as a pitcher on the whole.
Aardsma
Agree with all of that, however I still think Wade goes down. I’m fairly certain that Wade has an option left. So in order to keep depth, he’d go down in a few weeks when Aardsma’s up
Honestly though, in terms of how they have pitched this year, Wade deserves to be here more than Garcia.
You can’t expect perfection from him. Even Mo has blown games. Overall he is having another pretty good year, just some mistakes lately. Freddy is pretty bad and we only use him as a last resort. Might as well designate him I think.
It will probably be Eppley or Wade since they have options. Eppley is actually getting guys out lately. Pretty sure Freddy is staying.
Freddy is here to stay it appears. I’d rather have Freddy in the role of not pitching for days/weeks at a time than Phelps/ another pitcher in the org who has a future. Girardi always has a designated long man, so I’m ok with it being Sweaty Freddy.
On the other hand, it’ll be mid-late July when Aardsma comes back. So Wade or whoever goes down will be back up Sept. 1
Cory Wade was definitely the wrong guy to pitch in this situation.
wow.
Always a bad sign when the 3-0 “get me over” fastball misses the target.
if the yankees had the mets luck with 2 outs and RISP they would never lose a game
Damn, ESPN might as well have a cliche machine spouting off phrases…that would be about the same as the broadcast booth right now…the Mets “find ways to win”.
How about those clowns in Washington? What a bunch of clowns.
The Mets are “just having fun out there”…”it’s not that easy to get back into a game like this”.
I wonder if they would have said that about the Yankees comeback yesterday?
…Nah, they wouldn’t have. The Mets played scrappy basrball and found ways to score with two outs against the Evil Empire. The Yankees just hit home runs, which makes them far less scrappy.
“Well we had confidence in CCeey there, then Texy couldn’t get to it. Wadey came in to a tight spot. I thought emptying the bullpen & bench doing double switches could get us back into it, but I was wrongy.”
Sounds more like a Scioscia postgame.
cano had 3 errors agains the mets years ago on a weekend game….
cano and arod killing the yanks all season long….
Are you related to Hummingbird?
Give a guy a 4 run lead and he gives the game away now wade about to suck out the life of this win
Fuck you Wade. Fuck you hard.
This is about to get really ugly.
Tex: Hey Wade, want to f*ck this game up?
Wade: Sure…you get it close and I’ll do it in!
Tex: OK. Ssshhh…CC is coming.
CC: What?
Tex & Wade: Nothing *kekeke*
Idiots.
GET AN OUT!
Girardi with managerial malpractice this inning. Just dreadful.
How in the world did they not have Rapada ready for this?
Could Joe not foresee a pinch hitter?
Everyone in the AL East except the Jays won today.
The AL East is all well above .500. It’s pretty cool.
Best Division in baseball…even the worst teams in the division (Baltimore and Toronto) will both be over .500 at the end of the season.
The only positive part of this game: 5 runs off of Dickey…everything else has been terrible.
How is it that Rapada or Logan are not in for this AB?
lousy inning..
Tex Cano and Wade really fucked up.
Wade? Really? sure he allowed a hit, but what about CC?
he gave up a bloop single and 2 ground balls that weren’t fielded
(the walk was bad though)
After all that drama, you’ve still gotta feel pretty good about the Yankees chances of winning this battle of the bullpens.
YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!
But seriously, how is Wade the fucking guy that comes in in such a massively high leverage situation?
Bottom line CC pitched like shit!
1 earned run.
Aardsma and joba will be very welcome pieces to this pen
Garcia and wade can go
People are getting on CC and Wade, but only 1 of the Mets 5 runs is earned. This is on the fucking defense.
Defense was just awful, but CC didn’t do anything to help himself out.
CC wasn’t sharp but he allowed a lot of bloops and groundball singles, and again, the defense was awful.
True, but you have to figure he’d gotten out of a few jams and kept the pitch count much lower. I could have seen this easily been another grinded-out performance for him.
this should have been an easy win with a 4-0 lead. cc was a huge dissapoint, ment, not to mention our entire defense. good news is it’s a 3 inning game, and we have a better pen. and wade, who i hate to see on the mound, is hopefully done
Can we switch hitting coaches with Mets? Because if he can make AAA guys and journeymen look this good, imagine what could do with Cano and our other chokers.
#halfjoking
Jeter getting dangerously close to a sub .300 average…
Six more hitless at-bats and he’ll be there.
Send Jeter down!!!!!
Jeter is fucking stupid for not getting hit. He has a pad and we need baserunners.
Going back into negative mode now.
I didn’t expect us to win the game so its okay.
Maybe we could all settle on a secret word or something we could use when you get this way to snap you out of it.
Starting to worry about the Red Sox again and their ability to hit so much.
I’m pretty pissed about them not being out more games. Only five back. Disappointing.
Are you being sarcastic or real?
They should be 10 out with the way their pitching staff works
They play in fenway and have beaten all crappy teams. They haven’t done dick against good teams. Not sure why you are afraid of a team that can barely stay above .500. 2004 was fucking 8 years ago. Get over it already.
Dont give me that. They have a losing record in Fenway. 19-20
Reason the whole “more stratigic national league” is bullshit, former manager of both an AL and NL team, Tito just said it’s “easier” in the NL because the game makes the decision for you.
For the billionth time tonight: shut up Orel.
They CAN’T shut up. They’re paid a lot of dough and have to justify it with this constant jabbering.
Why the heck is with holding runners all the time? First, they were holding DICKEY. Then they have Tex guarding against a TWO OUT, BASES LOADED bunt. How many times do you see a bunt that situation? So they go back to holding the runner only to have what seemed a ground ball out go past Tex. The defense can’t bail you out if you are playing them in the wrong position. C’mon Joe, stop doing this.
I’m kinda glad Eppley didn’t come in. Given the defense tonight, not sure I would have wanted a grounder there.
Fastball down the middle and A-Rod with his all arms swing grounds out.
I am so glad the Yanks don’t have a mascot.
And well you should be glad! Having a mascot is a guarantee of a rube ownership.
The Mets only have one good reliever so we should score at some point.
What 5,6 more years of this crap ass Arod? Horrible contract.
If we lose tonight I’m not going on sports sites, watching ESPN, or reading any sports papers for a couple of days only to avoid the inferiority complex fueled rantings of Mets fans/media claiming that the Mets are a better team than the Yanks. I hate Interleague and I hate the Subway Series.
arod cannot get the ball into the outfield more then 20% of the time. he is awful..
the good news is we get to watch this sack of —- for 5 more years and listen to the sheep tell us how great he is instead of how great he was….
this if it occurs will be a awful loss… terrible fielding and the yanks had there usual 1 big bang and then horrible AB after horrible AB……
girardi did not have the lefty up did he not have a lineup to look at?? he has done that twice recently.. girardi thinks wade is better then he is.. robertson throwing his usual 25 pitch per inning routine yesterday affects them today….. he needs to be more efficient else his value is reduced a lot….
Glad to see you’re keeping it fresh with more A-Rod talks, stu.
Also glad to see the lack of a viable replacement for him.
How come he’s not banned? I get that some people are frustrated, but he says this same shit every single game and it adds absolutely nothing to the conversation.
You have the ability to change this.
I’d rather the Yankees make a settlement, release him, or do what the Angels are doing with Vernon Wells and bench that unproductive motherfucker. I’d rather eat the money than deal with his shitty offense/defense.
He’s been above average offensively, and about average defensively
Vernon Wells gets benched because they Angels have better options to play (and he’s worse than ARod)
What better option do the Yankees have?
You have a problem understanding baseball.
Somehow this game is D-Rob’s fault?
I feel as though we never see you around when the Yankees are winning.
You’ve got some nerve calling such a great player a foul name like that. If you’re going to call people sacks of shit, you ought to at least first show you can write the English language with some intelligence.
Sell your computer already.
Seriously, everybody complaining about how horrid CC was tonight…give me one example of a ball that was actually driven with any sort of authority against him tonight. Was he great? No, he gave up some dinks and dunks, but the defense behind him is the reason we’re looking at a tied game right now…especially the combination of Stewart and Robbie Cano.
He only had three strikeouts. You’re gonna get a lot of those hits if you allow the ball to be put in play so often.
sure, and if the defense did it’s job he would have been able to pitch around those cheap singles. CC wasn’t sharp, and he gave up a lot of baserunners, but if the defense makes plays they normally do, he likely would have gone at least 6 innings and given up only 1 run.
Yeah. He wasn’t amazing, but he wasn’t bad either. Not gonna smack CC around for this start really.
He had no command of his fastball and his off speed stuff was flat.
Wow, good job answering my question.
A quick inning would be nice here…
Bring up pena so cano can be pulled in games when he gets lazy.
Boone Logan: Most consistent Yankee this year.
Christ the IQ of this board is just falling…
Seconded. I really enjoy some of the people around here who know what’s going on. Even genuinely enjoy disagreeing with them on some issues if valid points are brought up. On the other hand, sheesh there’s some bad posts.
Bottom line:
I;m a Jets fan and they never win.
I’m a Devils fan by state and they lost
I was a Nets fan by state and they sucked
I need the Yankees to win to feel good about myself when it comes to my horses/chosen teams.
I’m a Bills fan. I win.
Actually not talking about you at all Greg. You’ve gone from mild annoyance to relatively cool guy in my eyes…I’m talking about the people that appear bash the team, using dreadful grammar, hyperbole and emotion. Then vanish when their opinions are challenged.
Oh God. Garcia? WTF?
Freddy Garcia warming?
As the announcers have said, which is a good point, going into later innings tied should give us the advantage with our bullpen.
So I’m hoping we can do some damage against their high ERA bullpen and ours holds it down.
2 quick notes.
Garcia warming up??
That annoying song is Turner’s walkup song? Wow…
I’m hoping it’s for his daughter or something…cause just…ugh
so Rapada, Soriano and Garcia available to get us through this game? oh god.
Garcia up means girardi has raised the white flag
Garcia=Mitre/guiden
Well, if the Yankees score in the T8 and Robertson doesn’t come in, you know something is up.
thank god they aren’t at yankee stadium
Anyone else pulling for Logan for another inning?
Ack! It’s Schrödinger-esque! All I did was peek at GameDay and the Yankees collapsed. I shall not look again. Better indeterminacy than a loss.
I can’t wait for the Mets to finish 3rd or 4th in the NL East and we’ll all be like “Remember when the Mets thought they were contenders and that RA Dickey should win the CY Young? Good times”.
Let’s score some fucking runs NOW!
This game + trying to apply for unemployment benefits and seeing that information that was given to us by people from unemployment doesn’t match the application + my sister getting fucked over when trying to buy a house =
I’M READY TO KILL SOMEONE
Make up call
Next time CC is showing signs of having a big bad inning we should put Boone or D-Rob in there. #firemen
OH MY GOODNESS
DAMN! that was a BOMB!
Now work on catching the ball Cano.
Hey guys, the 2nd basemen with an OPS of .900+ hit a homer
BOOM!
Cano making up for his earlier misplay.
Well Cano’s now only -3 in terms of runs…
Robbie trying to make up for the shoddy defense
Cano’s lazy! Send him down!
dontchaknow ?
cano!!!!
AWW Robbie…I can’t stay mad at your suave ass.
I like that Cano better than the error making Cano.
Hey guys, Cano sucks and isn’t clutch.
But he can do that which saves his ass.
Terry Collins: “They’re not gonna be able to beat us with homers here”
I love it when people attribute the Yankee’s home runs to YSIII – and then they go out to huge NL parks and hit home runs there, too.
I hate when fucking managers say that. I remember when Joe Mauer said that about Target Field before the 2010 ALDS and BOOM! Berkman and Teixeira homeruns!
Mauer must be so sad that he’s like the only person with power in the AL to not go yard at Target Field yet.
Robbie just made up for his brain farts
So, I kinda made a post after Swisher homered, and then I succumbed to my fatigue after not having slept in 36 hours.
I saw my post did not come to fruition.
Fuck that. I’ll say it again – let this lead stand, Yankees.
That was the laziest fucking home run I have ever seen.
It actually didn’t count. Oh, wait…
You’re all going to think I’m nuts, but I have a reverse-voodoo Cano idol in my apartment. And it always gets moved by someone. Each of the last 4 times I found it and put it on its perch, Cano went yard in the next at-bat.
Someone = either my cleaning lady or my dog.
Met fans are trying to drown out “Let’s go Yankees” chants not with boos but with “Yankees suck”
Stay classy, Met fans. Stay classy.
Meh. What are you going to expect them to do?
Getting it in the apple hole is what, 50 points? 100?
Wasn’t ARod’s in there the other night?
Yep, and to your other post…yeah still kind of mad at robbie as well…and I guess cause he threw about 30 pitches yesterday and is still working himself back from the DL?
Well if Robertson’s not available, who’s due up for the Mets? can we mix and match with Logan, Rapada, and Eppley?
I’m still pissed at you, Cano.
Um, why is DRob not available suddenly?
he went close to 30 pitches last night and Girardi still wants to baby him to prevent another oblique injury
giradi has come a long way with drob, remeber the dry hump counter last year??
gotta love that Mets bullpen…its amazin!!!!!
What was that?
funny to see all the players are so caught up with whats going on in the stands.
Can someone send the ESPN booth my comment from earlier? The Yankees are perfectly capable of beating good pitchers with homers.
Everyone also seems to forget how much the fucking Rangers rely on the home run, and how many they’ve hit the last few postseasons.
What’s even funnier is they lost in the playoffs against a couple of solo HR’s that stood up.
Good two nights for Ibanez.
Robertson you sneaky bastard.
What was going on there? Read above that he might have been unavailable.
Have TV volume turned down low. I figure I could get about the same level of intelligent commentary from your average RAB troll.
They flashed him warming up in the ‘pen after people here and the booth spoke about how he probably wasn’t available.
Ah. Muchas gracias, senor. You earned your Rocky Road with that.
ROBERTSON IS UP
Annnnnnd breathe.
Dude, your handle is making me want Breyer’s Rocky Road ice cream so badly.
Heh. You remember the game where Swish made on bad play in RF and one great catch (this was in ’09)? After the game Kim Jones asked him about it, and he said his defense was like “Rocky Road”. Jones responded that he got some “Rocky Road Redemption”. Hency my handle, a tip of the cap to one of my favorite Yankees, Nick Swisher.
I approve.
Somebody should tell Francona and who ever in that booth that the Texas Rangers are back to back AL champs not because of manufacturing runs.
The antlers say hi
Shoot them! Kill them!!!!
Is Wise a good basestealer? I haven’t seen him run much, and this was as good a time as any to steal 2nd.
He has the best instincts of any non-starter, yes. Perhaps best on the team as well. But definitely best on the bench.
I guess best on the team would be either Jeter or A-Rod….which isn’t saying a whole lot.
Plus, Girardi has said that he has the green light.
Cool. Idk why I wasnt sure if he was a good basestealer. I knew he could fly and has a good glove
chris stewart is quite the grinder
he still sucks though
All is forgiven if you gap one Stewart
Gotta love these announcers and their “Yanks will have trouble hitting in the playoffs” logic.
Mike said it best above-teams that have to score runs by stringing together rallies, like the Mets, will have a harder time in the playoffs because the good pitchers aren’t going to allow long, extended rallies.
The homer-happy Yankees, by contrast, have a better shot at scoring runs because they only need one mistake from the pitcher, and not luck/an extended series of mistakes, to score a run. And they have lots of players capable of taking advantage of that mistake.
I’d take our offense over a “grinder” offense any day of the week and twice on playoff game days.
at this point I’m happy they stopped talkin about the damn Knuckleball and RA Dickey
But when they can do both, they are unbeatable.
In 2009, they had guys like Jerry Hairston Jr. who can get productive outs
I fucking love the junior Hairston.
Well of course it would be awesome if they could do both. But I’m not going to complain about the offense if it keeps up this homer rate. Beggars can’t be choosers, and if I had to pick one way to get runs, this would be the way.
But you know what, every team has that one or 2 guys who can steal a base or play that “small ball” stuff. Fact is teams like the 04 and 07 Red sox won championships because they out slugged people. Same with the 09 Yankees. Well that and terrific pitching.
…and have that guy who you remember for that one play, or that one hit. I still remember DeWayne Wise in highlight reels as a Marlin, yet here he is and there’s not a ton to him.
That hasn’t exactly worked too well the last 2 years though.
In 2010 they made it to the ALCS. That’s pretty good.
They’re not going to win the WS every year. Sometimes their offense will be cold whether they hit homers or grind out runs. I’ll still take my homer-happy team, thanks.
Homers are great but to be so dependent on them to score runs is not ideal. You need to be able to score some cheap runs with speed and timely hitting/productive outs too.
It would be nice if they could do that, yeah. But like I said, beggars can’t be choosers.
No, it’s not ideal. But it’s pretty fucking good.
Lets Go Robertson.
“I’m surprised they aren’t holding them on with the count full, if they get one in the gap it’s a run”
Someone should have pointed out to Terry Francona that Chris Stewart was up (who’s now sporting a sub .300 SLG… that’s pretty impressive!)
seriously Logan is freakin dangerous…watch out lefties
Good job Logan.
37K in 27.2IP for Boone now
Boone Logan and Cody Eppley are currently my favorite Yankees. They come in, do their job much more effectively and consistently than their contemporaries, and leave. They get almost no credit for how great they’ve bee.
Add Chavez to that list. Hard not to root for him considering all he goes through just to be ready to play.
I’m starting to think that stuart a is some kind of entity who feeds off the negative vibes and comments of the internet.
Since he conveniently disappeared again once Cano homered.
Things got so bad we even got a Teddy appearance tonight. You don’t get those on just any bad stretch.
Don’t walk anybody Robertson.
That’s like telling Tex to not pull the ball, or Robbie to not swing at anything that threatens the strike zone, it’s unfortunately part of their overall great game.
I won’t be able to watch if he does another Houdini routine.
Hope Robbie has his control, limits his pitches, and get these guys out.
Stewart didn’t have a chance there
seriously Stewart why bother
Another throw right on the money from Stew.
He wouldn’t have gotten him anyway. too good a jump
likely true, but it’s not good that a defense first catcher continues to make poor throws
Send him down and have him learn a knuckleball.
please dfa stewart asap, you can’t get more useless than him. that wasn’t even close
Jesus Christ if I was facing the Yankees I would run all over them…like everybody but the Molina brothers, Posada, and Tex would be sent.
Here we go.
they cant make it easy on the fans..
No more two out shit for the Mets.
I’ve seen way too much of that.
A balk??
the mets have the ability to manufacture runs, not saying they are better than the yanks, but that is not something the yankees can do
especially without gardner
If the Mets and Yankees combined, they would win every game
You’re right (well exaggerated, but I get what you mean and agree).
BUT, with that said, given the choice between the two offense, I’d take the Yankees’.
Not to be a dick, but hitting a home run is manufacturing a run. It’s actually the best way to manufacture a run.
If Tejada gets on. I walk Wright
and…breath…
I know in the rulebook that’s a balk. But, man, that’s such a ticky-tack rule. It does not trick or do anything to anyone really.
ex-hale!
YESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!
What was the balk? I was busy freshening my cocktail.
DRob likes to make it interesting so he can get on SportsCenter top 10, he’s really better than this
It’s also why Soriano is the better choice for a closer.
Could have done without the balk, but thank you, David Robertson.
I thought Stewart was here because of his great defense?
That throw was way off, regardless of whether it would have been in time.
Our catchers need an upgrade bad. Our starter is hitting sub .200, our backup for defense isn’t that good at either.
Mike Napoli please?
pass
HAHAHAHAHAHA
April 2012 called. They want their meme back.
He’s not a good pitch framer.
Someone explain to me why Stewart is on the big league roster instead of Cervelli?
I guess you weren’t here last year when people wanted Cervelli gone
I get the sentiment, but I’m not really seeing Cervelli doing much better.
At least he’s younger, cheaper and sometimes steals a base or 2. Stewart is just useless.
I don’t understand how people can complain about one light-hitting catcher versus another. They’re interchangeably mediocre hitters.
Chris Stewart:http://www.baseball-reference......ch01.shtml
Fransisco Cervelli: http://www.baseball-reference......fr01.shtml
Offensively, Cervelli>>>>Stewart.
Stewart is not a mediocre hitter.
Because when he was traded to us for Kantos he was billed as a defensive catcher (which Girardi sees himself in and loves) so when Romine hurt his back Cervelli was sent down to start for AAA because it was thought his bat everyday in the AAA line up would be better than Stewart’s and that Stewart would be just fine as a BUC in the Show.
….and then Cervelli did not to re-insert himself into the conversation.
This is not a ringing endorsement of Chris Stewart, but this team has carried far worse than him as a backup catcher. Please, oh god, please do not make me type the name Kelly Stinnett. Fuck, I just did.
Not only is Wil Nieves still in baseball, but he also hit a homerun yesterday. In the big leagues!
Fringy backup catchers are like fringy LOOGies in their hanging-out ability.
Nieves was god-awful for the Yanks as well, although I gave him about a 0.1% chance of putting a ball in play versus none at all for Stinnett.
“hanging-on”
tl;dr: Romine hurt, Stewart’s glove “doubleplus good,” Cervelli’s bat>>Stewart, Cervelli replace hurt Romine, Stewart replaced Cervelli.
I’m mostly annoying they traded a potentially useful bullpen arm for a downgrade at backup catcher.
Were you saying this last year when people wanted Cervelli gone?
No, but I don’t see what that has to do with anything.
I was at the time the trade happened as well, only because I thought Kontos would be getting the opportunity that Eppley’s been getting after years of reading about him here. In the end, though, one of you three said it – fringe relief guy. Within seconds, the team claimed someone else’s version of that in Eppley, and that’s worked out well.
Stewart should absolutely be there to rest Martin, but enough of this “not personal catcher, yet there is he is” stuff.
Exactly. How they thought Stewart was an upgrade over Cervelli, as weak as he may be, is beyond me.
Forget Cervelli, they had Craig Tatum and Gus Molina already in the organization!
Seriously, Stewart made a good throw earlier that Cano fucked up.
I want Stewart gone. He’s a liability. But his defense really hasn’t been horrible this game.
He does have 5 pass balls (which is a lot given his playing time).
He’s certainly not bad behind the plate, but the way he hits he needs to be playing tremendous defense to justify it.
I was referring only to this game. Overall, I agree.
I don’t like that David Wright bats next inning.
The worst he could do is tie it, assuming they don’t add an insurance run or five.
Houdini
Francona pointed something interesting out… once again with a man on 2nd, Girardi has someone almost standing on top of 2nd base (Cano if it’s a righty, Jeter if it’s a lefty) and said with 2 out he should be playing back so he has a better chance of at least knocking down a groundball.
He needs to stop with these mindless shifts and pretennding he’s Joe Maddon…. on the error that Cano made that set up the 3 unearned runs Cano was swung way the heck over (though this was with noone on) for that notorious dead pull hitter…. Justin Turner?
Is this fkkin ump going to give every pitch 6 inches off the plate to Parnell?
CC got a few of those calls, too.
1 more insurance run would be nice
MFKIY 1-2-3, I’m calling it right now.
I’m with ya.
Ok, I give up. Been trying to figure it out for a year. I know MF, I know Y. What does the whole acronym stand for?
Mother Fucker I’ll Kill You. He some how got the nick name in Tampa…I think it’s got something to do with his angsty stare.
Nevermind. I got it.
Soriano is not an ace but all he needs is three outs.
Ok Soriano, Do ya thing.
CLOSE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can’t wait to see the shoebox strikezone this Ump gigivgves Wright so he can have a 3-0 count.
That pitch was a strike to Chavez! TWICE!
I hope that rain reaches here. Forgot to water the grass.
LMAO at the fat fuck with the David Wright black shirt.
Nervous already!
phil hughes ladies and gentleman, clutch by soriano!!!
Sit your ass down Wright.
Gotta get Wright.
sit down wright
Fuck yeah!!!!
Nice pitch Sori! (got away with the 2 pitches before that)
Finally!
Past Wright!
SIT DOWN WRIGHT
Cano
that was laziest catch ever
Lazy Cano!!!!!!
1 more to go.
One to go, gotta get Dudda.
Damnit MFIKY…soo close.
alright… we can do this….
Bring in Rapada!
end it already
Hate the no doubles defense, Tex would have been right there.
I miss Mo.
Nice win.
5-1 against the stupid Mets. I will take it.
i thought that was a gapper.
YEAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And there’s two of three in Queens.
Well done.
Worst win ever. But a win’s a win.
!
Yes!!!
And….. untuck…..
Yankees win Bitches!!!!
Sloppy as shit, but yay we won.
They don’t have to be pretty. All they have to be is wins.
I hope RA Dickey doesn’t give up another run the rest of the regular season.
The team with 2 homers beats the team with 12 singles.
5-1 baby. Kings of the City.
Fuck off, Mets and Mets fans.
Can’t wait for them to whine at Francesa tomorrow.
and this time they can’t call in and complain about YSIII being a bandbox like they did after the sweep.
wonder what the excuse will be this time.
The new dimensions.
WFAN will be like Candyland for Yankees fans tomorrow. Just soak it in. To say nothing of SNY.
This win was sloppy as Hell, but it felt great.
Rivera is my favorite Yankee of all time but Mo would have had to be completely on his game to have the numbers Soriano has had since closing for the Yanks, that’s how good Soriano has been. What started out looking like a bad free agent signing now looks like a good one. I hope he doesn’t opt out of the last year of his contract at the end of the season which is his right to do. Who would have believed that at any time last year.
Yeah, well Mo was never on his game.
It’s still a bad signing.
Let’s hope the Yanks don’t do something similar with Vidal Nuno. That guy seems to be an under-the-radar, legit prospect.
He’s 24 which makes him a bit old
Just a question.
Why hasn’t Pat Venditte been given a shot in the majors this year?
He’s doing very well in AAA. 1-1 with a 2.77 ERA
Maybe the Yankees don’t put as much stock in an ERA over a 13 innings span as you seem to do?
