Game 152: End of the Homestand
ByThe final true homestand of the season ends today, a homestand that has featured a lot of wins including the last two walk-off jobs. After losing four straight in Oakland earlier this season — including two on walk-offs — I feel pretty good about how things have gone. The Orioles are still only one game back because they’re winning a ton as well, so sole possession of first place is still on the line. Here’s the starting nine…
DH Derek Jeter
RF Ichiro Suzuki
3B Alex Rodriguez
2B Robinson Cano
1B Nick Swisher
CF Curtis Granderson
C Russell Martin
RF Raul Ibanez
SS Eduardo Nunez
RHP Hiroki Kuroda
First pitch is scheduled for 1:05pm ET and can be seen on YES locally and TBS nationally. Enjoy.

End of the homestand? Yankees end their season at home with Red Sox.
Multiple series’.
No clue why I ‘ there.
Have you been drinking, Joe?
No…
No bangers lately.
Right. I keep forgetting that you can’t buy booze yet
Jerk.
Hey everybody!! Let’s laugh at Joe because he’s young!!
j/k man. I’m just used to being the youngest person in any given group, every group of friends I’ve had through out my life I have always been the youngest.
I was in that group too. About half my friends in high school were a year older, and even among my own class, I have a late birthday, so everyone got to drive, drink legally, etc. before me.
Being able to buy alcohol isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
I’m pretty much a teetotaler. I know too many people who have fucked up themselves with alcohol or are just unbearable to be around if they drink.
I agree, after about 6 months of being 21 I was like “huh, is this it” Bars are over priced, loud, the good ones are overly crowded, the empty ones are dingy as shit, bar crowds are generally shitty people in my experience…I mean I enjoy catching a buzz every now and then, or having a beer or two while watching a game, but I’d much rather smoke at a friends house.
I feel ya man. I was already tired of bars before I turned 21. I went to college an hour away from Montreal, where the drinking age is 18, so we went up there all the time. I also studied abroad where the drinking at was 18, so I went to tons of bars that semester. I also had a fake ID for awhile when I was 20, so I went to a few bars in the states too.
After I turned 21, I was just like “meh…”. The only plus was not having to waste time on a Saturday afternoon badgering my frat brothers to take me to the liquor store.
I can’t drink for health reasons and don’t really care. Just never had any interest in alcohol anyway.
I’m the oldest of my group of friends.
Be prepared to get hounded for beer/liquor runs after you turn 21.
Yep. I had about 5 really good friends in college who were a year younger. I must have made like 3 runs to the liquor store every Saturday.
Also why do the Yankees and Cowboys play at the same time? I’ll keep up with the thread because my Dad is watching the Cowboys. His favorite team.
It must be tough to be him.
Have you explained to him that the season isn’t going to get any better for the Cowboys than week 1?
Though I will be interested to see what happens on a kneel down play today should Dallas win.
I’m a huge Cowboys fan too.
But out of my 3 favorites. (Yankees, Cowboys, and Knicks.) I rank them Yankees, Cowboys, and Knicks. In that order.
ugh…you’re a cowboys fan? I guess it’s better than being a Eagles or Redskins fan…
Dude. Don’t even get me started on Redskins fans.
Blame my Dad. haha. At least I’m not the bandwagon type. One playoff win as a fan. I was in diapers for their last Super Bowl.
I’m happy to say I was born and raised as a Giant fan, and have seen 2 superbowl wins before my 23rd birthday. I know I probably have a lot of life left, but after the 2007-2008 superbowl I said I’d be content if that was their only superbowl win in my life time.
I’m a much, much, much bigger baseball fan than football, but that Superbowl win in 2008 was one of the greatest nights of my life. Including myself, it was 5 Giants fans and roughly 45 Patriots fans in the room.
Makes sense.
First game I have any memories of is Super Bowl 21. I was just about 6.
I still don’t really believe what I saw yesterday. Now it is time to complete our revenge. Bring it Hirok.
If Ibanez has played first a lot earlier in his career, is there any reason why Swish is playing first and not Ibanez? There’s always hate about his outfield defense, would it hurt to try him out at first for a few innings?
He hasn’t played as many as ten games at first since 2004.
So, yes, it probably would hurt.
I’m sure they spoke to Raul about it, I mean why wouldn’t they? He probably told Joe the same thing Chavez did, if they desperately needed him to he could BUT he doesn’t feel comfortable doing it.
Does anyone know how to say “en fuego” in Japanese?
?????
I assume that Ibanez’s performance yesterday means he will be starting for the rest of the year….
Ichiro up to 134 wRC+ as a Yankee. Same wRC+ as in 2004 when he broke the single season hit record. Very nice.
This reminds me, I’d like to share a brief facebook exchange between a non-saber savvy friend of mine.
After Ichiro’s homer yesterday, I posted the following status: “Please, nobody tell Ichiro that it’s not 2004 anymore.”
A friend messaged me and said: “Why 2004?”
Me: “Because that was probably his best year, he had a 134 wRC+”
Friend: “So…he was under the Mendoza line?”
Me: “…………………..”
Try explaining these stats to 16 and 17 year old kids.
I could never. This friend of mine is my age (24) and goes to Law School. But he can’t grasp sabermetrics.
Wait, you stuart a’d him at the end?
throw him a parade…..
The slacker needs to keep it up.
Good for him to be in an actual race this year…tat itself might of turned the clock back a couple of three years.
Wow, a Steve Balboni reference.
I missed the reference, but I loved Balboni.
Saw him play in Nashville. He hit some very long balls. The crowd would go quiet when he came up.
How many hits will Jetes and Ichi combine for today, I say over 3.5.
I’d say over 3.9…
I’m at 3.998, but I rounded down.
Do the A’s have a starting pitcher w/ a sub 3.6 ERA (Before Blackley yesterday)?!
I’ve been watching some odd show on Netflix called Wilfred, it’s kinda like a cross between Ted and Weeds, but better. I recommend it.
That’s the show were Frodo sees a dog as a person in a dog costume where everybody else see’s a dog right?
Yeah, I’m not the biggest Frodo fan, I actually despised him prior to this series. It’s just a different show, unlike most of the stuff on, perhaps that’s why I liked it. But I also liked Lilyhammer too, so yeah.
I don’t have a problem w/ him, I just will always see him as a Hobbit after LOTR.
I loved the TV show Lost, but it took almost an entire season for me to see Charlie as anything but a hobbit.
He annoyed me tremendously in LOTR but after about half way through the Wilfred series, I started to warm up to him. I guess cause he tried killing himself in the first episode, I was hooked, hoping he’d succeed.
They’re GREAT friends. Ethier ways there’s nothing wrong with their “friendship.” I’d imagine Yunel Escobar would feel differently.
I’m not sure I want to click play on this…ever.
You know you did.
Still haven’t. I’m waiting for the half inning.
Unfortantely, I did, againist my better judgement.
Reverse the trend of no run support for Hiroki!
I’m glad to see Stephen Drew continues to get on base.
Poor Granderson. Dude has had like no days off this year, and was supposed to get one yesterday. Then he plays 11 innings anyway.
Cuz he’s a player and he crush a lot (of inside fastballs and hanging breaking balls).
First pitch to Cespedes was a strike according to Gameday…hopefully there’s no tiny strike zone today.
Same w/ the first pitch to Reddick. According to game day right at the knees.
Hirok-a-dok is not sharp at all right now.
good job not giving in there, with ice cold reddick coming up
Settle down HIROK
JOHN SHUT UP!!!!!!!!!!
God damn it. Nothing can be easy, huh?
Oh boy.
The strikezone is tight per my eyeballs, my 70″ TV and confirmed by Gameday.
Kuroda looks like garbage so far, not good.
He’s getting squeezed and allowed one hard hit ball. If the strike zone opens up bit he’ll be fine.
An inauspicious start.
Kuroda’s hanging everything.
Phew. Could have been much worse. Let’s hope Hirok finds his groove next inning.
Well, down 95 points on the final day of the matchup.
My plan? Start the maximum NINE PITCHERS today. This will either end up being the greatest day in fantasy history, or I will go down in a blaze of glory. But I ain’t giving that bastard the satisfaction of giving up.
Never give up! Never surrender!
Not to rub it in, but I’m sitting at 14-2 on the final day of the Semifinals match up
Jeter better work the count.
HE DID!!!
Loved it.
I’m in the Bay Area, so no MLB.tv for me. My choices are A’s TV broadcast and TBS. What do you think? A’s broadcast, right?
I’m watching on TBS, and they’re mildly annoying. No experience with the Oakland guys, though.
The Oakland announcers are actually really good IMO. They have really good field mics today.
I agree. They don’t bother me like a ton of other home team telecasts do. At least, they don’t come off with the obvious “WE HATE THE YANKEES!” vibe that telecasts like that of the Angels.
God willing, I will never listen to an Angels telecast ever again.
when jeter retires, I hope its one of those “this is my last year”. I love fairwell tours around the league.
No sac bunts from Ichiro please!
It’s hard or believe this team had virtually the same record as our beloved Yanks coming into this series. After seeing their lineup, that’s damn impressive. Well done Beane and Co.
That was SO low.
Way low. WTF
Where was that call for Hiroki last inning?!
Seriously if that’s a strike both Cespedes and Reddick should have started 0-1 not 1-0.
That…was not a strike.
Not even close.
So the zone opened up now, wonderful.
According the the TBS K zone, this strikezone is…interesting. And by interesting, I mean bad.
Is Smoltz calling the game?
This ump sucks moose cock.
A Møøse once bit my sister…
+Monty Python
+100000
This umpire sucks. Period.
Jeter never moved. Not OK.
Robbie’s lost.
Well, 2 of the 3 outs in that inning were pretty much the direct result of the home plate umpire. Excellent. Cano forced to swing at a ball that he can’t hit because the umpire has been calling it a strike in the inning.
Heh, I’m pretty sure Cano would have swung anyway.
ARod and Cano just got hosed..what’s the over under on pitches closer than the ones we got hosed on that are balls in the next half inning?
Horseshit calls from the ump in that inning.
Wow…the 2-1 was two full ball lengths off the plate, yet Hiroki gets a ball right at the knees right down the middle and it’s called a ball on two separate occasions. I don’t even blame Robbie for going after that pitch…ump probably would’ve called it a strike.
Could Cano run any slower? He makes Ibanez look like Gardner.
I already saw three balls called strikes.
Some of them were ridiculous, I get borderline calls, but 6 inches outside….
Might as well swing at every pitch today, since every pitch is called a strike. I don’t blame u robbie or alex.
Not even close to being safe. What a joke. This is disgraceful.
He was out! God damn it the umps are pissing me off too much for it to only be the second inning.
These umps are a disgrace.
holy shit….
Oh, man, fuck these fucking umpires.
Fuck them right in their fucking asses.
wow…umps fucking robbing us of strikes AND outs…good to know we have to beat the A’s and the fucking umpires today.
Very nice.
First base shit again.
Wow, the umps are getting even worse!
Robot umps, please.
It just kills me their is no accountability. Three out swing so far with bad ump calls.
Fuck this another blown call.
Sick of this shit. Meanwhile the NFL reviews every scoring play and every turnover, plus all the coaches challenges. Has it ruined the game? No football most popular sport in U.S.
Both those pitches to Kottaras where strikes for the A’s.
And the story about Bud Selig only makes it worse.
Grateful the umpire didn’t call him safe at first.
I don’t even want robot umps. I just want fucking instant replay. The technology has been there for a long time now. It is un-fucking-real that there is no safe guard in place in the event of terrible calls.
Well, they got a free run off that homer.
what a fun game to watch
Fucking umpires.
Wow.
Scrub killer alert.
Bud says more replay would slow down the pace of the game? Glad to see he has his priorities straight.
What’s sad about his position is that it should automatically make him the worst commissioner in sports, but we live in a world of Roger Goddell, David Stern and Gary Bettman.
It took 3 seconds to look at the tape and see it was a bad call. And that’s leaving aside the fact that it was actually clearly blown even when viewed full-speed.
Exactly.
That’s at least 1 run on the umpire, and possibly more with the AB’s to Cano and A-Rod.
lasdjkfa;fjalafsdk
^ my feelings of this game so far.
also the 0-0 pitch to Pennington is the exact pitch Alex got rung up on.
UGGGGGGGH
Bad breaks and no break. 3-0
Lost in all of this is that Kuroda’s really not been sharp since that Sunday night game vs. Boston.
Really doesn’t help when his outs are being turned into hits today.
I wonder if Girardi will leave Kuroda out there to soak up innings if he keeps pitching badly/getting fucked by the umpires.
Does he have a choice? Hopefully, Kuroda settles down.
Girardi should pull him as soon as possible…getting fucked by the umpires is a HUGE blow to his confidence.
After the bullpen pitched 11 innings lat night? Not a chance.
He was joking. Go back and read yesterday’s game thread
Ah yes now I remember. I should read Names more closely.
Girardi probably won’t be in the dugout by the time kuroda is out.
Umps have decided the outcome of this game. Blown call at first, small zone for Kuroda, huge zone for A’s. lets go Yanks, screw these dbags
Nice, three outs! Let’s go back to the dug out, boys!
…wait, what? There’s only two outs? Fuck you umps.
This fecking team is feckimg turrible. Roli, fo da love of Mo, please be better!
*fecking *Roki
Can somebody get a shot of Swisher with the ball in his glove, foot on the bag, and Donaldson 2 steps away from the bag?
That call may have been even worse than the one they missed on Teixeira if we ignore the situation of the game.
Out by a full step. Not even close. Even to the naked eye.
They were both terrible. I think we should collect pictures of all the blown calls this season and mail them to Bud Selig.
Then maybe, for good measure, mail in the TV ratings of NFL games to show him that replay won’t ruin shit about the game.
It’s actually a good idea.
Here’s what Girardi should say to Estabrook when he inevitably gets tossed from this game:
HAHAHAHAHA
on a side note Wil Ferrell usually pisses me off. Every movie he is in he is just screaming stupid shit. It gets old fast.
I really don’t like Will Ferrel either, but I do love Anchorman. And Old School. Outside of those though, he’s insanely overrated.
See, I’m not a big fan of Old School.
I generally like Ferrell with a few exceptions. I thought Casa De Mi Padre was pretty funny. His serious stuff has been pretty good, too.
I never saw Casa De Mi Padre. But Taladega Nights and Blades of Glory were two of the worst attempts at comedy I have ever seen.
I think I own those two. I used to just buy almost everything. Haven’t watched either in a while, but I recall liking them.
Casa De Mi Padre is almost entirely in Spanish and it’s basically one big meta joke. It pretty much parodies Mexican movies and how there are bad translations and loads of continuity errors.
Blades of Glory was awful! Taladega Nights was a classic!
+1000000
I love lamp.
I’M RIDING A FURRY TRACTOR!!
When this all gets sorted out, I think you and me should get an apartment together.
It’s amazing to think that the AL East race might already be pretty much over if not for the missed call on Teixeira a few weeks ago. If they win that game, it’s a 3 game deficit instead of 1, and Baltimore is probably settling for the wild card.
Umpiring has cost the Yankees so many opportunities this season. I wonder if you add up all the WPA decreases caused by obvious missed calls, whether it adds up to multiple wins for this team?
I was thinking thew same thing. Not to be Greg-like paranoid or anything, it seems a lot of blown calls have gone the other way.
Derek Lowe feels slighted by that text poll.
does nick swing at these without seeing the previous cano AB?
Way to work that walk.
From the reaction of the crowd to a lot of somewhat long flyballs, it often seems as if there are 40-50k John Sterlings in the stands.
I think it’s hilarious that John Smoltz is still butthurt about us pretty much ending his career. Then he just dropped the good ole saying: “You don’t hit 3 run homers in the playoffs.” Maybe he was in the clubhouse when Leyritz hit his….
ps please don’t waste another leadoff walk.
Smoltz is a fucking terrible announcer. Any time I’ve ever heard him he’s passively aggressively rooting against the Yankees. And as I said a few days ago, I heard him earlier this year say he didn’t believe in run differential and then cite it as a reason for why a team wasn’t going to get back into the race.
I don’t even think it’s all that passive. He hates that his Braves could never get past the Yankees.
He hates us. He acts like every HR is a joke and we’d be the Royals without the short porch. It’s just a product of him getting DFA’d by the Sox after we killed him and 1996/1999. And him being a douche. Can’t forget that.
He’s a dickhead of the nth degree.
Speaking of MLBN, I heard Harold Reynolds say something in passing that I literally couldn’t believe. Paraphrasing:
“Not giving Miguel Cabrera the MVP, if he wins the Triple Crown, would be like telling Secretariat that he wasn’t the best horse.”
It was nearly 1:00 in the morning, I was catching a drink before playing some video games, and I nearly had a mini-eruption at hearing that. Mind-boggling stupidity.
I don’t really want anyone to be fired – but I don’t know how Reynolds has a job as an analyst.
Probably butthurt from 1996 and 1999 as well, which you partially allude to.
The 2009 Yankees hit the most home runs in franchise history. They have a postseason worth remembering as well.
Nice AB Swish. Griffin is not sharp. Make him pay Russ!
From ball four to a GIDP. Sigh.
this is like watching AJ Burnett pitch at Fenway
This game feels like it has already been stolen from the Yankees.
Griffin hasn’t been that great, but the strike zone has been so large that it has taken the Yankees out of multiple at bats in this game.
Now they are down 3 runs, and it’s going to be tough to fight the combination of a decent pitcher and a terrible umpiring crew. Better hope somebody runs into one, because the umpires will not allow them to string together enough good at bats to get to this guy.
And Kuroda’s getting squeezed like crazy.
He is already at 45 innings through 2 innings. I doubt he goes that deep. Now over to you Tim Mccarver.
“Pitch counts are overrated. Kuroda should pitch until his arm falls off, because that’s what Gibby and Left would have done.”
Lefty*
Was Martin even hustling on that GIDP? I was stunned to see him so far away from the bag when that ball was hit to the SS’s right and not very hard.
Gomes was busting it hard on that one. He made it a lot closer than I expected.
griffin is pitching away away away.
And he’s getting, strike, ball, strike called.
Was trying to stay away today but the strike zone is really bad, isn’t it? Is it bad for both teams? Sorry, sometimes it’s hard to listen to our announcers.
According to game day there where at least 3 pitches called a strike for Griffin (one resulting in a strike out) that Kuroda had called a ball. Exact same pitch type, exact same location according to game day.
If the umpire was calling the same zone for Kuroda that Griffin is getting, the A’s would have no chance. Every 2-seamer from Kuroda is missing 2-3 inches off the plate and they are spitting on it.
I love hearing O’Neill talk about the strategy of hitting.
That first pitch to Ibanez for a strike was almost an identical pitch to the one Kuroda started out Gomes with for a ball.
This is beyond disgraceful at this point. It makes you wonder whether Major League Baseball passed down a directive to make sure Oakland doesn’t get swept.
I’m glad the ump didn’t waste time in letting us know if the bullshit would continue
I feel like I’m repeating myself…but jesus that first pitch to Ibanez was a good 4 inches off the plate…this is insanity.
it makes it difficult for this team, you have to swing at everything.
It was annoying seeing this Griffin schmuck shutting the Yankees down in Oakland.
I don’t want to see it again.
Well when he has a strike zone the size of a double door way and Kuroda’s strike zone has been the size of a credit card it’s hard.
Nevertheless. Without looking, I’m guessing the Orioles already lead at Fenway. They don’t seem to ever lose these days anyway. Would really like to end this homestand with a W.
It’s actually 0-0 Top 3.
That’s a minor miracle.
By the way, Plouffy and R-Tils (if either of you are here), my dad was thoroughly confused reading through that thread on my facebook wall. It was amusing for me.
the one that culminated in R-Tils wife telling him to “fuck a dick sideways?”
Yes. And my dad “liked” my comment saying that “I’m speechless.”
I talked to him a few hours ago and he was like “what the fuck was that all about?” I had to explain what RAB was to him.
Oh, Rob’s your dad. I figured he was your brother or cousin.
Yep. My brother actually isn’t big on baseball, unfortunately.
Also: I hate trying to explain Tumblr and RAB to people…I always feel like a psycho when I start talking about specific people.
From 3-1 to 2-2 on Jeter. These calls completely change the course of an at bat.
Can just everyone on the Yankees roster beat this fucker to death with their bats in the 5th inning?
Mazel Tov
LOL John and Suzyn just commented that the umpire has been calling the low strike, and has been doing so for both pitchers. I swear they need lasik AND glasses.
Im sure they also freshly squeeze their own oranges and randomly have cases of old McDonalds syrup ready to go for their homemade pancakes.
Look at all the balls the Yankees are swinging at just off the plate…they freaking have to.
This umpire is probably destroying Kuroda’s confidence with this tight strike zone. It’s CRIMINAL I tell you. CRIMINAL!
How dare the umpire not just TALK to Kuroda before fucking him over. Criminal.
What was the trivia question?
Four players to win MVP as an A and then spend at least a year as a Yankee (Reggie, Giambi…)
Rickey’s gotta be another.
Yep, and…then I get lost. Canseco would be number 4, but I am pretty sure the question specified spent at least a year with the Yanks.
Oddly enough, that is the same way that Rickey would have phrased it if he was answering the question himself.
Reggie, Giambi, Ricky(if it’s just played for both), and I have no clue.
Hahaha…Reddick’s like 0-18 this series. That has to feel awful!
Not just Yankees, he’s fallen apart since the end of July
Smoltz openly hoping for Reddick to get a hit….a little payback for the Ichiro lineout
J-LO looking good.
Plenty of strike zone complaints flying around here . . . Is this a serious gripe or are we bitching because this stud is shutting the Yankees down (again)?
It’s been very bad, and not even for both sides.
A combination Sir Troll. Inconsistency between teams calls would be the primary gripe, kind sir.
You’re clearly not following the game if you don’t realize it’s a serious gripe. It’s been god awful.
That, and the umpire complaining was greatly boosted by the blown call at first.
Kuroda’s pitch count isn’t so bad anymore.
BASERUNNER!
Do something here. Please?
Wait, did we hear Cano hustling? Is that a little Raul influence?
GARBAGE TIME!!!!!!!!!!
OK, let’s go Yanks!
SWISSSSHHHHHHHER
Tie game if there was replay!!!
Swish!!
WOO-HOO!!!!!
Hmm. Who was he showing up there? Griffin or Estabrook?
Or John Smoltz, maybe?
just got in and it’s obvious i’m gonna need to a drink for this game.
Atta boy Swish.
TBS viewers – please tell us Smoltz scoffings at this.
He hasn’t said a damn word haha.
Smoltz probably thinks that was a YS2 Special.
That pitch was on a tee.
Srsly. Kind of like Sweaty Freddy’s last couple batters yesterday.
*clears throat for singing voice*
Gaaaaarbaaage tiiiiiiiiime….is the best tiiiiiiiime!
Yankees 2, Umpires 1, Oakland 2
Swisher the master of Garbage Time.
Too bad the umps blew that call at first.
Right back to the shitty strike zone.
Was seriously going to comment that a HR would be nice, because I want some players on this team to get close to 100 RBIs (counting stat and all) – but he homered before I could finish typing. Not that I’m complaining.
Please never do that again, Curtis.
The umps are PISSED now, this zones gonna go from awful to putrid in 3…2…1…
Is it just me or does Griffin look like he should be designing levels for World of Warcraft as opposed to being an MLB pitcher?
Damn it, this isn’t the one I meant to post. But you get the idea.
Hahaha, it was still awesome though.
No it’s not just you. His thumbnail pic screams I IZ TEH LEET!!!
Great adjustment they’ve made. They’re basically eliminating that curveball and just waiting for him to come in with something harder. And since he refuses to double up on it and rarely throws it with 2 strikes, it works.
Glad they’re getting to Griffin. He’s just not that good.
He sucks 2d time around.
I wish Granderson still stole bases. I don’t trust Russ.
Time for some more RISPY hits.
Surprised they weren’t sending Granderson there on 3-2, but they got lucky that wasn’t hit a bit harder for another DP.
John said he was going…but then again…it’s john.
Odds on him accidentally calling the A’s pitcher “A.J. Burnett” at least once today?
YESH
Martin is fast, like a cheetah!
Nevermind.
LORD VOLDEMORT!!!!!!!
Griffin’s already over 80 pitches.
YEAH! RISPHIT!
How did Martin not score?
I like it when Raul is productive.
I thought for sure Martin would score after Reddick bobbled it.
Same here. He must be seriously fucking slow.
YES!
RISPwins the best.
Can’t believe that stayed fair. If Ibanez is starting to heat up, that could be huge.
haha wanted to see ibanez with another triple
how on earth did russ not score there
NUNIE!!!!!!!!!
W/ a productive out!
Alright, lock this one down Hirok-a-dok.
Now THAT’s the way you win in the playoffs. -John Smoltz
He actually said that, w/ no sense of Irony in his voice…half the runs scored on this inning was on a huge home run.
But you can’t count on HRs in the playoffs!!!!!!!
You can’t count on THREE run home runs, right?
And they’re running up his pitch count too. After the 14 inning game, that really could have an impact. Oakland used its top relievers for a lot yesterday, while Soriano and Robertson had the day off.
Yeah. I was thinking about that this morning while working out. Big bullpen advantage for the Yanks today.
Good point. Cook and Balfour got a lot of work yesterday.
Dolittle’s available though…and he throws GAS
Good baserunning by Russ, went on contact.
Take that, umps.
What would the score be with a fair strike zone? how about a reversed one?
So now it’s New York 4 Oakland 2 Umpires 1 by my score.
These umpires are despicable the yanks should really be winning 4-1 or 4-2 if not for that call at first two days in a row they have blown obvious calls at first
What did you think of that big HR by Swisher?
Meanwhile Doubront is pitching a gem against Baltimore.
Some hard hit balls that inning. Take that Team Umps!
Griffin’s at 91 pitches through 4!
quick inning PLEASE
Cliff Pennington has to stop getting hits.
Seems Yankees score the inning my video cuts out…
Now what – we have no bullpen
Robertson and Soriano are rested. Joba only threw 1 inning yesterday and did not pitch on Friday. Eppley threw to 1 batter and is rested. And maybe Phelps is available now too since his start was 4 days ago.
They have arms. Now if you were to say the same thing about Oakland, it might be very different. Balfour threw 2 yesterday. Blevins threw over an inning. Cook pitched 2. Neshek threw a ton of pitches.
Yes on Sori, Robertson, Joba, and Eppley. But Suzyn said Joe said that Phelps won’t be available till tomorrow at the earliest.
And stop letting Stephen fricken’ Drew get on base.
This is ridiculous. The guy is a terrible hitter.
He’s like their Ciriaco. Very annoying.
Come on, Hiroki. Shut down.
Rothschild needs to go out to the mound…Kuroda is losing confidence fast.
I can’t believe he is treating Kuroda-san so terribly.
It’s criminal.
ugh…sour grapes but that would’ve been a 1-2 pitch for Oakland’s starter.
I hate when one of our two best pitchers has a day where he sucks.
wtf is wrong with our pitching staff? I can’t ever remember a staff as a whole worse at shutdown innings.
“Shutdown innings” is not a separate skill that a pitcher can be good or bad at independently of just pitching well.
The splitter looks good, but his sinker isn’t sinking.
Please – he has to get someone out
And he did.
Wow, we actually got a call for once!
Clutch K. GIDP time.
Can we ever get an easy win…ever again?
Kuroda has zero location today.
yuck.
Shit.
*sigh*
Never easy.
wtf HIROK. Step it up.
wtf
Double yuck.
This is a terrible performance so far from Kuroda.
GIDP would be good right now.
K works, too!
Sox are up 1-0
Chance to get that Magic Number down to Marris.
Am I being too much of a broken record to say how weird it is that this is good news?
Nope…cause I still feel dirty being happy about it. Just please tell me neither Ciriaco of Pedrioa had anything to do with it.
Nope. Cody Ross scored on an error.
That makes it slightly better.
I have been feeling really odd rooting for the Socks.
I like to say that I’m rooting against the Orioles rather than for the Red Sox.
still have my fingers crossed that skynet comes on line and takes out Fenway.
A man can dream.
looks like we’re on our way to another walk off, huh?
you bite your tounge!!!
Please no extra innings.
tongue bit. I guess I’m an oddity. I like em, just in the bottom of the 9th, not the bottom 14th. a blowout would be nice though.
Nice!
Kuroda’s numbers don’t look so great today, but he’s pitching pretty well still.
One of the runs he’s allowed was due to a terrible missed call, and another was a bloop that barely went 130 feet on a great pitch to Cespedes. A third was on a wild pitch, and the only really legitimate run was the solo HR in the 2nd.
The strike zone has been tiny for him, and he’s made some really tough pitches to strand runners in big moments.
Alot of his stuff’s been up in the zone though. This seems like the type of game Clemens or Andy said they grinded it out.
Kuroda is grinding it out. He would have only allowed 3 runs if the umpire didn’t completely blow that call at first base, and he’s made some great pitches to keep it at just 4. The Cespedes hit is a terrible break, because he made a great pitch on him.
I agree 100%, I’m just saying he’s having an off day w/ his stuff, and with the umpires ineptitude to get calls right and call an even strike zone it’s even more difficult. I personally think he’s pitched well all things considered.
You legitimize a lot of runs pitchers give up.
Or so it seems.
It’s not legitimizing. If we are going to evaluate how he is pitching, we have to consider how he gave up the runs. If a pitcher gives up 10 weak grounders just perfectly placed down the 3rd base line and they score 7 runs, it’s hard to really fault the pitcher?
Other than the home run, the A’s have not scored a single run on a hard hit ball. That Cespedes hit was just horrible luck. He jammed him with a great pitch and he got just enough of it to bloop it to the outfield. 1 of the runs on the HR was only on base from a missed call. What can a guy do?
We also have to consider how he has gotten outs, and whether he has thrown poor pitches that he has gotten lucky on.
Ichiro has just been amazing.
Wow, was Tebow bad.
was/is/always will be.
It’s a QB race to see who can suck more.
Wow – they need to leave Sanchez alone so he can stay in the flow. And I’m a Giants fan.
And Revis is hurt – that stinks.
Run Ichi, run!!
Strike out some more, Alex.
he will, just like every other player will strike out more. some hitters just don’t see curtain pitchers. it happens.
I comprehend why ‘fans’ boo Alex, but I can’t stand it.
Booing for lack of hustle or making a boneheaded play (Knoblauch 98 ALCS) I can see. Booing when a guy is struggling is dumb.
I think it’s ridiculous. why boo your own players? a-rod has been pretty good when he’s played. you don’t boo a player when he has one bad game at the plate. they don’t do it to jeter, they shouldn’t do it to any other yankee.
Agreed. I have never and will never boo a Yankee. I don’t care who he is.
Agreed. It is terrible that the fans boo A-Rod.
or any yankee.
Yep. I am against booing your own team.
ARod swings through two hanging sliders. On his way to the sombrero. Rates a few boos I’d say.
nope.
Then just some quiet grumbling lol
Then just some quiet grumbling wouldn’t want to offend anytone lol
It’s not about offending anyone. it’s about rooting for your team. you don’t boo jeter for it, so don’t boo other yankees.
no it does not.
Why so much hate for A-Rod?!
Alex is the few that tries to win as shown yesterday. Booed regardless. I wish i can punch all of you in the face.
I get the contract thing, but have never really understood the hate. For awhile it was “he’s a chocker”, but the Yankees don’t even make it to the World Series without A-Rod in 2009. I’ve always liked him, personally.
Prior to 2009 A-Rod was a bit of an egotistical douche. Since then I’ve only seen the “team first” version of Alex. Don’t understand the hate either.
booing him has nothing to do with hate, just his performance
No, it has plenty to do with hate. Maybe not for some fans, but many just hate him.
bullshit, ho else on the yanks do you boo? not andy, not jeter, not mo. just because they didn’t come through our system, doesn’t mean they’re not yankees.
Like I said, I’ve always liked him. You’d think 2009 would have redeemed him for most of the fans.
Can’t blame the guy for the contract. If Hank offered me that much money, I’d take it too, even though I’m sure I’d have like -100 WAR.
And because of that he stuck it to Varitek. I can forgive being a dick when you can set your priorities straight.
I keep a signed A-Rod ball on my mantle, one of my fav players. He wants to win and hustles every play.
Orioles are threatening. Second and third, no one out.
Damn it. That was an inch or two away.
Great call. That was actually foul, just barely.
ike davis would have hit that fair
How is it possible for John Sterling to make that sound so fair? Even after he called it foul.
That ball missed the chalk by the width of less than a hair.
Man it has been such a blast watching Ichiro lately.
Aaaand Baltimore tied it.
Wow, another great call. The ball beat him by quite a bit but Pennington was late on the tag. Maybe these guys are redeeming themselves?
Double steal. Kottaras can’t throw, Swisher will be on the RH side, and Ichiro is the lead runner.
Bet you 5 internet dollars it doesn’t happen.
Fucking Baltimore tied it up. Are they ever going to lose again?!
In the WC game.
My 5 year old son just called a Swisher HR.
awww…I hope he’s right.
Tell your son not to quit his day job and become a psychic.
I’ll keep him out of Vegas.
Jerry blevins is a cool guy. I met him in toronto and he saved me and my kid sister tickets to a game. Threw us a ball too from the bullpen.
Just kill this fucking umpire.
Absolutely ridiculous call.
oh fuck me. no way that’s a strike.
In the other batter’s box. What a freaking joke.
This umpire has single handedly changed the complexion of the game from an offensive standpoint.
Oh JESUS CHRIST this is just getting ridiculous. If I’m Joe I go on Brooks Bros, print out the zone today and when I go out to argue bring it with me.
“Those are the calls that an umpire makes”
I miss Hawk.
A-Rod should not be getting owned by Griffin like this. Even if that first K was bulshit.
it happens. he does have a 2.45 era and .216 ba against. he’s been a good pitcher this year since coming up.
SSS. His stuff isn’t that great. Certainly not so great he should be striking out A-Rod three times.
Where is Girardi on these calls? He needs to go out there and at the very least keep his players from risking ejection. Not only that, but the calls have been so damn terrible today that he should probably be out there yelling at him.
i was thinking that as well, and we started to see him head out but swish was already on his way to the dugout. i know swish was pissed and were it any other game of the season, i’d say fuck yeah, get ejected. but just can’t have it today. something has to give though, that ump is just awful.
Wow. I hate awful umps, therefore I boo them… BOOOOO!
ok, that strike 3 call to swish? THAT is when you start booing.
to clarify, you boo the ump.
i’m fine with booing umps, or the other team. i don’t boo though. i call them assclowns.
I’m fine with binding their hands and feet and throwing them in the Atlantic. This level of incompetence is maddening.
John just said if Blevins was on the open market 20 teams would be interested in him…I think the number would be more along the lines of 32.
Sorry for the pedantry but 30…
BOOOOOOOOO, the umps.
Ugh, and the Skins just tied the game
2-1 curveball to Granderson, NOT a strike.
Nearly every key at bat for Oakland in this game has been accompanied by a crucial pitch in a count like 1-1, 2-1, etc being called incorrectly.
This is downright embarrassing. I really wonder if MLB has told these umpires to try to help out the A’s to keep them from getting swept. It’s inexcusable to miss as many calls as they have today, and only in one direction.
I really doubt MLB told them anything like that. They just suck.
a conspiracy theorist !
I hope you are being facetious about the umpires intentionally favoring the As on orders of MLB. Because the chances of that are zero.
How can Chris Rose do all the NFL network stuff and the MLB network stuff?
Accountability . MLB umps have none.
I’d be surprised if Joe Torre wasn’t there – he’s in studio w/Dan Patrick tomorrow — NYC studio. Maybe someone can call and ask.
Kritis da K .What would a yankee game be without a K from Kritis.
40 HR, 100 RBI and 200 K’s ..take it or leave it
I’ll take it for now. Wouldn’t gamble on him in the future.
Agreed. I like Curtis on the team right now, but I am firmly in the “pick up his 2013 option and let him walk in 2014″ camp.
It’s a tough call. Made worse by the .230/.320
I think you an get great value in a trade for him. MLB players think he’s the 3rd best defensive CF. And with his power someone’s gotta want to give up good prospects for him.
Maybe, but I’m guessing MLB general managers are better informed about his defense than MLB players.
I think if they’re serious about getting under 189M for 2014-15, next year might be there best chance at a WS for a few years. Granderson would likely contribute more to a WS run next year than anybody they’d get in a trade.
I…wow Josh Reddick has been abysmal this series.
He’s been terrible all month. Batting .145 for the month.
NunEEE
Oh Nuñez… no…
How do you type the “n” with the squiggle on an English computer keyboard?
it’s called a tilde (˜) and on a mac it’s opt + N, then N again (ñ)
At least we can trust Nunez to be consistent.
Oh, hello Eduardo.
Nunie…
Nunez is a fucking error waiting to happen.
Euardo Nunez
Why?
Mike, still gotta go w/the SS that can hit w/intangibles.
Booo. Sorry, I mean FUUUCK.
>.<
Okay, okay, okay…I know why the strikezone sucks balls. Here it is, after six hours yesterday MLB wants to keep the average time of the game down OR they were advised to help our the A’s to ensure they win one to keep the playoff race exciting.
Never assume a conspiracy when incompetence can explain it just as well.
agreed.
there’s no way the mlb is tell the umps to squeeze the yanks and expand for the a’s. you want to yanks more in the postseason then anyone. all of the mlbs revenue goes down when the yanks aren’t in it. if anything, mlb should be making sure the yanks go in as the al east crowns.
There is no way MLB is telling the umps to do anything other than call the game as fairly as possible. You think the umps would ever in a million years (1) do something unfair if MLB told them to and (2) not immediately hold a press conference to announce that MLB had told them to do something unethical? And you think MLB isn’t aware of this? The umps hate MLB management.
Bottom line: The near certain downside for MLB to try to tell the umps to sway games is immense, and the very uncertain upside is minimal. There is no way they would attempt to do this, and there is no way the umps would go along with it if they did.
I know. that’s what i’ve been saying.
cinderella story, good job beane and co., blah blah blah
fuck you a’s
One more strike here Hirok!
That’s a strike all afternoon for Oakland.
So was ball 1.
Kuroda is just not getting the calls the A’s are. Greg must be shitting himself.
“It’s just bad luck.”
Actually Greg would probably say, “I TOLD YOU we would have bad luck.”
THEY’RE NOT WINNING ANYTHING!!! STOP COMPLAINING!!
Fuck.
We’re going to lose this game, aren’t we?
yeah, just like the last 2 games we were supposed to lose.
It doesn’t feel good, but how many people thought the same thing yesterday? Still only down one run.
Fuck fuck fuck.
Shitty defense strikes again.
Fucking two outs, two strikes, and Cliff Pennington again.
Fucking serious, Hiroki?
Kuroda you jackass.
How do you blame Kuroda when they get four outs in the inning and four strikes in the at bat?
He’s been pretty bad today, though. Yeah, the inning should have been over, but he did give up that hit to a not-very-good player. You have to pitch around errors.
He gave up a ground ball. It found a hole, as ground balls sometimes do.
And he’s STILL been really bad today.
He’s definitely been shaky all game. I just don’t really blame him for that particular run.
Kuroda got fucked by the error.
Nunez’s uERA gets higher.
Not on Kuroda – that’s on Nunez.
Martin did not block the plate. If he blocks the plate, Donaldson is probably out because he slides straight into him.
This team is so badly outplaying the A’s today. It’s incredible. Nunez’s error comes back to bite them, shocking. Then again, if the umpire didn’t take the bat out of their hands so many times, it might not have mattered.
We just got beat by Cliff Pennington and the umpires….they’re about equal in talent level
This is why I refuse to buy into the Nunez hype. The guy’s a fucking DISASTER waiting to happen, regardless of whatever “energy” he brings.
Ichiro’s outfield assists as a Yankee: 1
I only have radio, was that play make-able?
Nunez. This ones on you bra.
pretty sure he doesn’t wear bras, come on man.
I dunno, this former Yankee did…
http://tinyurl.com/8efrqxb
that was only on his nights off.
This team frustrates me just as much as Baltimore. I hope we don’t have to face either in the postseason, not because I don’t think we can beat them, but because I cannot handle a series of the most frustrating baseball games one could imagine.
I miss the Twins.
RAPADA THROW THE BALL TO HOME. ONLY TO HOME. NEVER THROW THE BALL ANYWHERE BUT THE CATCHER YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU’RE DOING.
lolz
Un fucking real.
Clay – just stick to throwing to home plate.
Quit throwing the fucking ball away.
Ichiro always seems to be shocked that players run on his arm, and that split second of shock and hesitation always costs him the out. His release was again too slow on that throw.
Clay Rapaa
This has been one of the worst series defensively I’ve ever seen.
Overshadowed by how terrible the umpiring has been. It’s seriously been like a D minus these past three games.
Rapada in to walk the leftie.
Good call
The reverse jinx worked.
Now can we please stop giving away runs?
Damn, these Oakland Drew-Penningtons are a real gas! Great team.
Okay, lets scratch two runs across here and hand the ball over to Jo-Ro-So.
I feel like we’re gonna win this game, despite the errors.
And despite currently losing. Optimism is a helluva drug.
i’m with you. one run, very doable.
though that might be the alcohol talking
Wow, are these announcers blind? They are acting like Cespedes just made an amazing play. He was jogging half speed and almost lost it in the sun.
Now let’s see if Nunez can make up for that terrible error from the last half inning
Bring Voldemort home!
TBS just showed the A’s rookie hazing dress up as wrestlers. Holy shit are there a lot of rookies.
Any Chris Benoits?
No, like real wrestling.
Chris wrestling his family to death wasn’t real?
This kind of wrestling: mhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoSIye7AH9U
“We were wrestling…then it changed…”
Right. I should have said that the A’s rookies were dressed up as “Wrastlers”.
That reminds me I officially hate wrestling. I occasionally watch it as mind numbing entertainment…and loved it when I was a kid, but I was watching a rerun of friday’s smackdown last night…and Kane and Edge where hugging in the center of the ring. Kane doesn’t hug people. Least of all Edge.
I’ve always hated it. My best friend in high school was huge on it, but just wasn’t for me. Trish Stratus was hot as hell back in the day, but I can’t get into something when the results are all staged. If it’s not a movie or a gripping TV show, I don’t want to see staged results.
I’m just saying this guy’s story line should never involve him “hugging it out” with anybody. http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Wres.....andout.jpg
You’re probably right.
Nunie swinging at absolutely everything.
One of those pitches was in the strike zone…good thing Nunie swung at them though, because he would have been rung up otherwise.
And he follows up his error with an even more pathetic at bat. Wow.
Jose Iglesias is amazing with the glove.
so you’re telling there’s a chance?
No.
wow. As fan i take it. or maybe you missed the pass 2 game, or pass 10 for that matter.
past*?
err. yes….grumble grumble.
Seriously. Defensively one of the worst.
Captain Mojo?
Sorry, intangible.
Ichiro…I know you’ve been ridiculously good the past week or so, we need you to continue doing it for at least this AB.
That was a very feeble first baseman stretch.
No reason to swing at a pitch like that. Sometimes Ichiro is looking to swing so much that he swings at bad pitches.
This game sucks. Even if we win I’m going to feel really pissed anyway.
Look on the bright side. No Greg to
tellcommand us not to be negative!I’ll do. zen baseball. it’s not like they have won 9 of 10 or anything…
Zen baseball indeed. I sure as hell wouldn’t have stuck around for yesterday without zen baseball.
a lot in the stadium didn’t. they don’t prescribe to zen baseball.
Why would you be negative? Yankees have taken at least 2 of 3 from a very good A’s team. We can’t control the fact that the Orioles are playing out of their minds.
Because these are real-time reactions to the game as it’s happening.
yes, because being down 1 run in 7th is just insurmountable. i’d rather sulk and bitch about my team then root them on to come back and win this. did you damn them yesterday, repeatedly? Did they win? so it can be done. they can come back and win games.
I never said they couldn’t win. I’d just like them to play better and stop giving away runs. Frustration happens in real time, we can’t all be as perfect and philosophical as Greg.
read this: http://riveraveblues.com/2010/.....all-26319/
come on greg, shouldn’t the yanks win every single game they play? I know I’ve seen a 162-0 season back in the 90s…
Get a room, you two.
Already got an apt. greg, want to get boozed and watch baseball like adults?
Are you fucking kidding me????????
TV viewers…how is the shadow situation? Cause it’s all John has talked for the past full inning.
God damnit Nunie. You’re making it really, really hard to root for you.
There’s a huge shadow halfway between home plate and the mound.
It’s pretty bad
Some more Eduardo Scissorhands.
TAKE FUCKING NUNEZ OUT.
REALLY?
Oh fuck this. Nuñez WTF
DH
NunEEE strikes again.
Ridiculous.
Nix should be in the fucking game.
I was kind of hoping Phelps would be taking Nova’s spot but I guess not.
Another error. Every now and then and you have to live with it…Michael Kay
Why can’t Nix play if Jeter’s hurt?
What Kay was saying is that Nunez is a terrible fielder, and if you play him in the field, this is what you are going to get.
This is just who Nunez is. Get used to it, or get rid of him.
Move him to the fucking OF next year.
I don’t think he can hit well enough to be an outfielder.
He might. It’s not like Gardner is a world-beater with the bat. I just don’t think his defense would even remotely make up for it, like it does with Gardner.
Gardner’s an elite defensive player who gets on base a lot and steals at a very high percentage.
Nunez, well to be honest I don’t get what anyone likes about him. Other than his enthusiasm and hustle, which are great, he doesn’t seem like a particularly gifted ballplayer. He doesn’t have great control of the strike zone, and it’s not like he has tremendous power. He’s fast, but you can’t steal first as they say.
And his defense has gone beyond joke status and straight on into nightmare territory.
I mostly agree with you. I think he can be an above average middle infielder if he can settle down with the errors even just a bit. He’s got good range and a good arm, just poor accuracy. For the low standard of middle infielders, I think he has the potential to be above average.
But outfield? No. If Nunez wants to be an above average left fielder, he needs to have Gardner’s defense. And there’s no way that happens. The Yankees are better off giving him reps at short stop/third base an hope he can tone down the errors.
I never understood that. We have a great SS to make up for it then. Who cares if our better hitter is IF or OF as long as he’s there?
They tried that and it was a VERY BAD experiment.
All of these pitches…every single one of the god damned at bat is a strike when the Yankees are batting…i cannot fucking stand it. As a home plate umpire you have one fucking job.
NY Nix time?
Always a bit of an adventure with Arod on the popups.
Can’t have Nuñez at ahort, unless we’re up by 10 runs. simple as that.
http://riveraveblues.com/2012/.....nt-4852896
You sure about that jj? They’re up 10-2 over Detroit right now lol.
Heh. That’s the Tigers though. The Yankees have destroyed the Twins in the postseason over the last several years.
What…THE FUCK.. is this umpire’s problem with the Yanks today?
Idk, but if I was Joe I would’ve been out of the game before Kuroda was today.
Not that it will accomplish anything, and not that they will suddenly be held accountable for their terribleness, but Joe should get himself tossed. These umps are a joke.
I’m not saying it would, I’m just saying Joe’s a much more patient man than I.
I was totally agreeing with you. It baffles me that these umps can get away with such incompetence.
You get the pitchforks, I’ll get the torches. Let’s storm Selig’s office.
And no, I’m not poking fun. I seriously want to storm Selig’s office and demand instant replay, lest he be burned and pitchforked to death.
After we force Selig to sign a rule that allows replay for everything except balls and strikes in his own blood (invoking best interest of baseball clause) we then storm the umpire union and threaten to burn and pitchfork them until there is some checks and balances for calling a set strike zone as well as umpires making bad calls.
Done and done. I’m going to Home Depot right now.
Okay…please runs?!
At least that Nunez error didn’t cost a run.
That was a heck of a play by Swisher. He has filled in admirably at first base lately.
Aaaand John Sterling just messed up the score.
But it’s not his fault, and he’s paying complete attention.
At least he generally remembers which team he works for.
The problem for the A’s is who’s going to close. They used Balfour for two innings yesterday.
only in an emergency should Nunez be allowed to play the field.
i want to slap the fans at the stadium booing a-rod.
The fans should be ashamed of themselves for booing A-Rod.
Yea really, I don’t get it.
Red Sox get a leadoff double…hopefully they can score.
embedded Yankee Luis Ayala doing his job
And they do!
Cano should have more RBIs, I miss you Stu!
….ike davis would have a parade by now…..
……..
….and a raise..
ido not approve of these shadows. boo the shadows.
I remember Robbie Cano.
I’m curious A-Rod booers if you’re going to boo “poor performance” where is the booing for Robbie? he’s been invisible the past few weeks.
Damn you beat me to it.
Stuart on line 1….
But he plays with such grit and effort and per http://baseballplayersalaries.com/
“Robinson Cano is very valuable”, he responsible for 15.48% of his teams production &
“Alex Rodriguez is overpaid”, and only responsible for 5% of the teams production.
Perhaps all the “booers” are avid readers of the aforementioned website.
I highly doubt any of the boo birds are avid readers of anything that’s longer than 140 characters (or whatever twitter is.) or anything not written by Mike Lupica.
But teh sports reporters!?!
OK just for the record. Call it what you want, cursing, booing, shouting stomping up and down…it is just registering displeasure with a player’s performance. ARod takes a lot of heat because he is a statistical outlier, both in contract and in talent. Add to that the PED debacle and you get intense fan upsetment. Maybe undeserved. But life ain’t fair.
Well if it’s “not fair”, then it’s pretty understandable for people to call them out on it, no?
Yes it is.
Yankee fans booed him before the PED revelations, before the huge contract extension, and while he was winning two MVP awards for them.
I don’t boo our players.
They Boo A-Rod but Cano gets a pass.
I want the Yanks to win without wanting the Sox to win.
Robbie is really in a funk and we need him; they boo Alex because of the contract and because he was such a talent.
Matusz just threw a pitch that was literally right down the middle on Gameday.
Fuck this game.
Dylan Bundy coming in.
Dylan Bundy time! I hope he sucks today.
What are the odds the Red Sox lose?
Place estimates now.
I dunno. It’s not possible for the Orioles to walk off on the road, and that seriously hurts their chances.
They’re trying their hardest to find a way to lose.
Granderson going up there hunting fastball on the first pitch and chases, and then he gets the exact pitch he was looking for on 0-1 and pops out to left. Some of these guys just don’t have their head in the game right now. A-Rod leading off swinging at a ball on the first pitch to get himself out was a prime example.
I’m pretty sure their heads are in the game. they’re in a playoff race and it’s pretty obvious they want to win. it just not possible to come through all the time and yes, some players are having a down year. batters fail more often then succeed. granderson still has 39 homers. wouldn’t mind if he had more of a 265 ave, but this is the player he is.
Yep.
How many errors for Nunez? I mean this is obvious by now that he can’t field, I don’t know why he’s always playing.
I had to step away for a minute…how/what did Granderson do for his AB to end so quickly…
Flew out to shallow left.
Weak popup on a fastball right down the middle. His specialty of late (other than the wild swinging K on a pitch a foot outside the zone).
Crazy ending to the 49ers-Vikings game. 3 turnovers in about 1 minute.
Jets took the lead
good to know we’re game planning our pitching around a dude hitting .220 w/ no power.
At least Joe didn’t order the intentional walk.
sometimes even crappy players have a good day. it worked out, but he still hit it pretty hard.
Pennington does have a big platoon split, but are they really scared of 230/301/338 vs. RHP?
Nice!
Now let’s score some runs!!
A-ROD DP BOOOOOOOOOOOOO
… wait…
Bailey’s blowing it
Of course. You didn’t expect the O’s to LOSE, did you?
didn’t expect it but glad they just did.
I don’t know why, but this game is pissing me off so much right now.
http://riveraveblues.com/2010/.....all-26319/
Bah. Whatever.
haha. i think you might enjoy the crowd more at lohud.
The Orioles lost.
!!!!!!
I didn’t think it was possible!
NICE
God I hope we can come back now. That’ll be huge.
Ibanez vs. Doolittle?
He hit home runs yesterday, so clearly his platoon split is gone today.
Joe thinks so.
O’s just lost.
O’s lost
Dallas won. What’s going on in this game?!
Bad umpiring, meh pitching, meh hitting, and bad fielding.
Thanks. My friend has been updating me. I call her my Yankee Siri.
Marry her. True female Yankee fans are hard to come by…most of them are “pink hats.”
FIP’d!!!
The meme lives.
Hahaha. I’m not marrying anyone!
Step up Stonehands c’mon
Now the Yanks need to win
Question about the booing A-Rod thing:
Let’s say Mesa doesn’t miss the bag in yesterday’s game, and he scores. A-rod has the walk off hit and is the hero. Does he still get boo’d today?
Instead, he’s not perceived as the “walk off hero”, thus leading to a shorter lease with the fans. I’m just thinking out lead here, figured I’d throw that out.
He still gets booed.
I’m not so sure. I don’t think he should be booed anyway, but would fans be less willing to boo him if he was the hero of an epic comeback less than 24 hours earlier? Instead of just a guy who had a single and no RBI?
Sad but true. Same with Maris and mantle. Fans never warmed up to Maris even when he was set to break the home run record, mantle could do no wrong
Heh, this reminds me of the movie *61, when the press tried to create a rift between Maris and Mantle, who had been generally getting along and were even living together.
Maris (watching TV): Hey Mick, the press says we’re fighting….are we fighting?
Mantle: Well if the press says it, I guess we are…you son of a bitch.
Hah.. I loved that movie.
i give him credit for the walk off and wouldn’t boo him even if he didn’t come through, but i still think he gets booed today. people tend to hate those that are ridiculously successful. No one would turn down the money he was offered, even if they thought it was too much. no one.
Yep. Like I said somewhere far above in this thread, I would have taken Hanks offer, knowing full well I’d put up like -100 WAR.
same here. boo me all you want. i’m set for life and so are my (fictional) kids and their (fictional) kids and their dog.
You kidding? He carried us in 2009 during the playoffs and still have people booing him for no reason.
How many outs? Gameday says one…John says 2. I’m leaning towards believing Gameday.
How dare you question John Sterling!?!
Isaac Newton of broadcasting right there.
I hope you’re sitting down for this: Sterling was wrong.
Shocked. Utterly Shocked.
Kay really just said, “What a sloppy series for the As!”
Well the A’s did have some costly errors yesterday…
Well he’s not exactly wrong. It’s been sloppy all round though.
Yeah. The way he said it, I was kind of like, “Dude, the Yanks haven’t exactly been playing with Golden Gloves in the field, either.”
Brandon Moss has really helped the Yankees with his play at first base.
Make it happen Cap’n.
Why couldn’t you have hit it towards Nunez?
Actually, the O’s losing means that a loss ISN’T as important. But a win would be even bigger.
Correct
I’m tired of this 1 game difference shit. What is it, 20 straight days now?
sept 3rd i believe.
It would be the first time since 9/2 the Yankees lead the division by more than one solitary game.
I’m shocked the Sox won.
Incredibly frustrating that Nunez’s terrible error is the difference in this game right now. The Yankees have outplayed Oakland yet again today, and don’t have much to show for it because of the umpiring and sloppy plays.
The difference in the game is that Kuroda gave up a homer to one of the worst offensive players in baseball, Cliff Pennington
Or that it was a 2-run HR due to umpire incompetence.
With a guy on base who everyone knows was out.
He still gave up a homer to CLIFF PENNINGTON
fallacy of the predetermined outcome to believe that homer would have happened IF the umpire had done his job.
it happens. imagine being the pitcher that gave up the one homerun that nunez had this year, or cervi a few years ago. it happens.
Ironically, that Cervelli pitcher you speak of is either current Yankee Cody Eppley, or NL phenom Kris Medlen.
huh…yeah, it must feel crappy, but it just shows even the worst mlb player can hit one out once in a while.
Cliff Pennington is hitting .315 in the month of September with an OPS over .800.
The go-ahead run would not have been on base if not for Nunez’s error, and not only that but it was such a bad throw that it gave him 2nd base as well as first. Also, the 2nd run that scored on the HR was only on base because of a missed call by the umpire.
I don’t have the energy to go through another game like yesterday and that in itself stinks. Plus there’s all sorts of crazy overtime going on in football.
rootin hard for the chiefs
I loved that comment by Paulie about giving himself a french manicure with their whiteout! I really do wonder why they keep score since they can just look at a frickin monitor?
This game is set up perfectly for the completion of Walkoff Weekend Part 2.
Prediction: Ichiro gets on in the bottom of the order, A-Rod hits a walk off, strikes out in his first AB tomorrow night and gets booed by Yankee Fans at Target Field.
From your lips to god’s ear.
bottom of the inning*
umpires about to cost us another game huh
So the umpires by screwing the yanks in both the Tex slide game and this one may have cost the yanks 3 games in the standings
yes. umpires have no repercussions for shitty calls. i want robots.
The Yanks have also received the benefit of other missed calls. Over the course of a season, I’m sure it evens out.
Oh, really? So you think that missing a call that ends a game that should have been tied on the play is going to even out over the course of a season?
“Regression to the mean” does not mean “has to even out.” You can still end up with wacky outcomes by chance with a low probability.
““Regression to the mean” does not mean “has to even out.” You can still end up with wacky outcomes by chance with a low probability.”
Exhibit A: The 2012 Orioles.
Exhibit B: 2010 San Francisco Giants.
Exhibit C: Arizona Diamondbacks (2011?)
2007
still want robots.
Ichi-ARod-Cano
no comment.
this is a comment.
Good job Epp…now lets make it happen again.
2-3-4 in the order against a guy who threw 2 innings yesterday. Let’s see if they can actually be patient for once in a key spot.
Alright lets go
By the way, Toronto is totally fucking worthless.
4-14 vs. TB this year. Way to go.
The Rays winning those games is actually good so they will maybe have something to play for in the final series against the Orioles.
and the yanks get to play them. hope they stay worthless.
PATIENCE
I.CHI.RO
shit
3-0 pitch, clearly ball 4, called a strike. What can you do when the umpire is trying to do everything possible to keep Oakland in this game?
I wonder what the score would be if that 3-0 pitch was a strike for Kuroda.
FUCK
Good thing the O’s lost.
FUCK YOU JOHN STERLING. FUCK YOU.
So happy I got a live look in right before the swing!
Fuck.
WTP.
OOOOOOOOOH!!!!!!!!!!!
Dammit that was so close.
Almost….so fucking close!!!
oh god damn that was so damn close.
DAMMIT 3 MORE FEET
I DESPISE YOU JOHN STERLING.
Sure sterling had that in the second deck
I fucking hate Kay. I’m glad I’m not listening to Sterling.
How Sterling’s call went:
Easy fly ball –> Sure thing HR –> out
Now I feel sorry for Alex
his expression when he realized it wasn’t out kinda made me wanna cry.
Just missed it.
Ball 1, called Strike 1. What can you even do?
Thanks for playing Robbie. Now go take a fucking holiday.
How fitting.
A bad call to end the game.
Strike my ASS.
Fuck me. Ah well, 2 of 3 is still pretty good. Bring on the Twinkies.
Bummer.
Fitting end to the game…strike 3 on a pitch that was outside to anybody with eyeballs.
Dude, that was strike 3 to me. Or at least way too close to take.
http://www.brooksbaseball.net/.....type=3.gif
The strike zone clearly disagrees with you.
With this Ump especially still way too close to take.
We get on Robby all the time for swinging at bad pitches. Had he swung and miss at it would you have been defending him that it was “too close to take.” I highly doubt it, especially with the emotion you post with from time to time I could easily see you tearing Robbie a new asshole for swinging and missing at that exact same pitch to end the game. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that you’d be wrong in doing so, I’d probably be right there with you BECAUSE IT WAS OFF THE PLATE.
Dude, I post emotionally, but I’ll tell you now my immediate reaction was “Strike!” and if I could have blamed the umps, I would have.
Nobody here is very happy, huh?
PREDICTION: We’re winning the division by exactly one game, and it will never waver once.
You know, I really do like that we get playoff baseball in September even though we couldn’t pull this one off.
Nunez cost the yankees the game
the umps cost them the game. it’s hard to work around that kind of umpiring.
At least Baltimore lost.
+1
Magic number’s down to 10.
Fitting, umps decided early they were gonna be a factor. Sad a Nunez error is the difference, but yanks still in first, now they must go to minn and not let up
Cano’s AB

Ichiro’s AB
http://www.brooksbaseball.net/.....type=3.gif
Fuck this umpire.
Wonder what swishes looked like when he got rung and the a rod low one
Yanks were no match for Nuñez and the Umps.
2 for 3 against a team currently holding a playoff spot is pretty good. hopefully they got their swagger back and rip through the twins and toronto and boston. as good as the Os have played, they can’t sweep the rest of the season, or lets hope not.
The umpires flat out stole this game from the Yankees.
That called 3rd strike on Cano was at least 4 inches outside. Not even close. And it was just one of at least 5 or 6 times that the Yankees were completely screwed out of an at bat, many of which came with runners on base.
Kuroda did not even come close to getting the same pitches. I don’t think he got that pitch once in the entire game, and the A’s got it at least 10 times with many different pitchers on the mound.
The call at first base in front of Pennington’s HR was one of the worst of the entire season. That run was huge in this game. Swisher called out on strikes with 2 on in the 6th in a pitch in the other batter’s box was crushing as well.
Words like cheated, stolen, and robbed are the only ways to describe today’s game from a Yankees standpoint. Flat out disgraceful.
Here we go…
http://www.brooksbaseball.net/.....type=7.gif
that’s horrible.
At least the O’s lost.
IT HAPPENS!?!?!?!?!?!
Shut up, please, Joe.
vestibrook is apparently trying to have a reputation on par with angel hernandez, balkin’ bob, and jerry meals.
***estabrook. pardon
get his name right, he wants the reputation, he wants to be a house hold name.
him and sam pearce
When an official effects the outcome of a meaningful game late in the season and there is no consequences for it you know the system is broken. MLB has let the Umpires Union become to strong. There is no system to make sure they are using the best available umpires and no checks and balances when umpires blow calls. It cost the Yankees what could be a meaningful game at the end of the season, and that’s disgusting.
The two games we got screwed on at this point are huge. I have never seen such biased ball/strike calls like we got today. It’s unbelievable, literally.
5-1 in game threads. :/
don’t worry. in my first game thread, i ended the 10 game win streak this year.
I was 5-0!
I don’t like blaming too many losses on the officiating, because that’s weaksauce. That’s what Laker fans do all the time.
BUT
It’s fucking INSANE how many at-bats were simply taken out of the Yanks hands this game, solely based on shitty umpiring.
that was strike 3 against robinson… cano sucks.. the chance of him getting a big hit is about as probable as NY haveing another tornado thsi year…
move crapo down in the order he can get 2 meaningless hits, smile, run 1/2 ass to first and all will be well.
donaldson was out at first not even close, obviously the ump fucking up that call hurt.. nunez cannot field bottom line….
arod, cano, grandy, swisher, the whole crew stink when it counts… tell michale kay the moron the reason they boo aroid is he is the highest paid player in baseball and 2009 was a while ago, so enough with the 2009 talk. arod hs sucked for 3 years, cano has sucked this year… the guy should have 115 rbi’s in his sleep he will wind up with about 85, and none of the moron broadcasters even mention it………
Three years is a while ago…. so we can’t talk about 2009……… but you can slip…. “aroid” ….in there even though he admitted to using PED’s literally a decade ago…………………………………………………
No true supporter of the Yankees would call him “ARoid.” So I think we’ve figured out Stewie’s secret: he’s actually a Red Sox fan.
Isn’t that right Stewie? Do you have a poster of the Laser Show in your bedroom?
………………………………rbis………………………………………………..ike davis…………………………………..aroid………………………..throw a parade…………………………………overpaid chokers………………………….cano sucks…………………………….unclutch……………..
