Game 156: North of the Border
ByOnly one road series left to go, and it begins tonight in Toronto. The Yankees open this four-game set against the Blue Jays with a two-game lead over the idle Orioles for the AL East, and a four-game lead over the Angels for the second wildcard spot. You’ve got to clinch a playoff berth before you can clinch the division though, and there’s a chance the Yankees will secure a postseason spot as soon as tomorrow if things break right. I hope they do. Here’s the starting nine…
SS Derek Jeter
RF Ichiro Suzuki
DH Alex Rodriguez
2B Robinson Cano
1B Nick Swisher
CF Curtis Granderson
C Russell Martin
LF Raul Ibanez
3B Jayson Nix
RHP Ivan Nova
Tonight’s game is scheduled to start a little after 7pm ET and can be seen on YES. Enjoy.

When is Gardy gonna get some playing time?
He played an inning yesterday. Curry just said Gardy is swinging the bat good in sessions.
As soon as he admits what he did wrong.
I like Ichiro in the two hole, he’s gonna go 5-5 tonight. I got a feeling.
Yep. I said this (well the first part) about three weeks ago when Swish was slumping there.
i’m required by Internet law to make a twss joke about “liking Ichiro in the two hole”
Fair enough.
Shades of the Upside Elder.
If Nova shits the bed today I recommend he be done till next year, his terribleness isn’t a SSS anymore.
DOes anyone think the Red Sox will just roll over for the O’s in order to try and screw the Yanks?
If Bobby V’s job wasn’t on the line, he would prob manage with less urgency, at the same time if he players want him gone, finishing in last place will help that cause.
No. The O’s are division rivals too, how many of the players on that roster really give a crap about the Yankees?
Besides the Red Sox have their own score to settle with the Orioles.
Bosox starters versus O’s Cook, Doubront, Stewart.
Vs Yankees Buchholtz, Lester, Dice-K
After last year, I think the Red Sox really hate the O’s and would love to prevent them from winning the division. They may not hate them as much as they hate the Yankees, but I don’t think they’d enjoy losing to the O’s at all.
Not that the fans reflect what the team thinks, but when the Nick Punto trade was made, many fans were talking about knocking the Orioles out of the playoffs as the only thing left for them to play for this season. (This was before the Yankees had blown their division lead, but still.)
Red Sox rotation v. O’s Cook, Doubront, Stewart
Red Sox rotation v Yankees, Buchholz, Lester, Dice-K
We get the has-beens, they get the never-was.
Still more worried about the guys we are facing.
Posada + Montero = Piss (hands) Christ???
No C-Dick?! I call BS!
Strike zone already looks awful.
Can’t be that bad. ARod walked.
At least one of those should have been a strike.
John Sterling- “I’m not going to bore you with the numbers, but that’s mostly because the Yankees don’t hit Morrow well.”
Jose Bautista: 4th outfielder, until he gets to Toronto and becomes Superman.
Edwin Encarnacion: Average 3rd baseman until he gets to Tornto…and goes on to become Superman.
Now I’m not saying…I’m just saying what Skip Bayless said about Derek.
Maybe the water in Canada is better?
Like it gets better the further you go North?
Mexico: Drink Water and Die
US: Drink water and live normally
Canada: Drink water and turn superhuman?
Makes sense to me. Guess my next vacation is to Canada. Who needs a real job if I can hit 40+ homers in the MLB?
Shit, just give me 20HR power and below average catching ability…even teams like the Yankees would give me 130 games a year *cough*Russel Martin*cough*
Bautista has been tested over and over again.
As for Encarnacion, he has been there 3 years hitting, 21 homers, 17 homers, and now 41 homers.
Could be the stealing of signals. Interested in road numbers for both.
Kind of making a joke here Greg. Don’t get your panties in a bunch.
You never know.
Whether or not your panties are in a bunch? I hope I’ll never know.
I just always assume they are.
Only when it comes to umps and refs.
Homers for Encarnacion:
2012: 23 home, 19 away
2011: 14 home, 3 away
2010: 7 home, 14 away
I don’t think there’s anything there.
And for Bautista:
2012: 11 home, 16 away
2011: 20 home, 23 away
2010: 33 home, 21 away
Alright. Just wondering.
Wow, he still nearly hit 30HRs even w/ all the time he missed this year. That’s impressive.
I can see what Nice meant by the ump.
Nova’s not getting the border calls that Morrow is so far, according to gameday.
Kay referenced WAR???
Bullshit. Until I see video tape complete with a transcription of the reference of WAR I refuse to believe it!!
Yes but he doesn’t know what it is.
They must be using Canadian microphones in that YES booth. The voices sound strange. Or maybe it’s my ears.
Morrow so far is feasting on the outside border.
He slowed down and could have got that. Let’s make them pay.
Outfield fly rule
nope nope nope
Did everybody hear the good news today???
No?
http://www.thepostgame.com/blo.....ral-season
As the Dark Lord of All, I totally approve of this.
Thought you would.
Off-Yankee-topic, but still baseball related.
Got some cool news at work today. Apparently PNC is holding a little regional competition among branches in the DC area for the next two weeks, starting Monday. To celebrate the Nationals bringing the postseason back to DC, we are allowed to decorate our branches with baseball/Nats stuff for two weeks. The best decorated branch wins a night in a luxury box for a Nats playoff game for the whole branch.
Needless to say, I am leading an all-out effort to make this happen.
As well you should.
I was digging throw our supply closet today, looking for stuff I could use. I found a cardboard cutout of 2 connected speech bubbles that each say some random thing about investments. My plan? Get a giant cut out of Bryce Harper on the wall and have the speech bubbles coming from his mouth. I will then bring out two lines to cover the banking mumbo-jumbo already on there. It will read as follows:
“Are the Nats going to the World Series?”
“That’s a clown question, bro.”
Love it.
Totally agree.
I have a Strasburg terzee if that helps.
dude…go all out: Fat Heads, baseballs, if there’s no dress code, National Jerseys mandatory, paint the walls red if possible. Full 9.
Can’t wear Jerseys, but I have one idea posted above. Also going to do a collage of the Nats season to cover one wall. Behind the teller line we’re going to have cutouts of fans and a scoreboard above them (since it’s in the back of the building, like the edge of a stadium). A few other things we’re toying with too.
Burn an effigy of the Phillie Phanatic in front of the branch.
Burn an effigy of the Phillie Phanatic in front of the branch.
Heh I would enjoy that even if there were no contest.
Wait, how did Hawkins lose the no-hitter, but the 8IP CG remains a stat?
There’s a double standard.
How about the non-CG SHO, if you want a confusing one.
Nova has a hellacious curve tonight.
That was easy.
I was just thinking: If you guys could be Alex during his Rangers years (an all time great making shit-tons of money but on a last place team) OR a healthy Brett Gardner (serviceable player, making a decent amount of money compared to a non-pro athlete, but a chance to be on a World Series contender every year) which would you choose?
Give me the money so I don’t have to worry about working in the future.
Money and talent, no contest.
I would say Gardner because your legacy is cemented wihtout the attention of superstardom
What legacy? Being a role player on (as of now) 1 World Series winner?
Winning a World series.
Telling your kids that I was a champion.
Devil’s Advocate: Alex is going to be able to tell his kids I’m still in the top 5 of Homers, RBI’s, hits, basically every offensive category ever.
While neglecting the little quibble of steroids.
Hey man…my legacy, if I never get busted I get to write it.
But you admitted it.
Would he have if he was still in Texas? The circumstances are all different.
That’s only if I’d take the same career path as Alex did, in this hypothetical you played out your career in Texas.
OK, but what’s to say that report that he was on that list of people who tested positive in 2003 still wouldn’t have been leaked if he was with Texas?
See, we begin to presuppose too much.
Sentimental crap, fundamentally.
Making sure that my kids can have advantages I didn’t have (presumably) would be more important to me.
You are still getting paid substantial money for a working person.
But probably not enough to do what I mentioned.
Catch: The contract is well into the end of your career, so you cant try to take a victory lap with a Yankees/Braves/Red Sox type team.
top 5 all time WWF theme. probably top 2 actually
Hahaha, I actually agree, I was just trying to make it a little bit of a tougher decision.
The best things in life are free
But you can give them to the birds and bees
Now give me money
(That’s what I want)
That’s what I want)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGWJ9f1rIio
idk if anybody’s gonna get this reference, but one of my favorite movies.
Hmm. I don’t have that on my Movies I Have Seen list, and I’m pretty sure I’ve seen all of it. Maybe not start to finish in one sitting.
But I don’t like that movie much now. Looking back I find all of those kids whiny and stupid.
I just really like Lucas cause he makes no sense. Like his personality is just so…odd. Plus Liv Tyler is sexy as fuck in it.
Yea but she’s basically a wannabe groupie. I don’t find that all too appealing.
Doesn’t Renee Zellweger tell her off by saying that at least she doesn’t hide what she is (admitting she’s a slut)?
Yeah, that’s because Liv’s character is a closet speed freak (which is how she’s able to study enough to get straight A’s and gets into Harvard)
Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Even though that wasn’t a choice, you are some how correct.
To think that when 3rd Rock from the Sun got cancelled, I never expected to hear from him again.
Then I saw Brick and I was like, “He’s gonna be around for awhile.”
He’s my look alike.
wait…you look like Joesph Gordon-Levitt?! I’m so fucking jealous of you.
and your name is Joe?! Holy Shit, if I were you I’d go out and actively try to convince drunk girls that I am in fact Joesph Gordon-Levitt.
That’s what my friends brother says. We have similar eyes, and if I show people a pic of me as a little kid we’re identical twins.
I’m not really outgoing though. Like I’ll talk to a girl, but I have no clue if I’m attractive. I personally don’t think so. I’m kinda down on myself on a personal level. haha.
Dude, I will tell you right now that if you look like Joesph Gordon-Levitt you are not only attractive, but you’re VERY attractive.
(raises eyebrow)
…Joesph Gordon Levitt is a very attractive man. That’s all I’m going to say on the matter
I’m probably a poor man’s Levitt.
I look like that. Minus the hair-style.
http://www.film.com/wp-content.....olomon.jpg
Dude, get your self confidence in check and you will be chest deep in freshman girls at Rutgers (just use protection, because Slutgers is more than just a nickname.)
If only I could get it in check now.
I’m actually kinda depressed about that fact that RU is accepting kids with 1700 SAT scores and not 1500…
So I’m kinda fucked.
Jersey Shore wannabes?
1700 and 1500? What the hell, did they change the scoring system? I thought the max was 1600?
Pat,
It’s out of 2400 now. There’s a writing part.
Pat, they added a writing section it’s now out of 2400
Math: 800
Verbal: 800
Written: 800
Oh, that’s right. I did hear about that but totally forgot it. I still don’t really see how you can judge writing on a point system like the SAT’s, but what do I know?
My best SAT score was 1320. That was good enough for Notre Dame. Not bragging, just saying.
Damn dude that’s a score to be proud of. Mine was the first year they added the writing, so most colleges didn’t look at it, I got a 1210 on the old system, and a 1680 on the new score. I only got a 470 on the writing, which I thought was bullshit, because I’m a very good writer but I can’t slap dash a 5 paragraph essay in 20 minutes.
Exactly my point. Writing can’t be timed like that. It’s also so subjective, so it’s really bullshit to be on what’s essentially a standardized test.
Exactly. I write for websites at my age and I got a 420 writing. I was beyond mad.
Hm. I got A-Rod. Being on a shitty team would kind of suck, but that’s just so, so much money. Maybe if the players were on less extreme opposite ends of the spectrum, I would change my mind.
“maybe if the players were on less extreme oppisites..i would change my mind” but then it would be an easier decision =P
Fair enough. I just mean if I was a very good player on a last place team (instead of an epic one) as opposed to a decent player on a WS winner…I’d take the decent player on the WS winner. I like Gardner, but he’s a little too much of a role player for me, if I were to choose to be him. I’d rather be the household name than everyone would be like “holy shit…you were one of the greatest short stops to ever live.” Assuming he would have stayed at short in Texas.
I found it cool that between 2010-2011 Gardner was pretty much the same value as Pujols in fWAR.
Cool, sure. But Gardners WAR values are heavily inflated by his defense (and those statistics are very flawed). Also, Gardner’s fielding in WAR is being compared to other left fielders (not centerfielders). So of course a centerfielder playing left is going to get a huge bonus there.
Yea, I know. UZR needs 3 years of data. But I hate UZR anyway. Though, it doesn’t take SABR to tell Gardy plays amazing defense.
For sure. Gardner is amazing out there. I just think that it can too heavily influence WAR calculations. That’s why you typically see Mike and the gang use wOBA when discussing a player’s value.
And wRC+.
That’s fine. wOBA is the most concrete offensive stat.
Would you rather be in a tropical paradise? OR be eaten alive by sharks?!
This reminds me of something I saw on an ESPN comment board a week or so ago. People were asking fantasy start questions, and some people began asking things like, “Would you rather watch Chyna’s sex tape or drive off a cliff?”
OR Kanye’s sex tape?
Gardner. Gardner, at least, is a GOOD player. Later in life I can cheerfully talk about how I was a pretty good player on a first place WS winning Yankee team.
A-Rod is all time flat-out awesome, but being in last place each year would dampen it for me.
This has Yankees gon’ lose written all over it.
No score in the third inning…but sure, jump off the ledge already.
Yankees don’t hit Morrow like they didn’t hit Burnett.
4-2 with a 4.08 ERA career.
Anything can happen. How many games is a starter on point for 3-5 innings before an implosion. Just watch the game.
Sign Morrow when he opts out!
wait a sec…
I was just thinking the same thing. Morrow’s making the look silly. Hope they turn it around before the superNova 5th inning implosion-Ivan PLEASE prove me wrong.
Why? Nova looks sharp and I’ll take our offense after a trip or two through the lineup.
Hey I hope you are correct.
Nova does look good so far. Great curve tonight. See what happens.
See what happened?
Is Kay calling Morrow, “Tomorrow?”
It’s stupid…..and annoying
I love how every pitch is “little” for Flaherty.
“Showing a little slider, there’s a little change-up”. What constitutes a big pitch for him?
That’s Leiter.
Holy shit, you’re right.
I could swear Flaherty’s like that anyway, but I didn’t pick up on Leiter’s voice tonight. I blame my general tiredness for that.
Only swings or “cuts” are big.
“Takes a nice big swing.”
“That’s a big cut right there.”
Pitchers shouldn’t be allowed to wear “23″
It’s disrespectful to Donnie Baseball
There is only disrespect to Flanny, no body else can be disrespected-Buck Showalter.
And remember, Plouffy, I brought you into this world and I can take you out of it.
Bill Cosby.
So you’re like Vader and Plouffy is like Luke?
No, I was making reference to something Michael once said to Dwight on The Office.
Also, and I know I’ll be mocked for this, I find it funny that the clip is entitled, “Luke, I am your father,” when that is not what he says.
I don’t think you’ll be mocked by anybody but trolls or people who haven’t seen the movie. Anybody who has seen the movie knows that’s not the quote.
Well, vicki called me a nerd the other night for posting a clip from Star Trek: First Contact where Picard says, “The line must be drawn here!”
I wasn’t making a Star Trek reference so much as quoting the line.
Amotherfuckingmen.
why are you nibbling against Gose.
Gameday had three probably strikes called balls in that atbat
My eyes told me he should have attacked the zone.
He did. The ump didn’t call it that way.
Throwing pitches just outside of the strikezone isn’t attacking the zone.
Well done, Ivan.
Yep I was correct.
Yeah, I guess we just got bitten by the infamous third inning walk-off.
No you weren’t. It’s still the third inning!!! They’ve come back from far bigger deficits than 2 runs with 6 innings to play.
Ouch.
Great hitting by Lawrie. That ball was out of the strike zone and up.
And away too.
Squirt. Shit the bed.
The home run you could live with. It’s walking the guy he was 1-2 on just ahead of it that really burns.
Up up and away…
Don’t blame Nova for either. Gameday had 3 of those balls in the strike zone to Gose.
Lawrie just hit the ball well for a ball that was out of the strike zone up and away.
Enough with the justifications!
http://www.brooksbaseball.net/......php?img1=..%2FpfxVB%2Fcache%2Ffastmap.php-pitchSel%3Dall%26game%3Dgid_2012_09_27_nyamlb_tormlb_1%26sp_type%3D2%26s_type%3D7.gif&img2=..%2FpfxVB%2Fcache%2Ffastmap.php-pitchSel%3Dall%26game%3Dgid_2012_09_27_nyamlb_tormlb_1%26sp_type%3D3%26s_type%3D7.gif
Which one’s were in the zone again? Point them out. Please. MAYBE one was borderline.
It’s not the umps fault, it’s the guy on the mound who has the #9 hitter with no power and great speed 0-2 and walks him
Link didn’t work, take 2
http://www.brooksbaseball.net/.....type=7.gif
I see two or three Nova pitches that are are on the border of the typical LHH K zone. The problem is we don’t know which pitch is which.
Brooks will not let you check individual AB’s until after the game is over.
However you KEEP saying 3 pitches IN THE ZONE… you are looking at a plot which has 2 marginal pitches on the edge, all game.
It’s just another of your justifications of a negative outcome.
Game Day had 2 of them on the border and one seemed to be in the zone.
In relations, I think the triangle that is down and in to the lefty is the one that Gameday said was in the zone. And if you look along that border you see a Toronto pitch that was called a strike.
And AGAIN for the 4th time… gameday is an approximation
What part of this can you not seemingly understand?
See my above post for comaprison
I’m done looking at your posts…. there was 1 or 2 marginal pitches.
You keep talking about a pitch IN THE ZONE and others that were “strikes”.
I get that you can never be wrong but let it go. If it sounds any better, you are less than right on this.
So you don’t trust the Gameday strikezone?
By the way your link doesn’t fully work.
No. It’s not accurate. It messes up height and it tends to cluster pitches just out of the zone left and right closer to the zone than they actually are.
That’s a hilarious sentence:
“…since being suspended for having a homophobic slur on his eye black.”
If someone didn’t know any better, they would be flabbergasted at the insanity of that phrase.
Crazy indeed. I couldn’t believe anyone would be dumb enough to actually do that in the first place. I’m still baffled.
It’s just those Latin players.
/Salty’d
3-2 curve against the 9 hitter. I mean, really? Deserve that 2-run shot
If you saw the Gameday Strikezone that I did…
Again, please stop. Gameday is an approximation.
This strikezone is out of control. Nova didn’t get those pitches.
I think the answer to the trivia question is 7.
Nice bit of hitting Robbie.
LOL
Motherfucker.
well…fuck balls.
They’re slippery.
What a terrible job by Cano on the basepaths. Come on dude, if you make it to third base even you can go home on a sac fly, and if that ball isn’t caught and you’re in between first and second you’re STILL probably going to make it home anyway.
Yea the replay confirms that Cano is a terrible baserunner.
I thought he went halfway and then loafed back to first
There was a post earlier that said Robbie was still productive amid slump. And then he runs right into an out.
That play doesn’t invalidate the post.
Yes network is trying to give me a seizure.
cano never could run the bases well.
as i say all the time and am ridiculed Cano is a overrated piece of blank… 80 rbi’s end the friggin story.
arod had a especially good last AB. I especially like the 0 and 2,watch a strike right down the middle without swinging… Ooops. I cannot say anything bad about the great arod… another 5 years of watching him play at $25 + mill a year will be a unbearable site…..
..jeter..can’t field for shit..clueless joe puts him out there anyway…
..ichiro too..terrible job by cash..two good weeks doesn’t make up for the out making earlier..throw a parade…
No parades?
Hey Joe, this is stuart a. He’s our own little bucket of joy. I know you’re cranky, grandpa stuart, but be nice and shake Joe’s hand.
To much proper sentence structure, not enough ellipses. NEEDS MORE ELLIPSES!!!
Seeing you post is “a unbearable site” too.
Robinson Cano RBI total in 2010: 109
Robinson Cano RBI total in 2011: 118
Yet stuart the idiot chooses only to focus on this one year, like that’s the whole story.
Nice to meet you man. Heard great thangs aboutcha.
just got home… watching the boxscore, Nova still sucks, right?
Not as shitty as his last outing, though that’s not saying much.
Hung a curve after an 0-2 walk. Other than that, he looks good.
This anecdote on the radio is so astonishingly boring I can’t even repeat it.
You actually listen? I kind of tune it out till I hear the crack of a bat or the crowd get excited at this point.
I have the TV on in the other room, but I’m working and can’t watch too intently.
Anyway, Suzyn just told an interesting story about how Gene Monahan was “the best at repairing gloves.”
Why can’t it be a jewish holiday every day?
Alesmith IPA, in case anyone’s wondering.
Score some runs. I don’t care how you do it. The stretch run is no time for intracacies.
Wife and child are out of town, yet I am here with you. That’s the kind of loser, er, guy, I am.
Never had Alesmith. Micro brew in NYC?
San Diego. I’d never heard of it either. Came well recommended. Very good.
My three favorite IPAs are still:
1) Dogfish 90 Minute
2) Ithica Flower Power
3) Cigar City Jai Alai IPA
You ever had Riverhead’s IPA? It’s a small brewery in Lambertville, NJ. One of my personal favorites. Also Magic Hat’s IPA. Love that stuff.
Eh sorry, that should be “Riverhorse”.
The first two on that list are incredible. Never had the third.
In response to your selections, I’ve never had 2 and 3, but I love me some Dogfish.
Cigar City’s out of Tampa. Only good beer I have EVER seen come out of Florida, and they are VERY good.
I *think* I’ve had Riverhorse. Lagunitas would have made the list.
I prefer Riverhorse’s Lager personally (if that’s your thing), but their IPA is really good to.
I do prefer lagers myself. Hefeweizens might be my favorite though. Magic Hat Circus boy is still my favorite.
R-Tils, if you ever go to Vermont, do yourself a favor and go to a bar. Any bar. Get a tall glass of Sidewinder. It’s a pale ale brewed in Vermont, and they don’t bottle or distribute at all. You literally can only get it on tap in Vermont bars, but it’s one of my all time favorites.
Next time I go camping, I’ll check it out. Lots of great stuff up there.
I don’t know when it was when IPA’s just starting clicking with me, but they’re absolutely my favorites.
Just finished a six pack of Bar Harbour Blueberry Ale from Maine which tasted more like fresh blueberries than it had any right to.
Like I said below, it’s Switchback, for reference.
If you like blueberry beer, I’ll go ahead and plug more Vermont beer. Long Trail’s Blackberry Wheat is excellent as well.
Man I love beer. This conversation is making me thirsty. Too bad all I have is Bacardi.
Love me some Long Trail. Very big in CT.
You ever have Long Trail’s Double Bag? Really strong, but tasty and delivers a buzz very quickly.
No, but I’ll be in CT tomorrow.
Jesus I’m an ass. Sorry R-Tils, long day. I have no idea why I said “Sidewinder”. The name of the beer is Switchback.
Good thing I’m not heading to Vermont anytime soon.
Brooklyn Local 1 is still my favorite beer of all time, period.
Never had it, but my dad did one time when he and my mom went into the city to see the Botanical Gardens. He raved about it.
Brooklyn Botanical Gardens? I’m a walk from there.
It’s great beer. I think I’ve told the story of how I spent the ’09 WS, but I had a double version of Local 1 that was literally the best beer I’ve ever put in my mouth.
Longest and hardest hit single of the year.
this offense
Playing against Brandon Morrow in Toronto really is Mission Impossible.
Tried to tell em.
They wouldn’t listen.
Because Brandon Morrow’s numbers in the Bronx are friggen horrible.
You didn’t make note of that at all.
Morrow at New Yankee Stadium. 1-2 with a 6.84 ERA
Means he’s 3-0 against the Yankees in Toronto.
If my math is right. 3-0 with a 1.67 ERA against the Yankees in Toronto.
1.28 coming into the game.
1.13 right now.
Seriously, this game is as boring as fuck.
Glad the offense showed up tonight.
I hate these playoff promos. That Springsteen song keeps making me think I’m about to hear “This is our country.”
Better than that “Baseball, hotdogs, apple pie, and Chevy” bullshit.
1) That’s debatable.
2) Isn’t it funny how the “This is our country” and “Baseball, etc…” ads are both for Chevrolet?
Springsteen > Mellencamp
Well, yea, but shitty song for TV ad is shitty song for TV ad.
CGSO is inevitable.
Can I be a post-team control Brett Gardner?
Casey Janssen was pretty shaky against the O’s. If it comes to that, I’m hoping it’s the same thing.
Sterling is paying even less attention to this game than he usually does.
Yeah, that’s why I’m happily enjoying a live look in right now.
about to blow the game
Well fuck. This doesn’t look good.
Bad Nova, Bad D.
This is just a lovely game being played tonight.
Fucking lovely.
Encarnacion with the kill shot, this game is toast.
Yeah like I was saying.
This game had Yankee loss written all over it.
Nova isn’t good. Morrow owns the Yankees. Take the next 3 please.
Here we go. A little small ball, Nova gets rattled and hangs one and the ballgame is ova. Fuck
And that’ll be it. Thanks, Joe. Os within a game now. Why wasn’t Phelps brought in? There is no room for error! Nova has to go!
I can’t believe you’re actually blaming Joe for this.
Unbelievable.
EDDARDWORLD! I’ll buy the tickets, it’s RAB vacation time!
Is it fucking raining and I haven’t noticed? There’s still four innings to be played. I don’t care how cutesy your “but the game is over” shit is.
Yes, this is the IPA talking. It’s one of the big bottles.
Let the IPA talk. I am enjoying our beer discussion.
Nova is garbage.. joe should have walked the only above average hitter they have.
And the game is virtually over.
Take finger, er, meat cleaver. Shove it up ass.
Wow, fuck Ivan Nova. Please don’t given him another start this season and keep him off the postseason roster.
Gah, Nova is horrible.
It’s such a joke that Nova is starting important games over Phelps
Really? David Phelps has shown himself to lose it in key moments. The Orioles game that he pitched comes to mind.
And then Phelps threw two excellent outings after that against the Sox and Jays.
Inferior opponents? Yes. But those were big games for the Yankees, they were fairly close games, and Phelps made sure he didn’t put the Yankees in an untenable spot in either case.
He couldn’t be worse than Nova’s general shittiness.
And that’s why I think he will be starting against the Red Sox in the last series of the year.
I get the sentiment. He looked awfully good that first start back, though, enough to buy him some goodwill. I’d lean towards not giving him another start but, really, do you trust Phelps THAT much?
Neither pitcher is what you’d call a sure thing. Don’t over-value Phelps.
Having Phelps available for the next six games will help more than having him make one start against a bad team.
My dad thinks Nova lacks mental toughness. Anyone have an opinion on that?
My opinion is he sucks period.
He lacks command of every single pitch he throws. He either misses on the heart of the plate or in the dirt.
I understand that…like AJ when he has a bad inning it snowballs. Even Hughes is decent at limiting base runners. Very rarely this season do you see him get into situations that he got into the other night…he gives up a long ball (or two) and refocuses. Once You get Nova thinking about runners on base he’s toast.
The regression of Ivan Nova might end up being a key reason if the Yankees don’t win the division. Remember that game against Baltimore when we scored runs off Tillman and then Nova gave them right back.
there’s no point in going to the pen now. Morrow always dominates the Yankees, especially at home. They might as well leave Nova’s sorry ass in the game to throw 130 pitches and save the pen for tomorrow.
Doesn’t it say in the binder to always have someone up when Ivan the terrible is pitching? Good news is Nova won’t be out there again.
Nova to the pen come October.
Not the Yankee pen, I hope.
Wow, Nova’s set the Yankees single season record for extra base hits allowed.
Hell, there’s two shockers there:
1) Worse than AJ each of the past two seasons, and we all know AJ Burnett got hammered a number of times in 2010 and 2011.
2) Nova missed three-four weeks with the shoulder injury, and still broke the record.
Tip of the cap, Ivan.
Wag of the finger, more like.
“2) Nova missed three-four weeks with the shoulder injury, and still broke the record.”
That is quite the feat.
Jeez, I flipped over to the football game to see if the fans would give a positive ovation to the real referees. What do I see? That fucking Cee-Lo song which is the loudest piece of shit I think I’ve ever heard.
Why does every primetime NFL game have to have an intro song? Just because of fucking Hank Fucking Williams Jr.? That Faith Hill (or whoever the fuck it is) song on NBC is shit, and this Cee-Lo song on NFL Network is infinitely worse!
Stop the insanity!!!!!!!!!
Rant over. Maybe.
wait…they had Cee-Lo playing live. Did they watch South Park last night?!
It wasn’t live. Pre-recorded shit.
Are you just noticing pretty much everything about TV broadcasts of football is loud, over the top and annoying?
No. This theme song was loud beyond belief. There’s literally nothing in the game that is louder than that.
Smart move, Joe. Ain’t no time to fuck around.
CRIMINAL to take him out with out at least going out and TALKING to him first. GAWD!!
After the 4 runs scored? No way. He should have taken Nova out after the bunt. 1st and 3d 1 out and Nova’s rattled. Bad combo.
I actually considered that for a second.
#IPA
A Nova explodes and turns to dust. We just witnessed it. Ta ta for now, Ivan.
You have no idea how much it would amuse me if the real refs blow a huge call tonight.
I do actually. It would also amuse me greatly.
That thought crossed my mind too. The reaction would be interesting.
Booo!
You want the other guys back?
NO1 NO1
Kay explaining WAR. Boom.
What is it good for? Absolutely nothing. Say it again, y’all.
Except the part where he apparently gets to decide what a replacement player means. “I think it’s an average MLB player. That’s what I think.”
I like that part. “I have no idea what I”m talking about so I think it means this.”
Offense needs to show some life here. Even one run would be helpful.
it’s one awful AB after another.. dude works the count full and pops out in foul territory on a weak hack. Pathetic.
An awful at bat would be swinging at the first pitch and popping into foul territory.
Yes, that’s the only bad AB possible in a game of baseball.
Now it’s shit like that which drives me crazy.
Down 4-0, leading off the inning, WHY is Nix swinging 3-1? That’s insanity, and in this case bailed out Morrow, who already doesn’t need any extra help out there.
Shit like that already makes a tough game to win, even tougher.
Isn’t that what you’re supposed to do?
Get to 3-1 and look for a pitch.
In that situation, I would think taking a pitch would suffice.
You don’t need extra base hits there. You just need baserunners, period, and a 3-1 count has all the pressure on the pitcher.
Morrow’s biggest weakness is that he’s never been an impeccable strike pitcher. He’ll give up his fair share of walks. Bailing him out 3-1 just makes it tougher to get any of those walks.
Right, It’s pretty simple. Down 4 runs you take on 3-1. Make the pitcher throw a strike.
Get to 3-1 and look for a GOOD pitch.
Nix swung at a pitch that probably wasn’t even a strike.
Ok then. I’m not watching the game.
Even John and Suzyn criticized him for that.
Of course, Jeter did the exact same thing and they didn’t say a word about it.
Ichiro could not have gotten 2 better pitches to hit..yet he took both
That’s always the dilemma with being a patient offense.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a comment form you that made sense.
Okay, as long as they’re talking about this on TV – I think the playoff system is crap. They should just seed the teams to give the two best teams a chance to meet in the World Series. The leagues mean nothing to me. Does that make me a bad person?
Kinda.
I don’t mind the extra wild card. Implementing it this year was stupid, because the schedule was already set and there wasn’t time for the extra games. But other than that I like it.
Nova shouldn’t be in the rotation.
He’s not.
The only we ever see Nova again is if they clinch and they need a warm body to run out there next week.
At least Jays pitchers ease up after tonight.
So it seems, but we still don’t play well in Canada.
Well this game ain’t looking so hot.
Nova v. Morrow. Saw this one coming.
“base hit through the left side” get used to hearing that for a while with Lowe and the artificial turf.
Offense has looked weak so far, but lets remember 4 runs for this offense is nothing, one inning and this will be a different ball game. Have faith
Here we have the rare species “optimism.” Approach quietly, for it scares easily.
Nice. Now some runs, si vous plait.
ietc
Boy is Cano a bad baserunner. Slide, dude, slide.
If Cano got thrown out there it would have been the epitome of lazy Dominican.
Cano has got his scary side,
Robbie WTF is wrong with you chief?
2-0, swing at a pitch way out of the strikezone.
To be fair, he tried to hold up.
I like how Robbie just saunters into 2nd. Try sliding and diving like Nix.
Come on, Swish.
Guys…what the fuck happened to this year. I feel like the trade deadline was like a week ago and now my birthday is in like 3 days…
The season is way too short.
I’ve been out of work for 3 months now. My last day still feels like it was only a few days ago.
Fraying bootstraps? (I keeed.)
You best be gettin’ ready to celebrate hard.
Nah…I’m probably not gonna do anything. Not a huge fan of my birthday.
Fair enough. 23, right? At least get drunk and comment with us.
Yep, the big 23..just about as fun as 20. I’ll probably pick up a six pack or something…I also invited a friend to a movie w/ both want to see (not a good enough friend where she’ll know it’s my b-day until facebook tells her) but she hasn’t responded yet.
Ploufferz trying to get laid on his birthday? My most recent birthday was the first one I haven’t gotten laid on in like 5 years. It was depressing.
Ha, I’d settle for a 10th grade level hook up…I’ve been out of “the game” for so long I’ve forgotten how to play. Please don’t let yourself get to that JJ.
Working on it. Just need my dream girl to realize that I’m going to be a lot more than just her fucking bank teller
Or find the right online dating service.
I feel ya though, Plouffy. Because of the situation I had with my ex, I haven’t needed game since about 2007. One night stands at college parties don’t require game, fun as they may be.
Dusting.
Sit fastball Swish. Everything else is a take 3-1
Wow, harsh strike call.
That was a ball. No question.
Nice AB Swish. Took Ball 4 twice
Gose is a CFer playing LF. His scouting reports rate him as 7 or an 8 arm wise. When a pitcher in school he threw in the upper 90s. Robbie really should know this.
Justice walk. Now knock them in Grandy.
I’m not saying Nova was great shakes out there, but I don’t think he was as bad as some of the comments here suggest. Frankly, the Encarnacion hits were just examples of straight up great hitting. I didn’t think the pitch to Lawrie was bad, either.
You watching the same guy I am? The guy with the 5 ERA, who just set a single-season Yankees record for XBH allowed?
Sounds like you’re referencing the season and not the game. So, are we watching the same game?
His game ERA was 8.
I thought he started out well, but the four run deficit was too much and I didn’t feel it was going to get any better.
No dispute here. Again, not a great outing. But his fastball had movement, the curve was biting. He was a victim of some spotty control and great hitting. He didn’t turn the corner so to speak, but he didn’t pitch as badly as his line suggests.
That’s weird, Curtis struck out.
Wow, Granderson. Three pitches? Really?
can’t wait for Granderson to be gone.
Why the 200 Ks are not compensated for by the 40 HRs
You say that now…
Good point. Probably true. But his WAR went from 5.3 last year to 2.4 this year. I’ll take him with a higher avg less Ks and a few less HRs
2.2 on fangraphs, and the way he’s going, can end under 2.
Native born Torontan, but raised in Montreal?
Poor bastard.
should keep jackson, another trade cashman made that hasn’t worked, granderson is trash
Yes, Yankee fans like you would have been oh-so-patient with him the past couple of years. A guy breaking out three years later? Just move on already.
It’s teddy. Just pretend the screen farted.
They should have kept Jay Buhner as well.
Well, they really should have kept Buhner.
they are going to squander a 2 on, 0 outs opportunity, what’s new?
So why mention it?
To let us know of his opinion.
I think it bears repeating: 2 on nobody out. We get zilch, nada, nichts, niente.
I forgot to mention this earlier. Seeing that CenterStage promo for Selig was annoying. He said something about not wanting to change the game. I wonder what he meant. Because, ya know, he’s added a 2nd wild card and he’s moving a team to the American League for a reason I can’t remember. So was he talking about replay? Because if so it proves what an out of touch idiot he is.
I can’t believe Mike thinks he might be the best commish in MLB history.
I mean, I more or less understand why he said it, but I really don’t see it even slightly.
Mike thinks he is because of how he grew the game abroad (I think). As far as I’m concerned, he’s handled the game here at home terribly. I hate the guy.
And, to that end, Mike’s completely correct. Growing the brand is just as important as anything else of the success of the league, and MLB is more popular than ever.
But as far as how I perceive the game now, with the new wild card system, the limited instant replay, the total lack of accountability the umpires are held to, among others…brutal.
Agreed completely. Also the World Baseball Classic just makes me laugh.
Yep.
Look at the history of MLB commissioners. A lot of shit there. Chandler, Giamatti and Vincent were probably the only decent ones. Landis was a racist; Frick, Eckert and Kuhn were largely ineffectual nothings; and Ueberroth presided over collusion.
I should add that Giamatti would have been a good commissioner had he lived. Did everyone know that he was Paul Giamatti’s father?
We should have a fan app where we can vote on the disputed calls. Now that’s in touch and modern!
Moving a team to the American League makes sense so the leagues/divisions are more balanced. Compare the current AL West to the current NL Central. Next step should be a balanced schedule…
I also think that it’s so that when they decide to expand again in a few years they won’t have to put 2 new teams in the same league.
leadoff double and he doesn’t even get to 3rd. great job guys.
what an offense.
Wow, this offense looks flat. Pop-ups and the weakest of strikeouts.
Yankee Baseball.
Given Morrow’s numbers against the Yankees, I don’t know why all of you are so surprised?
Somehow, you become more annoying the more I drink. YOU’D THINK it’d be the opposite, but apparently not.
I wasnt the only one on here who has been saying this.
This may come as a surprise to you, but I don’t give a shit.
From here until the end of this game thread, you require prior approval before replying to me directly.
#IPA
Drink more. I want to see a Greg vs. R-Tils all out brawl.
And yes, I’m drinking too. Can’t quite shake the college Thirsty Thursdays thing. So entertain me!
But it’s REALLY not entertaining for me. It doesn’t feel like a fair fight.
“It doesn’t feel like a fair fight.”
That’s what would make it entertaining for me.
On the contrary, maybe they’re not surprised just pissed off that it happens so FUCKING much. See how that works?
What happens so fucking much?
Getting shut down in Toronto against Morrow?
Uh, failing to score with no outs and runners on 1st and 2d. That has happened to FUCKING much this year.
ahh, OK. The context of what you replied to confused me.
How’d I know this was gonna be you even before I saw the name?
Because it’s the truth? Or what team have you been watching this season?
He was replying to Greg’s comment.
Leave it be. I’m enjoying the moment where the negative nancies and GREG come full circle.
Is that really your tumblr?
I am truly shocked that the Yankees did not score and that Granderson struck out. They must be in a slump.
That folks is bad baseball right there.
Even I gotta say LOLfense.
If ever something needed to be mercy-killed after an episode and five minutes, it’s “The Office.”
Hopefully Girardi just lets Lowe finish the game so that at least the high leverage guys get another day off.
Let Lowe be Lowe. Tomorrow’s another day.
after sitting on it for a few innings, Phelps needs to take Novas next start.
If I had to make the choice, I’d probably agree, but that’s not a slam dunk by any stretch of the imagination.
I’d be okay with that.
Nova’s next start is meaningless. We’ll have clinched by then, or it is critical, in which case he doesn’t get the start. I just don’t expect to see him again. The way Joe took him out, it looked to me like the end of the run for the young fellow.
It would depend on other factors, including how much he’ll be needed prior to that start. If they make that decision, they pretty much have to make him unavailable out of the pen until that start.
I thought the Yankees would take three of four in Toronto, with tonight’s game being the biggest risk, simply because of Nova and Morrow’s record against the Yankees in Toronto. Hopefully my guess turns out correct. Unfortunately the first part is!
I guess this is Morrow’s obligatory well-pitched game against the Yankees in late August/September.
At this point I kind of hope Aardsma makes an appearance just to see what he has (assuming the game is out of hand).
Maybe the 8th?
I, um, still have hope.
While I appreciate the optimism; you may want to slow down on the drink.
They are in “I’m going to hit a 5run HR on the first pitch that is close” mode.
No shame in being optimistic until the last pitch, no matter how unlikely it is.
I will admit that having both “The Office” and “Project Runway” DVR’ing at the same time turned me away from being able to watch the game. I don’t think I mind too much.
Still, though…..this final season (and, really, last season) are just BRUTAL. There’s always Tim and Heidi waiting on the DVR.
Yes, I love “Project Runway.”
R-Tils I know you’re wifed up..but I’m starting to think I’m not the only person of questionable sexuality on this board. On that note, time to leave work. G’night gentlemen.
I love 80′s and 90′s britpop, Lady Gaga, “Project Runway,” and like to go clothes shopping. I’d wager to say that less than half my friends are heterosexual. I’m about as straight as can be, though.
Is your husband a fan?
Well played.
Yea, The Office was pretty mediocre last season. I thought that last week’s episode was a step in the right direction. I’m trying to retain my optimism since I know that this is the last year, as well as it being the last year for 30 Rock. And I kind of expect it to be the last year for Community, and for some reason, Parks and Recreation, too.
Never got into the latter two, but “The Office” really was one of the last shows that could have me rolling around the floor laughing. I can’t stand the British woman. i REALLY can’t stand these two young guys who just joined the cast. This just isn’t funny anymore. I feel sad for Jim and Pam for still breathing the same air as the rest of them.
Ever read Creed’s Wikipedia page?
Creed is my favorite character. I don’t like a few things they’ve done with some of the characters, but I’m just not going to bail on it.
I agree that Catherine Tate can be grating, but I’m familiar enough with her to know what to expect. I watch Doctor Who, after all.
I won’t bail either, but this is just such the classic “final season,” and not in a good way.
I don’t mind the two new guys so far, though this episode confirms that Clark Duke’s character is a creep. I just hope they don’t do another Andy/Erin breakup, which is the vibe I’m starting to get considering the other new guy.
I feel like I can only watch shows when they are long off the air.
I can’t think of a single show that I watch these days that is in production. I suspect this is because of the fact that I watch sports more than anything else, and also because I like the freedom of not having time slots tied down every night on a weekly basis.
I never watched Seinfeld, Frasier, Cheers, or other popular shows whilst they were in production. I’ve only watched them when they’ve been off the air for a solid decade or so by now.
How does this relate? I’ll probably be more interested in The Office in five-ten years, than I am now. Besides, it’s way too late to get into it now, given that it’s the final season and the lead star is long gone from the show.
I get what you’re saying. It’s risky to get too invested in a show while it’s on the air because you never know when it will be taken off the air. For me, the prime example of that is Deadwood. Got killed before it was finished, for sure. The same thing is probably going to happen to Community.
This game is a good example of why calling a division lead by the number of games ahead in the loss column is silly. Yes, a good team will win more than 50% of its games, but nowhere near 100%.
Has Nix even done anything productive lately? Where’s Nunie?
Nowhere near the field, as it should be.
In the instructional leauge earning how to throw a baseball?
Nice catch. Nine times out of ten that ball falls.
Just got home. Are the Yankees playing tonight?
(I’ll be here all week. Possibly not watching.)
What a shitty game. Glad it only wasted 2 hours of my life.
I always thought Toronto was a dull little place. Can’t blame the team for feeling a little flat having to spend three days there. I haven/t a clue if that is true or not, but I’d like to find a reason for them playing this way in a game they really need. Or maybe I just have to give it To Morrow.
Hey welcome back David
Aardsma spotted.
Welcome aboard, Aardsma. We rolled out the red suck for you.
Okay, so maybe not so sharp.
Good to see Aardsma on the mound at this point.
While they will have spring training to evaluate him, it’s nice to see him facing ML hitters (though I assume they would exercise the 500K option even if he didn’t face anyone this year)
Heck, he’s probably already jumped Logan in the bullpen rotation with his performance tonight!
It’s almost always more Dotel than Strasburg.
Texas won so that should put an end to best record. This is why it would have been nice if Joe didn’t blow that game in Minnesota as we still would have had a 2 game cushion. We cannot get into a 1 game play off for the division.
Last year it wasn’t Verlander who did us in, it was Scherzer and Fister who struck out 9 today. Can’t afford to go into that series without being able to set up our rotation to match them.
Last time I did LSD was probably around ’93.
Scherzer’s all kinds of screwed up physically right now. Who knows if he’ll even be able to pitch in the playoffs.
Whats Aardsma’s repertoire? Is that a splitter or just a hard diving change?
Pretty sure it’s a splitter.
Darren Oliver… so you’re saying there’s a chance….
Didn’t he own us in Texas?
Doesn’t Yankee rule # 346 say they have to at least bring the tying tun to the plate in the 9th?
Only if Axisa calls it first.
Welke sounds like the lollipop guild.
That ump is cranky.
Fuck the umps.
lack·lus·ter/?lak?l?st?r/
Adjective:
Lacking in vitality, force, or conviction; uninspired.
(of the hair or the eyes) Not shining; dull.
That says it all tonight….
They’re not going to make the stretch run easy, are they?
Meh, I never thought they would anyway.
I was starting to have visions of extending the lead a bit, but you’re probably right.
Oh, I always hold out hope that we’ll extend the lead, but it doesn’t surprise me that we’re not.
nice effort. great AB’s, great baserunning, Nova as sharp as ever.
Homeplate ump was awful and a dick.. GOse struck out before the 2 run homer early.
i especially like the long tough ab’s, working Morrow hard…
the softball team lost another game because they did not hit a homer, what a shocker.
this team is doing zilch in the playoffs if they make it. just imagine another 5 years of Arod… That is a horror movie…..his smug face after he watches strike 3 right down the middle… the guy has lost so much speed on the bases so quickly the degradation in his performance in another 3 years should be scary…..
I’m gonna ask you this once again… If you hate everyone on the team why do you watch? Seriously why are you a Yankee fan if you can’t say anything good about the team?
I’m being serious when I say that he’s actually a Mets fan. I’m pretty sure Mike outed him once. There are a couple of posts he has where he slips and sounds vaguely calculated-meaning, he’s deliberately trolling.
I don’t think he’s that bad. He rarely interjects himself into other discussions, he’s kind of funny and, yes, he actually kind of sounds like my wife sometimes. He’s the butt of my jokes plenty of times, but I don’t mind his end-of-game-thread schtick not even near as much as I mind others.
#notIPA
I’m not saying he’s too bad, I’m just saying-he’s a Mets fan.
I figured Red Sox fan. He says “A-Roid,” which no real Yankee fan says.
The smug face line has me in stitches, I must admit.
………….

..my favorite is clueless joe..great job getting in phelps before nova…ws days are over, get that overrated clown out of here..why don’t we throw a parade…
Best Pitcher In The World
Out of pure curiosity, I have on Elementary.
Lucy Liu is “Jane” Watson.
Holmes has tattoos.
TATTOOOS.
They STARTED OFF THE SHOW by showing him shirtless in front of Lucy Liu. Yeah, this show isn’t going to be about unresolved sexual tension.
Oh, God. Shoot me now.
Sherlock Holmes has somehow become a “thing.” We’ve got the Robert Downey Jr. movies, which really aren’t bad as long as you treat them as their own thing, the awesome BBC show, the long-rumored Will Ferrell/Sascha Baron Cohen spoof, and now this.
I’d give this a shot. Does it at least stick to the spirit of the characters in some loose way?
Sherlock Holmes is the most-portrayed fictional character in movie and TV history. He’s always been a “thing.”
No one beats this guy.
Sort of. With Holmes, yeah, you can see it if you squint. With Watson, no, not at all. She’s only called Watson for name branding.
Seriously though, it’s a tragedy that this show has a character that’s supposed to be “Sherlock Holmes” in any meaningful sense.
Nova has no business pitching in any meaningful games in late august or September… yet, there we go.
for a four-game series in Toronto the offense was guaranteed to not show up for a game or two
the offense is prone to sub-mediocrity in away games in dome games and in pitcher-friendly parks
the offense is especially prone to sub-mediocrity when more than one of those variables are true
so you might as well have a lost cause sap up those innings
the derek lowe of the starting rotation
good thing we didn’t win that game in minnesota we should have won that game didn’t matter being up 2 would make them cocky anyway
baltimore didn’t win tonight so this game doesn’t matter
Weasel.
If the offense doesn’t score, it doesn’t matter who is pitching. Yeah, Nova was bad, but he was a nonfactor.
