The key is to get to Gonzalez, not the “get his pitch count up and get to the bullpen” approach. They should be swinging at first pitch fastballs in the zone and going up the middle like Swisher and Jeter did.

A high changeup should not fool a hitter that badly – I could see swinging at something in the dirt (where the change starts in the zone) if you are sitting fastball, but that pitch should have looked really high out of his hand.
All the “scrubs” and AAAA cracks about the O’s lineup are becoming increasingly laughable. At this point in the series, they’re beginning to look like the better team, younger, quicker, more resilient. The Yankees are looking every bit their collective age.
Girardi looks at stats over the entire season too much. Players get hot and cool off. Ride the hot bat when it’s hot. Move Martin up, and play Raul or we’re done.

It’s all set up for Buck now. Gonzalez for one more, Matusz for Swisher, Teixera, Granderson, O’Day for Alex and Johnson to close. That Machado HR was the game loser, probably the series loser.
In truth, this is a 12-year problem for the Yankees in terms of postseason offensive malaise, with 2009 looking like the exception. I feel like every year the Yanks are bounced out of the playoffs because the team goes cold once the calendar turns to October.

Watching the Yankees of today makes you really appreciate just how good and how professional those teams of the late 90′s were when they just steamrolled teams and continued to advance nearly every year. From 96 to 2001 they won 15 series and lost just 2, incredible.
Makes me wish I were a few years older so I could have appreciated it in its entirety.
Plus 4 of those series were sweeps and 5 of them they only lost 1 game. I admit those teams definitely spoiled me.

The Yankees have looked bad plenty of times in the postseason the past few years but this is by far the most embarrassing they have ever looked.
I’m about to hulk out like a 8 year old with frustration here.
So prior to these playoffs I was one of the few people who never really thought that the yankees were not able to hit good pitching, or get clutch hits (basically choking), but now I’m kind of starting to believe it. This team just isn’t going to win titles the way they’re constructed. I think they should trade granderson and resign swish and Ichiro. Move gardner to center and you have a sick defensive outfield who don’t strike out all that much (gardner and ichi).
We finally have the rotation we’ve been asking for for years.

1-5 we’re really solid at least for next season (assuming 1 of andy or kuroda come back next year). We need to get guys who don’t depend on the long ball to do damage. Even if it’s only removing grandy i think it would even out the lineup as a whole.

All you need is one of the two, not both. Kuroda has been incredibly affected and Pettitte has exceeded all of my expectations as well and I don’t see how one more season would make them either ineffective.

What this offense is doing to their pitching staff is a fucking crime. Sabathia, Pettitte, and Kuroda have all pitched their fucking tails off. Their reward will be a 2-1 series deficit with Home Run Phil going tomorrow against a lineup that hits tons of home runs.
This team has been one-and-done as the AL #1 seed two of the past three times, and will be in danger of making it three of four, and twice in a row. I’m still bitter about 2011, I don’t need to double that going into 2012, ESPECIALLY in regards to a division rival. Last thing Orioles fans need is some kind of trump card after 15 years of total irrelevance.
So basically, the regular season is meaningless.
I’d rather just start with a big tournament rather than go through 162 games of hell.

Amazing how, all year, many of us have talked about how offense runs dry in the post season & HRs can’t carry you. The fact you need guys who can do more than walk & hit HRs.
Others, including many who run this site, like to claim conventional wisdom regarding postseason offense as false, pointing out throughout the season whenever the NYY would hit a HR off a premier SP & other instances citing how this offense can get it done.
Yet, here we are, with a completely overmatched offense that has 0 HRs, 2 BBs & 3 runs last 2 games so far. But they scored 800+ runs & hit 245 HRs so, ya know, let’s ignore that nobody sans Cano & Jeter can actually hit & Cano, every now and again decides to swing at every pitch like its a HR derby. We are relying on Ichiro as our main offensive weapon.
This offense needs a makeover.
