This might be news to you, but the Red Sox and most of their fans have a bit of an obsession with the Yankees. They would rather knock the Yankees out of the postseason this year as payback for their collapse last year rather than the Orioles, the team that actually knocked them out of the playoffs a year ago. Boston rolled over in Baltimore this weekend and lined up two of their three best starters for this final series of the season this week. You know they’re just itching to make life miserable for the Bombers. Here’s the starting nine…

The Blue Jays and their fans hate the Yanks too yet they didn’t roll over for the O’s nor will the Rays.
Say what you will about Showalter,Maddon etc but they will never tell their team to roll over. They would make the teams playing against them earn it.

Showalter last year didn’t have a choice between spoiling the Yankees and the Red Sox. They only played the Red Sox at the end of the season (whereas the Red Sox this year play the O’s and the Yankees)

Exactly. This is what I said last night. Tonight is perhaps the most important of the 3 games for the Yanks. Mainly for the reason the Rays have massive incentive and motivation to win their game since the A’s are playing late. If the Yanks take this one (with CC pitching nonetheless) and the O’s lose and the Yanks playing against wiffleball Dice-K on Wed, I’ll feel pretty damn good about a tie for the division or winning it.
False. Showalter had his Rangers give up on the last day of the season in 2006, which affected the Yanks playoff positioning. I think he pulled his starters in the third inning against the Angels.
That would’ve been 2005, then.
I knew it was one of those. Point is, Showalter definitely quit on that last game, just to screw the Yankees over.
That’s all fine and good but these guys are more like the Pawtucket Sox than the old Boston Red Sox team of the mid 2000s. Look at the lineup they’re running out there against our lineup which is FINALLY at full strength. The lineup is so stacked that Chavy is hitting 9th. You can never go wrong with that.

Yeah, well, it’s probably worth pointing out that the Yanks technically have already made the post-season, so if that’s what the Sox fans are thinking, it just adds to their ultimate stupidity. Furthermore, if the Yanks only clinch the WC, its not like there will be high fives going on in the Sox dugout. “We did it!” We did it!” “We did it!” We…did…”oh wait, they’re still going to the playoffs. High five!
Point being, if the Yanks lose the division, it’s the Yanks fault and not “because of the Red Sox.” I refuse to let them take credit for that. Entirely different scenarios compared to their situation last year. Completely different.
Lastly, there is greater incentive to lose these games with the hopes to draft higher, which 5/6 is massively different than 8/9.

If the Yankees don’t win the division,it will not be because of anything Boston does.
It will because of games like the ones in Chicago,Cleveland(Masterton),this past weekend,the game we lost in Fenway on 9/11 where we had bases loaded and did nothing with them.
It will be like games last Tuesday or several other ones where our bullpen couldn’t stop inherited runners from scoring or gave up leads they were charged with protecting. That’s been a key reason we’ve done poorly in one run games compared to the O’s.
We’re still in the playoffs no matter what and after what they did this weekend,I never want to hear any Red Sox writer or fan say what the Yanks did in game 162 was rolling over. There were valid reasons not to use Mo,Robertson etc in that game.

So this is the first time except for that one game in midseptember that we’ve had our full line up since right around the trade deadline right?

Huh, so the Yanks and O’s would have to play an extra game to determine the division winner. I don’t like that, they should use another tie-breaker of some form. Maybe runs for versus runs against in the head to dead matchup or something.
Winning the division is such a huge disadvantage (you don’t have to play a win-or-go-home game right off the bat) that I can’t think of any tiebreaker stat that would fairly relegate a team to the wildcard game. The only fair way of doing it is a tiebreaker game.

Buccholz is an AAA pitcher?
1st off, nobody has called Buckholz a “AAA” pitcher. He’s actually been excellent since about July. Secondly, if you gave me a 100 ABs against CC I’d probably at least make contact, and I’m Joe Shmo. I’d expect a minor league player to muster a hit or two off of a major league pitcher if it’s 93 and right down Broadway.

It’s an MLB rule. Reach over to touch a ball in play and you’re gone.
But that ball wasn’t in play…
It was in play. The trajectory was altered while it was in fair territory. Clearly interfered with. The umps can still rule that there wasn’t enough evidence to overturn the call. The rule is intended to prevent situations like this.
My argument would be that I was protecting myself and it was unintentional interference.

I don’t understand Girardi pitching CC 8 innings after 2 stints on the dl and who knows what is looming in the playoffs. Does anyone think this Red Sox team is coming back from 7 down. How about 6 innings and done for CC instead of 8, ridiculous.
His pitch count was fine. If they pulled him after 6, he would have only had like ~70 pitches (I’m ball parking here). That’s overkill.
might need him on fri on 3 days rest and this game was over early, game was not close and we could’ve saved CC’s pitch count for a potential do-or-die game Friday

Huh? Girardi just let him get his work in and saved the beleaguered bullpen. This game wasn’t any more stressful for CC than a bullpen session would have been after that 2nd inning.

With the big league we had, we could’ve easily used the likes of Garcia (who actually came in the 9th), Eppley, Aarsdma, Warren, etc. None of these guys will pitch in a close game anyway, so tonight was a perfect opportunity.

Rarely do I like to indulge in fantasy, but now that we just won and our magic number is 2, I’m beginning to think of all of the missed opportunities. The blown call in Baltimore and two horribly lost games against Toronto (the Soriano BS a few weeks ago and the fiasco on Saturday) are at the top right now. I know we stole plenty of wins as well, but… damn… I sure would rather be popping an extra beer right now rather than worrying over tomorrow and Wednesday.

Joe G on the post game press conference said (in his usual short-sighted manner) that he had no plans to pull CC and save him for Friday’s potential game because he is “worried about today and not tomorrow”….smh
He still only threw 103 low intensity pitches. It’s not like it was 120 or a tense game. He’s also already had a month of rest this season.
Sure, you could pull him an inning earlier, but I don’t think it’s nearly as big a deal as you’re making it out to be.
Agreed 100%. CC has started on 3 days rest under worse circumstances. As far as today’s game, maybe resting bullpen pieces is just as important as saving CC ~10 pitches. This is semantics, as far as I’m concerned.

Plus we MAY have a friday do-or-die game. I’d rather have him be as rested as possible pitching on 3 days rest than having to recover from a “full” outing of 100+ pitches.

We were up 8 with 9 outs to go and 7 with 6 outs. We have Garcia, Eppley, Warren, Aardsma in the pen who aren’t “core” guys and will not pitch in a close game anyway. If you can’t use those guys up 7-8 runs with 2+ innings left, when can you?
