Game 160: Obsessed

Three Yankees among top ten second half jersey sales

This might be news to you, but the Red Sox and most of their fans have a bit of an obsession with the Yankees. They would rather knock the Yankees out of the postseason this year as payback for their collapse last year rather than the Orioles, the team that actually knocked them out of the playoffs a year ago. Boston rolled over in Baltimore this weekend and lined up two of their three best starters for this final series of the season this week. You know they’re just itching to make life miserable for the Bombers. Here’s the starting nine…

SS Derek Jeter
LF Ichiro Suzuki
DH Alex Rodriguez
2B Robinson Cano
1B Mark Teixeira
RF Nick Swisher
CF Curtis Granderson
Russell Martin
3B Eric Chavez

LHP CC Sabathia

Tonight’s game is scheduled to start  little after 7pm ET and can be seen on YES. Enjoy.

  • Get Phelps Up

No Pedroia OR Ellsbury for the Red Sox…they must really want that top 5 draft pick.

    • Steve

Itching to make life miserable by benching their two best players

    • DC

Ciriaco is going to play all nine positions.

  • Mike N

Let’s pound the shit out of these motherfuckers!

  • http://yanksgoyard.com/ Joe F

Boston fans are going to be saddened by this, but they can’t knock us from playoff contention. They can ruin the division, but we’re in the Wild Card at least.

  • VT Yankee Fan

Gag, stuck watching the games on NESN.

    • Mike N

      FAAACK BAAAAHSTAN!!!!!!!!!!

      • VT Yankee Fan

        Faaaaaack Pedroier.

  • Zack

The Blue Jays and their fans hate the Yanks too yet they didn’t roll over for the O’s nor will the Rays.
Say what you will about Showalter,Maddon etc but they will never tell their team to roll over. They would make the teams playing against them earn it.

    • Winter

Rays still have something to play for (at least for one game).

Showalter last year didn’t have a choice between spoiling the Yankees and the Red Sox. They only played the Red Sox at the end of the season (whereas the Red Sox this year play the O’s and the Yankees)

Props to the Blue Jays for giving both the O’s and the Yankees a fight.

      • Ro

Exactly. This is what I said last night. Tonight is perhaps the most important of the 3 games for the Yanks. Mainly for the reason the Rays have massive incentive and motivation to win their game since the A’s are playing late. If the Yanks take this one (with CC pitching nonetheless) and the O’s lose and the Yanks playing against wiffleball Dice-K on Wed, I’ll feel pretty damn good about a tie for the division or winning it.

    • WhittakerWalt

False. Showalter had his Rangers give up on the last day of the season in 2006, which affected the Yanks playoff positioning. I think he pulled his starters in the third inning against the Angels.

      • Kramerica Industries

        That would’ve been 2005, then.

        • WhittakerWalt

I knew it was one of those. Point is, Showalter definitely quit on that last game, just to screw the Yankees over.

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

That’s all fine and good but these guys are more like the Pawtucket Sox than the old Boston Red Sox team of the mid 2000s. Look at the lineup they’re running out there against our lineup which is FINALLY at full strength. The lineup is so stacked that Chavy is hitting 9th. You can never go wrong with that.

  • Ro

“They would rather knock the Yankees out of the postseason this year as payback for their collapse last year”

Yeah, well, it’s probably worth pointing out that the Yanks technically have already made the post-season, so if that’s what the Sox fans are thinking, it just adds to their ultimate stupidity. Furthermore, if the Yanks only clinch the WC, its not like there will be high fives going on in the Sox dugout. “We did it!” We did it!” “We did it!” We…did…”oh wait, they’re still going to the playoffs. High five!

Point being, if the Yanks lose the division, it’s the Yanks fault and not “because of the Red Sox.” I refuse to let them take credit for that. Entirely different scenarios compared to their situation last year. Completely different.

Lastly, there is greater incentive to lose these games with the hopes to draft higher, which 5/6 is massively different than 8/9.

    • Ro

..er last sentence meant to say greater incentive for the Sox to lose these games..

  • Brandon Mauk

They’ll be very disappointed. We got our big man tonight against the Laptop Thief, “Phelpsy” tomorrow versus Lester, and the Hiro against Dice-BB

  • King of Fruitless Hypotheticals

    Maggots, moustache and Phelps.

Man this needs to end quickly and well. Frickin sox. It’s always the sox.

    • King of Fruitless Hypotheticals

DAMN BASTARDS. Of course Ellsbury is on my fantasy team and I need 2 steals and home run asap…its always the sox.

    • jjyank

Great minds, my friend. I had the same choices.

  • Zack

If the Yankees don’t win the division,it will not be because of anything Boston does.
It will because of games like the ones in Chicago,Cleveland(Masterton),this past weekend, the game we lost in Fenway on 9/11 where we had bases loaded and did nothing with them.
It will be like games last Tuesday or several other ones where our bullpen couldn’t stop inherited runners from scoring or gave up leads they were charged with protecting. That’s been a key reason we’ve done poorly in one run games compared to the O’s.
We’re still in the playoffs no matter what and after what they did this weekend,I never want to hear any Red Sox writer or fan say what the Yanks did in game 162 was rolling over. There were valid reasons not to use Mo,Robertson etc in that game.

    • VT Yankee Fan

      The sweep in Oakland too.

  • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

So this is the first time except for that one game in midseptember that we’ve had our full line up since right around the trade deadline right?

    • Mike N

      Yep! Just in time!

  • Christopher

    We’re gonna win.

  • Will (the other one)

Well, in fairness, if things were reversed and the Yankees were just finishing up a miserable season that was universally considered an abject failure, most of us would be pretty fixated on spoiling things for Boston too.

    • Zack

We would but we wouldn’t just roll over for the other team the way they did either.

      • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

You mean like we rolled over in Tampa last year to keep Boston out?

  • Pasta Stumbling Sojo

I didn’t see this mentioned elsewhere, but did Valentine or someone else explain why Zach Stewart started yesterday out of nowhere?

    • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

So he could push Buckholz and Lester back for this series.

      • Ro

But to keep both his best players in Pedroia and Ellsbury out of the line-up tonight? I get what you’re saying, but that makes no sense.

        • Hummingbird S.

Pedroia is hurt, Ellsbury simply sucks

        • jjyank

Maybe Bobby V is “having a moment”.

        • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

according the radio, Pedroia jammed his finger on a slide this past weekend, and Ellsbury is suffering from a stiff shoulder and “general malaise” (aka I don’t give two shits)

  • Hummingbird S.

let’s take care of business tonight

  • Get Phelps Up

    Nice start for CC!

  • Hummingbird S.

    the slider looks unhittable

  • jjyank

Alright. CC looks sharp as hell, and the AAAA Red Sox won’t stand a chance if he keeps that up. I’m feelin’ good.

    • Get Phelps Up

Calling that Red Sox lineup AAAA is being generous.

      • jjyank

        This is true.

    • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

AAA* I think you’re giving them a little too much calling them a quad-A line up.

      • http://yanksgoyard.com/ Joe F

        Yea I used to play quad-A ball…

  • Cy Pettitte

hope that first inning was a good preview of the next 8

  • BENICIO DEL TORO

Lolz on this red sux lineup. 2 strikeouts that inning for CC on 8 pitches

  • Mike N

Good start by CC! I was just getting my dinner on the plate, and by the time I sat back down, he was done!

    • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

8 pitches, 2 Ks. Can’t do too much better.

  • Captain_Turbo

I’m glad the Sox are playing it this way. When we pound them to dust and take the division it will be all the sweeter cuz they tried and failed to play spoiler.

  • mt

If Boston playing well over next 3 days means we lose division and have to be the wild card , I cannot vouch for how Boston fans will feel – I am sure there will be some satisfaction, especially if Yanks were to go on to lose wild card game. Will it offset in any substantial way this train wreck of a season for Red Sox? Given their Yankee obsession, maybe it will.

However, as a Yankee fan, Red Sox will be an afterthought in 3 days – if Yanks lose to this team over next 3 days and have to be the wild card, I will be most angry at Yanks!!! – Yanks should be able to beat this lineup, especially CC tonight (Pedroia is hurt and Ellsbury I guess has been hurt but Valentine is saying he is not playing tonight because of lefty/lefty – ???). Also horror shows like Saturday in Toronto will probably also be remembered (massive RISPFAIL in the face of major defensive and baserunning errors from Toronto where they wre trying to give us the game).

  • RkyMtnYank

Huh, so the Yanks and O’s would have to play an extra game to determine the division winner. I don’t like that, they should use another tie-breaker of some form. Maybe runs for versus runs against in the head to dead matchup or something.

    • Winter

Winning the division is such a huge disadvantage (you don’t have to play a win-or-go-home game right off the bat) that I can’t think of any tiebreaker stat that would fairly relegate a team to the wildcard game. The only fair way of doing it is a tiebreaker game.

      • RkyMtnYank

Yea, I guess so. On the bright side it keeps them playing and tuned up for whatever game they play next.

  • Rocky Road Redemption

WOW I hope we win. Pulling out the division this year would be so sweet after what this team has been through.

    • jjyank

Absolutely. For all the faults this team has, I will give them a metric shit-ton of credit for winning division considering it all.

  • Get Phelps Up

    D. none of those

  • BENICIO DEL TORO

Man, A-Rod is looking older at the plate every day. Hoping that he can get out of this slump, because he just looks straight up bad

    • MannyGeee

he needs some Just for Men…

  • Cy Pettitte

0-2 to 3-2 to a leadoff double against Mauro Gomez.

  • Rocky Road Redemption

Is it me or has Ichiro featured a worse arm since he got here than Grandy?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

He takes forever to get rid of the ball. He’s the exact opposite of Matsui in that regard. Matsui had a weak arm but got rid of the ball right away.

      • Rocky Road Redemption

I mean, I was expecting this mythical super-arm we’ve heard so much about, but not only do players take the extra base against him all the time it never even seems to be that close.

    • MannyGeee

ironically, he’s also featured a hotter bat than Granderson

      • Rocky Road Redemption

        Heh, that’s true.

  • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

First of all: who is Mauro Gomez, I can’t believe he’s hitting clean up.
Second: I can’t believe CC allowed a double to him.

  • BENICIO DEL TORO

leadoff double to this scrub?? are you kidding me?

  • Hummingbird S.

blind ump, awesome. That was clearly a strike.

  • curt hennig

Their AAA players can double off our “ace”, our “super athlete on absurd bloated contract” fans weakly at a bad pitch from a AAA pitcher, great start guys.

    • jjyank

I really don’t get this logic. Yeah, Gomez doubling is annoying, but what are your standards here? Perfect game or bust? The runner hasn’t even scored (yet)! Man.

      • Tom

Perfect game? 27K’s or bust! Not a single hitter should be even able to make contact.

        • curt hennig

If Steve Nebraska could do it, then CC should be able to do it.

    • Get Phelps Up

      Buccholz is an AAA pitcher?

    • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

1st off, nobody has called Buckholz a “AAA” pitcher. He’s actually been excellent since about July. Secondly, if you gave me a 100 ABs against CC I’d probably at least make contact, and I’m Joe Shmo. I’d expect a minor league player to muster a hit or two off of a major league pitcher if it’s 93 and right down Broadway.

      • Genghis

I knew Joe Shmo. Joe Shmo was a friend of mine. And you, sir, are no Joe Shmo.

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

Why are people so down after one double? The guy hasn’t even scored. And even if he scores it’s 1 run.

    • jjyank

And he didn’t score. It feels weird to say this, but I agree with you whole-heartedly.

Like I just right above there, what is the standard? Bitching and moaning on ONE hit in 2 innings so far in a scoreless game? Seriously.

    • http://theevilsquare.com handtius

right. people are edgy as hell. 3 deep breathes and some valium.

    • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

It’s really the whole it’s against some no name. After such a dominate 1st. It was slightly off putting.

  • Hummingbird S.

no outside corner against righties for CC..

  • Pasta Stumbling Sojo

I was away for a little so I didn’t get a chance to respond to you, Tom Riddle. Did Valentine or anyone on the Sox actually acknowledge that they wanted to line up Buchholz against the Yanks? It’s one thing to play hard to play the spoiler, but it seems kind of ridiculous to publicly acknowledge that you’re trying to help one team and hurt another.

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

    Dontcha know

  • Rocky Road Redemption

    ROBBIE!!!

  • http://theevilsquare.com handtius

    was that off the glass?

    • http://theevilsquare.com handtius

      wow. it did.

    • http://theevilsquare.com handtius

      wow. it did.

    • Mike N

      YEP!!!

  • mt

We need to do what O’s did yesterday to Red Sox – score runs early and maybe demoralize them. The longer Sox hang in or even lead us the more emboldened Red Sox get.

Many Yankees have great numbers against Clay B so I hope we see it.

    Thank you , Robbie!!

  • Mike N

    OH! HELLZ TO THE YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Cy Pettitte

Robbie! holy shit. he is definitely out of that slump.

  • Get Phelps Up

    Robbie!!

  • Hummingbird S.

    SEEEEEE YA! ROBBIE!

  • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    ROBBIE!!!!!!!!

  • Tom

    Robbie!

  • Effthisnoise

    Ummmm roped

  • jjyank

    Beautiful, Robbie.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

Watching the Yankees is so much more enjoyable when Robbie is hot.

  • Captain_Turbo

    Robbie!

  • Get Phelps Up

I hope that landed in stuart a’s living room.

    • mt

But he did not drive in anyone in scoring position :-)

    • MannyGeee

      it NEEDZ MOAR PARADES

    • jjyank

I hope that landed in stuart a’s living room crib.

      Fixed.

  • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Wow. That hit off of the black. That’s the first time I think I’ve seen that.

    • jjyank

What just talking to my friend about that. It was a serious bomb.

    • Get Phelps Up

Branyan hit one off there in 09 I think.

    • http://theevilsquare.com handtius

posada hit one of there too.

    • Mike N

And not just the black facing below the window: the actual glass.

  • Darren

I don’t hear the name Bobby Murcer enough. I miss him.

    • Mike N

Yeah. I got a little teary-eyed when they said they wished he could have been there to call Cano’s homer.

    • Chilango

      Yeah tied Murcer didn’t he.

  • Hummingbird S.

this umpire is awful. CC isn’t getting that call.

  • MannyGeee

wow, that strike zone just got HUGE for Teix. welcome back

  • captain kiwi

    let’s go boysssss

  • MannyGeee

wow, Swisher just said fuck yo change up

  • CountryClub

Granderson batting 7th is pretty sweet. Can deal with the all or nothing result down there.

  • Cy Pettitte

    awww yea Grandyman!!!

  • Rocky Road Redemption

    The Grandyman can!

  • Mike N

    YAYAYAYAYAYAYAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PILE ON NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

    Grandyman!!!!!

  • curt hennig

I’m worried by Swisher’s hitting — 13 of the last 14 games mean his current streak is due to peter out early in the ALDS (assuming they make it there), which means he’s set for bad hitting all throughout the playoffs.

    • Rocky Road Redemption

Ha, this post is hilarious. “I’m worried, one of our players is hitting too well!”

    • Havok9120

You’re…..worried about a player hitting well?

RAB is jumping the shark a bit tonight.

      • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Haha. I think he’s a troll. But seriously. That is too much.

      • OMG! Bagels!

Nothing to complain about makes for sadness.

  • Get Phelps Up

    GRANDYMAN!!!

  • Hummingbird S.

    GRANDY!!! SEEEEEE YA!

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

This one could get out of hand quick. LOL Boston!

  • Captain_Turbo

    Ka-boom!

  • jjyank

Awesome start. Now if we can only get the fucking Orioles to start losing.

  • MannyGeee

huge home run. I am so glad todays the day Bucholtz decided to turn back into a pumpkin

  • your mom

    Beeeautiful! No excuses now CC.

  • Chilango

    Keep it going guys

  • Mike N

    HAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Get Phelps Up

Wow, what a moron Red Sox fan.

  • Hummingbird S.

    RUSS!!! SEEEE YA!!!

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

    Belly to belly

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

Ha! Help from the Red Sox fan. Review time.

  • FachoinaNYY

    a boston fan no less

  • http://www.ProjectNeoX.com ProjectNeo

by a red sox fan lol

    • Anthony

You know Red Sox fans will complain about that EVEN though the guy is wearing a Pedroia jersey!!!! Too funny.

  • Pasta Stumbling Sojo

Ha, it was a Sox fan that caused the interference.

  • Anthony

    BACK2BACK!!!

    • Anthony

      Shit…. that replay :(

  • jjyank

    Balls. That wasn’t a homer.

  • Captain_Turbo

    Another ka-boom!

  • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    RUSSEL!!

    ALL ABOARD THE RUSS BUS!!!!!!

  • captain kiwi

    HAHA YES!

  • FachoinaNYY

    Coney knows whats up

  • Chilango

    interference it will be overturned

  • Get Phelps Up

It should be a HR just because a RS fan reached for it.

  • Hummingbird S.

no way to tell either way, you have to keep the call on the field

  • Effthisnoise

Oh NOW we want replay. Eff you

    • MannyGeee

If I was Boston I would want to see absolutely NOTHING from 2012 over again, including that home run.

  • your mom

    Suck that Baltimore Arreolas!!!!

  • MannyGeee

ha, they’re gonna review it. even Jery Remy is doing his best NFL Network impression saying he “believes it will be inconclusive”

  • Mike N

That was a fucking Red Sock fan!!!

  • Darren

    Double.

  • Tom

    Incontrovertible evidence?

Enough to overrule the call on the field?

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

I think it would have hit the very top of the well and bounced back into play. Double. It’s not indisputable visible evidence though.

  • Rocky Road Redemption

WOW, bad call. I’ll take it. :-)

    • FachoinaNYY

Actually I think it was correct, I thought so too initially, but the more they showed it the trajectory looked liked it would have skimmed the wall and got out.

  • https://twitter.com/#!/Paddock9652 Stratman9652

I would let it stand just to watch that guys friends kick the shit out of him.

  • jjyank

Wow, it was a homer. Really close play, even with replay. No complaints here.

  • Hall and Nokes

    Best Sox fan ever.

  • Chilango

    upheld?

  • Captain_Turbo

Still looks like a homer… too close to call anyway.

  • Hummingbird S.

    HR!!

  • Kramerica Industries

    Keep the bloodbath coming.

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

They’re kicking the guy out? Who wouldn’t try to get the ball? Kick everybody out then.

    • MannyGeee

really? dick move by the stadium

      • CountryClub

I believe it’s an MlB rule. If you interfer with a ball on the field of play, you go. Since it was a HR, they should let him stay. It looked like they were going back to their seats when the YES cameras cut away.

    • Chilango

If there’s no interference what are they kicking him out for? Lame move.

      • FachoinaNYY

Ichiro’s time in Pinstripes could honestly not gone any better thus far

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

It’s an MLB rule. Reach over to touch a ball in play and you’re gone.

      • Get Phelps Up

But that ball wasn’t in play…

        • Darren

It was in play. The trajectory was altered while it was in fair territory. Clearly interfered with. The umps can still rule that there wasn’t enough evidence to overturn the call. The rule is intended to prevent situations like this.

My argument would be that I was protecting myself and it was unintentional interference.

  • Nice Scheister of Doom

    To close to overturn.

  • Leg-End

You can’t chuck him out for that!

  • CountryClub

The Yankees bottom 3rd tonight is averaging 26 home runs. Awesome.

  • Rocky Road Redemption

Are they serious about kicking this guy out? What bullshit.

    • jjyank

      Yeah, if it’s a homer, I don’t see why he’s in trouble.

      • Rocky Road Redemption

Even if it wasn’t, that’s STILL bullshit.

        • jjyank

I agree, but I get the fan interference thing.

But in this case…if it was a homer on replay, there was no interference. And if there was no interference, what his he getting thrown out for?

    • Anthony

So many O’s fans still sore over Jeffrey Maier…. didn’t some newspaper or something award him with free tickets or something? Well, at least Sox fans can’t complain about that…and they SHOULDN’T since one of their own caught it!!

  • Pasta Stumbling Sojo

Why aren’t they showing whether the fan ended up getting kicked out after it was called a homer? Part of me wants him to remain because that’s ridiculous for him to get kicked out if it was ruled to be not interference, and part of me thinks it’s hilarious for a Sox fan to cause a Yankees homer AND get kicked out unjustly.

    • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I’m just letting that second half take over.

  • your mom

Didn’t even notice our line-up today. It’s the best I’ve seen in a long while. Chavez is the ninth hitter???

  • mt

Martin now has 4 HRs in 12 ABs against Bucholtz.

Last time in Boston pril gave up 5 homers to Yanks the day they celebrated Fenway’s 100th anniversary.

  • Kramerica Industries

Under these circumstances, C.C.’s gotta be able to lock this one down, no?

  • Darren

what a great, natural call by Scooter on #61

Imagine Sterling butchering it? “Roger that one! Into the Terrace!! From Maris!”

    • jjyank

My money is on: “MARIS!!!……HE HIT IT TO PARIS!!!!”

      • Darren

        gah! horribly perfect

  • jjyank

Man I hope this game ends up 20-0. That would be fun.

    • OMG! Bagels!

they can’t get dizzy running the bases.

  • OMG! Bagels!

Pink hats were not in attendance in Fenway.

  • Mike N

Am I delusional, or was Buchholz a CY contender some years back?

    • Hummingbird S.

I also remember him throwing harder, like consistently up to 94-95. Maybe I’m misremembering.

    • Get Phelps Up

      He had a shiny 2.33 ERA in 2010 but a 3.61 FIP.

      • MannyGeee

on like 110 innings or something foolish too, if memory serves.

  • OMG! Bagels!

Aceves says I’m with the wrong fraking team.

  • Kramerica Industries

Well, it should be 49 saves for Johnson, but, you know…

  • MannyGeee

In Bobby V’s final act of defiance, he’s gonna leave Bucholtz out there to hang.

    • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I’m completely okay w/ that. Let the kid’s confidence shatter and let his arm turn to rubber.

      • OMG! Bagels!

I’m actually feeling sorry for him.

    • OMG! Bagels!

Well, it’s impossible to hate him more.

  • OMG! Bagels!

  • Karl Krawfid

    Pass Gehrig please.

    • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Didn’t he pass him earlier this year? Or did he just tie him in ATL?

      • captain kiwi

only tied him. 23 for arod

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

Here’s a good opportunity for Alex to deliver the knockout blow.

  • Chilango

ARod goes deep I can feel it

    • MannyGeee

and if by deep you mean hit the ball, it makes a loud pop, efveryone in the stadium screams and it goes right to the left fielder.

  • Captain_Turbo

Nice of Bucholz to pitch BP today…

  • mt

I know Yanks are doing well but I have to say this – I have never seen a team get so many hits with RISP and NOT score a run – hopefully Arod won’t whiff or DP.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

It does seem to happen an awful lot.

      • OMG! Bagels!

        Not. this. time.

      • jjyank

It does. I’d imagine this is a consequence of having a generally older and slower team. Also a team in which it’s best speed threat (among the regular line up spots, anyway) in Gardner has missed almost the entire season.

  • Mike N

    YEAH!!!

  • Cy Pettitte

I’ll take an RBI from ARod at this point.

  • Hummingbird S.

wow, no power whatsoever.. he’s done.

  • forensic

    Dear Red Sox,

Thanks for pushing back Buchholz to tonight!

    Signed,

    All Yankees Fans

  • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Well from the crack of the bat on the radio he squared the ball up well…just happened to hit it at some one I guess?

    • Mike N

      BASES CLEARING DOUBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Chilango

ARod? Hit it hard, on a line.

    • Hummingbird S.

it wasn’t all that hard hit.. it was inside a bit and he simply doesn’t have the bat speed to turn on those pitches and hit them hard.

    • MannyGeee

he hit it square, just right at Nava. it was louder than it was far, thats for sure

  • Captain_Turbo

    In on the hands.. darn.

  • Cy Pettitte

    Robbie again!!!

  • Effthisnoise

    Wow cano…..lol

  • OMG! Bagels!

    NICE!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hummingbird S.

    ROBBIE!!! SCORCHING RIGHT NOW!

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

cano should definitely get a parade now…….

  • jjyank

God I fucking love this game so far. I know the Red Sox are terrible, but it always feels so damn good to beat them.

  • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    Hahaha have some RBI’s Robbie!!!!!!!!

I guess stuart a was busy tonight? RBI’s…parades…extensions……..raises…for…EVERYBODY!!!!!!

    • jjyank

Don’t worry, he’ll pick a new victim soon enough. First A-Rod, the Cano…you can only pitch about the team’s best hitter for so long.

Who wants to place bets on his next target? My guess is Tex.

  • Captain_Turbo

Robbie is damn scary when he’s hot…

  • captain kiwi

oh hell yes robbie! keep piling it on!

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

    LOL Boston. Let’s go Rays!

  • Get Phelps Up

So…Zach Stewart ended up pitching better than Buchholz!

  • Leg-End

    Well this is fun.

  • Hall and Nokes

I dunno Bobby, I’d let Buchholz try to work through this.

  • curt hennig

So…everyone on the team managed to get on base this inning, except for two players – an injured aging player who hasn’t showed up for the last 30 games, and Mark Teixeira.

    • Chilango

I’m not a big ARod fan, but he did hit a solid line drive

    • MannyGeee

obvious troll is obvious. we get the meme, A-Rod is old, Swisher is going to choke in the playoffs & stuart a was right.

      thanks for coming by

  • CUYanks

After winning, of course, my hope is for the Yankees to keep the margin so big that CC can be lifted after an easy 90-100 pitches and be ready in case he needs to go on short rest in a must-win game.

  • OMG! Bagels!

Show us your imbedded Yankeeness Al.

  • Tom

    Aceves, aka Bobby’s best friend.

    100 pitches tonight?

  • Tom Q

So, aside from worryrwarting that CC might go cold waiting out this long inning, there’s not much to feel anxious about here tonight.

    • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Until Aceves takes over for Padilla and starts headhunting

    • CUYanks

I hope so. Let’s get a few more innings in though.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Damn, I actually felt a tiny bit sorry for Buchholz.

    • jjyank

I don’t. Fuck the laptop thief.

  • OMG! Bagels!

Hope CC is still sharp after a 2 hour inning.

  • captain kiwi

i almost feel bad for them. aside from salty and ciriaco, i don’t hate the sox that are on the field.

    • OMG! Bagels!

      Agree.

    • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Apart from those two I barely know any of these guys.

      • captain kiwi

yep. haven’t done anything to warrant hatred.

    • Captain_Turbo

It’s Sox fans I despise more than anything…

      • MannyGeee

yeah, considering today’s Red Sox team is as non recognizible as they come, I think its the ideas of beating the Red Sox that makes me happy. and hating the ‘concept’ of the Red Sox, as it were

  • CountryClub

Cano has seen two pitches in two ABs. If he popped both up, most fans would be all over him. It’s a game of inches.

  • OMG! Bagels!

The season’s kinda no fun without the rivalry.

    • Rocky Road Redemption

The O’s pissing me off has kind of supplemented it.

  • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Actual John Sterling quote “Baltimore didn’t play great against Baltimore, in Baltimore, so I guess Baltimore didn’t expect them to win.”

    • OMG! Bagels!

    • http://yanksgoyard.com/ Joe F

      He’s horrid to listen to.

      • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

by the way dude, I know I told you yesterday that you should have somebody look over some of your reading to help improve your grammar. I’d love to help you, I also should because I haven’t had to edit anything in almost a year and plan to try to get my job back as sports editor on BBC’s paper when I go back next semester.

        • Darren

Are you talking to Sterling? If not, what grammar are you correcting?

    • Rocky Road Redemption

That’s one of his all-time best right there.

    • Captain_Turbo

One of these days Suzyn is going to freak out and bite him.

  • MannyGeee

  • MannyGeee

welcome back Tex… and thank you Ace Man.

I think imma go see how the Rays & Os are holding up.

  • Tom Q

Man, I wish this was the game Phelps or Kuroda was pitching. It’s almost a waste, to pour it on like this when CC looks so good.

    • MannyGeee

NOva must be heated. he could have used this kind of run support

  • your mom

LOL. Tex imagining it was Padilla.

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

Welcome back, Mark! What a lineup! Finally healthy.

  • Effthisnoise

  • OMG! Bagels!

    • OMG! Bagels!

  • The Real Greg

    Rays up 1-0

  • nsalem

Thoughts on pulling CC early and when? I have mixed feelings.

    • Chilango

5th inning or 80 pitches. Assuming the lead is still huge

    • MannyGeee

i liked the comment from up there… 90 or so. although, at this rate he could go all the way on 90 pitches

Tex will end the season with 30 HRs, calling it right now. Might end the game with 30 who knows.

  • BENICIO DEL TORO

This is absolutely glorious. How do you guys think Girardi will handle CC the rest of this game?

  • curt hennig

The Yankees hit too many home runs this inning…this does not bode well for the playoffs, since home runs do not count in the playoffs.

  • Effthisnoise

    Damn, swish almost

  • Mike N

    Sterling called it a homer?

    • OMG! Bagels!

      kay almost did

    • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

It was high, it was far, it went foul. I’m having far to good a time to care.

  • OMG! Bagels!

  • MannyGeee

goddammit, straighten that out. that would have been epic

  • Rocky Road Redemption

    Yeah Tampa!

  • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

This is just insanity. I don’t want it to end though.

  • http://theevilsquare.com handtius

people done complaining for tonight? thought so.

    • MannyGeee

I can find something to complain about. like, for instance, I have never seen a 10 run inning (except for in my beer league…) If Swish didnt hook that foul then I would have been all set.

      there. challenge completed.

      • http://theevilsquare.com handtius

      • WhittakerWalt

The Sox are his team, no wonder he’s so bummed.

        • jjyank

Someone said once that he was a Mets fan troll. But this comment makes it seem like he’s a Red Sox fan.

          • WhittakerWalt

He also says “ARoid” and that’s a Sox fan thing to say, all the way.

          • Rocky Road Redemption

Yeah, I thought Mike outed him as a Mets fan.

Awesome! I now have like three people helping me edit my college essays. All editors!

      • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Yeah dude, if/when you want me to take a look at them let me know. I have your email from when you messaged me to bust my chops on tumblr, so when you want me to take a look I’ll email you my email address and I’ll be happy to look at it.

        • http://yanksgoyard.com/ Joe F

          Hahahaha you got that?

Yea I got to finish them first. I’m going to work on one tomorrow. Essays are easy.

          • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

            Haha, of course I did.

      • jjyank

Well I’ve never done editing as part of a job. But I do have 6 years of higher education that largely required me to write and edit my own papers.

        • http://yanksgoyard.com/ Joe F

          I trust you still.

          • jjyank

I’m fairly certain that my current job application is moving along mostly on the strength of my writing samples, so that’s something. I’m good at it, I promise.

            • http://yanksgoyard.com/ Joe F

You made it into RU graduate school. That’s where I want to be. Well not grad school, but you know.

              • jjyank

Those basterds made me go to Newark though. To be honest, I was underwhelmed with Rutgers, but I’m sure New Brunswick is different. Maybe I just missed my undergrad professors.

                • http://yanksgoyard.com/ Joe F

That’s rough. I want New Brunswick.

                  • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Most undergrad programs are run at New Brunswick as far as I know. I know about 10 people that went there (not including JJ) and all but one of them when to NB campus. and the one might have been a graduate student, I wasn’t that close to her.

                    • jjyank

You’re right, for the most part. There were several undergrad dorms in Newark, though. Most of the grad programs were in Newark. Poli Sci, med school, English, business I know were all in Newark.

    • FachoinaNYY

For saying that Sterling is horrid?

      What am I missing?

      • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Joe was looking for help on improving his grammar for the SATs last night. I told him the best way to do that is to write and have somebody to read it and correct it, so I’m going one step further and offering to do the actual reading and corrections.

  • jjyank

Gotta love it when the offense has more runs scored than hits. That’s good stuff.

  • Effthisnoise

Ive seen shorter rain delays than that inning

  • curt hennig

So, Yankees up 9, that means we’ll see Logan in the 7th, Robertson in the 8th and Soriano in the 9th, right? Need to get those guys some work, need to save Lowe/Eppley/Rapada for when we’re behind 1. (Can’t use Robertson or Soriano there, it’s not a save situation.)

  • Effthisnoise

    Linsanity!

  • OMG! Bagels!

no one at the Trop. fair weather fans.

    • Get Phelps Up

There aren’t even people there when they’re winning. They didn’t sellout their playoff games last year.

    • Tom

They are not fair weather fans at all.

They don’t show up when the team is winning and they don’t show up when they are losing.

  • CountryClub

I believe Jeter needs 1 more run scored to have the 2nd most 100 run seasons in history. At least thats what a reputable source tweeted the other day. I know people are down on runs as a stat, but still impressive.

  • Bartolo’s Colon

god damn, iglesias has got one hell of a glove!

  • dkidd

    michael kay referencing WAR

    /head explodes

  • CountryClub

Yanks should throw nova out there in the 4th. Save CC in case they need him Friday.

    • Bartolo’s Colon

nova could easily give up 9 runs

    • Bartolo’s Colon

nova could easily give up 9 runs

  • Tabbert

Michael kay channeling his inner Brian Kenny with all this sabrmetric talk.

  • OMG! Bagels!

    Cabrera should get it.

    • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Idk, I think it should be Trout. With out him the team would probably be like a .500 team. Plus if you take defense and difficulty of position into account as well as comparing offensive production of positions, I’d go with Trout.

      • Get Phelps Up

The Angel’s record is better than the Tigers, but Cabrera will win the MVP and “lead his team to the playoffs”

        • jjyank

Man I hate that argument. “His team didn’t make the playoffs, how valuable was he really???!!!”

          *face palm*

          • Get Phelps Up

I hate it too but it’s what happens. Bautista or Ellsbury should have won last year but their teams didn’t make the playoffs.

            • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Agreed. If Bautista was on a team that was even in contention for a playoff spot I think he would’ve won it easily. I personally think he should have won it.

              • http://yanksgoyard.com/ Joe F

He led in almost every major SABR stat. Agreed.

          • CUYanks

Yeah, might as well just wait for the playoffs to end and only give it to someone on the championship team. “If you didn’t win the WS with me, you could not win it without me.”

          • Need Pitching & Hitting

Cabrera should be rewarded for having the foresight to play in a weak division.

    • Bartolo’s Colon

i think trout should get it. trout is an awesome hitter, granted, cabrera is a better pure hitter, but you can walk cabrera, you cannot walk trout. plus his defense is just ridiculous, cabrera not so much.

  • Effthisnoise

    Shut down inning???

  • Hummingbird S.

Ciriaco 0-2. Almost as good as that 9-run inning!

  • OMG! Bagels!

    Where’s Pedey and Ellsbury?

    • Chilango

  • Anthony

9-0 and Ciriaco strikes out… I’m crying tears of joy.

  • Hall and Nokes

I don’t even really understand how Cabrera/Trout is even a sabermetrics vs old school issue. It seems like a purely normative debate over whether baserunning and defense matter.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

      +1

    • jjyank

Exactly. Maybe there can be some debated over how much they matter, but of course they matter. And there also is no debate that Trout does those things much, much better than Miggy.

  • OMG! Bagels!

This new thing gives me a freaking headache.

  • Tabbert

Rays making me nervous. Lets score some more runs guys. only 9 outs to go until Rodney is up.

  • OMG! Bagels!

Joe’s Girardi’s binder will be in charge of everything. Oh the charts he’s probably making already.

  • Captain_Turbo

    Nine more runs this inning?

    • Captain_Turbo

      I guess not.

  • Havok9120

The commentary this inning is out of control.

  • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Typical Yankee offense. Hit some homeruns in an inning and just go to sleep the rest of the game. This team hits far to many homers rabble rabble, rabble RABBLE rabble.

/trolling, am I doing it right?

    • Captain_Turbo

You forgot to add that they hit so many home runs because they play in a band box.

Ha. Asking for the Rays to have a good offensive game is like asking 9 Eduardo Nunez’s to have an error free game.

  • brian

that’s why you don’t pull jeter for nunez…. a boot there and who knows, maybe its 9-4 by the end of the inning

  • OMG! Bagels!

Valentine tried to rag on the Yankees before the season and he screwed everything else.

    Pedey looks disgusted.

  • OMG! Bagels!

    Pedroia looks really pissed.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Pedroia isn’t even playing and you can still hear his potty-mouth.

Stop with the f-bombs you trashy fuck!

  • dkidd

is paul konerko a hall of famer?

    • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

No, he’s still an active player

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

The Orioles emergency landed here last night. I took a dump in Mark Reynolds’ suitcase

  • Anthony

Cano on is on a tear!

  • Hummingbird S.

Robbie heating up at the right time!

  • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Robbie is back. and absolutely on FIRE right now!

  • Tabbert

Cobb gets out of the Jam. 0-0 going into the bottom of the 6th.

Only 6 more outs until rodney! lets go rays.

  • Cy Pettitte

Cobb and Buchholz have been our best players tonight.

  • Get Phelps Up

Haha Chris Davis takes strike 3 right down the middle.

  • WhittakerWalt

I love this version of Cano.

  • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I know we’re trouncing them, but according to game day the 1-0 pitch in that count (called a ball) was more a strike than the 3-0 pitch (called a strike)

    • RkyMtnYank

      It looked that way too.

  • captain kiwi

loving the yankees in october so far. here’s to hoping they’re just getting hot at the perfect time.

  • Tabbert

Brett Anderson is expected to be back for the A’s on friday for that Wild card game. Another reason to avoid that play in game.

    • Jersey Joe

      -cringe-

With Grandy and Ichiro vs. lefties + the DH situation in question…I’m scared! Maybe Nunez at DH? Possibly Andruw Jones?

  • Pasta Stumbling Sojo

Hey Tom Riddle (and others), I wanted to finish the conversation above about the Sox starting Zach Stewart.

Did Valentine or anyone on the Sox actually acknowledge that they wanted to line up Buchholz against the Yanks? It’s one thing to play hard to play the spoiler, but it seems kind of ridiculous to publicly acknowledge that you’re trying to help one team and hurt another.

  • Tom

So assuming stays on this pace, about 7 innings and hand it off to Lowe? Garcia?

    • Get Phelps Up

      Warren.

    • Jersey Joe

Yeah I say Warren too. I hope Melky Mesa can get an AB or 2. (Is he still on roster?)

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

Not Lowe. He’s probably their best long man at this point. I’d save him in case Phelps struggles early. Maybe Wade or Garcia.

Maybe only 6 innings for CC as well.

  • The Real Greg

Oh Matt Wieters ties it up

  • Tabbert

    Orioles tie it at 1…

    • your mom

      Of course, fuckers.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

    Dammit Weiters.

  • Rocky Road Redemption

    Dammit…

  • anon

    freakin wieters

  • Anthony

C’mon Rays play like your season depends on it.. because it DOES. Orioles are so irritating.

  • Hummingbird S.

they can’t lose 1-run games. TB needs to score at least 2 more..

    • The Real Greg

No they can’t lose extra inning games. Rays can’t be tied after 9.

  • Tabbert

Cmon tampa… your season is on the line tonight. Put up some damn runs. PLease.

  • Mike N

    CC looking good!

  • MannyGeee

two very important things I just learned while watching NESN:

    1) Apparantly the team (and apparantly Orsillo & Remy) took the train down to NY. this is the first time since the Prohibition Era have heard of a pro team taking a train.

    2) It seems that the train had a food car, and the main attraction on the food car was “fried chicken”….

FRIED CHICKEN!!!!!!!!! too soon? nah, fuck it… Fried Chicken.

P.S.- this entire 1/2 inning has been a discussion about fried chicken and how much Don Orsillo eats.

The 2012 Red Sox, ladies & gentlemen

    • RkyMtnYank

Glad I get the Yes feed on Mlb.tv but good to hear there are no meaningful baseball discussions in Boston.

  • MannyGeee

wow, the Trop is an absolute graveyard.

tell you what, say what you want about the people of Boston (Red Sox fans in particular), but I would bet my house and my dog that Boston could support a SSECOND team better than Tampa supports their 1.

    • jjyank

Heh that’s not saying much. Maybe they just need a new stadium? You’d think with how Miami constantly pisses off their fan base, they’d have a real opportunity in Florida.

      • Get Phelps Up

I think the Rays need to move to Las Vegas, Portland, San Antonio, etc. It’s pretty telling when they coundn’t even sellout their playoff games last year.

        • jjyank

I’d love to see a team in Vegas, personally. They’d have to reconfigure the divisions, though.

          • Get Phelps Up

Indians move to the AL East, Rangers or Astros move to AL Central, Rays move to the AL West.

            • jjyank

I’d love that. Mostly because my uncle from Ohio is a huge Indians fan and he used to give me so much shit back in the day. I would love the opportunity to destroy the Indians as a division rival.

              • Get Phelps Up

It definitely would be nice to play the Indians 18 times instead of the Rays. And family bragging rights are cool too. I have cousins in Minnesota who are big Twins fans…2009 and 2010 were fun.

      • MannyGeee

Need a new stadium? the only way those motherfuckers would sell out a game in October (non Red Sox & Yankees, of course…) is if you make that motherfucker 15,000 seats.

  • Get Phelps Up

Rays with 1st and 3rd, nobody out!

    • Tom

While I’m not going to complain when he does it against Baltimore…

How in the hell is Jeff Keppinger hitting .326?

  • Get Phelps Up

    Rays lead 2-1!
Hopefully Peralta and Rodney can finish it.

  • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Okay 8 run lead? Pull CC, let Warren go through the line up once, maybe Garcia, just in case we have to play the play-in game…

  • Hummingbird S.

1st and 3rd, one out for TB. Comon good guys!

    • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

4-1 Rays but you know that

  • Tom

Ichiro looks locked in… 2nd highest batting average in Sept (behind Mauer) and he’s even hitting into some loud outs.

I was sketpical of the trade, but he’s been a big part of why the Yankees are where they are.

    • Jersey Joe

Ichi is batting .329, higher than his AVG from 01-11. I love this trade.

  • http://needanewnamegivesuggestions.tumblr.com/ Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

4-1 Tampa something good just happened there.

  • Jersey Joe

God I wish we could kick ass like this against BoSox when they’re in pennant race.

  • https://twitter.com/#!/Paddock9652 Stratman9652

Apparently the Rays realize that they owe the Yankees for letting them walk into the postseason last year.

    • CUYanks

I’m still holding out hope for a 3-way tie for the second wildcard!

  • MannyGeee

    Giminez!!!!

    I’m out guys, go Rays!!

  • Hummingbird S.

Hopefully this is CC’s last inning.

  • anon

Don’t understand why CC is coming out to pitch still in this blowout…. why not save him for a potential wild card or division deciding game?

    • The Real Greg

He’s at 77 pitches. Have him pitch to his usual 100 and then yank him.

      • CUYanks

I think 90 or so is enough. 77 I think was maybe just a little too low for his normal routine.

      • anon

But if we need him for either 1) WC game or 2) game to decide who wins the East, he’ll basically be pitching on 3 days rest.

Why not pull him now to save his pitch count since we are up EIGHT runs and save him for either of the 2 scenarios? This game is basically over.

        • The Real Greg

Another reason is what Michael Kay just said. They need as much bullpen as possible for tomorrow.

          • Need Pitching & Hitting

They have more than enough potential mop up guys who will have zero impact on tomorrow’s game.

          • anon

You do realize we were up 8 runs coming into this inning with 9 outs to go? I’m not saying we should have DRob, Joba, Boone, or Sori pitch, but someone like Garcia, Warren, heck even Eppley or Aarsdma could come in to get the final 9 outs

            • The Real Greg

I’m fine with that. He’s probably coming out after this inning.

      • Need Pitching & Hitting

They may need him to pitch on short rest on Friday. Why not give him a light load while they have the chance?

        • anon

          +1. This.

    • Get Phelps Up

He’s only at ~80 pitches…let him go 7 and have Warren or Freddy finish it up.

      • Jersey Joe

        this

  • The Real Greg

    Lets go Rays

  • Captain_Turbo

I guess we used up all our offense in the second inning.

    • MannyGeee

perfectly OK by me. it was an orgasmic 2nd inning

      • Captain_Turbo

        It was pretty cool.

      • RkyMtnYank

This is an old team, only one orgasm per day anymore.

  • Ivan

oops sorry for the repeated posts, my computer was acting dumb slow

  • Mike N

    YEAH! Go Rays!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hummingbird S.

I know it’s no big deal but it would’ve been kinda cool if they scored double digit runs

  • MannyGeee

    fuck Pedro Ciriaco Mauro Gomez

  • Cy Pettitte

left field bleachers roll call in the 7th inning is pretty funny

  • Tabbert

4 outs to go. Farnsworth is warming up and not rodney… NOT COOL

    • CUYanks

Maybe Joe Maddon’s gonna go all out-of-the box and pitch Farnsworth in the 3-run save and start Rodney tomorrow in a must-win game.

(Kidding of course, I’m sure Rodney will be in there in the 9th)

    • The Real Greg

He;s probably warming up if McGee doesn’t get McClouth. Rodney’s still going to come in.

      • Tabbert

        I sure hope so!

    • Tom

I’m good with saving Rodney for 2 innings tomorrow (or have him only throw 1 inning so he’s definitely available the next 2 days)

  • Mike N

Thankfully Ibanez was not in LF.

  • MannyGeee

    Ichiro.

    better than your 4OF.

suck it, rest of the league.

  • CUYanks

The real tragedy of the Red Sox getting swept with their worst SP’s on the mound vs the O’s is that the Rays could have had a chance to catch the O’s with a sweep if the Red Sox could have taken just 1 in that series.

  • Tabbert

3 outs to go in tampa.

That Rangers vs A’s game is a win win for us. IF the rangers lose, Yanks will be tied for the best record in the AL, IF the Rangers win, the Rays will be playing another must win game tomorrow. PERFECT.

  • forensic

3 outs to go in Tampa.

In the immortal words of Jim Leyland:

“You can tell Fernando Rodney that if he shoots that (arrow) three times in the next three days, I’ll be his cupid forever,”

  • Jersey Joe

So, what is postseason roster-batters only? –Knock on wood for ALDS–

    14 batters:
    Jeter SS
    Ichiro LF/RF
    Teixeira 1B/DH
    Cano 2B
    Rodriguez 3B/DH
    Swisher RF/1B
    Granderson CF
    Martin C
    Ibanez DH

    Nunez IF/DH
    Gardner OF/Pinch Runner
    Stewart C
    Chavez CI/DH
    ______________ =

I actually think Andruw would make the most sense as far as flexibility and I think with Gardner being limited and Tex needing rest at 1st, Ichiro/Grandy needing PH against tough lefties, etc.

    Thoughts?

    • forensic

No way I see Girardi leaving Jones off the postseason roster.

And Nunez just got a gift with the Nix injury. His season isn’t over yet.

      • Tom

        Pinch hit dammit!

        (I’m kidding)

        • Tom

wow…. that was a good reply fail (about letting Chavez hit).

He will want a righthander to pinch hit though….

      • anon

Girardi would be even crazier than I thought if he carried Jones on the roster. Jones hasn’t shown anything the past few months to even deserve consideration. No longer hits lefties, BA is about .190 or so

        • forensic

His stats will mean nothing to Girardi in this case. He’ll say he’s been swinging better since he hit that one homer weeks ago and he’s a veteran who’s been on the roster all year.

Almost 0% chance he’s not on the roster.

    • Get Phelps Up

      That’s only 13, and I’d add McGehee.

      • Need Pitching & Hitting

I think the last spot will come down to either Jones or McGehee.
Joe seems to like Jones more.

        • Get Phelps Up

He left Ibanez in to face Oliver the other day…hopefully that means he’s done with Jones.

          • Need Pitching & Hitting

Could be. Or that might have just been because Ibanez had great career numbers against Oliver and Jones didn’t.

  • Tom

Tex looks pretty good for his first game back.

Would like to see Girardi pull him next inning – he won’t get any more AB’s and I’m not sure he needs the defensive reps.

  • MannyGeee

Since this game is pretty much over, I suppose I can leave you with this ancecdotal story, while off topic I feel is if I should share. during one of the early Yanks/Sox series:

Don Orsillo on TV: “Bruce Springstein will be at Fenway Park this year on August 15th, and…”

My kid: “Wow, Bruse Springstein… on my birthday!”

    Me: “Yeah, pretty cool huh…”

kid: “Yeah. So wait, what is Bruce Springstein do? Is he like a ball player or a wrestler or something?”

Me: “NO, he’s a rock star *continuing to geek out for like 5 minutes about Bruce to my kid”

kid: “ohhh…” 30 seconds later “I wonder what else is happening my birthday…”

    • Mike N

Nice story! I hope you then listened to the entire Born To Run album with your kid!

    • RkyMtnYank

Your kid is wise beyond his years. lol

  • anon

    5-1 rays now

  • Chilango

    Rays tacked one on

  • Tabbert

    5-1

  • CUYanks

If the scores hold up, I will be rooting pretty heavily for an A’s loss tonight so the Rays can enter tomorrow in must-win territory again.

    • Mike N

      YEP!

  • Anthony

Miggy is leading the majors in HRs now.

  • Effthisnoise

Dear baltimore this it what it feels like when teams actually try against you. Get use to it from now on

    • Captain_Turbo

Heh… maybe the Sox rolling over for the O’s was a blessing in disguise.

  • Anthony

The O’s are not looking good right now. I like this.

  • anon

why the EFF is CC still pitching?!?!?

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

    Why?

    • Anthony

I’m wondering the same thing. Maybe Joe will yank him at 100? Even with Phelps on a short leash tomorrow I feel this is a too much.

  • Hummingbird S.

there’s absolutely no need for CC to pitch here.

  • The Real Greg

And now we have found something to complain about. Way to go guys.

  • Mike N

Interesting that CC is in. I guess they don’t want to mess with his regular rhythms or whatever.

  • Tom

Good job by Girardi getting Tex out with no more AB’s coming.

Not sure why CC is still out there, but not a huge deal.

  • The Real Greg

They had Garcia warming up in the bottom of the seventh. My guess is that CC talked Girardi into it.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

      Who’s managing the team?

    • anon

Joe G needs to be smarter than that to just “listen” to his players and follow what they tell him. This game is over. We have mop up guys for a reason.

Hopefully this doesn’t come back to bite the Yanks in a few days

      • anon

And there’s a reason Joe G is getting paid to be the manager

  • Hummingbird S.

Is Iglesias the worst hitter in the majors? he sure looks like it

    • Tom

He had a ~.600 OPS in AAA over 2 years.

The scouting report on the bat was… “well he’s a potential elite defender” or in Gammons speak “he has a lot of bat speed and potential”

  • Cy Pettitte

holy shit get Farnsworth out of there.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

    Fucking Farnsworth.
    Get Rodney in.

  • Get Phelps Up

The trop is such a piece of shit.

wow… 5-3 now. Damn Farnsworth. PLease bring in rodeny

  • The Real Greg

Oh Kyle Farnsworth’s at it again. 2 run homer by Davis. 5-3 Rays

  • Hummingbird S.

Farnsworth still trying to fuck the Yankees.

  • captain kiwi

jesus, get farnsworth outta there joe.

  • Kramerica Industries

    Only at the Trop.

    • VT Yankee Fan

      What a joke.

  • The Real Greg

If the Rays blow this, Maddon’s going to get some heat for not starting the inning with Rodney.

  • Anthony

wowwwwwww (very ironic we are all still antsy even while we’re winning haha)

  • Mike N

    FARNSWORTH!?!?!?!? Fuck.

  • Hummingbird S.

Gardner with a bat! He’ll hit!

  • jjyank

So, Gardner’s gonna hit? Interesting. I can’t say I was expecting that.

  • anon

Tying run to the plate for the Os…no outs

  • Kramerica Industries

    Unreal.

  • The Real Greg

And now the tying run comes to the plate in Tampa as Jones gets on

  • Cy Pettitte

    helmet off = Nunie safe

  • CountryClub

It’s a little weak that the yanks didn’t tack on more runs. Mostly because Boston trotted out bad pitcher after bad pitcher.

really gunna complain about 10 runs? lol

  • captain kiwi

haha, nunez losing the helmet! beautiful

    Melky Mesa – congrats dude!

    • Tom

    THE MELKMAN DELIVERS!

    Oh, hi everyone.

    • jjyank

      OH HAI

      I FUK’D UR SEASON

  • pistol pete

I don’t understand Girardi pitching CC 8 innings after 2 stints on the dl and who knows what is looming in the playoffs. Does anyone think this Red Sox team is coming back from 7 down. How about 6 innings and done for CC instead of 8, ridiculous.

    • jjyank

His pitch count was fine. If they pulled him after 6, he would have only had like ~70 pitches (I’m ball parking here). That’s overkill.

      • anon

might need him on fri on 3 days rest and this game was over early, game was not close and we could’ve saved CC’s pitch count for a potential do-or-die game Friday

        • pistol pete

Agree, Girardi is short sighted, CC will pitch on 3 days Fridat if there’s a game and he burned him 8 innings and 103 pitches tonight, ridiculous.

Burned him 8 innings and 103 pitches?

Huh? Girardi just let him get his work in and saved the beleaguered bullpen. This game wasn’t any more stressful for CC than a bullpen session would have been after that 2nd inning.

            • anon

no one is saying we should’ve used Drob, Joba, Logan, or Sori, all of whom are overworked.

With the big league we had, we could’ve easily used the likes of Garcia (who actually came in the 9th), Eppley, Aarsdma, Warren, etc. None of these guys will pitch in a close game anyway, so tonight was a perfect opportunity.

              • anon

                **big lead, not league

Very good night. Yankees put it away early and the O’s lose too.

Seems like that would be a nice thing to do tomorrow too…

  • JLC776

Rarely do I like to indulge in fantasy, but now that we just won and our magic number is 2, I’m beginning to think of all of the missed opportunities. The blown call in Baltimore and two horribly lost games against Toronto (the Soriano BS a few weeks ago and the fiasco on Saturday) are at the top right now. I know we stole plenty of wins as well, but… damn… I sure would rather be popping an extra beer right now rather than worrying over tomorrow and Wednesday.

  • http://yanksgoyard.com/ Joe F

    FIRST PLACE.

  • anon

Joe G on the post game press conference said (in his usual short-sighted manner) that he had no plans to pull CC and save him for Friday’s potential game because he is “worried about today and not tomorrow”….smh

    • forensic

He still only threw 103 low intensity pitches. It’s not like it was 120 or a tense game. He’s also already had a month of rest this season.

Sure, you could pull him an inning earlier, but I don’t think it’s nearly as big a deal as you’re making it out to be.

      • jjyank

Agreed 100%. CC has started on 3 days rest under worse circumstances. As far as today’s game, maybe resting bullpen pieces is just as important as saving CC ~10 pitches. This is semantics, as far as I’m concerned.

      • anon

The game was blown wide open and we may need CC to go deep in the playoffs. Why have him throw 103 when we only needed him for ~80?

        • anon

Plus we MAY have a friday do-or-die game. I’d rather have him be as rested as possible pitching on 3 days rest than having to recover from a “full” outing of 100+ pitches.

    • JLC776

What’s wrong with having a fresh bullpen for tomorrow – you know, another must-win game?

      • anon

We were up 8 with 9 outs to go and 7 with 6 outs. We have Garcia, Eppley, Warren, Aardsma in the pen who aren’t “core” guys and will not pitch in a close game anyway. If you can’t use those guys up 7-8 runs with 2+ innings left, when can you?

        • YanksFanInBeantown

Why not let CC get his work in?

        • JLC776

Stranger things have happened in baseball. Could you imagine the shit storm if he pulled CC and suddenly a save situation formed an inning later?

You always take the win that’s in front of you at this point in the season. We bitch enough when Girardi plays revolving-door bullpen, we can’t also bitch when he doesn’t.

          • anon

We were up 7 with 6 outs to go. We could’ve used Garcia for those 6 outs, or Garcia for 3 and a combination of Eppley/Aarsdma/Warren for the other 3.

If those 3 guys (not including Garcia) can’t get 3-6 outs without giving up less than 6 runs, they don’t deserve to be on the roster.

To counter your point, can you imagine the shitstorm if we have to play on Friday and lose because CC is ineffective, not having fully recovered from throwing 100+ pitches tonight when it was unnecessary?

  • pistol pete

Rodney stopped Orioles 9th inning rally, 1 up 2 to go.
