Update: Yankees call up Leroux, demote Greene, release Turley

By

6:22pm: I was wrong about Billings, he is still with the team. The Yankees announced that Leroux was called up, Shane Greene was sent down, and Nik Turley was given his unconditional release. Turley hasn’t pitched at all this year due to an arm problem. I’m guessing his release is like David Adams‘ — released then he’ll re-sign on a minor league contract (after everyone freaks out).

10:50am: The Yankees will call up right-hander Chris Leroux prior to today’s game, according to Erik Boland. I can’t think of another reason why he would be in the clubhouse. Bruce Billings will likely be designated for assignment to clear a 40-man roster spot following last night’s 76-pitch mop-up outing. Tough gig. Leroux was not fully stretched out with Triple-A Scranton, but he was scheduled to start today and should be good for 75 pitches or so if need be.

Keep trying till you find one that sticks, I suppose. To be honest, I think Leroux would have a better chance of any kind of extended success with us, over the likes of Greene, Billings, and Daley(albeit, I still like Daley alittle in spite of his outing this yr).

He did have success in limited innings in 2011 with the Pirates, pitching to a 2.88ERA over 25innings.

Greene is an actual prospect. The others aren’t. This was explained to you in the game thread.

Greene has barely pitched above AA, so, much like Mitchell, he was here because that’s who’s on the 40-man, not because anyone really thinks they’re MLB-ready.

That, and why Chris Leroux and Bruce Billings are here, could not be more different from one another.

      • Jorge Steinbrenner

Ah, written before the game thread. Apologies there. The point as to how they’re different still holds, though.

  • Macho Man “Randy Levine”

And Jose Campos had TJS yesterday, according to Boland.

Then 60-day, or just plain DFA, him and keep Billings around the extra week or so for depth.

I’m hoping Turley comes back. He was a 50th round pick. Not too many of those make it to the Big Show and I was hoping Turley could do it. With his arm troubles, I’m guessing no other team will snap him up.

Good luck, Nik. We hope we get you back.

Turley was another needless 40-man add-on who, if I remember correctly, was another potential Rule 5 casualty. Perhaps they bring him back on an MiLB, which is fine by me. My hope is that, once we get through the “fresh arm of the day,” we can regain some flexibility with the roster.
