Beltran feels good after taking swings for second straight day

2014 Draft: Jacob Lindgren
Game 51: Home Sweet Home

Carlos Beltran felt good after swinging a full-size bat earlier today, Joe Girardi told reporters. Beltran took 15 swings from each side of the plate with a fungo bat yesterday. It sounds like the plan is to gradually build Beltran back up — hit off a tee and soft toss, then in a cage, then in regular batting practice, then minor league games — before he rejoins the team. Obviously the bone spur is still in his elbow, so they have to be careful. So far so good though.

  • King George

I’m not even going to pretend to know…but does anyone have any idea if these things have a propensity to flair up randomly or can the cortisone shot usually minimize the pain through season’s end?

    • Trapper John Sterling

Try as you might, Suzyn, but you just can’t predict bonespurs. You can’t!

  • TWTR

I fear it is delaying the inevitable. In my twisted world, they are saying he is fine so as not to lose any leverage with Morales given their potential desperateness for another hitter.

    • Steve D Fl

That sounds about right. Sneaky, very sneaky.

  • RetroRob

Hopefully this goes dormant and he can make it through the season. I also hope that if he does he still has the surgery in the off season. It will return. Who knows how long he’s had it or what caused it to start rubbing on the wrong area in his elbow. Even a reduced Beltran can help this offense.

  • Jorge Steinbrenner

The walking dead are often pain free.

  • ALZ

So most likely it also puts him regularly at dh, since it’s in his right elbow.

Beltran averaged 146 games/season over the past 3 years so I don’t think you can necessarily say you saw this coming. But…. when you sign a 37 year old to a 3 year contract, you do take on some risk. He needs to get the elbow right. Unless it is truly something he can play through, I would prefer he gets the surgery NOW. This is a guy who is a proven bat in the postseason.
