Game 33: Win and Rest

By

By Anaheim standards, the first two games of this series against the Angels haven’t been that bad. Considering the Yankees walked five straight batters (including three with the bases loaded!) to lose Monday’s game, that tells you just how ridiculous things usually get in this ballpark. Hopefully I didn’t just jinx it. The Yankees have a chance to escape with their first series win in Angels Stadium since the middle of the 2011 season with a win tonight.

David Phelps and Hiroki Kuroda both turned in very strong starts in the last two games, and now it’s Vidal Nuno‘s turn. I feel like we know what the other four guys in the rotation are, good or bad, but Nuno is something of a mystery. He’s been very good the first time through the order but has gotten tattooed after that, which makes sense given his stuff and profile. These Angels gave him a hard time two starts ago, and now the element of surprise is gone. The Yankees have won the game immediately before each of their scheduled off-days this season, and it would be nice if that trend continues tonight. Here is the Angels lineup and here is the Yankees lineup:

  1. CF Jacoby Ellsbury
  2. SS Derek Jeter
  3. RF Carlos Beltran
  4. 1B Mark Teixeira
  5. DH Alfonso Soriano
  6. 3B Yangervis Solarte
  7. LF Brett Gardner
  8. 2B Brian Roberts
  9. C John Ryan Murphy
    LHP Vidal Nuno

The weather is great in Anaheim, probably. It’s a safe assumption. First pitch is scheduled for a bit after 10pm ET and you can watch on YES. Enjoy the game.

  • Chip Rodriguez

No complaints about the lineup and playing Murphy against a LHP, but I really wish Beltran was DHing instead of Sori.

    • The Other Matt

Sori’s numbers against Santiago are pretty good.

      • Winter

He’s saying he’d rather have Soriano in RF and Beltran at DH. They’d both still be in the lineup.

        • The Other Matt

True Tea. True Tea. I realized that once I left the comment.

    • Dalek Jeter

Eh, neither is great in the outfield and Beltran (though he has looked bad out there) has much more experience in RF than Soriano.

      • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

Yes, but my big thing is I want them to preserve his knees or year 3 this deal could be awful.

      • The Other Matt

If Soriano had any experience in RF prior to this year then we might have seen more of him in RF, as opposed to Beltran. But Soriano just looked so uncomfortable in right field the few times he’s been out there. So much so, that as putrid as Beltran has looked in right field, it probably does serve better to have him out there where he is familiar with the readings of the ball off the bat, and his strong arm can come into play, as opposed to having Soriano out there.

They honestly just need to give Soriano the Lyle Overbay tutorial. Make him take fly balls every day in right field prior to the ball game, until you feel comfortable having him out there. You could always you use Ichiro as a defensive replacement in the late innings, if need be.

    • Winter

Beltran’s looked pretty bad in RF, but saying that Soriano has a noodle arm. It’s a lose-lose situation.

  • Yankeefan91

Hopefully Nuno has a good start if he doesn’t they should have Aceves Pitch his next start.

    • Winter

But I thought Aceves was taking over for Sabathia in RAB-commenter-land…

  • Dalek Jeter

Tonight we defeat the Scioscian Scourge zu Ehren seiner Majestät König Friedrich und dem Vaterland, Preußen.

    • Winter

Für Land! Für König! Für Preußen!

  • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

    Jeter is a beast

  • Yankeefan91

Anyone heading to a Yankees game soon ? I’m going on Tuesday hopefully we win i cant believe we got sweep by the Mets last year.

  • Rolling Doughnut

A walk and an error. Let’s capitalize boys

  • vicki

how demoralizing it must be to have your home crowd so vocal for the opposing team.

  • Yangeddard Solarte

Leadoff walk. Bunt him over, Jete.

  • The Other Matt

Collin Cowgill should be expecting to be DFA’d tomorrow.

  • Yangeddard Solarte

The Angels defense is worse than ours! OH MY WHAT WAS THAT RF DOING!

  • Winter

Smart move by Santiago, knowing the Yankees can’t score with bases loaded, none out.

  • RetroRob

Should be scored a hit. A better parting gift.

  • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

    just snuck one by there.

  • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

They better get at least 1 run out of this.

  • Yangeddard Solarte

The old Mark Teixera is back. Now if they could get the rest of the guys going. Put two more runs on here and we’ll be in good shape.

  • Yangeddard Solarte

Got to get multiple runs here with 4-5-6 up against this winless pitcher. Stake Nuno to a big lead early.

  • Dalek Jeter

Shitty hitting by Sori there. But I love this resurgence of Tex. He’s been fun to watch at the plate the last 2 or 3 weeks.

    • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

every ab seems crummy by soriano. He always comes out swining, and then in an 0-2 count he always has to be active.

  • RetroRob

Players do have better numbers with the bases loaded, but not all created equal. Tex hits .370; Soriano hits .280.

  • mike_h

need all the runs we can get Nuno is on the mound

  • The Other Matt

Looks like Gardner clipped Pujols wrist there.

  • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

crummy hit by gardner, but got the job done.

  • TheRealGreg

Santiago twisted his knee and Pujols almost got Bubba Crosby’d

  • Yangeddard Solarte

Angels defense unraveling here and now Pujols is injured.

  • RetroRob

That’s right, Michael. You’re the only one obsessed with Pujols, who is fine. It’s Santiago is the one they’re concerned about.

  • The Other Matt

Random: Don’t know if anyone listens to his music, but doesn’t Howie Kendrick resemble Frank Ocean a bit?

  • nycsportzfan

4-0 Baby! Tex is poised for a big yr!

  • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

Sure this isn’t the little league team?

  • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

    BROB with the clutch hit.

  • RetroRob

    Thankfully they didn’t cut Roberts.

    • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

nice big ballpark for nuno tonight.

  • YesWeMcCann

what’s fat mike whining about now?

  • Yangeddard Solarte

5 runs should be enough for Vidal Nuney.

  • The Guns of Navarone

    Well, alright then.

  • Dalek Jeter

I’m loving this game thus far. We’ve needed an inning like this for a good long while.

As I say that though, shitty shitty baserunning by Roberts. The Serial Killer is up 2-1, see if you cant get our best all around player (Ells) another AB with people on base.

    • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

2 outs it’s hard when your only runner on 1b.

  • YesWeMcCann

That inning dropped my blood pressure a few points.

  • OldYanksFan

One hard hit ball… 5 Runs. Good Karma.

  • Winter

Phew. Trout juuuuust got under that.

  • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

    go run into Pujols cowgill

  • OldYanksFan

Is ARod still alive? You guys remember him? I have not heard as much as a peep about him since the day after he dropped his lawsuit.

    • Dalek Jeter

Well he’s suspended for the season. I mean maybe he’s working out at the complex in Tampa, but he’s not allowed int he clubhouse at all so why would we hear anything?

      • The Guns of Navarone

Yeah I’m personally glad that the focus is on this team and on this season.

      • Yankeefan91

I Would love for Arod to show up in his final Yankee Stadium Game and sit in the suite just so i can see the reaction on peoples faces.

        • Yankeefan91

was supposed to say “Arod Show Up for Jeter Final Yankee Stadium Game”.

        • Dalek Jeter

That would actually be fantastic. I’d definitely laugh.

    • Yankeefan91

Ive heard hes going to a lot of college baseball games and talking to a lot of players.

  • The Other Matt

    EL CAPI-TAIN!

  • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

nice that jeter got that hr out the way.

  • Yankeefan91

The Orioles need to offer a job to Ken Singleton lol the guy doesn’t shut up about his former team sheshhhh.

    • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

He is better than the angels announcers were yesterday.

  • Dalek Jeter

    OH CAPTAIN MY CAPTAIN

  • Get Phelps Up

Too bad he didn’t retire after Sunday’s game.

  • RetroRob

    Thankfully they didn’t cut Jeter.

  • The Guns of Navarone

Geez, seems like there are more Yankees fans there than there were in any game during the last homestand.

  • Yankeefan91

Angel Stadium Sounds like the old Yankee stadium after that Derek Jeter HR.

  • Captain Turbohiro Tanaka

Well, that was fun. Tune into the game late and they’re up 6-0. I’m going to miss the first two innings for the rest of the season.

    • Yankeefan91

Its Your Fault the scored turn of your tv lol.

    • RetroRob

We’re going to have to ask you to leave. Things have not gone well since you arrived.

  • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

    I’ll take the out.

  • RetroRob

So does Scott Boras own that box right behind home plate? There are other people in there, but he’s always standing up like it’s his lair.

    • vicki

he probably looks like that no matter what room he’s standing in.

      • RetroRob

He believes the entire stadium is his den.

  • TheRealGreg

If he walks McDonald, get him out of there.

  • nycsportzfan

Cappy with the shot! Cappy coming around!

  • nsalem

Walking John McDonald would be a bad sign.

  • Yankeefan91

Nuno how the hell do you walk John McDonald are you serious.

  • TheRealGreg

    Get him out of there

    • Dalek Jeter

Oh Greg. I can’t even be mad at you right now.

    • Macho Man “Randy Levine”

Greg, I’ve told you repeatedly that the panic button is NOT a toy!

      • TheRealGreg

IT WAS JOHN MCDONALD! ON FOUR STRAIGHT PITCHES

        • Dalek Jeter
        • Macho Man “Randy Levine”

Greg, give me the button. You’ve lost your privileges.

          • TheRealGreg

            I didn’t even know I had those.

            • Macho Man “Randy Levine”

What, privileges? Of course you do. You know I’m always here to help. Therefore I have to grant privileges.

  • TheRealGreg

    Nuno got very lucky

  • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

    Whew, thats over.

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

    Jet lag wore off finally

    • RetroRob

Just in time for them to leave.

  • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

    Soriano swings at everything….

    • Winter

      Everything except strike 3.

    • Dalek Jeter

Yeah, but he’ll go on 2 week stretches where he’ll carry the team and hit everything out of the ball park. He’s the ultimate all or nothing guy.

      • The Other Matt

He’s like a right handed version of Curtis Granderson. Or what Curtis Granderson used to be.

        • The Other Matt

Though even Granderson took a few pitches once in a while.

        • Dalek Jeter

Grandy walked a bit more but yeah, that’s an apt comparison I’d say.

    • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

      except the 0-2 pitch

  • Yangeddard Solarte

This kid just keeps hitting and hitting and hitting. Sac fly and a seeing eye single tonight. .300 avg, .400 OBP, there’s nothing more that you can ask from this kid.

  • nsalem

Apparently Yangervis has adjusted to others adjustments. He’s cost controlled to. How sweet it is.

    • nsalem

      too.

    • nycsportzfan

Well said, hes got some very good projections at this point. The answering back so quickly after the slump is really cool..

  • Chip Rodriguez

Awesome, into the Angels bullpen already. I like.

  • nsalem

The pitcher who flipped the ball to Frank Robinson was Jim Barr. I remember it well.

    • Macho Man “Randy Levine”

You’d think someone would know better than to show up Frank Friggin’ Robinson.

  • Dalek Jeter

shitty Babip luck by Gardy there, no runners on that’s probably up the middle for a single.

  • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

did they just tell us brob has 4 steals without being caught this year?

    • Winter

Doesn’t surprise me. He’s not blazing fast like he used to be, but he’s still quick and a very smart baserunner.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

The Yankees as a team are 24-for-27 in SB attempts this year.

      • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

Yes, they’ve been good, it’s just that brob got caught this game, not really that long ago.

        • Dalek Jeter

Also, they probably just read a stat they had prepared in their little file from before the game.

        • Dalek Jeter

Is that a caught stealing or a pick off?

          • Winter

A “pickoff” where the runner tries to advance is scored as a CS.

          • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

according my box score they list that as a cs, he went to 2B.

  • The Other Matt

Nice quick inning there by Nuno.

  • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

vidal only likes facing the big guns?

    • Dalek Jeter

He also seems to pitch a lot better from the full wind up. Idk if it’s a confidence thing, but when he’s got nobody on base he’s right on the rubber ready to go pitch after pitch. However when he gets a runner on he gets to Josh Beckett like speeds.

  • Dalek Jeter

Michael Kay: NOBODY GIVES A SHIT ABOUT THE SURFBOARD THING

    • Macho Man “Randy Levine”

I do. Because I surf all the time in good ol’ PA.

    • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

but what if it moves again?

  • Captain Turbohiro Tanaka

John Ryan Murphy is just too long to say. He should shorten it to like J.R. Murphy or something.

    • Dalek Jeter

They agree in the YES booth, apparently he’s JR again.

    • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

it is. I prefer just JR or John.

  • Dalek Jeter

I have a drinking problem: I need to sit up to continue drinking but I want to lay down.

    • vicki

      beer helmet.

      • Dalek Jeter

Bottle beer only, what do you take me for some kind of savage?

        • The Guns of Navarone

          Whatcha drinking?

          • Dalek Jeter

Dogfish Head 61, I’ve been addicted as of late.

            • Macho Man “Randy Levine”

Addicted? I’m pretty sure it’s replaced all the blood in your body.

              • Dalek Jeter

And all the money in my bank account.

            • The Guns of Navarone

Hmmmm never had it. I’ve never been a fan of “fruit beers” although Dogfish Head usually puts together some interesting brews.

              • Dalek Jeter

I’ve never really had any apart from 61 and Dogfish Head’s newest: Aprihop. Both have been fantastic.

        • vicki

i like it in the can.

          • Dalek Jeter

Honestly, I’d probably drink cans too if they made my beers in cans, mostly because the cans tend to stay cold longer.

            • The Guns of Navarone

Some of my fav beers are in cans. Gandhi Bot is OUTRAGEOUS.

            • vicki

              laugh at my joke, dude.

              • Dalek Jeter

I did, I just tried to play it stray it straight. =P

          • The Guns of Navarone

Not sure how to feel about this comment

            • Dalek Jeter

she’s right, don’t drink, just laugh.

              • Dalek Jeter

                Dont’ think just laugh*

You should definitely drink and laugh.

    • Captain Turbohiro Tanaka

That sounds like the correct order of things when drinking.

  • Dalek Jeter

    Man, this umpiring crew though.

  • Yankeefan91

i wonder if those Ichiro look a likes are the same ones that used to go to the mariners game.

  • Dalek Jeter

Nice! I’d like to see at least 2 more runs here.

  • The Guns of Navarone

Boy, the Angels are every bit as bad defensively as the Yankees. They pulled this shit at the Stadium, too

  • Winter

    Good baserunning there.

  • TheRealGreg

Beltran just can’t catch a break

  • Dalek Jeter

Nice play by Pujols and Beltran hit the ball hard there. Closer game I’m probably upset, but hey, he hit the ball hard and got semi-robbed by Pujols

    Teixeira’s play: hugely disappointing.

  • Captain Turbohiro Tanaka

    Teixeira, you suck.

    • Winter

I seriously hope this is sarcasm.

      • Captain Turbohiro Tanaka

And if it isn’t? What are you going to do about it, Winter? You’re the worst season of the them all!

        • nsalem

I seriously hope that was sarcasm.

          • Captain Turbohiro Tanaka

            Hope springs eternal.

            • Winter

              Not where I’m from.

  • TheRealGreg

Son of a bitch. If they didn’t have 6 runs, that would really piss me off

    • ropeadope

      Papa John’s, right?

  • YankeeDJW

Meh, that better not come back to bite us. 5 runs against this team doesn’t seem like much. Then again, we’ve got Nuno dealing on the mound. At least it’s not CC…

  • Yangervis

    pathetic from Tex

  • Macho Man “Randy Levine”

Damn. Even when they’re doing well, they still find ways to suck.

  • Dalek Jeter

Man, Tex has been our best player short of Ellsbury this season, and had a 2 run double with the bases loaded 3 innings ago, and he gets turned on immediately. RAB, you shouldn’t (because I should be used to it), but you still disappoint me sometimes.

    • nsalem

Some people judge players on what they did in the last 60 seconds. Although there is a good argument that this is an extremely viewpoint it certainly is their right to express themselves in said fashion. Better that they vent their frustrations here than in a watchtower with an automatic weapon.

      • nsalem

        extremely ignorant viewpoint

  • Captain Turbohiro Tanaka

At least Nuno is doing his best impersonation of a major league pitcher tonight.

  • No 2013 again

damn.. the few innings that I miss the offense explodes

    • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

Oh you missed a bases loaded 0 outs and no runs inning too.

      • No 2013 again

Im just glad we managed 5 runs in a single inning.. that’s like a week’s worth of runs for this team lately.

  • nycsportzfan

Nuno doing his thing so far

  • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

Gardner’s bat is just for show.

    • nsalem

How come his lifetime OBP is around 20 points over league average then?

      • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

That seems like you’re reinforcing his point in a way.

One could say high OBP guys bats are just “for show.”

        • nsalem

Except he’s hitting .278 which is also above league average.
I took it as criticism but maybe I’m wrong. Wouldn’t be the first time.

          • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

I like gardner. Just have to admit he doesn’t swing at a whole lot.

            • nsalem

Definitely agree, but is that a bad thing. His P/PA is 4.06 which is 23rd in the AL. In past years he has been in the top 10. He goes deep in the count and visually it makes his K’s seem extremely frustrating. K/PA rate lifetime is 1/5.46 which isn’t terrible though. I do see your point.

  • nsalem

Woops Brian thinks he has transformed into a power hitter overnight.
    AKA Len Dykstra disease.

  • nsalem

14 outs on 57 pitches good job so far Vidal.

  • Macho Man “Randy Levine”

Ugh. They were never officially called the Pilgrims.

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

    Looks pretty comfortable now

  • nycsportzfan

Can’t wait to see Betances blow away some Angels later. Nuno and Betances combo baby!

    • nycsportzfan

Yippee! Now I get to watch Big D sit em down after my man Nuno finessed em to death.

  • Steinbrenner’s Ghost

Sure helps when the Angels are in “we gotta fly outta here in a couple of hours to Toronto mode”.

  • Dalek Jeter

Just thinking out loud: if Phelps can do what he did a couple days ago and Nuno can do what he’s doing tonight for the next couple weeks and Pineda comes back healthy I’d almost rather send one of them down to the minors to stay stretched out in case of injury than have them bounce back into the bullpen.

    • vicki

if aceves proves reliable i bet that’s what they do. likely nuno.

      • nsalem

These are great problems. 48 hours ago our pitching staff was collapsing and fans were on the ledge.

        • vicki

          feast or famine.

        • Dalek Jeter

          Baseball.

    • Winter

Honestly, it depends on the state of the bullpen at the time. If the ‘pen is going strong, then sure, send down Nuno (or Phelps, but I’d prefer Nuno). If the ‘pen is struggling, or short viable options, then I think you have to keep all of them with the big league club.

      • Dalek Jeter

Of course, such of decsesion doesn’t happen in the vacuum of the rotation, but if Thornton, Betances, Warren, Kelley, and Robertson all continue to be exceptional and Aceves is good enough as a long man, I’d be nice to have some non-Billings rotation depth.

        • Dalek Jeter

          It’d be nice*

        • Dalek Jeter

          decisions*

          Daleks shouldn’t post when drinking.

    • nsalem

Another out loud thought is what happens when Cervelli is ready if Mr. Murphy continues playing well?

    • nycsportzfan

      +1

  • Dalek Jeter

Petition to have Axisa write about “the Derek Jeter Problem” at least once a week.

    • Winter

As long as he’s required to use Girardi’s “I wasn’t hired to put on a farewell tour” quote in every post.

  • Winter

Oh my god, Gardner sucks. DFA him.

    • vicki

this whole squad is a bummer. they were on pace to score forty-five runs but they just lay down like dogs.

      • nsalem

but the Angels were on pace to give up 27 unearned runs.

  • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

    77 pitches through 6 innings.

  • Dalek Jeter

Man, can’t his name be pronounced “Ko-hen” and not “Khan”

    • Steinbrenner’s Ghost
      • Dalek Jeter

That’s why, I hear KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN every time they say his name.

        • RetroRob

He is no more Khan than Cumberbatch was Khan. There is only one.

          http://www.nexusroute.co.uk/wp.....8/khan.jpg

          • Macho Man “Randy Levine”

Yea, but Cumberbatch was still one of the best things about that movie.

            • Dalek Jeter

+1 Cumberbatch and Quinto absolutely stole the show in that movie.

            • RetroRob

Cumberbatch is excellent. I’m a fan. He’s a better actor than Montalbon, but Montalbon owned that character. Tough to compete, especially since the script for Into Darkness wasn’t that strong.

  • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

  • Dalek Jeter

I’m guessing this is to just get Betances some work…because he has really proved that he’s better than low leverage roles, but hasn’t pitched in a good few days and there is an off day tomorrow.

    • Dalek Jeter

HE GAVE UP A WALK! TO DA MOP UP ROLE!

  • No 2013 again

Roberts’ arm is so weak… painful to watch

    • Winter

      I think we’re just used to Cano…

      …And now I’m sad.

      • RetroRob

Right. Roberts’ arm for a 2B’man is standard. A lot of second basemen end up there because they don’t have the arm strength to play short or third. We just had nearly a decade of Cano’s arm.

      • Dalek Jeter

I know the off season is incredibly different if we sign Cano…but imagine a line up of:

        Ellsbury
        Jeter
        Cano
        Teixeira
        Beltran
        McCann
        Soriano
        Gardner
        Solarte

Lots of lefties…but also lots of REALLY good hitters.

        • Winter

Jeez, there are only two righties in that lineup!

Still not as weird as the 2012 Indians, who had exactly one right-handed regular — Shelly Duncan, who only played in 81 games.

          • Dalek Jeter

Also, 2 switch hitters, so it’s not like there would be 7 LHH in the line up unless the pitcher was a righty.

            • Winter

              That Yankees lineup has 2R/3S/4L

The 2012 Indians lineup had 1R/2S/6L… and that 1R only played in half their games.

              • Dalek Jeter

Yeah, I was talking about the Yankee line up. sorry, I forgot about Solarte down there at the bottom being a S

              • Dalek Jeter

Also, Shelley “Smash” Duncan played in 81(!!!) games on a major league team as recently as 2012?!

                • Winter

                  And he played well!

Ok, I’m lying, he hit .203 with an 87 wRC+

      • vicki

so much this. and i’ve been a roberts defender.

    • nsalem

He was on his ass ass.

    • nsalem

95% of your comments are painful. All you do is criticize Yankee players. What’s the deal with that???

  • nsalem

Uh Oh whose that tying run on deck

  • TheRealGreg

Don’t go back into the doghouse

    • Dalek Jeter

Fingers crossed that he didn’t. Joe seems to have Betances chained to a really short leash right outside the dog house at all times in the early season.

      • RetroRob

I don’t think he was ever in the doghouse. He was just in proving mode. Girardi has continually increased his leverage situations. Nothing happened that last inning that would cause an issue.

        • Dalek Jeter

He did walk a guy, and allow a hit, and one of the outs he got was a pretty hard line drive. Don’t get me wrong, I love Betances on an almost creepy level, and I think Girardi is a good manager BUT he seems to be falling into the Joe Torre method of “trusts like 4 guys and no one else.” And Betances (mostly because he was AWFUL in that Toronto game) fell very quickly out of that circle of trust.

  • KluangYankee

Dont look now, but Solarte is leading the team in RBIs and batting .309

    • nsalem

Plus he’s making 90 times less than our last third baseman.

      • nsalem

        60 times less

  • Dalek Jeter

    The Serial Killer strikes again!

  • vicki

nick maronda, you just got serial killed.

    • vicki

      okay, that was rasmus.

  • Dalek Jeter

    Haha, what an idiot.

  • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

    Murph comes through.

  • No 2013 again

    MurpH!!!

  • TheRealGreg

Why didn’t Murphy go there? That ball was a good 10-20 feet up the line

  • No 2013 again

even when he finally hits something hard, he makes an out.. Hopefully it’s a sign of getting out of this slump

    • Dalek Jeter

I think so, if he keeps hitting the ball like he did tonight, it’s only a matter of time before it turns around.

    • TheRealGreg

He’s had that twice tonight. Remember Pujols robbed him earlier

  • RetroRob

Nice swing. Just missed it. Hopefully a sign he’s snapping out of his slump.

  • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

    damn, thats out in NY.

    • Winter

Way out. It’s 350 down the line in Anaheim, 314 (likely even less) down the line in New York.

  • Winter

I though Beltran got all of that. Still hit it really hard, which is good.

  • Dalek Jeter

Beltran is so close to exploding out of this slump. He really needs a “The Carlos Beltran Problem” post. You’ll see I’m right when McCann starts a hot streak on Friday.

  • Dalek Jeter

Hah, I love Betances but there are pitches where he clearly has NO CLUE where the ball is going.

  • Tom

I wonder, given the score, if Joe pulls Jeter out after warmups (either this inning or next) so he can get an ovation coming off the field. Would be better than a straight sub where Ryan comes out of the dugout.

    • vicki

      little much, i’d say.

  • Winter

Damn, Tanaka-Gallardo is going to be a fun matchup. Which of course means both starters will implode and it’ll be 8-6 by the fifth, or something like that.

  • Winter

Masahiro Tanaka: Career .081/.079/.108 hitter in Japan over 42 PA — Quick, someone overanalyze that!

  • TheRealGreg

Again, this is why Joe is hesitant to put him in in high leverage situations

    • TWTR

The more he is used, the more he gets used to it.

  • Dalek Jeter

Dat Curve. (Seriously, that wasn’t even that good of a curve, but Betances’ curve is so sweet. )

  • Dalek Jeter

Man, Betances is getting a pretty tight strike zone.

  • Dalek Jeter

Fucking shitty off the end of the bat shitty hits spoiling good pitches.

  • TheRealGreg

Why was Ellsbury shifted away from that area?

    • Dalek Jeter

It looked like he was pretty much playing straight away center, just really deep. 9-1 game I’m not going to lose much sleep except for the fact that it gave my favorite bullpener an ER on a really good pitch.

      • TheRealGreg

I know. It was just curious to me.

  • Dalek Jeter

0-5 3Ks. Love ya Sori, but I’m happy for you you’re getting a day off tomorrow.

  • Wolfgang’s Fault

Disagree with having Ellsbury play so deep in a 9-1 game. With just one man on, so what if Kron hits it over his head, it’s a meaningless run. With an 8 run lead, play for the out – not to defense against a run scoring. In a closer game, different story.

  • Dalek Jeter

Going into the off day on 2 straight wins is nice, and I wouldn’t have it any other way (besides more straight wins going into the off day). However I have to think, I wonder if they lose any momentum. Here’s hoping the old adage about “momentum only being as strong as your next starting pitcher” rings true and Tanakamania can run wild on Milwaukee.

    • TheRealGreg

Well the good news is that Milwaukee has not been playing well since Braun went to the DL.

    • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

A Baltimore loss would have been nice.

      • Dalek Jeter

Way too early in the season for me to consider scoreboard watching.

  • http://www.staggeringbeauty.com/ ALZ

Angels are a good team. I’m content with 2 of 3.

  • Dalek Jeter

    All around nice solid win!

  • RetroRob

A series win against the Los Angeles Anaheim Orange County Angels in their house-of-horrors park feels like three series wins.
