Game 33: Win and Rest

(Stephen Dunn/Getty)

By Anaheim standards, the first two games of this series against the Angels haven’t been that bad. Considering the Yankees walked five straight batters (including three with the bases loaded!) to lose Monday’s game, that tells you just how ridiculous things usually get in this ballpark. Hopefully I didn’t just jinx it. The Yankees have a chance to escape with their first series win in Angels Stadium since the middle of the 2011 season with a win tonight.

David Phelps and Hiroki Kuroda both turned in very strong starts in the last two games, and now it’s Vidal Nuno‘s turn. I feel like we know what the other four guys in the rotation are, good or bad, but Nuno is something of a mystery. He’s been very good the first time through the order but has gotten tattooed after that, which makes sense given his stuff and profile. These Angels gave him a hard time two starts ago, and now the element of surprise is gone. The Yankees have won the game immediately before each of their scheduled off-days this season, and it would be nice if that trend continues tonight. Here is the Angels lineup and here is the Yankees lineup:

  1. CF Jacoby Ellsbury
  2. SS Derek Jeter
  3. RF Carlos Beltran
  4. 1B Mark Teixeira
  5. DH Alfonso Soriano
  6. 3B Yangervis Solarte
  7. LF Brett Gardner
  8. 2B Brian Roberts
  9. C John Ryan Murphy
    LHP Vidal Nuno

The weather is great in Anaheim, probably. It’s a safe assumption. First pitch is scheduled for a bit after 10pm ET and you can watch on YES. Enjoy the game.

  1. Chip Rodriguez says:

No complaints about the lineup and playing Murphy against a LHP, but I really wish Beltran was DHing instead of Sori.

    • The Other Matt says:

Sori’s numbers against Santiago are pretty good.

    • Dalek Jeter says:

Eh, neither is great in the outfield and Beltran (though he has looked bad out there) has much more experience in RF than Soriano.

      • ALZ says:

Yes, but my big thing is I want them to preserve his knees or year 3 this deal could be awful.

      • The Other Matt says:

If Soriano had any experience in RF prior to this year then we might have seen more of him in RF, as opposed to Beltran. But Soriano just looked so uncomfortable in right field the few times he’s been out there. So much so, that as putrid as Beltran has looked in right field, it probably does serve better to have him out there where he is familiar with the readings of the ball off the bat, and his strong arm can come into play, as opposed to having Soriano out there.

They honestly just need to give Soriano the Lyle Overbay tutorial. Make him take fly balls every day in right field prior to the ball game, until you feel comfortable having him out there. You could always you use Ichiro as a defensive replacement in the late innings, if need be.

    • Winter says:

Beltran’s looked pretty bad in RF, but saying that Soriano has a noodle arm. It’s a lose-lose situation.

  2. Yankeefan91 says:

Hopefully Nuno has a good start if he doesn’t they should have Aceves Pitch his next start.

  3. Dalek Jeter says:

Tonight we defeat the Scioscian Scourge zu Ehren seiner Majestät König Friedrich und dem Vaterland, Preußen.

  4. ALZ says:

    Jeter is a beast

  5. Yankeefan91 says:

Anyone heading to a Yankees game soon ? I’m going on Tuesday hopefully we win i cant believe we got sweep by the Mets last year.

  6. Rolling Doughnut says:

A walk and an error. Let’s capitalize boys

  7. vicki says:

how demoralizing it must be to have your home crowd so vocal for the opposing team.

  8. Yangeddard Solarte says:

Leadoff walk. Bunt him over, Jete.

  9. The Other Matt says:

Collin Cowgill should be expecting to be DFA’d tomorrow.

  10. Yangeddard Solarte says:

The Angels defense is worse than ours! OH MY WHAT WAS THAT RF DOING!

  11. Winter says:

Smart move by Santiago, knowing the Yankees can’t score with bases loaded, none out.

  12. RetroRob says:

Should be scored a hit. A better parting gift.

  13. ALZ says:

    just snuck one by there.

  14. ALZ says:

They better get at least 1 run out of this.

  15. Yangeddard Solarte says:

The old Mark Teixera is back. Now if they could get the rest of the guys going. Put two more runs on here and we’ll be in good shape.

  16. Yangeddard Solarte says:

Got to get multiple runs here with 4-5-6 up against this winless pitcher. Stake Nuno to a big lead early.

  17. Dalek Jeter says:

Shitty hitting by Sori there. But I love this resurgence of Tex. He’s been fun to watch at the plate the last 2 or 3 weeks.

  18. RetroRob says:

Players do have better numbers with the bases loaded, but not all created equal. Tex hits .370; Soriano hits .280.

  19. mike_h says:

need all the runs we can get Nuno is on the mound

  20. The Other Matt says:

Looks like Gardner clipped Pujols wrist there.

  21. ALZ says:

crummy hit by gardner, but got the job done.

  22. TheRealGreg says:

Santiago twisted his knee and Pujols almost got Bubba Crosby’d

  23. Yangeddard Solarte says:

Angels defense unraveling here and now Pujols is injured.

  24. RetroRob says:

That’s right, Michael. You’re the only one obsessed with Pujols, who is fine. It’s Santiago is the one they’re concerned about.

  25. The Other Matt says:

Random: Don’t know if anyone listens to his music, but doesn’t Howie Kendrick resemble Frank Ocean a bit?

  26. nycsportzfan says:

4-0 Baby! Tex is poised for a big yr!

  27. ALZ says:

Sure this isn’t the little league team?

  28. ALZ says:

    BROB with the clutch hit.

  29. RetroRob says:

    Thankfully they didn’t cut Roberts.

  30. YesWeMcCann says:

what’s fat mike whining about now?

  31. Yangeddard Solarte says:

5 runs should be enough for Vidal Nuney.

  32. The Guns of Navarone says:

    Well, alright then.

  33. Dalek Jeter says:

I’m loving this game thus far. We’ve needed an inning like this for a good long while.

As I say that though, shitty shitty baserunning by Roberts. The Serial Killer is up 2-1, see if you cant get our best all around player (Ells) another AB with people on base.

  34. YesWeMcCann says:

That inning dropped my blood pressure a few points.

  35. OldYanksFan says:

One hard hit ball… 5 Runs. Good Karma.

  36. Winter says:

Phew. Trout juuuuust got under that.

  37. ALZ says:

    go run into Pujols cowgill

  38. OldYanksFan says:

Is ARod still alive? You guys remember him? I have not heard as much as a peep about him since the day after he dropped his lawsuit.

    • Dalek Jeter says:

Well he’s suspended for the season. I mean maybe he’s working out at the complex in Tampa, but he’s not allowed int he clubhouse at all so why would we hear anything?

    • Yankeefan91 says:

Ive heard hes going to a lot of college baseball games and talking to a lot of players.

  39. The Other Matt says:

  40. ALZ says:

nice that jeter got that hr out the way.

  41. Yankeefan91 says:

The Orioles need to offer a job to Ken Singleton lol the guy doesn’t shut up about his former team sheshhhh.

  42. Dalek Jeter says:

  43. Get Phelps Up says:

Too bad he didn’t retire after Sunday’s game.

  44. RetroRob says:

    Thankfully they didn’t cut Jeter.

  45. The Guns of Navarone says:

Geez, seems like there are more Yankees fans there than there were in any game during the last homestand.

  46. Yankeefan91 says:

Angel Stadium Sounds like the old Yankee stadium after that Derek Jeter HR.

  47. Captain Turbohiro Tanaka says:

Well, that was fun. Tune into the game late and they’re up 6-0. I’m going to miss the first two innings for the rest of the season.

  48. ALZ says:

    I’ll take the out.

  49. RetroRob says:

So does Scott Boras own that box right behind home plate? There are other people in there, but he’s always standing up like it’s his lair.

  50. TheRealGreg says:

If he walks McDonald, get him out of there.

  51. nycsportzfan says:

Cappy with the shot! Cappy coming around!

  52. nsalem says:

Walking John McDonald would be a bad sign.

  53. Yankeefan91 says:

Nuno how the hell do you walk John McDonald are you serious.

  54. TheRealGreg says:

    Get him out of there

  55. TheRealGreg says:

    Nuno got very lucky

  56. ALZ says:

    Whew, thats over.

  57. Cuso says:

    Jet lag wore off finally

  58. ALZ says:

    Soriano swings at everything….

  59. Yangeddard Solarte says:

This kid just keeps hitting and hitting and hitting. Sac fly and a seeing eye single tonight. .300 avg, .400 OBP, there’s nothing more that you can ask from this kid.

  60. nsalem says:

Apparently Yangervis has adjusted to others adjustments. He’s cost controlled to. How sweet it is.

  61. Chip Rodriguez says:

Awesome, into the Angels bullpen already. I like.

  62. nsalem says:

The pitcher who flipped the ball to Frank Robinson was Jim Barr. I remember it well.

    • Macho Man "Randy Levine" says:

You’d think someone would know better than to show up Frank Friggin’ Robinson.

  63. Dalek Jeter says:

shitty Babip luck by Gardy there, no runners on that’s probably up the middle for a single.

  64. ALZ says:

did they just tell us brob has 4 steals without being caught this year?

  65. The Other Matt says:

Nice quick inning there by Nuno.

  66. ALZ says:

vidal only likes facing the big guns?

    • Dalek Jeter says:

He also seems to pitch a lot better from the full wind up. Idk if it’s a confidence thing, but when he’s got nobody on base he’s right on the rubber ready to go pitch after pitch. However when he gets a runner on he gets to Josh Beckett like speeds.

  67. Dalek Jeter says:

  68. Captain Turbohiro Tanaka says:

John Ryan Murphy is just too long to say. He should shorten it to like J.R. Murphy or something.

  69. Dalek Jeter says:

I have a drinking problem: I need to sit up to continue drinking but I want to lay down.

  70. Dalek Jeter says:

    Man, this umpiring crew though.

  71. Yankeefan91 says:

i wonder if those Ichiro look a likes are the same ones that used to go to the mariners game.

  72. Dalek Jeter says:

Nice! I’d like to see at least 2 more runs here.

  73. The Guns of Navarone says:

Boy, the Angels are every bit as bad defensively as the Yankees. They pulled this shit at the Stadium, too

  74. Winter says:

    Good baserunning there.

  75. TheRealGreg says:

Beltran just can’t catch a break

  76. Dalek Jeter says:

Nice play by Pujols and Beltran hit the ball hard there. Closer game I’m probably upset, but hey, he hit the ball hard and got semi-robbed by Pujols

    Teixeira’s play: hugely disappointing.

  77. Captain Turbohiro Tanaka says:

    Teixeira, you suck.

  78. TheRealGreg says:

Son of a bitch. If they didn’t have 6 runs, that would really piss me off

  79. YankeeDJW says:

Meh, that better not come back to bite us. 5 runs against this team doesn’t seem like much. Then again, we’ve got Nuno dealing on the mound. At least it’s not CC…

  80. Yangervis says:

    pathetic from Tex

  81. Macho Man "Randy Levine" says:

Damn. Even when they’re doing well, they still find ways to suck.

  82. Dalek Jeter says:

Man, Tex has been our best player short of Ellsbury this season, and had a 2 run double with the bases loaded 3 innings ago, and he gets turned on immediately. RAB, you shouldn’t (because I should be used to it), but you still disappoint me sometimes.

    • nsalem says:

Some people judge players on what they did in the last 60 seconds. Although there is a good argument that this is an extremely viewpoint it certainly is their right to express themselves in said fashion. Better that they vent their frustrations here than in a watchtower with an automatic weapon.

  83. Captain Turbohiro Tanaka says:

At least Nuno is doing his best impersonation of a major league pitcher tonight.

  84. No 2013 again says:

damn.. the few innings that I miss the offense explodes

  85. nycsportzfan says:

Nuno doing his thing so far

  86. ALZ says:

Gardner’s bat is just for show.

    • nsalem says:

How come his lifetime OBP is around 20 points over league average then?

      • Cuso says:

That seems like you’re reinforcing his point in a way.

One could say high OBP guys bats are just “for show.”

        • nsalem says:

Except he’s hitting .278 which is also above league average.
I took it as criticism but maybe I’m wrong. Wouldn’t be the first time.

          • ALZ says:

I like gardner. Just have to admit he doesn’t swing at a whole lot.

            • nsalem says:

Definitely agree, but is that a bad thing. His P/PA is 4.06 which is 23rd in the AL. In past years he has been in the top 10. He goes deep in the count and visually it makes his K’s seem extremely frustrating. K/PA rate lifetime is 1/5.46 which isn’t terrible though. I do see your point.

  87. nsalem says:

Woops Brian thinks he has transformed into a power hitter overnight.
    AKA Len Dykstra disease.

  88. nsalem says:

14 outs on 57 pitches good job so far Vidal.

  89. Macho Man "Randy Levine" says:

Ugh. They were never officially called the Pilgrims.

  90. Cuso says:

    Looks pretty comfortable now

  91. nycsportzfan says:

Can’t wait to see Betances blow away some Angels later. Nuno and Betances combo baby!

  92. Steinbrenner's Ghost says:

Sure helps when the Angels are in “we gotta fly outta here in a couple of hours to Toronto mode”.

  93. Dalek Jeter says:

Just thinking out loud: if Phelps can do what he did a couple days ago and Nuno can do what he’s doing tonight for the next couple weeks and Pineda comes back healthy I’d almost rather send one of them down to the minors to stay stretched out in case of injury than have them bounce back into the bullpen.

  94. Dalek Jeter says:

Petition to have Axisa write about “the Derek Jeter Problem” at least once a week.

    • Winter says:

As long as he’s required to use Girardi’s “I wasn’t hired to put on a farewell tour” quote in every post.

  95. Winter says:

Oh my god, Gardner sucks. DFA him.

  96. ALZ says:

    77 pitches through 6 innings.

  97. Dalek Jeter says:

Man, can’t his name be pronounced “Ko-hen” and not “Khan”

  98. vicki says:

    viva vidal.

  99. Dalek Jeter says:

I’m guessing this is to just get Betances some work…because he has really proved that he’s better than low leverage roles, but hasn’t pitched in a good few days and there is an off day tomorrow.

  100. No 2013 again says:

Roberts’ arm is so weak… painful to watch

    • Winter says:

      I think we’re just used to Cano…

      …And now I’m sad.

      • RetroRob says:

Right. Roberts’ arm for a 2B’man is standard. A lot of second basemen end up there because they don’t have the arm strength to play short or third. We just had nearly a decade of Cano’s arm.

      • Dalek Jeter says:

I know the off season is incredibly different if we sign Cano…but imagine a line up of:

Lots of lefties…but also lots of REALLY good hitters.

        • Winter says:

Jeez, there are only two righties in that lineup!

Still not as weird as the 2012 Indians, who had exactly one right-handed regular — Shelly Duncan, who only played in 81 games.

          • Dalek Jeter says:

Also, 2 switch hitters, so it’s not like there would be 7 LHH in the line up unless the pitcher was a righty.

      • vicki says:

so much this. and i’ve been a roberts defender.

    • nsalem says:

He was on his ass ass.

    • nsalem says:

95% of your comments are painful. All you do is criticize Yankee players. What’s the deal with that???

  101. nsalem says:

Uh Oh whose that tying run on deck

  102. TheRealGreg says:

Don’t go back into the doghouse

    • Dalek Jeter says:

Fingers crossed that he didn’t. Joe seems to have Betances chained to a really short leash right outside the dog house at all times in the early season.

      • RetroRob says:

I don’t think he was ever in the doghouse. He was just in proving mode. Girardi has continually increased his leverage situations. Nothing happened that last inning that would cause an issue.

        • Dalek Jeter says:

He did walk a guy, and allow a hit, and one of the outs he got was a pretty hard line drive. Don’t get me wrong, I love Betances on an almost creepy level, and I think Girardi is a good manager BUT he seems to be falling into the Joe Torre method of “trusts like 4 guys and no one else.” And Betances (mostly because he was AWFUL in that Toronto game) fell very quickly out of that circle of trust.

  103. KluangYankee says:

Dont look now, but Solarte is leading the team in RBIs and batting .309

  104. Dalek Jeter says:

    The Serial Killer strikes again!

  105. vicki says:

nick maronda, you just got serial killed.

  106. Dalek Jeter says:

    Haha, what an idiot.

  107. ALZ says:

    Murph comes through.

  108. No 2013 again says:

  109. TheRealGreg says:

Why didn’t Murphy go there? That ball was a good 10-20 feet up the line

  110. No 2013 again says:

even when he finally hits something hard, he makes an out.. Hopefully it’s a sign of getting out of this slump

  111. RetroRob says:

Nice swing. Just missed it. Hopefully a sign he’s snapping out of his slump.

  112. ALZ says:

    damn, thats out in NY.

  113. Winter says:

I though Beltran got all of that. Still hit it really hard, which is good.

  114. Dalek Jeter says:

Beltran is so close to exploding out of this slump. He really needs a “The Carlos Beltran Problem” post. You’ll see I’m right when McCann starts a hot streak on Friday.

  115. Dalek Jeter says:

Hah, I love Betances but there are pitches where he clearly has NO CLUE where the ball is going.

  116. Tom says:

I wonder, given the score, if Joe pulls Jeter out after warmups (either this inning or next) so he can get an ovation coming off the field. Would be better than a straight sub where Ryan comes out of the dugout.

  117. Winter says:

Damn, Tanaka-Gallardo is going to be a fun matchup. Which of course means both starters will implode and it’ll be 8-6 by the fifth, or something like that.

  118. Winter says:

Masahiro Tanaka: Career .081/.079/.108 hitter in Japan over 42 PA — Quick, someone overanalyze that!

  119. TheRealGreg says:

Again, this is why Joe is hesitant to put him in in high leverage situations

  120. Dalek Jeter says:

Dat Curve. (Seriously, that wasn’t even that good of a curve, but Betances’ curve is so sweet. )

  121. Dalek Jeter says:

Man, Betances is getting a pretty tight strike zone.

  122. Dalek Jeter says:

Fucking shitty off the end of the bat shitty hits spoiling good pitches.

  123. TheRealGreg says:

Why was Ellsbury shifted away from that area?

    • Dalek Jeter says:

It looked like he was pretty much playing straight away center, just really deep. 9-1 game I’m not going to lose much sleep except for the fact that it gave my favorite bullpener an ER on a really good pitch.

  124. Dalek Jeter says:

0-5 3Ks. Love ya Sori, but I’m happy for you you’re getting a day off tomorrow.

  125. Wolfgang's Fault says:

Disagree with having Ellsbury play so deep in a 9-1 game. With just one man on, so what if Kron hits it over his head, it’s a meaningless run. With an 8 run lead, play for the out – not to defense against a run scoring. In a closer game, different story.

  126. Dalek Jeter says:

Going into the off day on 2 straight wins is nice, and I wouldn’t have it any other way (besides more straight wins going into the off day). However I have to think, I wonder if they lose any momentum. Here’s hoping the old adage about “momentum only being as strong as your next starting pitcher” rings true and Tanakamania can run wild on Milwaukee.

  127. ALZ says:

Angels are a good team. I’m content with 2 of 3.

  128. Dalek Jeter says:

    All around nice solid win!

  129. RetroRob says:

A series win against the Los Angeles Anaheim Orange County Angels in their house-of-horrors park feels like three series wins.
