Mailbag: Iwakuma, First Innings, Paxton, Bird, Expansion

Triple-A Scranton (2-1 win over Indianapolis)

  • SS Cole Figueroa: 0-3
  • CF Jose Pirela & LF Ramon Flores: both 0-4
  • 2B Rob Refsnyder: 0-3, 1 K
  • 1B Greg Bird: 0-2, 1 E, 2 BB — he’s reached base multiple times in each of his last five games
  • C Gary Sanchez: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 SB — keeps raising that trade value
  • RF Tyler Austin: 0-3, 2 K
  • RHP Diego Moreno: 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 2/1 GB/FB — 37 of 53 pitches were strikes (70%)
  • RHP Jose Ramirez: 3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 4/2 GB/FB — 23 of 41 pitches were strikes (56%)
  • RHP Johnny Barbato: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, 3/0 GB/FB — 17 pitches, nine strikes (53%) … Triple-A debut for the guy who came over from the Padres in the Shawn Kelley trade
  • RHP Nick Goody: 1 IP, zeroes, 2 K — eleven of 15 pitches were strikes (73%) … 70/14 K/BB in 48.1 innings … ranks seventh in the system in strikeouts, and all six of the guys ahead of him have thrown at least 20 more innings

Double-A Trenton (7-3 win over Binghamton)

  • CF Jake Cave: 0-5, 1 R, 1 K
  • 2B Tony Renda: 2-3, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 E (throwing, fielding) — left the game after popping out in the fifth for an unknown reason with a thumb injury, according to Matt Kardos
  • RF Mark Payton: 2-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB
  • RHP Joel De La Cruz: 4.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 1 WP, 10/2 GB/FB — 53 of 86 pitches were strikes (62%)
  • RHP Andrew Bailey: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 0/1 GB/FB — 23 of 35 pitches were strikes (66%) … he’s gone two innings a few times and has also pitched in back-to-back games, and so far everything seems to be going well … I wonder if the Yankees will bring him up after the trade deadline to replace Branden Pinder if they don’t make a trade for another reliever

High-A Tampa (7-4 loss to Fort Myers)

  • 2B Tyler Wade: 2-5, 1 RBI
  • SS Abi Avelino: 1-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 K
  • CF Dustin Fowler: 2-5, 1 RBI, 1 K — 12-for-38 (.316) in his last ten games
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 1-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 E (throwing) — 19-for-57 (.333) with four walks and four strikeouts in his last 16 games
  • LHP Jordan Montgomery: 5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 8/1 GB/FB — 56 of 94 pitches were strikes (60%)

Low-A Charleston (5-2 loss to Delmarva)

  • SS Jorge Mateo: 2-4, 1 2B, 2 E (fielding, throwing) — the stolen bases are getting all the attention, but he’s also hitting .310/.399/.411 with 17 walks and 21 strikeouts in his last 35 games
  • CF Austin Aune: 1-4, 1 RBI, 3 K — the quintessential Austin Aune game
  • RF Alex Palma: 0-3, 1 K, 1 E (fielding)
  • RHP Joey Maher: 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 7/2 GB/FB — 47 of 72 pitches were strikes (65%)
  • RHP Chance Adams: 2 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 3 K, 1 WP, 2/1 GB/FB — 29 of 52 pitches were strikes (56%) … this year’s fifth rounder came into the game with a 20/3 K/BB in 14.1 innings

Short Season Staten Island (12-4 win over Mahoning Valley)

  • CF Jeff Hendrix: 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 2 BB
  • SS Kyle Holder: 1-6, 1 RBI, 1 K
  • 2B Thairo Estrada: 0-5, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K
  • RF Jhalan Jackson: 1-4, 2 R, 1 RBI, 3 K, 1 E (fielding) — 29 strikeouts in 90 plate appearances (32.2%)
  • 3B Brandon Wagner: 1-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K — 21/18 K/BB in 23 games for this year’s sixth rounder
  • RHP Luis Cedeno: 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 1 WP, 4/4 GB/FB — 49 or 78 pitches were strikes (63%)
  • LHP Josh Rogers: 2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 1 HB, 0/4 GB/FB — 20 of 31 pitches were strikes (65%)

Rookie level Pulaski (5-2 loss to Kingsport)

  • CF Carlos Vidal: 0-4, 1 K
  • SS Hyo-Jun Park: 1-4, 1 K
  • 2B Gosuke Katoh: 1-3, 1 BB — 22-for-67 (.328) with 16 walks and 21 strikeouts in his last 20 games … well, we know he can hit rookie ball pitchers, but what about full season league pitchers?
  • LHP Nestor Cortes: 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 4/5 GB/FB — only four innings for Nasty Nestor tonight because they wanted to give the other team a chance, I assume … 34/3 K/BB in 33.1 innings this year and 92/13 K/BB in 83.1 pro innings

Rookie level GCL Yanks1 were rained out. They’ll make this game up as part of a doubleheader on August 8th.

Rookie level GCL Yanks2 had their game suspended due to rain in the fourth inning. They’ll finish the game on August 7th. Here’s the box score.
