DotF: September call-up candidates have big games in Scranton’s win

Game 130: Back in Boston
Blown opportunities send Yankees to 4-3 loss to Red Sox

Got some notes to pass along:

  • Brian Cashman told Dan Barbarisi that C Gary Sanchez (hamstring) will not be part of the first wave of September call-ups tomorrow. He’s still hurting. That makes C Austin Romine the odds on favorite to be the third catcher down the stretch, at least until Sanchez gets healthy.
  • SS Jorge Mateo was placed on the High-A Tampa DL retroactive to Saturday, reports Nick Flammia. Mateo recently suffered some kind of leg injury running the bases. Tampa’s season ends Sunday and they’re not going to the playoffs, so Mateo’s season may be over.
  • OF Michael O’Neill and OF Trey Amburgey were named the Offensive Players of the Week in the High-A Florida State League and Short Season NY-Penn League, respectively. Also, LHP Jordan Montgomery was named the FSL Pitcher of the Week.
  • Late Update: OF Jake Cave, RHP Mark Montgomery, RHP Conor Mullee, and RHP Cesar Vargas have all been promoted to Triple-A Scranton, reports Josh Norris and Meister Sports. They’re all filling roster spots in the wave of September call-ups.

Triple-A Scranton (6-4 win over Buffalo)

  • CF Ben Gamel: 2-5, 2 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI — tenth homer of the year … he hit ten homers total from 2010-14
  • DH Rob Refsnyder: 2-5, 2 2B, 1 RBI — with rosters expanding tomorrow, I guess there is a non-zero chance this is the final Triple-A game he ever plays
  • 2B Dustin Ackley: 3-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 E (fielding) — played a full nine innings for the first time as part of his rehab … we’ll see him when rosters expand tomorrow
  • LF Jose Pirela: 0-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K
  • RF Aaron Judge: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI
  • C Austin Romine: 1-5, 1 K, 1 PB — assuming he’s the third catcher in September, I’m kinda surprised they let him catch tonight given the risk of injury
  • RHP Brady Lail: 6 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 7/1 GB/FB — 59 of 95 pitches were strikes (62%) … he’s at 145.1 innings this year after throwing 134.1 last year
  • RHP Chris Martin: 2 IP, zeroes, 2 K, 4/1 GB/FB — 20 of 27 pitches were strikes (74%)
  • RHP Nick Rumbelow: 1 IP, zeroes, 2/1 GB/FB — ten pitches, six strikes

Double-A Trenton (4-1 loss to New Britain)

  • CF Jake Cave: 1-4, 1 R
  • SS Tyler Wade: 1-4
  • RF Tyler Austin: 0-4, 1 K — wonder if he’s going to lose his 40-man roster spot to make room for a call-up tomorrow
  • 2B Tony Renda: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 E (throwing)
  • LHP Caleb Smith: 5.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 7/1 GB/FB — 64 of 107 pitches were strikes (60%)

High-A Tampa Game One (10-6 loss to Dunedin) completion of yesterday’s game, which was suspended due to rain with one out in the top of the fifth

  • SS Abi Avelino: 2-5, 2 R, 1 K, 1 SB, 1 E (fielding) — 28-for-80 (.350) with eight walks and eight strikeouts in his last 20 games
  • CF Dustin Fowler: 1-5 — threw a runner out at second
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 0-4, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 E (fielding)
  • LHP Dietrich Enns: 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 1/6 GB/FB — pitched yesterday

High-A Tampa Game Two was rained out. They’ll play a doubleheader tomorrow.

Low-A Charleston Game One (6-1 loss to Asheville) makeup of yesterday’s rainout

  • SS Angel Aguilar: 0-2, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 E (fielding)
  • LF Austin Aune: 0-3
  • RF Alex Palma: 0-3, 1 K — just back after a quick little ten-day DL stint
  • RHP Daris Vargas: 5.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 10/0 GB/FB — 56 of 94 pitches were strikes (60%)

Low-A Charleston Game Two (1-0 win over Asheville)

  • SS Angel Aguilar: 0-2, 1 K
  • RF Alex Palma: 1-3
  • LHP Justin Kamplain:

Short Season Staten Island (6-2 win over Connecticut) they are 36-32 and tied atop the McNamara with a week left to go in the season … the second place team won’t necessarily get the wildcard spot either, so they’re in a tight race

  • LF Zack Zehner: 4-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 SB
  • CF Jeff Hendrix: 1-4, 1 R, 2 K
  • RF Trey Amburgey: 1-3, 2 R, 1 BB — just doesn’t stop hitting
  • 3B Brandon Wagner: 1-4, 1 K
  • SS Kyle Holder: 0-4, 1 R, 2 K, 1 SB
  • RHP Kolton Mahoney: 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, 2 HB, 8/3 GB/FB — 53 of 81 pitches were strikes (65%) … 41/11 K/BB in 48 innings for this year’s 16th rounder, who missed two years while on a Mormon mission

Rookie Pulaski (10-0 win over Johnson City) their season ends tomorrow … they’ve already clinched the best record in the league and will start the postseason Thursday

  • CF Carlos Vidal: 3-5, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 K — .303/.389/.492 in 60 games for the 19-year-old
  • SS Hyo-Jun Park: 1-4, 2 R, 2 BB, 1 K — five walks and four strikeouts in his last six games
  • 2B Gosuke Katoh: 2-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
  • LF Nathan Mikolas: 2-4, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB
  • RHP Simon De La Rosa: 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 6 K, 2/3 GB/FB — 67/37 K/BB in 53.1 innings for the 22-year-old … he’s lined up to start the potential Game Three of their best-of-three first round series

The regular season is over for the two Rookie GCL Yanks affiliates. Neither qualified for the postseason.
