DotF: Finley pitches Pulaski to a win on final day of season

September 1, 2015 by Mike Leave a Comment

Game 131: Big Mike in Boston
Pineda's pitching and Drew's clutch hit lead the Yankees to a 3-1 win in Fenway

Some notes to pass along:

  • OF Slade Heathcott was not among the first wave of September call-ups nor did he lose his 40-man roster spot. As it turns out, he’s banged up. Donnie Collins says it’s his quad, which landed Slade on the DL for a few months earlier this season. Sucks.
  • To help cover following all the call-ups, RHP Mark Montgomery, RHP Cesar Vargas, RHP Conor Mullee, IF Ali Castillo, IF Cito Culver, IF Rob Segedin, OF Jake Cave, C Kyle Higashioka were all promoted to Triple-A Scranton, reports Chad Jennings.
  • OF Ben Gamel was named the Triple-A International League Rookie of the Year. He was also the only Yankees farmhand to make the league’s end-of-season All-Star Team, so congrats to him.
  • And finally, no Yankees farmhands were selected for the Low-A South Atlantic League end-of-season All-Star Team.

Triple-A Scranton (2-1 win over Rochester)

  • CF Ben Gamel: 0-4, 1 BB, 1 K
  • 2B Ali Castillo: 3-5, 1 2B, 1 SB — at least September call-ups allowed them to upgrade at second for the postseason (kidding/trolling)
  • RF Aaron Judge: 0-4, 3 K
  • LF Slade Heathcott: 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K — quad can’t be too bad if he’s running around the outfield
  • SS Gregorio Petit: 2-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
  • RHP Kyle Davies: 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 1 WP, 3/6 GB/FB, 1 E (fielding) — 58 of 90 pitches were strikes (64%)
  • RHP Mark Montgomery: 1 IP, zeroes, 2 K, 0/1 GB/FB — ten pitches, eight strikes
  • RHP Nick Goody: 1 IP, zeroes, 1 K, 0/1 GB/FB — eight pitches, five strikes

Double-A Trenton (7-1 loss to New Britain) they’re limping to the finish line, that’s four losses in their last five games … they should be officially eliminated from postseason play within two or three days

  • SS Tyler Wade: 1-4, 2 K
  • 2B Tony Renda: 0-4, 1 K
  • CF Mark Payton: 0-3, 1 K
  • RHP Cale Coshow: 5.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 2 WP, 8/4 GB/FB, 1 E (fielding) — 66 of 104 pitches were strikes (63%) … 94/31 K/BB in 107.1 innings

High-A Tampa Game One (2-0 loss to Dunedin in seven innings) makeup of yesterday’s rainout

  • SS Abi Avelino & CF Dustin Fowler: both 0-3
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 1-3, 2 K — his second inning single was their only hit of the game
  • RHP Jonathan Holder: 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 3/8 GB/FB — 86/21 K/BB in 106.1 innings as a starter this season … he was a reliever in college and never threw more than 54.2 innings in a season

High-A Tampa Game Two (3-1 loss to Dunedin)

  • 2B Abi Avelino: 2-3, 1 SB — multiple hits in ten of his last 19 games
  • CF Dustin Fowler: 0-3
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 0-2, 1 BB
  • SS Yancarlos Baez: 0-2, 2 K, 1 E (throwing) — just called up to help out this last week while SS Jorge Mateo is on the DL
  • RHP Gabe Encinas: 5.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 2 K, 3 WP, 7/5 GB/FB —

Low-A Charleston (4-3 win over Asheville, walk-off style) they set a new attendance record with 285,000 fans this year, so to celebrate they gave away a 1998 Civic with 285,000 miles on it to a random fan tonight … uh, thanks?

  • SS Vince Conde: 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 K
  • RF Austin Aune: 2-4, 2 R, 2 2B — 46 extra-base hits are third most in the system behind Gamel (49) and Judge (48)
  • 3B Donny Sands: 0-4, 1 RBI, 1 K — up for the final week of the season and he won the game with a walk-off fielder’s choice
  • LF Alex Palma: 2-3, 1 CS
  • RHP Matt Wotherspoon: 6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 1 WP, 7/3 GB/FB — 57 of 87 pitches were strikes (66%)

Short Season Staten Island (8-4 loss to Connecticut)

  • CF Jeff Hendrix: 1-5, 1 R
  • DH Trey Amburgey: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 K — fourth homer of the season, and all four have come in his last 14 games
  • 2B Thairo Estrada: 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 BB, 2 K
  • SS Kyle Holder: 2-3, 1 BB — 9-for-28 (.321) since coming off the DL
  • RHP Derek Callahan: 3 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 2/3 GB/FB — 32 of 55 pitches were strikes (58%)

Rookie Pulaski (1-0 win over Johnson City) this was the final game of the regular season … they finished at 45-23, the best record in the league by five games … their first round postseason series against Princeton begins Thursday (best-of-three)

  • SS Hyo-Jun Park: 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K — 19-year-old finishes the regular season at .239/.351/.383 with 34 walks and 50 strikeouts in 56 games
  • LF Nathan Mikolas: 0-4, 2 K
  • RF Frank Frias: 2-4, 1 SB
  • RHP Drew Finley: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 3/1 GB/FB — this year’s third rounder finishes the season with a 41/19 K/BB in 32 innings

The regular season is over for both Rookie GCL Yanks affiliates. Neither qualified for the postseason.
