Thoughts one week into the Grapefruit League season

The Yankees lost 1-0 for the second straight day today. The Marlins did the honors this afternoon. The Yankees have now lost three straight Grapefruit League games. Whatevs. CC Sabathia’s spring debut went well; he struck out two and walked one in two scoreless innings. One scout clocked his fastball at 85-87 mph in the first inning according to Andrew Marchand, which sounds about right for this time of year.

Luis Cessa threw two scoreless and hitless innings behind Sabathia, and Chasen Shreve retired all three men he faced. Nick Rumbelow allowed the day’s only run on two hits and a walk in an inning of work. Those were the only hits the Yankees allowed on the afternoon. Aaron Hicks had two hits while Didi Gregorius, Chase Headley, and Rob Refsnyder each had one. Here’s the box score, here are the day’s photos, and here are the notes from Tampa:

  • Just to change things up, I’ll point you to Brendan Kuty for the day’s workout groups. Half the team is on the other side of Florida, so not much happened at the complex. Aroldis Chapman, Bryan Mitchell, Vicente Campos, and Brady Lail were among those to throw bullpen sessions. That’s about it.
  • Brett Gardner (wrist) took a full round of batting practice on the field today and is getting close to appearing in his first spring game. Pete Kozma (back) went through full drills. Donovan Solano has a lower back issue and will be shut down for a few days. [Erik Boland, Chad Jennings]
  • Chapman will make his spring debut in Thursday’s home game. (The Yankees have split squad games that day.) That will be Nathan Eovaldi’s first spring game as well. Yes, both games will be televised. [Ryan Hatch]
  • Ivan Nova will make his second spring start tomorrow afternoon as the Yankees take on the Mets in Port St. Lucie. That game will indeed be televised, thankfully.

Here is this evening’s open thread. MLB Network will show the Reds and Giants live later tonight, plus all the local hockey and basketball teams are in action except the Devils. There’s no college hoops on the schedule. Have at it.
