DotF: Judge picks up four hits in Scranton’s win

Update: Fluoroscope on McCann's toe comes back negative
Bullpen shines bright in a 3-2 Yankees victory in Toronto

Two quick notes:

  • One scout told Erik Boland that RHP James Kaprielian was “unbelievably good” in his season debut last night. His fastball was up to 97 mph — so the velocity bump has not yet faded — and his slider up to 86 mph. Pretty, pretty good.
  • IF Deibinson Romero has been placed on the Triple-A Scranton DL with an unknown injury, so says Shane Hennigan. They’re currently playing with a 23-man roster, if you can believe that. Soon enough 1B/OF Nick Swisher will join them, though they’ll still be a man short.

Triple-A Scranton (9-1 win over Pawtucket)

  • CF Ben Gamel: 2-5, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB
  • RF Aaron Judge: 4-6, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 K — 9-for-23 (.391) in the early going
  • DH Slade Heathcott: 0-6, 1 R, 4 K — ouch … he’s been pretty great so far though, so shake it off
  • C Gary Sanchez: 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 PB — he’s thrown out all three runners who have tried to steal so far this year
  • 2B Rob Refsnyder: 1-5, 1 R, 1 3B, 1 RBI — first start at second base this year
  • RHP Chad Green: 3.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 4 K, 3/2 GB/FB — 55 of 92 pitches were strikes (60%) … not the most efficient night
  • RHP Conor Mullee: 3.1 IP, zeroes, 6 K, 2/2 GB/FB — 29 of 42 pitches were strikes (69%) … nice night for the three-time Tommy John surgery guy
  • LHP James Pazos: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 2/1 GB/FB — 22 of 39 pitches were strikes (56%)

Double-A Trenton (6-3 loss to Portland in ten innings)

  • 2B Tyler Wade: 0-4, 1 BB, 2 K
  • DH Dustin Fowler: 0-5, 3 K
  • CF Lane Adams: 1-3, 1 BB
  • 1B Tyler Austin: 0-4, 2 K
  • LF Jake Cave: 2-4, 2 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 K — first homer of the year … he hit two homers at this level in 125 games last year
  • 3B Dante Bichette Jr.: — hit a game-tying home run in the seventh
  • LHP Jordan Montgomery: 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 2 K, 1 WP, 5/6 GB/FB — 52 of 92 pitches were strikes (57%) … Double-A will be a good test for him this year
  • RHP Mark Montgomery: 0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 0/1 GB/FB — seven of 13 pitches were strikes (54%) … allowed both runners he inherited in the tenth to score and then some

High-A Tampa (9-4 win over Bradenton)

  • SS Jorge Mateo: 3-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 SB — 9-for-23 (.391) in the early going
  • RF Austin Aune: 0-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 3-5, 1 R, 3 RBI, 1 K, 1 SB — 7-for-18 (.389) so far … hope he keeps this up, he’s been a slow starter all throughout his career
  • 1B Mike Ford: 1-3, 1 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB
  • CF Mark Payton: 3-3, 3 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB — threw a runner out at second
  • RHP Vicente Campos: 4 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 1 WP, 1 HB, 3/4 GB/FB — 36 of 71 pitches were strikes (51%) … this is his last minor league option year … I wonder how much longer they’ll wait before sticking him in the bullpen and trying to make it work that way
  • RHP Eric Ruth: 3 IP, zeroes, 4 K, 1 WP, 2/2 GB/FB — 22 of 32 pitches were strikes (69%) … he was a Double-A All-Star as a starter last season, now he’s in the High-A bullpen … baseball ain’t fair if you’re not a top prospect

Low-A Charleston (2-1 win over Asheville) they’re 5-1 and it took a no-hitter to beat them

  • CF Jeff Hendrix: 0-4, 2 K
  • SS Hoy Jun Park & RF Trey Amburgey: both 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B — Amburgey struck out once
  • DH Jhalan Jackson: 2-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 1 K — very nice start to his season
  • 2B Thairo Estrada: 1-4, 1 K, 1 CS
  • RHP Domingo Acevedo: 6.2 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 K, 2/4 GB/FB — 50 of 67 pitches were strikes (75%) … that’s the good stuff right there … Acevedo can really dominate when he’s on
