Thoughts following yet another early season off-day

Two quick notes:

  • There have been some rumors going around that LHP Justus Sheffield and RHP Chance Adams are hurt, but they’re not. Not sure where that all started. Sheffield is pitching tomorrow and Adams is pitching Thursday, both for Double-A Trenton, according to Matt Kardos. Sheffield’s first start was pushed back by the rainouts late last week.
  • The Yankees have released 1B Connor Spencer, according to Matt Eddy. He was their eighth round pick in 2014. Spencer hit .303/.368/.387 in parts of three minor league seasons. Between college and pro ball, he hit six home runs in 368 games from 2012-16. A first baseman needs a little more pop than that.

Triple-A Scranton (6-0 loss to Lehigh Valley)

  • DH Mason Williams: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K — final game in the organization? the Yankees need to clear a 40-man roster spot for LHP Jordan Montgomery tomorrow
  • RF Clint Frazier: 1-3, 1 BB — Shane Hennigan says he took too wide a turn around first base on the single and was thrown out before he could get back to the bag
  • CF Dustin Fowler: 1-4, 2 K — off to a 3-for-20 (.150) start
  • LF Mark Payton: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 K, 1 E (throwing)
  • RHP Chad Green: 5 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 8 K, 4/3 GB/FB — 63 of 95 pitches were strikes (66%) … he was supposed to start today for Double-A Trenton, but once Montgomery got called up to MLB, the Yankees put him here

Double-A Trenton (6-4 win over Akron)

  • SS Thairo Estrada: 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 K, 1 HBP — he’s been on base 12 times in five games so far
  • 2B Gleyber Torres: 0-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 HBP — first hitless game of the season
  • DH Miguel Andujar: 1-5, 1 RBI, 2 K — had the go-ahead single as part of their four-run ninth inning
  • RF Billy McKinney: 0-3, 1 RBI, 1 CS, 1 HBP — off to a 2-for-15 (.133) start
  • LHP Nestor Cortes: 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 1 HB, 2/3 GB/FB — 40 of 67 pitches were strikes (60%) … starting here after pitching out of the High-A bullpen last week … this was supposed to be Green’s start, but he’s in Triple-A now
  • RHP J.P. Feyereisen: 1.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 2/1 GB/FB — only 22 of 49 pitches were strikes (45%) … yuck

High-A Tampa (2-1 win over Fort Myers)

  • CF Jorge Mateo: 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB — here’s some video of the double … this is his first official game in center field … also, he’s 5-for-5 in steals through five games
  • SS Kyle Holder: 0-3, 1 K, 1 E (throwing)
  • DH Trey Amburgey: 3-4, 1 R, 1 RBI — came into the game 2-for-19 (.105) on the season
  • 3B-1B Mandy Alvarez: 1-4, 1 R
  • RF Jhalan Jackson: 0-4, 4 K — ouch
  • 2B-3B Abi Avelino: 1-4, 2 K
  • LF Austin Aune: 0-4, 3 K
  • LHP Josh Rogers: 6 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 3/10 GB/FB — 57 of 79 pitches were strikes (72%) … he made 20 starts here last season, so I imagine he’ll be in Trenton before long
  • RHP Colten Brewer: 1 IP, zeroes, 1 K, 2/1 GB/FB — 14 of 18 pitches were strikes (78%) for the minor league Rule 5 Draft pickup

Low-A Charleston (7-2 loss to Augusta)

  • SS Hoy Jun Park: 0-4, 1 RBI, 2 K, 1 E (fielding)
  • 2B Diego Castillo: 0-3, 1 BB — first hitless game of the season … he’s 7-for-19 (.368) with three walks and zero strikeouts so far
  • CF Blake Rutherford: 0-4, 2 K, 1 SB — threw a runner out at third
  • C Donny Sands: 1-4, 1 K
  • LF Estevan Florial: 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K — off to a 4-for-18 (.222) start with six strikeouts
  • DH Isiah Gilliam: 0-3
  • RF Leonardo Molina: 0-3, 2 K
  • 3B Oswaldo Cabrera: 1-2, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 BB
  • RHP Nick Green: 4 IP, 4 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 1 WP, 9/1 GB/FB, 1 E (throwing) — 45 of 75 pitches were strikes (60%) … ten runs and 14 baserunners in 6.1 innings through two starts for the third piece in the Carlos Beltran trade
