DotF: Ellsbury doubles in first game of rehab assignment

Offense no-shows as Yankees fall 8-1 to the Rangers
Game 73: Old Timers' Day

Some quick notes:

  • RHP Ronald Herrera and RHP Domingo Acevedo are trading spots. D.J. Eberle says Herrera is going from Double-A Trenton to Triple-A Scranton while Acevedo goes the other way. This might only be a paper move to buy a temporary roster spot. The Yankees did the same thing with Acevedo last week. We’ll see.
  • The Yankees have released RHP Mike Schaub and OF Joe Burton, according to Matt Eddy. Schaub signed out of an independent league two years ago and spent the last two summers in Staten Island. Burton was the team’s 24th round pick last year. I do believe he is the first 2016 draftee the Yankees have released.
  • Mark Sanchez has a neat piece on 2B Nick Solak, so check that out. “Nick plays the game the way it’s supposed to be played. He’s an exceptional baseball player. Plus runner, great bat-to-ball skills,” said farm system head Gary Denbo.

Triple-A Scranton (8-0 loss to Pawtucket)

  • SS Tyler Wade: 0-3, 1 BB, 3 K
  • CF Jacoby Ellsbury: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 SB — here’s video of the double … he played five innings in center field, as scheduled … he’ll play the entire game at DH tomorrow, then join Double-A Trenton on Monday (Scranton is on the road next week and Trenton will be home)
  • LF-CF Dustin Fowler: 0-4, 3 K
  • RF Clint Frazier: 0-2, 2 BB, 1 K — threw a runner out at first … eight walks in his last 13 games
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 E (throwing)
  • LHP Daniel Camarena: 3.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 6/1 GB/FB — 36 of 56 pitches were strikes (64%) … second start back from a shoulder issue … his first start was back with Trenton
  • RHP Brady Lail: 5.1 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 5/4 GB/FB — 53 of 85 pitches were strikes (62%) … not counting RHP Luis Cessa, who is in the big leagues for the time being, the RailRiders currently have seven Triple-A caliber starters for five rotation spots (Lail, Camarena, Herrera, Acevedo, RHP Chance Adams, RHP Bryan Mitchell, LHP Chance Adams) … two guys are going to get squeezed outs, so Lail is in the bullpen for now

Double-A Trenton (8-4 loss to Reading)

  • SS Thairo Estrada: 1-5, 1 E (fielding) — 9-for-30 (.300) during his seven-game hitting streak
  • 2B Abi Avelino: 1-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 E (pickoff)
  • CF Billy McKinney: 0-4, 1 K
  • DH Rashad Crawford: 2-3, 1 BB, 1 SB
  • LHP Justus Sheffield: 4.1 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 1 WP, 5/2 GB/FB — 60 of 93 pitches were strikes (65%) … he allowed eight earned runs total in his last six starts and 39 innings
  • RHP Nick Rumbelow: 1.1 IP, zeroes, 1/2 GB/FB — eleven pitches, eight strikes

High-A Tampa (3-1 win over Dunedin)

  • CF Jorge Mateo: 2-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI — 8-for-27 (.296) during his seven-game hitting streak
  • 2B Nick Solak: 1-4, 1 R, 1 K — 12-for-22 (.545) in his last six games
  • LF Trey Amburgey: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 BB, 2 K
  • SS Kyle Holder: 1-4, 1 E (fielding)
  • RHP Erik Swanson: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 2/1 GB/FB — 32 of 44 pitches were strikes (73%), plus he picked a runner off first … first start since June 2nd … he was on the disabled list with an unknown injury

Low-A Charleston is still playing and the game is taking entirely too long. Here’s the box score. I’m not sticking around for the end of this one. OF Estevan Florial did hit another home run, his sixth in his last 22 games. C Donny Sands also hit his first homer of the season.

Short Season Staten Island (4-3 win over Aberdeen in ten innings, walk-off style)

  • CF Dom Thompson-Williams: 1-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB — walk-off single
  • SS Wilkerman Garcia: 0-1, 1 K, 1 CS — left the game in the third inning after the caught stealing
  • 3B-SS Oswaldo Cabrera: 0-4, 1 R, 1 E (throwing)
  • 1B Dalton Blaser: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI — game-tying home run with two outs in the ninth
  • LF Leonardo Molina: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K
  • 2B Chris Hess: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K — this year’s 17th round is 0-for-10 in three pro games
  • RHP Daniel Alvarez: 5 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 7 K, 1 WP, 6/2 GB/FB
  • RHP Luis Cedeno: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 1/1 GB/FB

Rookie Pulaski (8-3 win over Princeton)

  • SS Jesus Bastidas: 2-5, 2 R, 2 RBI — last year’s international bonus baby is 4-for-12 (.333) through three games
  • 3B Andrew Chaparro: 3-4, 1 R 2 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 E (throwing)
  • DH Eric Wagaman: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K — 5-for-11 (.455) with 9 RBI in three pro games for this year’s 13th rounder
  • 1B Dermis Garcia: 0-3, 1 RBI, 1 K — first pro game at first base … more than a few folks think he’s going to wind up there long-term
  • CF Leobaldo Cabrera: 2-4, 1 R
  • RHP Alex Vizcaino: 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HB, 6/3 GB/FB — 52 of 79 pitches were strikes (66%)

The two Rookie GCL Yanks teams begin play Monday. Still waiting on the rosters. We’ll see them Monday morning, probably.
