Game 101: Make It Five Straight
Masterful Masahiro pitches Yankees back into first place with 6-1 win over Rays

Matt Eddy ranked the ten best power-speed prospects in the minors and two of the ten are Yankees: OF Estevan Florial (No. 6) and SS Jorge Mateo (No. 7). OF Dustin Fowler earned a mention as well, but wasn’t ranked. “Florial needs to close holes in his swing to make more contact, and if he does, his future looks bright,” said the write-up.

Triple-A Scranton (15-8 win over Charlotte)

  • CF Mason Williams: 2-6, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K
  • RF Jake Cave: 1-6, 2 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI — 16 homers are double his previous career high, set last season
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 2-6, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 E (fielding) — five homers in his last 13 games
  • LF Billy McKinney: 4-5, 4 R, 1 2B, 2 3B, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 1 HBP — goodness, what a game … oh, and he threw a runner out at the plate too
  • RHP Brady Lail: 4.1 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 3/2 GB/FB — 64 of 100 pitches were strikes
  • RHP Gio Gallegos: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 3/0 GB/FB — 22 of 32 pitches were strikes (69%)
  • RHP Jonathan Holder: 1 IP, zeroes, 2 K, 1/0 GB/FB — eleven of 14 pitches were strikes (79%)

Double-A Trenton was rained out. They’ll make this game up as part of a doubleheader on August 12th.

High-A Tampa (1-0 win over Palm Beach, walk-off style)

  • SS Kyle Holder: 1-4
  • 2B Nick Solak: 0-4, 3 K
  • CF Trey Amburgey: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K — 8-for-21 (.381) with three doubles in his last five games
  • LF Alex Palma: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 K
  • C Sharif Othman: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K — light-hitting depth catcher comes through with the walk-off double
  • RHP Brian Keller: 9 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 9 K, 8/6 GB/FB — 75 of 108 pitches were strikes (69%) … you don’t see many complete games in the minors … dude was dealing

Low-A Charleston (6-1 win over Greenville) they knocked around Red Sox LHP Jason Groome

  • SS Hoy Jun Park: 0-4, 1 R, 1 K, 1 HBP
  • 2B Diego Castillo: 0-4, 1 K
  • CF Estevan Florial: 1-4, 1 R, 2 RBI, 2 K — 11-for-21 (.523) in his last six games
  • C Donny Sands: 2-4, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 K, 1 CS — he’s been tearing the cover off the ball for weeks now
  • LF Isiah Gilliam: 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 K
  • RHP Nick Nelson: 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 K, 6/2 GB/FB — 56 of 82 pitches were strikes (68%) … 17/4 K/BB in his last three starts and 15.2 innings

Short Season Staten Island (3-2 loss to Tri-City, walk-off style)

  • SS Wilkerman Garcia & LF Leonardo Molina: both 0-4 — Wilkerman struck out twice
  • CF Dom Thompson-Williams: 0-3
  • RF Tommy Robinson: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 SB
  • RHP Jio Orozco: 5.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 1 WP, 2 HB, 5/4 GB/FB, 1 E (pickoff) — 55 of 89 pitches were strikes (62%)
  • RHP Braden Bristo: 2 IP, zeroes, 4 K, 1/0 GB/FB — 19 of 30 pitches were strikes (63%) … 23/3 K/BB in 18.1 innings for last year’s 23rd rounder

Rookie Pulaski‘s doubleheader was rained out. They’re going to make one game up as part of the doubleheader tomorrow. The other game was cancelled and will not be made up.
