Game 108: Jaime's Debut
Losing streak hits four as Yankees fall 7-2 to Indians

Here are the day’s notes:

  • LHP Justus Sheffield (oblique) has started throwing, reports Kyle Franko. He made 50 throws from 60 feet on flat ground. There is no timetable for Sheffield’s return, though the fact he’s throwing is good news. Maybe Sheffield will go to the Arizona Fall League to make up for the lost innings.
  • C Kyle Higashioka (back) has been throwing and the hope is he will get back into games within a week, according to Conor Foley and D.J. Eberle. Between the injuries and spending a month sitting on the big league bench, Higashioka has only 73 plate appearances this season. That’s not good.
  • Two Yankees on this week’s Prospect Hot Sheet: OF Billy McKinney (14th ) and 3B Dermis Garcia (20th). Also, RHP Deivi Garcia was the Helium Watch player. “He’s a smaller righthander with a big arm. His fastball has touched as high as 96 mph in the past, and he’s shown feel to spin a curveball as well,” said the write-up.

Triple-A Scranton (3-1 win over Pawtucket, walk-off style)

  • LF-CF Jake Cave: 1-4, 1 K — now a 19-game hitting streak
  • CF Aaron Hicks: 0-3, 2 K — played seven innings in his third rehab game, as scheduled
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 3-4, 1 R, 1 RBI — hitting streak is up to 17 games … I think the odds are pretty darn good he would outhit Matt Holliday from right now through the end of the season
  • DH Tyler Austin: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI — walk-off two-run homer
  • RF Billy McKinney & 1B Garrett Cooper: both 0-3
  • RHP Luis Cessa: 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 9 K, 2/2 GB/FB — 47 of 69 pitches were strikes (68%), and Conor Foley says he generated 19 (!) swings and misses
  • RHP Jonathan Holder: 2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 1/1 GB/FB — 25 of 33 pitches were strikes (76%)
  • RHP Ben Heller: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 3/0 GB/FB — 19 of 27 pitches were strikes (70%) … really wish all those big league innings that went to Holder earlier this year had gone to Heller instead

Double-A Trenton (4-2 win over Altoona)

  • 2B Nick Solak: 2-4 — 5-for-12 (.417) in three games since the promotion
  • SS Thairo Estrada: 0-4, 1 R
  • 1B Mike Ford: 3-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI
  • DH Ryan McBroom: 3-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K — 14-for-41 (.341) in eleven games since the trade
  • RF Rashad Crawford: 1-3, 1 K
  • RHP Will Carter: 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 8/4 GB/FB — 38 of 70 pitches were strikes (54%)
  • RHP Colten Brewer: 2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 2 WP, 2/0 GB/FB — 24 of 42 pitches were strikes (57%)

High-A Tampa (9-4 win over St. Lucie)

  • 2B Hoy Jun Park: 0-5, 1 E (fielding) — 1-for-12 (.083) in three games since the promotion
  • SS Kyle Holder: 3-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI
  • CF Estevan Florial: 1-4, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 SB — 4-for-12 (.333) in three games since the promotion
  • LF Trey Amburgey: 2-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 SB
  • RF Alex Palma: 2-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K
  • RHP Brian Keller: 5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 1 HB, 2/2 GB/FB — 61 of 90 pitches were strikes (68%)

Low-A Charleston (3-2 loss to Greenville)

  • SS Oswaldo Cabrera: 0-3, 1 BB, 2 E (throwing)
  • RF Isiah Gilliam: 1-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K — 9-for-20 (.450) during his little five-game hitting streak
  • C Donny Sands: 1-4
  • LF Steven Sensley: 1-4, 1 R, 1 K — threw a runner out at second
  • 3B Dermis Garcia: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
  • RHP Rony Garcia: 6.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 4 WP, 9/6 GB/FB — 63 of 95 pitches were strikes (66%) … can’t remember too many games with four wild pitches in all my years doing DotF

Short Season Staten Island (5-4 loss to Aberdeen)

  • SS Wilkerman Garcia: 0-4, 1 RBI, 1 K, 2 E (throwing, fielding)
  • CF Dom Thompson-Williams: 1-3, 1 2B
  • RF Timmy Robinson: 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K
  • RHP Juan De Paula: 5.2 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 5/5 GB/FB — 58 of 93 pitches were strikes (62%)

Rookie Pulaski is still playing after a lengthy rain delay. Here’s the box score. Not sure I’m sticking around long enough for that one to end.

Rookie GCL Yanks East (7-6 win over GCL Yanks West) completion of the July 20th game, which was suspended due to rain in the middle of the fourth inning … going to lump the two teams together

  • SS Jose Devers: 0-2
  • CF Robert Javier: 1-4, 2 R, 1 BB, 2 K
  • RF Canaan Smith: 1-4, 2 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K — he hit a home run on July 24th, though because he hit a home run today and this game goes into the record books as being played on July 20th, this is technically his first career home run
  • LF Jhon Moronta: 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB
  • SS Oswald Peraza: 1-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 E (throwing)
  • C Gustavo Campero: 1-4, 1 BB, 1 K
  • 1B-3B Miguel Flames: 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 CS
  • DH Juan De Leon: 1-3, 1 K, 1 CS, 1 HBP — must be kinda awkward to get plunked by a teammate
  • RF Jordan Scott: 1-4, 1 R, 1 K
  • RHP Roansy Contreras: 4.2 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 3/3 GB/FB
  • RHP Nelvin Correa: 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 4/2 GB/FB
  • RHP Jhonatan Munoz: 3 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 4 BB, 4 K, 2 WP, 3/2 GB/FB

Rookie GCL Yanks West (8-7 win over GCL Yanks East in seven innings) combining the two teams into one update again

  • CF Robert Javier: 1-3, 1 R, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K
  • LF Canaan Smith: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
  • RF Jhon Moronta: 2-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB
  • CF Terrance Robertson: 3-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K — the 2015 12th rounder is 10-for-22 (.455) during his little six-game hitting streak
  • SS Oswald Peraza: 1-2, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 HBP
  • DH Gustavo Campero: 2-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K — dude won’t stop hitting
  • 1B Carlos Tatis: 2-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 E (missed catch) — 20-year-old makes his GCL debut after hitting .310/.390/.506 with seven homers in 42 Dominican Summer League games earlier this year
  • RF Jonathan Amundaray: 1-4, 1 K, 1 CS
  • RHP Luis Ojeda: 2.2 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 2/2 GB/FB
