7:01pm ET: McKinney will miss a few weeks, Aaron Boone said after the game. Miguel Andujar is being called up and Tyler Wade is a candidate to see time in the outfield. I reckon we’re going to start to see more of the Brett Gardner-Aaron Judge-Giancarlo Stanton outfield with Andujar at third base.
5:35pm ET: McKinney has a left AC joint shoulder sprain, the Yankees announced. X-rays did come back negative, so that’s good. It’s unclear how long he will be sidelined. I imagine we’ll get more information after the game.
4:31pm ET: Another day, another injured outfielder. Billy McKinney exited this afternoon’s game against the Blue Jays after crashing into the outfield wall in the first inning. He appeared to hit the wall shoulder first, and his head snapped back as well. McKinney initially stayed in the game, though he had nothing on a throw on the next play, and was removed. Here’s the video.
The Yankees have not yet announced on update on McKinney, who joins Aaron Hicks (intercostal), Jacoby Ellsbury (oblique), and Clint Frazier (concussion) as injured Yankees outfielders. Ellsbury returned to game action at the end of Spring Training and he’s eligible to be activated off the disabled list on Thursday, and it sure seems likely he will return that day.
If necessary, the Yankees could put Tyler Wade in the outfield, though he didn’t play there at all in Spring Training. Ditto Brandon Drury, who also has outfield experience. Moving either Wade or Drury to the outfield (temporarily) would clear an infield job for Gleyber Torres or Miguel Andujar. Hopefully McKinney will be okay though.
