Brice Turang | SS
Background
Turang, 18, is a Southern California kid who attends Santiago High School outside Riverside. He is committed to LSU and there are questions about whether he’s signable outside the top ten or so picks.
Scouting Report
Turang is one of those “does everything well but nothing spectacularly” prospects. He’s a true shortstop with above-average range and a strong arm, and at the plate, he’s a left-handed hitter with good bat-to-ball skills and a sound approach. Turang stands 6-foot-1 and 165 lbs., and while he’ll hit the ball out of the park during batting practice, it’s unclear how much game power he’ll have when it’s all said and done. Chances are he’ll settle in as a contact/on-base/speed top of the order type who provides lots of value in the field. Turang has been on the radar for a long time now and it seems he has reached the point of being over-scouted, meaning everyone has seen the goods and has now moved on to nitpicking his game.
Miscellany
Coming into the spring Turang was considered one of the top prospects in the 2018 draft, and arguably the best high school player available. His stock has dropped a bit because he didn’t dominate summer showcases last year and hasn’t met lofty expectations this spring. Baseball America still ranks him as the ninth best prospect in the draft class. MLB.com and Keith Law (subs. req’d) rank him as the 22nd and 27th best prospect, respectively. Scouting director Damon Oppenheimer has an affinity for Southern California kids and up-the-middle athletes with a good feel for the game, which describes Turang. The Yankees hold the 23rd pick, and if they consider him signable, they could pounce.
