There is still no firm date for LHP Justus Sheffield to come off the disabled list, but he did throw a bullpen session today according to Conor Foley, so that’s good. Sheffield won’t start Saturday as had been originally reportedly. He’s expected to start sometime early next week. Everything seems to be a-okay with the shoulder though.
Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (5-4 win over Lehigh Valley in eleven innings, walk-off style)
- CF-SS Tyler Wade: 3-6, 1 RBI, 1 K — here’s video of his walk-off bunt … first multi-hit game since May 7th and his first three-hit game of the year at any level
- C Kyle Higashioka: 1-5, 1 R
- DH Adam Lind: 1-4, 1 RBI
- 1B Mike Ford: 1-5, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K — back-to-back games with a homer and three homers in his last five games, so he’s starting to find the power stroke after leading the system with 20 homers last year
- LHP Josh Rogers: 7 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 1 HR, 1 HB, 6/9 GB/FB — 71 of 94 pitches were strikes (76%) … 2.98 ERA and 45/11 K/BB in 48.1 innings … rebuilding some prospect stock after missing the second half with elbow trouble last season
- RHP Brady Lail: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K — 17 of 29 pitches were strikes (59%), though the walk was intentional … 1.71 ERA and 24/14 K/BB in 21 innings this season, his first as a full-time reliever … I’m guessing we’ll see him in the Bronx at some point this year, maybe as a Caleb Smith-esque emergency call-up
Double-A Trenton Thunder (11-5 win over Bowie)
- CF Jeff Hendrix: 0-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K
- RF Billy McKinney: 1-5, 1 R, 2 K — 3-for-19 (.158) with six walks and six strikeouts in six rehab games
- 1B Greg Bird: 0-2, 3 R, 3 BB, 1 K — 2-for-17 (.118) with six walks and four strikeouts in six rehab games
- LF Trey Amburgey: 2-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K
- SS Abi Avelino: 4-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 1 E (fielding) — this dude does not want to be in Double-A, he’s been raking since they sent him down
- 3B Gosuke Katoh: 2-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 3 BI, 2 K
- LHP Ryan Bollinger: 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 7/7 GB/FB — 66 of 91 pitches were strikes (73%)
- LHP Stephen Tarpley: 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, 3/0 GB/FB — 13 of 21 pitches were strikes (62%) … 16/13 K/BB in 16 innings
High-A Tampa Tarpons (6-2 win over Dunedin)
- 1B-LF Brandon Wagner: 0-3, 1 HBP
- CF Estevan Florial: 0-2 — he was removed from the game in the fourth inning with wrist soreness … “I noticed in his first at-bat he had some funky-looking swings. And then in his second at-bat, he had another one that resembled those ones from the first. I figured something must be bothering him, so I made the switch to take him out, and later, we got word from the trainer that was working on him that it was soreness in the right wrist,” said manager Pat Osborn to Sam Dykstra … there’s no word on a timetable yet, though hopefully it’s something minor
- 2B Diego Castillo: 1-2, 1 R — came off the bench to replace Florial … 11-for-32 (.344) in his last ten games
- DH Isiah Gilliam: 1-3, 3 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K — four homers in his last 15 games
- RF Alex Palma: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 CS — went 0-for-7 in his first two games and has gone 26-for-77 (.338) in the 20 games since
- SS Hoy Jun Park: 1-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB
- RHP Nick Nelson: 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 8/2 GB/FB — 50 of 78 pitches were strikes (64%) … 48/14 K/BB in 37.2 total innings this year
Low-A Charleston RiverDogs (2-1 loss to Columbia)
- SS Wilkerman Garcia: 1-4, 1 RBI, 2 K — got picked off first
- CF Dom Thompson-Williams: 1-4, 2 K
- 3B Dermis Garcia: 0-4, 4 K — first game of the season and it’s an ugly one … he had been out with an injury (Brendan Kuty says it was an ankle issue) … Dermis hit .249/.357/.542 (144 wRC+) with 17 homers in only 63 games last year … he has 30 homers in 143 career games, which is insane for a dude who turned only 20 in January
- RF Steven Sensley: 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 CS
- 2B Oswaldo Cabrera: 0-2, 1 BB
- LF Leonardo Molina: 1-3, 1 K
- LHP JP Sears: 7 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 1 HB, 10/5 GB/FB — 61 of 93 pitches were strikes (66%) … 26.2 K%, 2.8 BB%, and 51.5 GB% in 29.2 innings so far this year
