The great barbecue road trip continues tonight with the first of three against the Rangers in Arlington. The Yankees took two of three from the Royals in Kansas City over the weekend, and now they get a crack at another last place team. At 18-30, the Rangers have the sixth worst record in baseball, and several of their best position players are on the DL. The Yankees are catching them at a good time.
On the mound this evening is Masahiro Tanaka, who last pitched in that suspended game against the Nationals last week. Tanaka started pitching exclusively from the stretch after struggling the first two innings, and he retired the final eleven batters he faced. I’m curious to see whether he continues pitching from the stretch tonight. That’s not a small change. It could’ve been a temporary measure because he wasn’t comfortable with his mechanics last time out. We’ll see. Here are the lineups:
New York Yankees
1. LF Brett Gardner
2. RF Aaron Judge
3. DH Giancarlo Stanton
4. SS Didi Gregorius
5. C Gary Sanchez
6. CF Aaron Hicks
7. 1B Tyler Austin
8. 3B Neil Walker
9. 2B Gleyber Torres
RHP Masahiro Tanaka
Texas Rangers
1. CF Delino DeShields Jr.
2. DH Shin-Soo Choo
3. 3B Isiah Kiner-Falefa
4. RF Nomar Mazara
5. SS Jurickson Profar
6. LF Joey Gallo
7. 2B Rougned Odor
8. C Robinson Chirinos
9. 1B Ronald Guzman
RHP Bartolo Colon
The good news: There is no rain in the forecast tonight. The Yankees have dealt with a few too many rainouts and close calls lately. It’s a good night for baseball down in Arlington. Tonight’s game is scheduled to begin at 8:05pm ET and you can watch on WPIX locally and MLB Network out of market. Enjoy the game.
Injury Update: Tommy Kahnle (shoulder, biceps) will pitch in a minor league rehab game tonight. Aaron Boone said the Yankees are tentatively planning to get Kahnle back on Friday, for the start of the homestand.
Roster Move: Clint Frazier was sent down following yesterday’s game and Gio Gallegos was called up to replace him today, the Yankees announced. Gallegos is just keeping a spot warm for Tommy Kahnle or Greg Bird, whoever returns first.
