Game 138: Wild Card Game Preview
Athletics 6, Yankees 3: Another game in which the Yankees look like the inferior team in every way

Bad news on the final day of the minor league regular season: RHP Domingo Acevedo has been placed on the Double-A disabled list, the team announced. He has another biceps injury. Acevedo missed time with a blister and biceps trouble earlier this year. Injuries limited him to 69.1 innings this season. Sucks.

Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (5-1 win over Pawtucket) they went 73-65 and clinched the wild card spot yesterday … they’ll play Lehigh Valley (Phillies) in the first round of the postseason … their best-of-five series begins Wednesday

  • DH Mark Payton: 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K — finishes the season at .259/.368/.401 with six homers in 62 games
  • 2B L.J. Mazzilli: 3-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI — Lee’s kid hit .243/.315/.400 with seven homers in 79 games after coming over in a minor trade with the Mets
  • CF Quintin Berry: 1-4, 1 K, 1 E (throwing)
  • RHP Mike King: 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 8/4 GB/FB — 54 of 86 pitches were strikes (63%) … finishes his breakout season with a 1.79 ERA and 152/29 K/BB in 161.1 innings … he led the system in innings (by 29!) and strikeouts (by eight) … he also finished 19th in the minors in strikeouts and second in ERA (among pitchers with 100+ innings)
  • RHP Chance Adams: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, 1/1 GB/FB — six strikes, 12 pitches … he threw two innings (26 pitches) on Saturday, so they brought him back quick … finishes the regular season with a 4.78 ERA and 113/58 K/BB in 113 Triple-A innings

Double-A Trenton Thunder (2-1 win over Reading, walk-off style) they went 79-61 and won the division … they’ll play New Hampshire (Blue Jays) in the first round of the postseason … their best-of-five series begins Wednesday

  • CF Rashad Crawford: 0-2, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB — finishes at .234/.307/.323 with two homers in 81 games … brutal year for the 24-year-old, who came over from the Cubs as the fourth piece in the Aroldis Chapman trade … at one point the Yankees sent him all the way down to Extended Spring Training to work on things
  • 1B Brandon Wagner: 1-4 — finishes his breakout season with 21 homers and a .267/.380/.461 batting line, though he was quite a bit better with Tampa (.270/.376/.510) than Trenton (.262/.390/.346)
  • SS Kyle Holder: 1-4, 1 R, 2 K — finishes the season at .257/.318/.352 with a 10.2 K% and 7.3 BB% in only 48 games around injuries
  • LF Jeff Hendrix: 1-4, 2 K — walk-off single
  • RHP Albert Abreu: 5 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 6/4 GB/FB — 44 of 62 pitches were strikes (71%) … one day after RHP Deivi Garcia’s stellar Double-A debut, Abreu has a great Double-A debut of his own … finishes the season with a 5.20 ERA and 74/32 K/BB in 72.2 innings around elbow trouble … I imagine he’ll remain with Trenton for the postseason

The High-A Tampa Tarpons‘ season is over. They went 70-67 and did not qualify for the postseason.

Low-A Charleston RiverDogs (7-4 win over West Virginia) they went 64-72 and did not qualify for the postseason

  • SS Oswaldo Cabrera: 1-4, 1 R, 1 BB — finishes the year at .229/.273/.320 with six homers in 126 games, which is quite bad
  • 1B Dermis Garcia: 3-4, 2 R, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 1 K — went 26-for-85 (.306) in his final 22 games … finishes the regular season at .241/.320/.444 with 15 homers, 30.6 K%, and 9.9 BB% in 88 games … he has 45 homers in 231 career games, which is pretty crazy for a dude who doesn’t turn 21 until January
  • CF Leonardo Molina: 0-4, 1 K — finishes at .251/.292/.349 with two homers in 119 games
  • 2B Wilkerman Garcia: 0-3, 1 K — ends the season at .218/.274/.305 in 121 games … his big GCL debut in 2015 feels like a lifetime ago
  • RHP Miguel Yajure: 5 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 7/4 GB/FB — 41 of 60 pitches were strikes (68%) … 20-year-old finishes the season with a 3.90 ERA and 56/15 K/BB in 64.1 innings … he missed all of last season and the start of this season with an injury

Short Season Staten Island Yankees (5-4 loss to Brooklyn in ten innings, walk-off style) they went 37-36 and did not qualify for the postseason

  • SS Eduardo Torrealba: 0-4, 2 R
  • C Josh Breaux: 0-4, 3 K — he exited the game after a collision at the plate in the eighth inning … hopefully it was only precautionary on the final day of the season … this year’s second rounder finished his pro debut with a .269/.289/.352 batting line with zero homers, 18.4 K%, and 3.5 BB% in 30 games around a hamstring problem … he was billed as a power/swing-and-miss guy out of the draft, so naturally he hit zero homers with a good strikeout rate in his pro debut
  • 2B Jesus Bastidas: 2-4, 1 RBI
  • RHP Drew Finley: 2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 WP, 1 HB, 2/2 GB/FB — 30 of 46 pitches were strikes (65%) … finishes his first season as a full-time reliever with a 7.24 ERA and 33/20 K/BB in 27.1 innings

The Rookie Pulaski Yankees‘ season is over. They went 32-36 and did not qualify for the postseason.

The Rookie GCL Yankees East‘s season is over. They went 19-35 and didn’t qualify for the postseason.

The Rookie GCL Yankees West‘s season is over. They went 25-27 and didn’t qualify for the postseason.
