RHP Mike King has been named the Triple-A International League Pitcher of the Month for August, the league announced. He had a 1.09 ERA (3.24 FIP) with 22.9% strikeouts and 3.4% walks in five starts and 33 innings last month. King is the first Scranton pitcher to win the IL Pitcher of the Month award since Brandon Duckworth back in 2001, when they were the Red Barons and affiliated with the Phillies. (Duckworth is a scout with the Yankees now.)
Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (3-2 win over Pawtucket) the win clinched the wild card spot, so they’re going to the postseason … their regular season ends tomorrow and they’ll play Lehigh Valley (Phillies) in the first round
- SS Gio Urshela: 1-4 — 15-for-46 (.326) with two doubles, one triple, one homer, two walks, and only four strikeouts in his last ten games
- 1B Ryan McBroom: 0-4, 2 K
- DH Mike Ford: 1-4, 1 K
- C Wilkin Castillo: 1-3, 1 3B, 2 RBI — had the go-ahead two-run triple in the fifth inning
- RHP Adonis Rosa: 3.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 2/3 GB/FB — 43 of 68 pitches were strikes (63%)
- LHP Justus Sheffield: 2.1 IP, zeroes, 4 K, 3/0 GB/FB — 17 of 25 pitches were strikes (68%), and it is notable that he entered the game in the middle of an inning for the first time … it’s not quite Jonathan Holder striking out eleven in a row to clinch a postseason spot in 2016, but Sheffield went seven up, seven down in his best relief appearance so far … finishes the regular season with a 2.48 ERA and 123/50 K/BB in 116 innings, which is pretty excellent for a 21-year-old who spent most of the season in Triple-A … now that Scranton is in the postseason, I suspect Sheffield will stay down here a little longer rather than get called up to the big leagues … we’ll see
Double-A Trenton Thunder (3-0 win over Reading) their regular season ends tomorrow and they have already clinched a postseason spot … this win clinches their second straight division title … they’ll face New Hampshire (Blue Jays) in the first round of the postseason
- 2B-1B Gosuke Katoh: 1-4, 1 BB, 2K
- LF Trey Amburgey: 1-5, 1 2B —14-for-42 (.333) with four doubles and a homer in his last ten games
- DH Brandon Wagner: 1-2, 1 R, 2 BB, 1 SB — 12-for-24 (.500) in his last seven games
- SS Kyle Holder: 2-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 K — three homers in 47 games around all the injuries this season … he hit four homers in 104 games last year
- RHP Deivi Garcia: 5 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 K, 3/2 GB/FB — 50 of 84 pitches were strikes (60%) in a brilliant Double-A debut … he started in place of Jonathan Loaisiga, who was called up to the big leagues earlier today, and I wonder if Garcia will stick with Trenton through the postseason … the 19-year-old finishes with 2.55 ERA and 105/20 K/BB in 74 innings … just an excellent season from start to finish
High-A Tampa Tarpons (3-1 loss to Bradenton in seven innings) completed early due to rain … OF Clint Frazier was in the original lineup before being scratched late, and I’m pretty sure the Yankees held him out because of the wet field and forthcoming rain … I’m guessing Frazier will join Scranton (or maybe Trenton) for the postseason next … this was Tampa’s regular season finale, by the way … they went 70-67 and did not qualify for the postseason
- CF Estevan Florial: 1-4, 1 K, 1 E (throwing) — finishes the regular season at .283/.374/.428 with six homers, 24.6% strikeouts, and 12.6% walks in 84 games around the wrist surgery … I wonder if he’ll join Trenton for the postseason next? … either way, he’s going to the Arizona Fall League next month
- LF Dom Thompson-Williams: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB — the 2016 fifth rounder broke out with a .299/.363/.546 batting line, a farm system leading 22 home runs, 24.5% strikeouts, and 8.0% walks this season
- RF Isiah Gilliam: 0-1, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1 E (fielding) — followed up last year’s .275/.356/.468 line (15 homers) with a .259/.313/.397 line (13 homers) … also went from 21.7 K% and 10.8 BB% to 29.0 K% and 6.9 BB%
- 1B Steven Sensley: 1-3 — last year’s 12th rounder followed up his big pro debut (.292/.370/.584) with a .249/.330/.449 line and 17 homers while shifting from the outfield to first base
- RHP Christian Morris: 3.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 3/2 GB/FB — 33 of 53 pitches were strikes (62%)
Low-A Charleston RiverDogs (3-2 win over West Virginia) their regular season ends tomorrow and they did not qualify for the postseason
- DH Oswaldo Cabrera: 0-3, 1 BB, 2 K
- 1B Dermis Garcia: 1-4, 1 R, 1 K — only one hit today, but he’s finishing the year strong … he’ll be Rule 5 Draft eligible after the season and I would be surprised if he gets a 40-man roster spot … tough to see him sticking in the big leagues next year, though I suppose a rebuilding team could always Luis Torrens him
- CF Leonardo Molina: 1-3, 1 RBI
- SS Wilkerman Garcia: 1-3, 1 CS
- RHP Shawn Semple: 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7 K, 1 WP, 2/3 GB/FB — 55 of 84 pitches were strikes (65%) … last year’s 11th rounder finishes with a 2.95 ERA and 62/14 K/BB in 61 innings
- RHP Alex Vargas: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 3/1 GB/FB — 20 of 28 pitches were strikes (71%) … I had him as my No. 30 prospect coming into the season, but he spent the year primarily in the bullpen, and finished with a 4.01 ERA and 50/16 K/BB in 83 innings … I missed the mark badly with this one, it seems
Short Season Staten Island Yankees (5-4 win over Brooklyn) their regular season ends tomorrow and I believe they’ve already been eliminated from postseason contention … they are 37-35 while Auburn, the wildcard leader, is already 40-35 … even with a win tomorrow and an Auburn loss, Auburn would still have a higher winning percentage (.521 to .526)
- SS Eduardo Torrealba: 0-4, 1 K
- 3B Kyle Gray: 0-4
- DH Josh Breaux: 3-4, 1 R, 1 2B — had been in a little 1-for-16 (.063) slump
- LF Canaan Smith: 1-4, 2 K
- RHP Frank German: 3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 5/0 GB/FB — 30 of 55 pitches were strikes (55%) … this year’s fourth rounder finishes his pro debut with a 2.08 ERA and 41/6 K/BB in 30.1 innings
