Oregon State is leading UNC 5-2 in the 5th inning of Game 2 of the CWS Finals (OSU leads the best-of-3 series 1-0) as of this writing. OSU fell behind for the first time in Omaha in the bottom of the 1st, but that lasted all of half-an-inning. UNC head coach Mike Fox had to bring in closer Andrew Carignan with 2 outs in the 2nd to keep the game close after starter Luke Putkonen stunk up the joint (1.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 WP). Shoulda started Woodard.
UNC had the bases loaded with no outs against OSU starter Mike Stutes in the 3rd, but managed to only push 1 run across. Carignan is still in the game;Â I’ll update this post after the game.
Update: OSU wraps up their second straight CWS Title with a 9-3 win. They’re the first team to repeat since LSU 10 years ago, and also the first team ever to win the Championship after a losing record in conference play (they went 10-14 in the Pac-10). Freshman pitcher Jorge Reyes took home Most Outstanding Player honors, the first freshman to win the award since Huston Street in 2002. Getting to Omaha 2 years in a row is tough enough, let alone getting to the Title Series in consecutive years, as both OSU and UNC did.Â
