Pineda strikes out eight in SWB blowout win

July 18, 2013 by Mike 64 Comments

Update: A-Rod homers in rehab game, will be activated Monday
Mailbag: Beltran, Kuroda, Joba, D'Backs

Some notes:

  • OF Tyler Austin has a bone bruise in his right wrist, reports Josh Norris. He’ll keep it immobilized in a brace and then be re-evaluated in a week. Austin told Mike Ashmore he was hesitant to swing because it hurt whenever he did.
  • UTIL Ronnie Mustelier was activated off the Triple-A Scranton DL according to Chad Jennings. He was out with two groin strains. Given the team’s struggles against southpaws, I have to think he’ll be considered for a call-up at some point.
  • Baseball Prospectus (subs. req’d) but together a quote book from scouts on various prospects. Here’s a piece of the OF Slade Heathcott nugget: “Terrible approach when I saw him but was still arguably the most physically talented prospect I’ve seen this year … farm directors dream about players having tools like that, and at his age I would not give up on him.”

Triple-A Scranton (8-0 win over Louisville)

  • 2B David Adams: 2-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI — nine hits in 24 at-bats (.375) since being sent down
  • 3B Alex Rodriguez: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K — had a little more on him earlier
  • SS-3B Brent Lillibridge: 3-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 E (throwing) — he’s been crushing the ball since being acquired last month
  • C J.R. Murphy: 1-5, 1 R, 1 2B
  • CF Melky Mesa: 3-5
  • RF Adonis Garcia: 2-3, 1 BB
  • LF Ronnie Mustelier: 0-4, 1 R — very close to an all-Cuban outfield
  • RHP Michael Pineda: 4.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 K, 3/3 GB/FB — 56 of 82 pitches were strikes (68%), and this is the first time he’s gone over 80 pitches since getting into official minor league games … he was sitting in that same 92-93 range with a few 94-95s … according to Collins, he seems to be running into a bit of a wall around the fourth and fifth inning, which isn’t a surprise given the injury and long layoff
  • RHP Dellin Betances: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 2/1 GB/FB — 14 of 27 pitches were strikes (52%) … 48/16 K/BB in 38 innings since moving to the bullpen

Double-A Trenton (9-2 win over New Hampshire)

  • LF Ramon Flores: 1-3, 2 R, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1 SB — 53 walks in 93 games this year after 54 walks in 132 games last year
  • CF Slade Heathcott: 3-5, 2 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 SB — 15 hits in his last 44 at-bats (.341)
  • RF Yeral Sanchez: 2-3, 2 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 HBP — they should promote him just to make the all-Cuban outfield a reality
  • RHP Zach Nuding: 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 3 K, 2/5 GB/FB — 49 of 82 pitches were strikes (58%) …
  • RHP Danny Burawa: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 3/0 GB/FB — only 19 of 40 pitches were strikes (48%)
  • RHP Tommy Kahnle: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 0/1 GB/FB — 15 of 29 pitches were strikes (52%)

High-A Tampa (6-1 loss to Jupiter)

  • CF Mason Williams: 1-3, 1 BB — threw a runner out at the plate … 17 hits in his last 40 at-bats (.425)
  • 3B Peter O’Brien: 0-4, 1 K
  • DH Gary Sanchez: 1-4
  • LF Ben Gamel: 0-3, 1 BB, 2 K
  • 2B Rob Refsnyder: 1-4, 1 RBI, 2 K
  • RHP Corey Black: 2 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 2 K, 1 WP, 2/2 GB/FB — he’s been real good this year, was due for a clunker
  • RHP Branden Pinder: 2 IP, zeroes, 4 K, 0/2 GB/FB — 19/3 K/BB in 17.2 innings since being demoted
  • RHP Charley Short: 1 IP, zeroes, 1 K, 0/2 GB/FB — 62/9 K/BB in 42.1 innings

Low-A Charleston (8-5 win over Grennsboro)

  • SS Cito Culver: 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K — 11 hits in his last 40 at-bats (.275) with seven doubles and a triple
  • 2B Angelo Gumbs: 2-5, 1 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 K, 1 SB — got picked off first
  • 1B Greg Bird: 1-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
  • 3B Dante Bichette: 1-5, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 3 K — eight homers this year after only three last year, so that’s good
  • RHP Cesar Vargas: 3 IP, zeroes, 1 K, 4/2 GB/FB
  • LHP Tyler Webb: 2 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 3/1 GB/FB — this year’s tenth rounder had allowed two runs in his first 11 pro innings total

Short Season Staten Island (8-2 loss to Batavia)

  • CF Michael O’Neill: 0-5, 1 K
  • DH Eric Jagielo: 1-2, 1 2B, 2 BB — eight hits in his last 20 at-bats (.400) … 7/8 K/BB in 16 pro games
  • RF Yeicok Calderon: 0-4, 3 K
  • SS Jose Rosario: 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B
  • RHP Gio Gallegos: 4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 4/4 GB/FB — he had walked three batters in 55 career innings coming into this game

Rookie GCL Yanks1 (3-2 loss to GCL Braves in 12 innings, walk-off style)

  • SS Abi Avelino: 0-5, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 CS — got picked off first
  • DH Gosuke Katoh: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 K — 12 hits in his last 32 at-bats (.375) with four doubles, three triples, nine walks, and six strikeouts
  • RF Austin Aune: 1-5, 1 R, 1 K

Rookie GCL Yanks2 (7-0 win over GCL Pirates)

  • SS Bryan Cuevas: 3-5, 3 R, 1 2B, 2 3B, 2 K
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 2-3, 2 2B, 2 RBI — played five innings in the field in his second game back from injury
  • C Luis Torrens: 0-2, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 HBP — got hit in the second and was taken out in the seventh, so he might have just been coming out early in the blowout
  • DH Nathan Mikolas: 1-3, 1 R, 1 K, 1 HBP — left the game in the eighth, an inning after the HBP
  • 1B Renzo Martini: 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
  • RHP Jordan Cote: 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 3/3 GB/FB — 10/3 K/BB in 14 innings
