After taking three of four at Fenway the Yankees had some downtime this week during the All-Star break. Still, there are plenty of goings on.

The Yankees did sign first rounder Ty Hensley. Mike and I talk about all the different implications of his shoulder injury and signing below slot. Given the changes to the draft system this year it’s interesting to compare this situation to what might have happened a year ago.

We have plenty of questions, too, including a bit of speculation (thanks, Peter Gammons!) involving Cliff Lee.

It’s been a little bit of up and down since we last broadcast, but the Yankees managed to play even baseball (2-1 vs. the White Sox and 1-2 vs. the Rays since last Friday). We run down that and a bit more.

Of course, much of the conversation is about the upcoming Red Sox series. No matter how much we say the rivalry has dulled, a Yanks Sox series still strikes up more conversation than other series.

Since the Yankees are at exactly the halfway point, we also talk about surprises and disappointments from the first half. Honestly, I think the balance (more disappointments than surprises) bodes well for the second half.

Heartbreaking loss last night, but overall it was a good week for the Yankees. Since we last broadcast they went 5-2, with one of the losses coming in the ninth. In the other they had the go-ahead run on base in the ninth.

Clearly we’re talking about the rotation issues and what they mean for the immediate future. It’s Garcia and Warren for now, but expect to see a few changes between now and the end of July. Tis the season.

We’re onto some reader questions, and then an outlook for the next week, which nearly takes us to the All-Star break.

The Yanks went on quite a run, winning 10 straight before dropping the last two to the Braves. Still, they’ve played markedly better in the past month. Here’s what was happening in the last week.

  • Braves and Nats series. Even though they lost two of three to the Braves, things are still looking good.
  • The pitching in general has been phenomenal this month. Mike and I talk about what has gone into this incredible run.
  • RISP. We can’t avoid it. At one point it was frustrating. Now it’s just absurd.
  • Reader questions. I like these. Keep sending ‘em in.
  • The Mets series ahead. Why R.A. Dickey is confounding everyone.

We missed last Friday, and we’ll be missing this Friday, so why not do a Monday podcast?

  • We start by reviewing the Rays and Mets series. Obviously this is an upbeat portion, since the Yanks went 5-1 in the last week.

  • Then we turn to a sadder subject, which is Brett Gardner‘s status. He could be out for a while.
  • Last week was the draft, so Mike and I run down some things we learned from the first year with the new rules.
  • There are no rules for signing Jorge Soler, but Mike and I talk about the implications of doing so.
  • To close there’s some stuff about Ivan Nova and the upcoming series against the Braves.

It’s been a decent week in Yankee land — even with losing two out of three in Anaheim. Considering the way series usually go down there, it could have been much worse.

  • We open with a review of the last two series, which have left the Yankees 4-2 on the road trip.
  • Then it’s onto reader mail. I want to make this a more regular feature on the show.
  • A bit on Derek Jeter, seeing as its the 20th anniversary of the Yankees drafting him.
  • Cody Johnson: actual prospect?
  • Runners in scoring position: the natural cure.

There are, of course, various other ideas bandied about here and there throughout.

Apologies in advance for the technical issues. If it sounds like we’re talking over each other, it’s because someone’s internet connection was horrible. In any case, we’re talking slumping offense, Teixeira, and pitching on the podcast today.

It’s been something of an eventful week in Yankeeland. We got to see the new endgame tandem of David Robertson and Rafael Soriano. We also saw some breakout signs from Robinson Cano, which should jumpstart the offense. All in all it was a pretty decent week — save for the Gardner injury news, of course. Mike and I are covering it all.

There is plenty to talk about this week, but of course we’re starting off with the loss of Mariano Rivera. Mike and I try to stay as positive as possible.

Then we have the issues of the team, which take up a bit more room. There’s sorting out the bullpen and rotation, and then the lineup. Oh the lineup. The guys are going to come around and hit, but now more than ever the Yankees need timing on their side.

It’s pretty obvious what we’re going to talk about, right?
