DotF: Duran, Pereira, Duran make 2018 debuts in Pulaski’s win

Game 70: Back in the Bronx
Yankees 7, Mariners 2: Dominant Domingo and the Dingers

Couple quick notes to get us started:

  • Good report from Kiley McDaniel on RHP Roansy Contreras’ season debut the other day. He says the 18-year-old was 94-97 mph with his heater, with a slider that flashed 60 and a changeup that flashed 50 on the 20-80 scouting scale. That’s an above-average fastball, a potentially above-average slider, and a potentially average changeup.
  • SS Thairo Estrada may be done for the season. Triple-A Scranton manager Bobby Mitchell told DJ Eberle that Estrada has a back issue and it’ll be difficult for him to return before the end of the year. Thairo was originally placed on the Triple-A disabled list with a wrist issue.
  • As for RHP Erik Swanson, he is on the Triple-A disabled list with a groin issue, reports Conor Foley. That stinks, but it is good news in that it’s not his arm. He’s had elbow trouble in the past. Sounds like Swanson could miss a few weeks.

Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (7-5 loss to Lehigh Valley)

  • CF Tyler Wade: 1-1, 2 R, 4 BB
  • LF Mark Payton: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 3B, 3 RBI — got picked off first … I expected some team to give him a look as a Rule 5 Draft fourth or fifth outfielder these last few years, but it hasn’t happened
  • 3B Brandon Drury: 0-5, 2 K
  • 1B Tyler Austin: 2-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 E (fielding) — here’s video of the homer
  • RF Billy McKinney: 0-3, 1 BB, 2 K
  • C Kyle Higashioka: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 E (throwing)
  • RHP Chance Adams: 4 IP, 3 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 1 K, 7/3 GB/FB — 55 of 89 pitches were strikes (62%) … 5.21 ERA and 71/31 K/BB in 65.2 innings
  • RHP Tommy Kahnle: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 0/2 GB/FB — 18 of 25 pitches were strikes (72%) … 9/3 K/BB in six innings down here

Double-A Trenton Thunder (7-3 win over Binghamton)

  • DH Trey Amburgey: 0-4, 1 BB
  • SS Abi Avelino: 3-4, 2 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 CS — eight homers in 65 games now … his previous career high was six homers in 126 games in 2016
  • 2B Gosuke Katoh: 2-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 K
  • RF Jhalan Jackson: 0-4, 4 K — sitting on a 39.7% strikeout rate
  • RHP Trevor Stephan: 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 1 HR, 4/1 GB/FB — 53 of 84 pitches were strikes (63%) … 2.32 ERA and 79/17 K/BB in 66 innings for last year’s third rounder

High-A Tampa Tarpons (8-7 loss to Fort Myers)

  • SS Diego Castillo: 4-5, 1 R, 2 CS — 11-for-34 (.324) in his last eight games
  • 2B Hoy Jun Park: 1-3, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 HBP
  • RF Isiah Gilliam: 3-5, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 K
  • 1B Brandon Wagner: 3-5, 1 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 K — up to 14 homers in 60 games now … he hit 15 homers in 154 games from 2016-17
  • RHP Will Carter: 2.2 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 4 BB, 2 K, 1/2 GB/FB
  • LHP Trevor Lane: 2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 1 WP, 0/3 GB/FB — he’s allowed a run in seven of his last nine appearances

The Low-A Charleston RiverDogs are off until Thursday for the All-Star break. The All-Star Game itself was played tonight (SOU 9, NOR 5).

  • PH-RF Steven Sensley: 0-3, 2 K — entered the game in the fourth inning
  • 3B Chris Hess: 0-5 — played the entire game and batted eighth

Short Season Staten Island Yankees (2-1 loss to Lowell)

  • DH Frederick Cuevas: 0-3, 1 BB, 3 K
  • SS Eduardo Torrealba: 2-4, 1 K, 1 CS
  • LF Canaan Smith: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K — 3-for-18 (.167) with seven strikeouts in five games so far
  • CF Junior Soto: 1-4, 1 K
  • C Ryan Lidge: 3-3 — organizational depth catcher has played at Charleston, Tampa, Trenton, and now Staten Island this season
  • RHP Juan De Paula: 4.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 4/3 GB/FB — 55 of 81 pitches were strikes (68%) … 20-year-old came over in the Ben Gamel trade and is one of my Not Top 30 Prospects

Rookie Pulaski Yankees (4-1 win over Danville) here is their roster … this is their Opening Day, so here is the full lineup

  • LF Robert Javier: 4-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 SB — that’s one way to start the season
  • 2B Ezequiel Duran: 0-4, 1 RBI, 2 K — he’s a big deal
  • CF Everson Pereira: 1-5, 1 R, 1 2B — make sure you don’t miss the glowing report Baseball America posted on Pereira yesterday
  • 1B Carlos Tatis: 1-4, 1 K, 1 E (fielding)
  • 3B Nelson Gomez: 0-2, 2 BB, 2 K — so I guess he didn’t quit baseball after all
  • C Saul Torres: 0-4, 1 K — he’s one of my Not Top 30 Prospects
  • RF Juan De Leon: 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 K — 2014-15 bonus babies are on the same team as 2017-18 bonus babies … probably not what the Yankees had in mind when they spent all that money four years ago
  • DH Jordan Scott: 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K
  • SS Daniel Barrios: 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K
  • RHP Luis Medina: 4 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 5 BB, 4 K, 1 WP, 4/4 GB/FB — 43 of 78 pitches were strikes (55%) … that’s Medina in a nutshell right there … unhittable stuff but throwing strikes is an issue
  • RHP Luis Rijo: 5 IP, 7 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 7/2 GB/FB — 55 of 73 pitches were strikes (75%)

Rookie GCL Yankees East‘s game was suspended with one out in the bottom of the third. Here’s the box score. The game will be completed on July 2nd.

Rookie GCL Yankees West (24-8 loss to GCL Tigers East) 24-8? ouch

  • RF-CF Antonio Cabello: 3-4, 2 R, 1 3B, 1 SB — threw a runner out at second … 17-year-old signed as a catcher last year, but he was so rough around the edges defensively and so athletic that the Yankees stuck him in the outfield
  • SS Roberto Chirinos: 1-2, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 E (fielding, throwing)
  • DH Anthony Garcia: 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 K
  • C Donny Sands: 1-2, 1 R, 1 BB — played five innings behind the plate in his second game back from a broken arm
  • CF Brandon Lockridge: 1-2, 1 R, 1 3B — this year’s fifth rounder played five innings in his second pro game
  • RF Antonio Arias: 2-2, 1 R
  • RHP Nelvin Correa: 3.2 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 3/2 GB/FB
  • LHP Daniel Calderon: 1.2 IP, 2 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 6 BB, 3 K, 1 HR, 2 WP, 1/0 GB/FB — not a good control day, huh?
  • LHP Argelis Herrera: 0 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 0 K, 1 WP, 1 HB — some ugly pitching lines this game
  • RHP Marcus Evey: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 0/1 GB/FB — pro debut for this year’s 20th round pick
