Game 131: Tanaka Tuesday
Yanks survive rain delay, their bullpen in 5-4 win over KC

Got a bunch of notes to pass along:

  • Congrats to OF Ben Gamel, who was named the Triple-A International League MVP. Al Pedrique was named the league’s Manager of the Year as well. Gamel, who was the IL Rookie of the Year last year, has hit .309/.366/.422 (126 wRC+) with six homers and 19 steals in 115 games for the Scranton this season. The RailRiders have the best record in all of Triple-A at 82-50.
  • Gamel, C Gary Sanchez, IF Donovan Solano, and OF Aaron Judge were all named to the IL end of season All-Star Team. Blue Jays DH Jesus Montero made it too. Meanwhile, 1B Chris Gittens was named to the Low-A South Atlantic League end of season All-Star Team. Congrats to those guys.
  • RHP Luis Severino was scratched from tonight’s scheduled Triple-A start. Jack Curry says the Yankees did that to make sure he’s fresh when he comes back up later this week. Rosters expand Thursday. Shane Hennigan says LHP Nestor Cortes was bumped up to make the spot start.
  • 2B Nick Solak appeared in today’s Prospect Report and this week’s Prospect Ten Pack (subs. req’d). “(His) approach stands out as one of the more advanced I have seen in the NYPL this season. Quick hands, a line-drive stroke, and an efficient swing path result in a hit tool with plus potential,” said the Baseball Prospectus write-up.

Triple-A Scranton (4-0 win over Buffalo) that’s their 24th (!) shutout of the season, which is insane … the 1992 Braves were the last MLB team with 24 shutouts in a season

  • CF Ben Gamel: 1-4, 2 R, 1 K
  • RF Mason Williams: 2-3, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI — 28-for-85 (.329) in his last 22 games, so I guess the shoulder’s feeling good … I still think the Yankees are going to leave him down here through the Triple-A postseason so he can continue to play everyday and make up for all those lost at-bats … they did that with Slade Heathcott following his quad injury last year
  • DH Rob Refsnyder: 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI
  • 1B Chris Parmelee: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI
  • LF Jake Cave: 0-4, 2 K
  • C Kyle Higashioka: 0-4, 1 K
  • LHP Nestor Cortes: 5.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 1 HB, 5/2 GB/FB — 63 of 99 pitches were strikes (64%), plus he picked a runner off first … heck of a Triple-A debut … he’s pitched for all four full season affiliates this year, and they’re all going to the postseason, so I guess he has a chance to win four championship rings
  • RHP Luis Severino: 2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 1/1 GB/FB — 21 of 34 pitches were strikes (62%) … safe to say he’s being prepped for relief work in September
  • LHP Dietrich Enns: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 1/0 GB/FB — nine of 12 pitches were strikes … he’s in the bullpen right now to keep his innings in check … I wonder if they’ll put him back in the rotation for the postseason

Double-A Trenton (6-4 win over New Hampshire)

  • 2B Tyler Wade: 1-4, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K
  • CF Dustin Fowler: 1-5, 1 RBI, 3 K, 1 SB
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 2-5, 1 R, 1 K — 9-for-27 (.333) during his little five-game hitting streak
  • RF Billy McKinney: 0-4, 1 R, 1 K
  • SS Abi Avelino: 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI
  • RHP Ronald Herrera: 6.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 6/6 GB/FB — 64 of 108 pitches were strikes (59%) … 3.75 ERA and a 131/38 K/BB in 137 total innings for the guy the Yankees got in the Jose Pirela trade
  • RHP Gio Gallegos: 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 2/0 GB/FB — 26 of 38 pitches were strikes (68%) … 99/17 K/BB in 73.2 innings

High-A Tampa‘s game was suspended due to rain in the second inning. Here’s the box score. They’ll complete the game tomorrow.

Low-A Charleston (2-0 loss to Hagerstown)

  • SS Kyle Holder: 1-3, 1 BB
  • 2B Hoy Jun Park: 0-4, 1 K, 1 E (missed catcher)
  • LF Alex Palma: 0-2 — left the game after grounding out in the fourth for an unknown reason
  • RF Jhalan Jackson: 0-3, 1 BB, 3 K
  • 3B Mandy Alvarez: 0-3, 1 BB
  • C Luis Torrens: 1-3
  • RHP Daris Vargas: 5 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 8/0 GB/FB — 55 of 90 pitches were strikes (61%)
  • RHP Taylor Widener: 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 5/2 GB/FB — 39 of 57 pitches were strikes (68%), plus he picked a runner off second … 52/6 K/BB in 34.1 innings for this year’s 12th rounder

Short Season Staten Island (6-4 loss to Connecticut)

  • CF Dom Thompson-Williams: 1-5, 1 K
  • 2B Nick Solak: 1-5, 2 K
  • RF Tommy Robinson: 1-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K — threw a runner out at second
  • 3B Drew Bridges: 1-3, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
  • SS Angel Aguilar: 1-4, 2 K
  • RHP Simon De La Rosa: 5 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 2 WP, 1 HB, 3/3 GB/FB — 47 of 81 pitches were strikes (58%)

Rookie Pulaski (7-2 win over Johnson City)

  • 1B Brandon Wagner: 0-4, 1 BB, 3 K
  • DH Dermis Garcia: 0-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K — he’s played 56 games this year: 39.5 K% and 13.2 BB% in the first 28, and 30.4 K% and 15.2 BB% in the last 28 even counting this game
  • CF Leonardo Molina: 2-4, 2 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 1 K — five homers in his last 14 games … he hit seven homers in the first 170 games of his career
  • RHP Nick Nelson: 2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 2 K, 1 HB, 2/1 GB/FB — unless he gets promoted elsewhere (possible), this year’s fourth rounder finishes his pro debut with a 3.38 ERA and a 19/22 K/BB in 21.1 innings

Rookie GCL Yanks East (0-0 tie with GCL Braves in six innings) another tie! … we went like nine years with no ties in DotF and now we’ve had two in a month … the two teams don’t play again this year, so they couldn’t suspend the game when it started raining, hence the early finish and a tie

  • LF Brayan Pena: 0-1, 2 BB, 1 K — 13/9 K/BB in his last 12 games
  • CF Edel Luaces: 0-2, 1 K
  • RHP Nolan Martinez: 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 3/2 GB/FB — unless he’s promoted elsewhere (seems unlikely), this year’s third rounder finishes his pro debut with a 4/3 K/BB in seven scoreless innings
  • LHP Evan Rutckyj: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 2/2 GB/FB — fifth rehab appearance following April elbow surgery … he’s probably heading to Double-A or Triple-A next to help out after September call-ups thin out rosters

Rookie GCL Yanks West (5-1 loss to GCL Phillies)

  • SS Diego Castillo: 1-2, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 CS, 1 E (throwing) — 6-for-12 with three doubles, two walks, and one strikeout in his last three games
  • LF Pablo Oliveras: 1-4
  • 3B Nelson Gomez: 0-4, 2 K
  • 1B Miguel Flames: 0-4
  • RHP Gilmael Troya: 5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 9/1 GB/FB — unless he’s promoted elsewhere (not out of the question), the 19-year-old finishes with a 3.78 ERA and 39/11 K/BB in 50 innings
