Via Chad Jennings, both Rafael Soriano and Eric Chavez will begin their rehab assignments with High-A Tampa tomorrow. “You just kind of keep your fingers cross that everything goes well for both of them tomorrow,” said Joe Girardi before tonight’s game, who confirmed that Soriano will need at least three rehab appearances before rejoining the team. They also want him to pitch on back-to-back days at least once before activated. Chavez is likely to DH at first, but playing the field can’t be far behind if they’re willing to start his rehab clock.
Chavez resumes baseball activities
Via Chad Jennings, Eric Chavez has resumed baseball activities after suffering some setbacks in his rehab from a foot injury. “He’s taking ground balls, and he’s taking BP, so he’s done okay,” said Joe Girardi prior to this afternoon’s game. “Hopefully we can get him in a game pretty soon too. I can’t tell you when, but it would be nice to get him in a game soon.” I’m not going to hold my breath, but it would be really, really awesome to have Chavez back while Alex Rodriguez on the shelf.
Update (2:39pm): Via Marc Carig, Chavez is slated to DH in a minor league game as soon as Tuesday. Wow, that’s unexpectedly awesome.
Injury News: Swisher, Soriano, Chavez, Marte
Some injury notes on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon, courtesy of Chad Jennings…
- Nick Swisher‘s sore quad is much better and he could have pinch-hit and played the field today if needed. They just played it safe and gave him the day off with the All-Star break coming up, figuring six straight days off would do the trick.
- Rafael Soriano threw live batting practice today and isn’t all that far off from returning. “He’s getting to a point where we could see him in a [rehab] game fairly quickly,” said Joe Girardi before the game. Soriano is eligible to come off the disabled list on Wednesday.
- Eric Chavez‘s sore back is still bothering him, but he’s feeling much better and is close to resuming workouts. I still wouldn’t count on him for the second half, anything he gives the team from here on out is a bonus.
- Damaso Marte is not ready to face hitters but is still throwing bullpen sessions. Pedro Feliciano is still shut down with soreness in his shoulder.
Of course, the biggest injury news concerns Alex Rodriguez’s torn meniscus. He’s getting a second opinion today, but it seems like everyone involved thinks having surgery now is the best course of action. Like I said yesterday, I’m on board with that.
Eric Chavez suffers (another) setback
Via Bryan Hoch, Eric Chavez suffered his second setback in as many weeks, this time involving his abdomen. He’s on his way to New York to get checked out. Last week’s setback involved his back. The original injury involved his foot, remember. Chavez is sure doing a fine job of filling Nick Johnson’s shoes, and I have to figure the Yankees will be on the lookout for a left-handed bat for the bench at the deadline.
Chavez strains back during rehab
Eric Chavez strained his back rehabbing from his foot injury, a setback that will keep him on the shelf even longer than expected. It’s unclear when he’ll be able to come back now, it depends on the severity of the strain of course. Might be time for the Yankees to look for a left-handed hitter off the bench, no?
Injury Updates: Jeter, Colon, Feliciano, Chavez
The latest from the infirmary…
- Derek Jeter‘s rehab from a calf strain was interrupted by rain and wet grounds both yesterday and today. He did manage to take full batting practice (30 swings), field a few ground balls, and begin a running program once the weather cooperated this morning/afternoon. “Everything’s good,” said the Cap’n. “Steps in the right direction.”
- Bartolo Colon threw 60 pitches in a simulated game against minor leaguers (including the injured Slade Heathcott), broken down into four “innings” of 15 pitches. It’s unclear if he’ll make a minor league rehab start to jump right back to the bigs and face the Mets this weekend.
- Pedro Feliciano made 15 minimum effort throws off a mound, the first time he’s done that.
- Eric Chavez also took batting practice and played long toss with Jeter.
- Mark Prior will throw off a mound tomorrow, the second time he’ll do that in the span of four days as he works his way back from the groin strain from hell.
The Yankees also confirmed that Phil Hughes’ next rehab start will come with Double-A Trenton this Wednesday. After throwing 71 pitches last time out, I suspect he’ll be scheduled for 85-90 pitches. Trenton will be at home against New Hampshire, but it’s a day game (12:05pm ET start). You can get tickets here.
Jeter, Colon, Chavez continue rehab in Tampa
Derek Jeter, Bartolo Colon, and Eric Chavez are continuing to progress in the rehab for their various injuries down in Tampa. Jeter threw for the third straight day but has not been cleared to start running, which is what really matters when it comes to his calf issue. He’s expected to increase his workouts in the coming days. Colon was able to run sprints in the outfield for the first time since injuring his hamstring, and he has continued to play long toss as well. He’s scheduled for a bullpen session tomorrow. Chavez ran the bases for the first time today, going from home to first about a half-dozen times today. He’s been hitting for a while now, but this is the first time he’s run on anything more than a treadmill. Great news for all three but especially for Colon and Chavez, who have started testing their leg/foot injuries.
