“Red Sox Nation?” What a bunch of [expletive] that is,” he [Hank Steinbrenner] said in an interview with The New York Times’ Play magazine. “That was a creation of the Red Sox and ESPN, which is filled with Red Sox fans.

“Go anywhere in America and you won’t see Red Sox hats and jackets, you’ll see Yankee hats and jackets. This is a Yankee country. We’re going to put the Yankees back on top and restore the universe to order.”

That’s the best thing to come out of Hank’s mouth so far.

Yeah Hank. Tell RSN to go f themselves. Great stuff. Let the games begin. ;)

  • Adam

i hate the red sox just as much as the next guy, but i think hank has missed the point of “red sox nation”. i do not think that it means, our nation, the united states of america is overwhelmingly pro-red sox. i think the “nation” in “red sox nation” refers to the new england area that *is* pro-red sox, saying that they are their own little country united behind the red sox. frankly, i wish they were their own nation, because george bush probably would have found a reason to carpet bomb them by now.

  • Mike R.

I was hoping he would call out Gammons by name, but he’s my hero nonetheless. The guy says all the things I wish I could.

  • Jeff

I hate when he talks in negotiations… but this was great.

  • Steve S

That is possibly the greatest public thing ever said in the context of baseball. I love this man and let him rant on. In my opinion the guy has been perfect so far. This is so true on so many levels that it will make me feel good for a while.

  • Barry

LMAO I love this guys charisma

  • Manimal

I live in redsox nation, it sucks.
My respect for Hank just went up alot.
Atleast I can wear my giants jersey with pride.

        2 in 90 years…BFD

WHY do you come to this site Whitey?????????????????????

        • Whitey14

Just to see you nefarious ;-) Also, 2 in 90 years is invalid. We have 7 in 103 years. You guys constantly talk about having 26 even though 20 of them came before most of us were born so to be fair you should give us full credit for all 7 of ours.

  • Guiseppe Franco

I think this is just another example of what an embarrassment Hank has been in less than a year he’s been in the spotlight.

People were ripping Theo because of his classless remarks a few days ago about Moose and Brown (and rightfully so) and now Hank opens his big mouth and makes Theo sound like a diplomat.

Hank really needs to shut up and keep those kinds of stupid comments to himself. He should be more like his brother who stays away from the media for the most part and mentioned how badly he needs a girlfriend the one time he did talk to the media a few days back.

At least that was funny stuff. Hank is just an idiot playing with a new toy.

  • Phil

i have to give it to the Red Sox organization. Even though I hate Red Sox Nation more than anything, it was quite the marketing idea. It’s no mystery that RSN came from the brains of the Sox PR Dept, but lets face it, its been a success. Did you ever hear the phrase “Red Sox Nation” before 2004? No. The whole takin the ’04 WS trophy to every city in New England was all part of this Red Sox Nation BS, people over there bought into it.

    Yankee fans don’t need it.

  • Lanny

Did Hanks talking during negotiations really effect anything?

Hes not that stupid. He was honest. Brutally so.

He said there was a deadline on Hughes and then pulled him. The Twins thought he was full of crud. He wasn’t.

Im excited he held onto Hughes, IPK, Melky, Marquez, etc. And Im glad hes so passionate.

I think we were all scared about how it would look without George running things. Would they care? Would they spend money? Would they want to win?

I think that has been answered.

    • Guiseppe Franco

Hank doesn’t deserve one iota of credit for keeping the kids. In fact, he was the biggest advocate for making that deal. How many times did he speak publicly about how he was leaning towards pulling the trigger but others in the front office were against it?

It was Cashman and Hal – not Hank – who wanted to keep the kids and not make the financial commitment for Santana because they felt is was finally time to stop spending and continue the youth movement.

Hank also said there would be no negotiations with A-Rod after he opted out, so he certainly doesn’t keep his word all the time.

Truthfully, I agree with Hank more often than not. However, he telegraphs his punches way too often and his big mouth says too many stupid things that embarrasses the organization.

George, Hal, and Cashman need to issue a media gag order on the buffoon because he’s quickly turning into Mark Cuban.

      • Steve S

The Alex Rodriguez stuff was actually a breath of fresh air. A stupid man would have allowed him to walk away on the basis of him being stubborn and not wanting to go back on what he said in public. That would have cost him the best player in baseball.

As for his comments during the Santana negotiations. I know we all have put the seal of approval on what happened but the fact that the guy considered bring the best pitcher in baseball here and paying him the largest contract for a pitcher is a good thing. And while I dont think it was his intention to do so, his comments regarding Santana are ultimately what could have resulted in a better deal for the Yankees. While its debatable what was offered and asked for at the 11th hour, Hank’s open statements to the press is what allowed the Red Sox to maintain their offer, and ultimately made Bill Smith realize that his market is dwindling. I think the public updates on his thoughts with regards to transactions will have to slow down, but at this point what he has said hasnt hurt the Yankees. And ultimately, if Hank wanted to trade for Santana, it sounds like he could have stepped over Cashman and done the deal.

As for the classiness of this comment. He wasnt taking a shot at the team itself, he was taking a shot at the Sox PR machine, and the reality that ESPN is based in Bristol which is more than likely populated by people who love the Red Sox, and therefore the coverage has been influenced by that. And by the way, I think Theo was dead on with the Mussina stuff, maybe a little abnormal, but absolutely true.

  • Rich

I think the Sox should be ignored until and unless the Yankees face them in the playoffs.

My favorite tangent to this story… I just went to Wikipedia to look at the history of the term “Red Sox Nation”, and they claim it started in 1986 and blah blah blah… and then I clicked on the link at the bottom of the entry entitled “Gatherings of baseball fans” to see what other “nations” there are, and it listed three: Red Sox Nation, Yankees Universe, and Cardinal Nation…

    Cardinal Nation? Gimme a break…

But here’s the best part: each entry lists famous/notable/celebrity fans, like Affleck, Damon, Stephen King and Denis Leary for the Sox, Billy Crystal, Spike Lee, Penny Marshall and Jay-Z for the Yanks, etc. Who are the famous Cardinals fans?

Chingy, J-Kwon, Nelly, Kristin Cavallari, Matt Hughes, and Kenny Wallace, among others. Who the #$!% are those losers? That’s the best you’ve got?

    • Whitey14

I wish Matt Hughes was a regular visitor here…that would be a riot!

  • Around The Majors

    God Bless Hank

  • bostonsucks@life

Just another reason I can’t wait for the season to start. How long till we see this on a t-shirt and can I please have one.
Suck it long and suck it hard red sox nation…..

  • billyballa

Hank is ripe to be our next BOSS! I love the guy and think its great for Yankee baseball. Too replace George is impossible but Hank is starting out right. I have to say, when that whole Red Sox nation came out, it was so damm annoying I wanted to puke every time I heard it. The next year the Yankees had to release there new slogan “Yankee Universe”. And I was mad as hell. We dont need to be like them, they need to be like us. We are plain and simple “The Yankees” and that’s all we ever needed. The greatest name a team can own and I think Hank understands this very well.

p.s. does anyone else see a trend hear. It seems every team has a player, GM, owner, or mascot that is ripping there rival apart in the media to draw attention. Maybe its to draw attention away from steroid talk, maybe its sincere. I know one thing though, I love when it comes out of Hank’s mouth!

  • iYankees

to be honest, i’m a yankee fan that’s been to all parts of the country and, although you do see yankee hats/jackets/apparell, everywhere, there is still a red sox movement that has swept the country. this started a long time ago. it wasn’t just because espn vibed with that concept. it was largely a reaction to yankee success. either way, without the yankees, there would be no red sox reaction that united people. that’s just the way it is.

    • LiveFromNewYork

It’s also why the Giants were embraced by the country. David v. Goliath. The Patriots were being viewed as the football Yankees…and the nation rejoiced when they were destroyed by the “little guy” who happened to be from New York. We were on the right side of that equation and it was good.

the problem for both New York and Boston in baseball is that the rest of the country is getting sick of both of them.

    • Joe

I hate to admit it, but your right. I live in San Francisco and there are multiple Red Sox bars. I don’t understand it. A few prominent Yankees came from San Francisco and there are all of these Red Sox Bars and bull shit. If anyone knows of any Yankees bars in the bay area let me in on it.

  • irving schlemiel

Excellent point. The almost century of RS futility versus the Yanks has exploded into what that area is now enjoying – 2 WS victories in 4 years. That’s Yankee-like success!

Let ’em enjoy it while it lasts.

  • E-ROC

I see that Hank is making his mouth useful.

  • Tripp

I hope Hank drops F-bombs in every interview he does.

  • Phil

One thing that you so see from Red Sox fans more than any other fan: Wearing the hat and the shirt together.

Now I understand this if your goin to the game or gettin ready for a playoff game. But the red sox hat and the ortiz shirt in January? really? I went to college in Boston for 4 years and everyday you would see someone with both a sox hat and shirt on. i dont get it

  • Whitey14

Okay folks, I’ve been mentioning this for weeks and have been ripped for it several times, by many people (including Ben), but here’s the time for some honesty and looking past your yankee bias.
It’s okay for one of the yankees managing partners to speak out and make an ass out of himself (AGAIN) by disparaging the World Champion Boston Red Sox and all of us fans in RED SOX NATION (and Adam was correct, it refers to the nation of Red Sox fans and New England, not the country as a whole), but when Theo speaks up and rips a whiny ass, has-been pitcher, who bitched like a baby about traveling to Japan and spreading good will, you all trash him.
You folks can’t have it both ways. It’s either right for executives to speak and be unprofessional, or it’s wrong. It CAN’T be decided by what organization they represent.

Also, Hank is in denial if he hasn’t noticed that the WORLD CHAMPION BOSTON RED SOX now rank as America’s favorite baseball team.

    • nefarious jackson

go away Whitey, WHY ARE YOU HERE????????????????????

      RED SUCK NATION PAL. period.

    • nefarious jackson

Whitey IS A TROLL, why am I reading this SHIT on a yankee site????

BTW- how are those PAts doing these days???? smoke on that pal :)

      • Whitey14

Yeah, everybody likes to try to bash the WORLD CHAMPION BOSTON RED SOX, but you just sound dumb nefarious. I’d prefer not to “smoke on that pal” as it’s probably going to land you in jail as soon as you get caught.

Also, I’ve made this point before, but I’ll go ahead and make it again for those who don’t understand: New England fans are dissapointed that the Pats lost the Super Bowl, but for those of you who think it’s anywhere near as important to us as our beloved WORLD CHAMPION BOSTON RED SOX, your just fools.

By the way, did I mention that the BOSTON RED SOX ARE WORLD CHAMPIONS?

  • bostonsucks@life

Whitey did we happen to mention your a no talent assbag. Go away you sam adams sipping priss.
I’m sure there is plenty of sox pride site where you can all circle jerk on a biscuit to the likes of your super signing of bartolo colon. Congrats d-bag
