Yanks hope to honor Bernie

By

Despite an acrimonious divorce following the 2006 season, the Yankees still appreciate all that Bernie Williams gave to the game. To that end, they would like to honor him before the Stadium closes down in
seven months. “Obviously, Bernie is special to us,” Hank said yesterday. No date has been set for Bernie Williams Day, but that is sure to be a hot ticket.

Hey, being the only team he ever played for, why not. He deserves it. Look back at the years that he has given to the organization, not to mention the play-offs.

There may have been Yankees who could hit better than Bernie. There may have been Yankees who could field better than Bernie. But there has never been a classier individual to put on the pinstripes. I never saw Joe D play but Bernie, for me, was the most graceful, soft-spoken, and eloquent Yankee I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching. In my opinion he is the one who ushered in the dynasty of the late 90′s. Who can forget games 3 and 4 of the Baltimore series in 1996. His dramatic 11th inning home run won game 1. In game 3 he drove in the tying run with 2 outs in the 8th inning and in game 4 he sent the message that it was over in the 1st inning with a 2 run homer. The perfectionists will point to the 1997 Cleveland series where he didn’t come through but the times he DID far outweigh them. More? Down 2-0 in games to Atlanta in 1996, game 3, 8th inning, 2 run shot to ‘ice’ the game. AH! 1996! And ‘BURN, BABY, BERN!” I’m hoping Hank will go all out and give Bernie Williams the honor he deserves.

    Should be a great day…

Too bad Bernie’s fans won’t be able to get tickets to Bernie Williams Day (based on the rumor I’ve heard that single game tix are all sold out).

Marsha, you can still buy tickets to a lot of games through Ticketmaster. I was checking last night.
