Game 50: The Quest for .500, Part too many to count

Ortiz flap much ado about nothing
KLaw's Draft Buzz

Is it really the 50th game of the season already? Wow.

Nothing quite like a visit from the ol’ Seattle Nine to jump start a scuffling offense, eh? The 25 run the Yanks have scored in the first two games of the series equals their offensive output over the previous 10 games combined.

On the pitching side, Chien-Ming Wang is looking for his first win since he manhandled these same Mariners 23 days ago. With Kyle Farnsworth throwing 25 pitches yesterday combined with Joba being unavailable, looks like Rock ‘n Rohlendorf and Edwar serve as your bridge to the Sandman today.

The lineup that’ll face the 367th southpaw the Yanks have seen this season:

1. J-Dam, LF
2. D-Jet, SS
3. B-Ab, RF
4. Alexander Emmanuel Rodriguez, 3B
5. J-Giam, DH
6. S-Dunc, 1B
7. R-Can, 2B
8. J-Mol, C
9. M-Cab, CF

Man, Ichiro looks like playing CF for the Seattle Mariners is the last place in the world he wants to be.

  • mehmattski

So, Jack McKeon is managing the Yankees now?

I think HanRam has to be the worst nickname ever.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

ManRam is just as bad. If nothing else, it’s the gayest nickname in sports.

  • mehmattski

Richie Sexon is like Jason Giambi except he only has two true outcomes: K or HR. No amount of defensive prowess can make up for a .271 OBP.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Excuse me, Jason Giambi is a Major League hitter. Richie Sexson is a caveman with a club.

      • mehmattski

Yes, I was going for the “he’s like X, except not.” angle. Sorry for the confusion. There are some fans, however, who would rather have Sexson because he’s better on Defense. Those fans are insane.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

That was a damn good impersonation of John Sterling by Michael Kay there, “Uhhhhh, I don’t think so, every HR is High and Far and Gone” Lmao.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

I’ve always thought Jim Carey and Rick Carlisle (Dalla Mavericks Head Coach, former Pacers and Pistons HC) looked like identical twins.

  • E-ROC

I’m surprise that Ichiro doesn’t do that more often.

  • Joey

he hits the HR and still looks miserable in the dugout. and nice D Cap’n

    • E-ROC

Here’s a quote from Ichiro after yesterday’s game on Peter Abe’s blog:

“Playing on this team and seeing what is happening around me, I feel that something is beginning to fall apart. But, if I was not in this situation, and I was objectively watching what just happened this week, I would probably be drinking a lot of beers and booing.”

  • Ivan

Why do the yankees struggle against Washburn? The guy can give up 19runs per game and against the yankees look like cy young.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

    http://mlb.mlb.com/news/articl.....8;c_id=mlb

Matt Holliday was placed on the 15-day DL. BTW, anybody surprised in the least that you still haven’t heard a peep about Luis Vizcaino and his shoulder since he’s been on the DL in April?

  • E-ROC

Damon’s arm held up a runner at third. WOW! Oh wait, Richie Sexson was the runner.

  • r.w.g.

can’t believe i’m going to say it, but giambi would have had that.

  • E-ROC

I wonder if Giambi would’ve handled that groundball better than Duncan.

  • Ivan

For all the grief that Giambi gets at first, to me he might be a better fielder than Duncan.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Fielding the ball has never been the issue with Jason Giambi, it’s the fact that he has zero range and zero arm. He’s always been heralded with soft hands and that great scoop move, he just can’t actually get to the ball.

  • Mike P

I am confused, the box score says Wang is charged with 3ER, even though one came from an error. What’s the scoring on that?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

A walk for Robbie Cano after the count reached 0-2, nice.

  • E-ROC

Cano took a walk! We definitely make a comeback and win. Molina got a hit too!!

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

    Bah, Damon was safe.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Maybe not. Nice play by Big Sexy.

      • http://yankeesfuture.wordpress.com Pablo Zevallos

        ew lol…

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

I always thought that was one of the best nicknames in sports, I first heard about when he was with the Diamondbacks.

The Incomparable Mike Vick was another of my faves.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Baseball is such a weird game and the old saying that momentum is only as good as your next day’s starting pitcher rings true. The Detroit Tigers crossed the plate 19 times last night in their rout of the Twins, today they have scored just one run through their first six frames.

Clayton Kershaw makes his MLB debut at 4PM versus the Cardinals.

  • E-ROC

    Bleeping Beltre!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

With a struggling Raul Ibanez on-deck, would any of you have taken the chance and IBB Jose Vidro to face Ibanez with a force-out at every base?

  • Joey

wtf is with the Yankees and .500? It’s like Abreu and walls, every time we get close to it we immediately slow down and back off. I know the games not over yet, but come on guys!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

12.2 scoreless innings of relief by Edwar Ramirez on the season.

  • Yankee Clipper

Bobby is scared of the wall.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

BTW guys, the site time is about 9 minutes slow.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Unsurprising. Our host has been having some serious issues lately.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Ah Arthur Rhodes. Opposing managers never learn.

  • Ivan

    Abreu with a big double

  • Ivan

Wow your asking Putz to pull a Mariano here.

  • Jeremy

The prob is that Seattle doesn’t win very often but everyone has to win once in a while. So if they win now and face the Sux next we are doubly screwed. They got their win off us which means they won’t win again for 6 or 7 more games, meaning the Sux will sweep em and, have I mentioned, we’ll be doubly screwed.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Arthur Rhodes last four ABs against the Yankees LHB went like this: BB, 1B, 2B, 2B.

    • Jeremy

A guy named Arthur Rhodes should be teaching literature and not playing baseball. It’s just so wrong.

      • pete

        that was beautiful

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Putz gave up fewer hits last season than Matt Morris gave up in Spring Training this year.

  • Ivan

Even though I am a yankee fan, I just exited for Kershaw to make his debut.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

      Word.

  • Ivan

Good abat by A-Rod. A walk is just as effective as a hit.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Question, do you PH Hideki Matsui in place of Shelley Duncan or do you save Matsui to PH for Jose Molina?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

    Fucking Umpires.

  • Ivan

OMG talk about a bad call strike three

  • http://www.pinstripesplus.com ansky

terrible effing call but it was worth it to watch Putz faceplant.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Terrible play by Putz. You gotta just hold onto that ball and eat it.

  • Ivan

    down one.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Gameday had that called Strike 3 to Jason Giambi in the RH Batter’s Box. The 1st pitch called Strike to Giambi was a bit outside as well.

    Fucking Umpires.

    • Joey

Molina! Nice, now Mo comes in

      • Joey

that was supposed to be posted on the bottom of the page… whatever

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Why is Farnsworth warming up?!?! You gotta bring Mo in even if they don’t score again this inning.

  • http://www.pinstripesplus.com ansky

ps…nice baserunning by Arod to make sure he made it to 3rd.

    • http://www.pinstripesplus.com ansky

even better baserunning by Matsui tagging

  • Joey

NO JOE NO!!!!!!!! KRAZY KYLE PITCHED YESTERDAY!!!!!!!!!!!! NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Damn, Cano had that one lined up.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

    Tied.

  • Ivan

    Good Job Cano.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

    Hava Molina!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

I’m not a big believer in that spark, grit and energy crap but I don’t think we would have ever came back down 5-2 in the 8th inning two weeks ago.

    VAYA JOSE!!!!

  • http://www.pinstripesplus.com ansky

    HELL YEAH!!!

    Molina comes through!!

  • E-ROC

Great game! Great comeback! Go Yanks!

  • Ivan

Go Molina, but it seem that was a ball that Ichiro could of caught or even Balitein.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Edwar Ramirez deserves this Win, runners on the corners with two out and Ichiro up, he got him out when the score was already 5-2. That will be overlooked but that was a HUGE out.

    Come on Mariano!

    • Ivan

Yeah, if the yanks pull this one out, Edawr deserve a good amount of credit here.

  • Ivan

Kershaw struckout he first batter he face.

  • Joey

    Kershaw’s first batter: K’ed

that curve/fastball combo is pretty sick

    • Joey

he’s overthrowing a bit now (but then again it’s his first start and he’s pitching to Pujols now)

  • Yankees=warriors

Wow, the Yankees couldn’t have done better!
    Mo time~

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Clayton Kershaw strikes out the first batter he faces in his Major League career, Skip Schumaker. Fastball sitting at 95-96 MPH and he struck out Schumaker swinging on a 96-MPH heater.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Albert Pujols then greets him with a RBI 2B after a one out BB.

Welcome to the Big Leagues meat!

  • Ivan

Well Pujols just told Kershaw welcome to the Big Leagues

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Mo is just amazing. This guy’s spoiled us all these years.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

This HP Umpire is an asshole. He Ks Jason Giambi on a pitch in the opposite Batter Box but he calls Ball on a pitch just off the black for Mariano.

Better had called that a Strike, fucking ump.

  • Ivan

Lets go Mo get this last guy out

  • E-ROC

I wonder what quotes Ichiro has for this game, lol.

  • Ivan

Great win, now I gonna watch some Kershaw

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Yeah, I’m going to get MLB TV this week, between Max Scherzer, Justin Upton and Clayton Kershaw there is just too players I want to watch. Not to mention Mr. Hanley Ramirez.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Mariano Rivera against the 2-3-4 hitters of Seattle, P6, K-Looking, K-Swinging. Owned.

  • Joey

this season when Mo comes in, all my worries seem to disappear. The beginning of last season with him was different. Beautiful Mo, thanks the good Lord for ya!

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Gotta love Molina. I just swung hard just in case…

    • LiveFromNewYork

Jose sports this mega diamond stud in his ear after he changes. You can see the thing from another galaxy.

  • Ivan

Boy Kershaw is Erik Bedard with better stuff yikes.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Gameday had his last two Fastballs at 97-98 MPH, nasty.

  • LiveFromNewYork

    The Empire Strikes Back.

    • Brandon

it’s The Universe now ;) as in Yankees Universe

  • Joey

Mike, Ben, or Joe (or Jamal)- anyone hear any news on Mr. Sheppard recently?

  • LiveFromNewYork

Does this win take us out of last place?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Yes, we are now a 0.5 game ahead of last place Baltimore and a game behind 3rd place Toronto.

  • http://riveraveblues.com/2008/05/25/game-50-the-quest-for-500-part-too-many-to-count-2874/#comments andrew33

shocking and surprising, nice comebcak, out of last place, the now struggling baltimore on deck, who would ofthought after last weeknds debacle
    mets 1-5, losing today
    yanks 5-1

hopefully rasner and kennedy continue their recent success

  • pete

edwar has 12.1 scoreless innings this year. do people really think that we can’t get through the 8th inning without joba?

  • JeffG

    Matsi makes a big difference.
    Screw u Peter!

  • JeffG

Abrhams that is… but to you pete that just posted…. I like Joba getting hs due, and I like edwar but if they want to sit on that kid its a lot easier – & you know it.
