Game 61: Time to go on a roll

By Mike Axisa

The Royals are in town. David Ortiz, Dice-K, Manny and Jacoby Ellsbury are banged up. Did I mention the Royals - a team that has been outscored by 63 runs thanks to a 4.58 team ERA and a MLB-low .311 team OBP - are in town?

Thaaaaaaa Yankees’ lineup!

1. Damon, LF
2. Jeter, SS
3. Abreu, RF
4. A-Rod, 3B
5. Matsui, DH
6. Walk-off, 1B
7. Cano, 2B
8. Molina, C
9. Cabrera, CF

On the mound, he of the rotation high 154 ERA+, Darrell Rasner.

Notes: LaTroy Hawkins’ suspension was upheld, so he’s out for 3 games (that’s a good thing) … Chris Britton strained his ribcage while warming up yesterday, and has been placed on the 15-day DL, Dan Giese has been summoned from Scranton to take his spot (I say it’s 50/50 that the Yanks were just looking for an injury so they could recall Giese) … Mariano Rivera has a 1185 ERA+ this year … if you’ve missed any of my draft coverage, go here.

Chip says:

1185 ERA+ is quite impressive, that must be about what Hawkin’s actual ERA is right?

Joey says:

Wow Mike, the draft all day and now posting the game thread? I’m impressed…

LiveFromNewYork says:

Can Chris Britton catch a break?
Glad to hear Giese is on his way back.

Jamal G. says:

Is it me or has it felt like weeks since I’ve talked Yankees, Major League baseball?

Jamal G. says:

Conference call with Gerrit Cole is up, courtesy Peter Abraham.

Jamal G. says:
Mike A. says:

He sounds like he’s 10.

Alan says:

You’re not kidding, his voice sounded like nails on a chalkboard.

LiveFromNewYork says:

He sounds like he’s really on the fence about signing or going to college. The fact that he’s not over the moon about being drafted by his favorite team and he’s weighing college says he’s a really smart dude.

Mike A. says:

Nah, that’s just so that they can’t use it against him in negotiations. If he came out and said he was really anxious to sign, then maybe they offer a little smaller bonus. Scotty Boras made sure the kid didn’t diminish his leverage at all.

Sciorsci says:

At the very least it says he understands negotiations and he is good at listening to Scott Boras.

LiveFromNewYork says:

He’s good at something.

LiveFromNewYork says:

Remember that story last year about Arod’s slumlord building? Well TMZ picked it up THIS WEEK. They’re not so quick on the uptake those guys.

Sciorsci says:

Is Posada out of the lineup just because Girardi’s guarding him from back-to-back games right away?

Jamal G. says:

He wants him to play both Saturday and Sunday and that can’t happen if he plays tonight seeing as how Saturday is a day game.

LiveFromNewYork says:

Maybe the bubble gum is to blame for Cano’s mental lapses in the field.

Jamal G. says:

ESPN has the Arizona versus (#1) Miami game, 1st Rounders Yonder Alonso (Miami), Jemile Weeks (Miami), Ryan Perry (Arizona) and Daniel Schlereth (Arizona) are some of the top names in this game. 2nd Rounder Dennis raben (Miami) and 3rd Rounder Blake Tekotte (Miami) are also on the field.

Mike A. says:

Ryan Perry, the Tigers’ first rounder, is out in ‘Zona’s pen in that game.

Mike A. says:

Chris Hernandez, the kid pitching for Miami, could be the first overall pick in 2010.

Jamal G. says:

Tampa Bay took Kyle Peterson (C), was that a name to keep an eye on? I swear I’ve heard his name somewhere.

Mike A. says:

Kyle Peterson was a three time All-American at Stanford, 1st rounder of the Brewers a few years back. Pitched a little in the bigs but blew out his arm. He calls college games on ESPN now, and is in the NCAA baseball video game.

The pitcher and the catcher just drafted aren’t related (I think).

Mike W. says:

I understand the point about keeping the negotiating angle open, but I didn’t like the way his voice sounded (Cole) when talking about whether he would sign or not. It didn’t sound good at all to me.

And yes, he does sound like he is 10.

Mike A. says:

Nah, don’t worry about it. They’ll lock him up. Might take a while though.

LiveFromNewYork says:

But how much more can they give him than they normally give? Isn’t it really limited in what they will do?

Mike A. says:

Not at all. They can give him as much as they want. All MLB can do is sit and pout.

Jamal G. says:

For all you College Football fans, Pat White (West Virginia U’s electrifying QB) was selected by the Cincinatti Reds.

LiveFromNewYork says:

Mark Melancon gots dem, whaddya callit, intangibles.

When he comes up he’ll be under Joba-like rule. The Melo rules.

Jamal G. says:

What kind of stuff does Kyle Davies have?

LiveFromNewYork says:

oh Arod. Pretend there’s no one on base.

Chip says:

Those GIDP are hard to watch. And why isn’t the pitch tracker on Gameday working?

Jamal G. says:

Yankees 1st Round Supplemental pick Jeremy Bleich will be the starter for Stanford tonight in their Super Regional game against Cal State Fullerton on ESPN2 at 10:30 PM-EST.

Mike A. says:

Thanks for the heads up.

Chip says:

Wonderful, now I have to decide to watch that or go see Zohan. Decisions, decisions…..

Charles in SD says:

Annnnd, he was 1-hitting CSU Fullerton into the 6th, I think. Wicked curve that he was sneaking in back-door to righties. Cool.

LiveFromNewYork says:

Michael Kay talks through plays when he should be focusing on what’s going on on the field and then he comments ad nauseum on things no one cares about.

Joey says:

Why did Kay just call him Jared Cole?

Alan says:

Because Kay is an awful announcer.

Mike A. says:

I’m sure the fat guy from the Subway commercials is honored.

Mike A. says:

Hah. If you have Darrell Rasner on your fantasy team, Jose Molina just screwed you out of a K by hustling to catch that bunt popup on strike 3 in foul territory.

Sam says:

That’s true, but for people in H2H leagues, one K usually doesn’t make a difference

Ivan says:

Can Kay shut the fuck up about the bunt play.

LiveFromNewYork says:

Sam says:

For the most part, Rasner has a knack for getting out of trouble this year when he’s been in jams

Jamal G. says:

I don’t know if any of you guys noticed but PeteAbe later put up audio of a conference call with Yankees’ Scoutind Director Damon Oppenheimer (same link as before).

Chip says:

Sure I go to one Rasner start this year (against the Twins in Minnesota) and he pitches poorly yet dominates the rest of the league. I’m like a curse to this team I think, I should just stop going to games

The Fallen Phoenix says:

I just listened to the Oppenheimer audio over at Pete Abraham’s blog: pretty interesting stuff, and the Yankees sound very, very high on Bleich (no surprise). I’m really looking forward to seeing him pitch tonight.

And Cole’s going to get signed. No way the Yankees let him fall through their fingers.

Yankees also high on Biddle, obviously; Oppenheimer said he thought he could be a candidate in New York in a year-and-a-half to two years. Essentially, the Melancon track (had he not been sidelined with TJ).

Jamal G. says:

Damon Opp also said that the Yankees grade Cole’s Changeup as plus right now. Oh boy!

Chip says:

Rasner is doing a great Pettite “bend but don’t break” impression here

Chip says:

Man this Davies kid is good!

Jamal G. says:

Ryan Perry is warming up for Arizona right now.

BigBlueAL says:

Did u see the delivery of the kid starting for Arizona??? looks weird to say the least.

Mike A. says:

Preston Guillmet? I’m not watching, but I figured that who you’re talking about. That kid’s got a pair, he’s one tough mofo and a helluva pitcher.

BigBlueAL says:

Never caught his name. Im not saying he sucks or anything, dont know anything about him, although if ur starting a game of this importance at this level u must be a pretty damn good pitcher.

Jamal G. says:

Ryan Perry is coming in to face Jemile Weeks with 1 Out, Yonder Alonso is on-deck. Talk about a crystabll ball.

Mike A. says:

Good to see Perry brought his flamethrower on the trip to Miami. Wow.

BigBlueAL says:

Why is he not starting one of the games in this series??? Is he a starter or a reliever??? Bringing him into a game when trailing in the 5th inning, granted by just 1 run, seems like a bit of a waste.

Mike A. says:

He failed miserably as a starter. He’s a full-time bullpener now.

BigBlueAL says:

OK thanks. Certainly has the stuff to come out of the pen.

Mike A. says:

Wow, 5 first round picks playing in that game. Weeks, Alonso, Perry, Schlereth and Gutierrez (Miami’s closer).

(Comments wont nest below this level)

BigBlueAL says:

If we lose this game, i might throw up.

Chip says:

Why? Rasner’s pitching well and Davies has been damn good this year. We only really had the one chance early in the first. Hopefully, we can get something going when the lineup turns over. Hell, Cano just took ball one, it’s progress………

BigBlueAL says:

Kyle Davies has a career ERA of over 6 and has started over 50 games in the big leagues. I dont care how good his numbers r in AAA this year. But in general, losing to KC at home will make me throw up no matter what. And after Melky’s AB, even moreso now…..

Chip says:

Cano double, bunt him over, I’m loving it. Bring em in Melky!

BigBlueAL says:

This offense really frustrates the shit out of me sometimes.

Chip says:

And that’s exactly what they haven’t done this year. Get the man in from third with less than 2 outs, it’s hard to watch

Joey says:

Anyone else have MLB.tv? Holy shit, working fine the first inning, closed it, came back 10 minutes and I can’t even open it and I’ve been trying the last 45 mins to an hour already. Pay all that money for all these fuckin problems, its bullshit

Jamal G. says:

Jorge Posada has the biggest fingernails I have ever seen in my life, it is kind of creepy.

Sam says:

Despite all of Cano’s struggles at the plate, his defense has improved a lot this year

BigBlueAL says:

Last year he was excellent too, just made stupid errors at times, but his range was one of the best in baseball statistically.

Jamal G. says:

Damn good job by D-Ras there.

Chip says:

I’ll take it Rasner

BigBlueAL says:

Where was that in the 1st inning.

Jon says:

Are you serious?

BigBlueAL says:

Sam says:

Another strong performance from Rasner

AlexCT says:

any of you guys having trouble with mlb.com or gameday??

Sam says:

mlb.com and gameday are both not working for me, so I’m using cbssportsline to follow the sox game

AlexCT says:

thanks, i thouht it might be my connection. i constantly have problems with comcast. they are the freaking devil. but i have no other choice. espn gamecast kindof sucks, ill try sportsline

Joey says:

I was having a shit load of problems earlier with mlb.tv, but I somehow got them to work now (not sure what I did and I’m not touching anything so I don’t screw anything else up). Although I know it wasn’t me, it was mlb.com

BigBlueAL says:

Kay and Cone r idiots. The reason apparently Manny got mad at Youkilis was cause he threw stuff in the dugout after an at-bat, and apparently this has been a problem all season with Youkilis and has been talked to by the entire team about it.

mustang says:

where did you get that from ?

BigBlueAL says:
mustang says:

OK.
Thank you.
My apologies to Manny and Jamal G.
LOL
Inside joke.

AlexCT says:

espn.com had an article on it earlier today

Joey says:

I saw that on ESPN earlier. The whole team supposivly had to talk to Youk earlier this season because after every bad at bat he would have he would go crazy and throw shit everywhere and Manny called him out on it again and then slapped Youk. lol, good stuff

Sam says:

Why pinch hit Betemit there and not Posada? Are they just saving him for a potential ph appearance later?

BigBlueAL says:

assume didnt want to be left with just Moeller catching the 8th inning on. Posada isnt supposed to play tonight, so im sure if anything he could pinch-hit later where if anything he only catches extra innings if needed.

Jamal G. says:

The reason the Yankees kept three Catchers on the roster is so they can guard against any setbacks with Jorge Posada by not losing Chad Moeller and give Jorge Posada a full day of rest when he sits on the bench instead of just six innings of rest. Also, Wilson Betemit has been hitting the ball hard ever since he came off the DL. He is also a bench player and is used to pinch hitting more than a career starter like Jore Posada.

Joey says:

I’ll tell you what, Miami’s Hernandez (the SP tonight) was very impressive, I hope he has some crazy demands next year so he could maybe fall to us :-D

Mike A. says:

2010. He’s only a freshman.

Chip says:

So we can take him in the 15th round next year as a DES

Joey says:

wow, even more impressed now. Pitching like that as a freshmen?

Mike A. says:

I’m 90% sure he went undrafted last year too.

Joey says:

I was just about to ask… wow

Mike A. says:

Hah. I’m sure Josh Byrnes loves seeing his first round pick sit down and start icing his elbow after warming up in the bullpen.

Sam says:

Chip says:

The Melk finally comes through!

Joey says:

Melk-man! Thank you, finally someone hits with RISP

Mike A. says:

Man I hope the Royals don’t bring Leo Nunez in for the 8th. That guy is absolutely filthy.

Jamal G. says:

Unbelievably filthy.

BigBlueAL says:

Soria in the 9th is no picnic either.

Chip says:

I’m surprised the Raz is out there to start the either, not looking too sharp either

BigBlueAL says:

Can u blame Girardi for not wanting to go to the bullpen.

Sam says:

I really think it was the fact that Hawkins wasn’t available that scared him off…

BigBlueAL says:

Joey says:

webgem? c’mon…

Chip says:

Wow, I figured he was coming out there

Jamal G. says:

I love the HP ump’s K call, if only all umps could follow suit.

Joey says:

I prefer a little more theatrics (more fun). Like Buckner yesterday

Jamal G. says:

His strikeout call is the best thing ever, but I meant a Strike called.

Joey says:

eh, I like the little finger point thing I guess, never really thought about it too much

Chip says:

Wow, solid game for Rasner, I’m definitely impressed. Hopefully he can keep this up all season

Sam says:

Great job by Ras. It’s weird to say but he’s been the most consistent starter this year

Jamal G. says:

Jay Bruce has gone 2-for-3, 3RBIs, 2BBs, and a Run scored thus far. How does Joey Votto have four Stolen Bases on the year?

Mike A. says:

Wonder what they’re going to do with Votto once Yonder is ready.

Jamal G. says:

I have no clue, you think it is a forgone conclusion that Votto is trade bait in a season o two?

Mike A. says:

One time great Yankee prospect Ramon Ramirez warming up in the bullpen. Traded for who? Anyone know?

Sam says:

I want to say Shawn Chacon, it was one of those deals around that time. Abreu maybe?

Mike A. says:

Shawn Chacon it is. Ramirez and the never-heard-from-again Eduardo Sierra for Chacon. Worked out well for the Yanks.

Sam says:

Where do I go to collect my prize?

Sierra was rated as once having the best FB in the system by BA

AlexCT says:

Jamal G. says:

I would send Bobby Abreu right now, with two Strikes they are not going to issue an IBB in a 1-2 count.

BigBlueAL says:

im telling u, ARod with the Yanks in even numbered years……….

Jamal G. says:

Averages 35HRs with 113RBIs in 2004 and 2006, I’ll take those with a big smile.

BigBlueAL says:

everyone here takes everything i post too serious!!!!!

Mike A. says:

Whew, check out the LOOGY mowing down all the lefties. Why can’t the Yanks fine pitchers like that?

BigBlueAL says:

TurnTwo says:

all hideki does is smack base hits. he may not have the power he once did, but he is still a solid everyday hitter.

Mike A. says:

Seth Fortenberry with a cycle tonight.

Sam says:

Jamal G. says:

Fuck the umpire in the ear! Fuck him!

TurnTwo says:

that wasnt even close to a swing. awful.

Joey says:

wha?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Flynn says:

Awful call…. Still should have more than 1 run vs this pathetic team

Sam says:

Why didn’t they appeal to the 3rd base ump? He coulnd’t have thought that was a strike, too

pete says:

instant.fucking.replay. it will only hurt when it should.

Ivan says:

Nice Call from the ump

pete says:

wow buck didn’t even tag him with the ball

Matt says:

That has to be the worst call I’ve seen this season, even worse than A-Rod’s homer. WOW. And look at buck wave his arm, SIT DOWN

Clemson Rob says:

Is Bleich gonna pitch tonight for Stanford so we can finally see who he is?

Mike A. says:
Jamal G. says:

Heh, I really thought I was the only one who says that anymore.

Mike A. says:

I’m pretty sure I got that from you.

Ivan says:

And if you notice Giradi after the bogus K, he had that get the fuck outta here look.

Mike A. says:

The Royals really shut move Soria back to the rotation. Nunez is plenty good enough to close.

Jamal G. says:

I expect them to, I figure they are just making sure of what they have in Leo Nunez. Speaking of which, I can’t wait to see Brandon Morrow’s first start.

Jamal G. says:

Sorry Big Blue, it is kind of hard to decipher posts that people are just messing around with from the real dumb ass ones. That’s what smilies are for! :P

BigBlueAL says:

Jamal G. says:

Trenton is getting no-hit as they bat in the Bottom of the 8th.

Mike A. says:

Helluva night in the minors. SWB is tied 12-12, Trenton’s getting no hit, and Seth Fortenberry hit for the cycle.

TurnTwo says:

dont look now, but Trenton took the lead

Mike A. says:

Now I see what you guys were talking about. That strike three call is nasty.

Flynn says:

Nice job Cano… Putrid

Mike A. says:

Good Lord, Ryan Perry is still out there?!? Where’s Jason Stoffel?

Jamal G. says:

Damon Oppenheimer said that Scott Bittle was left in a game for seven innings! He said he will start in Tampa but will need some rest, a lot of rest.

Mike A. says:

He’s wrong, it was 4.1 innings, and he had almost a week of rest before that, and hasn’t pitched since (because Mississippi was bounced from the postseason).

BigBlueAL says:

Jamal G. says:

Tony Pena Jr.’s range saved the game, ouch.

TurnTwo says:

so thats what it looks like to have a SS who can range up the middle, huh?

i know… i kid, i kid… im just bitter…

Flynn says:

Wow… All I can say is gutless. Way to follow up a great win, shit the bed vs one of the worst teams in the majors.

TurnTwo says:

how do you lose this game? very disappointing.

BigBlueAL says:

You lose by continuing the trend of being 12th in the AL in hitting w/runners in scoring position.

TurnTwo says:

oh i know… more of a rhetorical question, but agreed… how many times can you have a runner on 3rd base with less than two outs and not get the run home?

do they have team stats for that kind of thing?

Mike A. says:

Yonder Alonso is about to conduct some b’iness.

Mike A. says:

Holy shit. That’s all you can say about that play.

Sam says:

That was insane. Even the announcer thought it was over

Flynn says:

Goddammed unwatchable.

Sam says:

This one stings. Wasted tons of great opportunities and great pitching from Rasner. I said before this series that anything less than 3/4 would be a major letdown, so they better kick some ass the rest of the series. I mean come on it’s the fucking royals!

AlexCT says:

why doesnt joe g. come out to argue that giambi call? easily the worst call i’ve seen this year. big situation, late in the game, 2 outs runners on…. its bullshit. even torre would have done his slow walk out to talk it over and let the ump know he’s an ass for even trying to make that call himself. that puts the bottom of the order up in the 9th against a great closer. im so mad right now i can’t even think..

Jamal G. says:

WHAT A FUCKING CATCH!!

BigBlueAL says:

That mightve been the worse piece of announcing in the history of baseball by Karl Ravech in the Miami-Arizona game.

Jamal G. says:

WHAT A FUCKING CATCH!

Jamal G. says:

Whoops, didn’t know the previous comment went through. Screw it, that catch was so good it needed double recognition.

Joey says:

absolutely. Definition of game saver: that catch. Also when the ball left the ball I wouldn’t have thought twice that was a homer

Jamal G. says:

As good as this Arizona-Miami game is, I am not going to miss a single pitch from Jeremy Bleitch as he goes in the Top of the 1st.

Another good catch.

Mike A. says:

These two dudes on ESPN2 need to stop playing grab-ass first.

Jamal G. says:

Lmao, there was nothing funnier than expecting to see guys calmy walk onto a grass field but instead watching two big dudes pound the hell out of each other.

Jamal G. says:

Take away the “big”.

Mike A. says:

So 4 first rounders have appeared in this game. Perry, Weeks, Alonso and Gutierrez. Could be 5 if Schlereth makes an appearances.

Matt M. says:

Rasner

5/26 6 1 ER Loss
6/6 8 ip 2 ER Loss

people can blame the horrible call on giambi s at bat (and i dont partly)
but the yankees need to be able to score more runs off of a pitcher who YES claimed had the worst ERA in MLB history for a pitcher who had started at least 50 games.

this offense has gone from “murderer’s row + cano” (which didnt work out too well) to becomming utterly helpless

Manimal says:

The yankees Second pick, Jeremy Bleich is starting tonight in Stanford’s first Super Regional game against Cal State Fullerton. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2. Start is 7:30 PST, 10:30 EST.

Jamal G. says:

They weren’t lying when they said Carlos Gutierrez has sink to that Fastball. Not seeing the velocity though.

BigBlueAL says:

Dont know about their rotation, and apparently their offense isnt all that, but Arizona has one helluva bullpen.

TurnTwo says:

are we starting a new post for comments for the Stanford/Bleich game?

Joey says:

I’m guessing continue in here or switch to DotF when it goes up

Mike A. says:

DotF will be up in a minute.

Joey says:

take those freakin boxers off my TV screen dammit! Someone KO the other already!

Mike A. says:

Fullerton is the home team, so Bleich won’t be on the mound until the bottom of the first anyway. I hope Jeff Kaplan is pitching for Fullerton, he’s got a nice and goofy delivery.

Jamal G. says:

So what’s the word on Stofel, Mike?

Mike A. says:

Filthy. Took the job after Mark Melancon left. First rounder next year.

BigBlueAL says:

i think U of Arizona has a better bullpen than the Yankees!!!

Jamal G. says:

Is anybody weirded out by the row of Catchers in Miami’s dugout?

These insurance fraud commercials are the LAMEST things I’ve seen on TV in a while.

Mike A. says:

Ok gents, switch it up to the DotF thread.

Jamal G. says:

Cool story, the Sandieo Padres called up 2B Edgar Gonzalez recently and he is the brother of Padres 1B Adrian Gonzalez. Must be amazing to play Major League ball with your own brother.
