Horne hurt, Angelini breaks out

By

Triple-A Scranton (7-5 loss to Buffalo)
Brett Gardner: 0 for 4, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 SB – 0 for his last 10, but he’s walked 4 times & stole 4 bases during that stretch
Bernie Castro: 2 for 3, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI – 5 of his 7 XBH on the year have come in his last 5 games (with a DL stint in between)
Juan Miranda: 0 for , 1 BB, 1 K
Shelley: 1 for 4, 1 2B, 1 K
Jason Lane & Cody Ransom: both 1 for 3, 1 R, 1 BB – Lane doubled & was picked off first … Ranson hit a 2-run HR
Chris Basak: 1 for 4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 SB
Alan Horne: 0.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 0 K – only 12 of 32 pitches were strikes (37.5%) … from Chad Jennings: “It was almost like I couldn’t get the ball there,” [Horne] said. “It didn’t matter what I tried to do. I’d try to add something to it and it seemed like the harder I tried to throw it, the less effective it would be. My breaking stuff was just as slow and loopy as I think I’ve ever thrown it, and I can’t tell you why. Physically I’m fine. They came out there and checked me out and I said, ‘Nothing hurts. I just feel dead. My arm especially. It’s like I have no life, no drive through anything.’ ” … that doesn’t sound good at all, hopefully it’s just a dead arm period and not something much more serious
Steven White: 3.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 3-6 GB/FB
Billy Traber: 1.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 0 K, 1 HB, 2-2 GB/FB – fugly
Scott Strickland: 2 IP, zeroes, 4 K - he’s next in line for a call-up, no doubt about it

Double-A Trenton (8-2 win over Portland) all Trenton does is pound Red Sox pitching prospects, Justin Masterson multiple times last year, Michael Bowden today
Ramiro Pena & Jose Tabata: both 2 for 5, 1 R – Pena swiped a bag & K’ed thrice … Tabata homered, drove in 4 & K’ed twice
Chris Malec: 1 for 5, 1 R, 1 2B - just missed a homer to RF
Cody Ehlers & Edwar Gonzalez: both 2 for 5, 2 R, 1 K – Ehlers drove in a run & committed an error on a missed catch … Edwar doubled, homered & drove in 3
Joe Muich: 1 for 2, 2 BB, 1 K
Reegie Corona: 0 for 2, 2 BB
Phil Coke: 6 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 5-7 GB/FB, 1 E (pickoff) – Keith Law was at the game (to see Bowden), here’s what he had to say: “coke was 87-90, doesn’t have a good second pitch (CB, CH), moves the ball around, throws strikes … but in a pinch, he could probably make a spot start in the majors and not get the shit kicked out of him” … I’ll take it, that’s more than you can say about anyone else in the Thunder rotation
Steven Jackson: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 4-2 GB/FB

High-A Tampa (7-1 win over Palm Beach)
Luis Nunez & James Cooper: both 1 for 5, 1 K – Cooper scored a run & swiped a bag
Mitch Hilligoss: 1 for 2, 3 R, 3 BB, 2 SB – avg is up to a more respectable .255
Andres Perez, Seth Fortenberry, CJ Henry & Chris Kunda: all 1 for 4 – Perez doubled, scored a run, was hit by a pitch & K’ed … Henry drove in a run & K’ed … Kunda K’ed & swiped a bag
Kevin Smith: 3 for 4, 1 R, 3 RBI, 1 BB
Zack McAllister: 6.2 IP , 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HB, 4-12 GB/FB – 5 ER & only 4 walks allowed in his last 28.2 IP … up to 76-13 K/BB ratio on the year
Josh Schmidt: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K
Edgar Soto: 1 IP, zeroes, 2 K

Low-A Charleston (3-2 win over Savannah) day off for Jesus Montero
Abe Almonte:, 1 SB, 1 CS 3 for 5, 1 R, 2 2B – had been 1 for his last 18
Justin Snyder & Bradley Suttle: both 1 for 3 – Snyder walked & K’ed … Suttle tripled, scored a run, drove in another & committed a throwing error… he’s absolutely killin’ it right now
Brandon Laird: 2 for 4, 1 R, 1 RBI
The Austins: both 0 for 4 – Romine DH’ed … Krum K’ed twice
Jeff Nutt: 1 for 4, 3 K – first 2008 draftee to play in a full-season league
Carmen Angelini: 4 for 4, 1 2B, 1 RBI – had only 11 multi-hit games on the season prior to today, hopefully he goes on a nice tear now
Adam Olbrychowski: 4.2 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 3 K, 8-3 GB/FB – 35-12 K/BB ratio in his last 45.1 IP
Jesse Hoover: 3.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 2-5 GB/FB

Short Season Staten Island‘s game was suspended in the middle of the second inning due to rain. The game started, then was delayed for over two hours in the bottom of the first, then started back up again, then finally called. I wonder if Brandon Braboy, today’s starter, will come back during the completion tomorrow after throwing only 0.1 IP today. Doubt it.

The Rookie GCL Yanks had a scheduled off day.

Jose Tabata is killing Red Sox prospect pitching batting .583 to be exact

    • Steve

Be nice if he can keep that up as he progresses to the big leagues . . . .

      • Kay Sturns

manny kills us; we need a bosox killer

  • Matt G.

What the hell is Jeff Nutt doing in Charleston? Catcher is crowded there as it is. Perhaps Romine moves to SI?

    • http://mvn.com/milb-yankees Ashish Skaria

That would be more like a demotion. :)

    • Tim

Are you nuts? No pun intended. Jeff Nutt does not seem like he is in the same class of prospects as Romine. He is substantially older than Romine and is hitting .200. Why would you demote Romine in favor of this Nutt?

  • Baseballnation

so that would mean he’s hitting oh, .230 against everybody else. They should have been sent him back to high A to regroup in which he might be promoted back to AA with a hot bat and clearer head.

    • Brandon

Yeah that also makes sense send down a 19 yr. old that’s starting to get it and show signs for the last 7 games of pulling the ball.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

Hitting .230 as a 19-year-old in Double-A is not as terrible as it seems. He is after all, 19-years-old.

      • Steve

Winter ball and another year at AA next year is in order. Let him earn his way through the system.

If he gets into trouble along the way, well that’s just Jose being Jose.

  • McCaff

    Ajax not playing tn?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Huh, I missed him on the update somehow. 1 for 5 with a run & K.

  • Miles Roche

If what Horne said is true, then he’s not hurt and you might want to change your title.

You should also change your Trenton subtitle since they WON 7-1. . .

    • Miles Roche

Pardon, i meant the Tampa subtitle.

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

        It’s fixed, my bad.

As far as Horne goes, I’m going to leave the title as is. He did leave the game with injury, so by default you can say he’s hurt. Just because he said he doesn’t feel any pain doesn’t mean that he isn’t hurt doesn’t mean that he is, either).

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

The absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence (someone will get this).

          • stefan

“SAY WHAT AGAIN! SAY WHAT AGAIN, I F***ING DARE YOU!!!”

            :-P

        • Steve

As notorious as the Yanks (and most teams) are for hiding injuries to prospects, when a guy says about 5 times “There’s no pain” I have to assume its just a dead arm thing. Considering the point of HIS season he is at (late start due to bicep injury) it sounds like the most likely explanation.

  • Miles Roche

Was thinking you might want to change it so people (Horne fans) don’t suffer a heart attack when reading the title. . .

(Didn’t mean to get on you, just politely tried to point it out to you.)

But it’s alright. You got your point across. . .

Steve Phillips: “The American League East will come down to two teams, the Tampa Bay Rays and the Boston Red Sox.”

Steve Phillips (2007): “The Yankees will not win the American League Wild Card, the Seattle Mariners will.”

Steve Phillips (2008, Spring Training): “The Detroit Tigers have the best offense in the history of baseball.”

That third one was not relevant to my point in the sense it has nothing to do with the AL East but it proves how fucking idiotic this man is. That is all.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Since his debut on Baseball Tonight, Phillips has been notorious for prematurely denying the Yankees a chance at a playoff berth. He has been wrong every year.

I love how his wiki page calls him out on it.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594331910 Jamal G.

“He was extremely critical of the Cincinnati Reds Rule V Draft acquisition, Josh Hamilton, suggesting that the Reds were condoning Hamilton’s years of substance abuse and other off-the-field problems.

Will Mulligan has noted the irony that Phillips was given his own second chance after some missteps in his private life while serving as the Mets General Manager”

That little bastard, how could he seriously have been raving against Josh Hamilton’s Rule V selection?

Yeah, that is pretty hilarious how Wiki notes it that he specifically is wrong about the Yankees.

Gardner was called up after the game tonight.

    • Rafi

I saw someone mention that in the comments on the trenton thunder blog, but haven’t seen it confirmed anywhere…do you have an article to post a link to?

  • Christopher

do a google search. there was an article in his hometown paper filed tonight after the game in buffalo… quotes from gardner and from his father about getting called up.

  • Joe

Brett Gardner has apparently been called up, should be fun

    http://www.thetandd.com/articl.....394678.txt

  • Rafi

anyone know who’ll be sent down/dl-ed for gardner? maybe use one of melkys options and let him straighten things out?

  • http://thunderbaseball.wordpress.com Mashmore

Where did you guys see that Keith Law quote?

  • Justin

I was at the Thunder game, and just wanted to say that Edwar Gonzalez crushed that homerun. Tabata’s just cleared the wall; the umpires actually called it a double, initially. Coke was okay, but Portland hit a few too many deep flyballs off him for my taste.

    • Brandon

Tabata’s HR was a line drive to left center, Edwar’s ws over that green monster, I said a long time ago his splits remind me of that guy in Colorado. (Not saying he is but his line reminds me of him)

  • Tripp

I think it’s worth noting that Montero has 5 walk and 1 strikeout in his last 10 games….

  • http://yankeesmtom.blogspot.com Steven S

I’m a bit confused into why they still have Chris Malec in AA when they only have filler like Ransom, Basak, and Green in AAA,
