Still alive

By

We’ve been criticized for our irrational optimism in the past, so we might get some flak for this. If the Yankees can win their final six games, including three against the Red Sox, and the Sox drop their next seven, well, then we’d be in line for a one-game playoff. Impossible? No. Improbable? Yes. But hey, the season ain’t over until we lose or Boston wins one more game.

It’d be totally awesome if the Yankees sweep Toronto and Cleveland sweeps Boston. That three game series against Boston could be huge.

    • Steve says:

The only reason this is even discussable is that we have the final 3 in Boston. So a quick losing streak for Boston and we have a shot.

  2. steve (different one) says:

with the off-day today, i assume Toronto will line up Halladay for Thursday?

between Burnett on Wednesday and Halladay on Thursday, i’m not getting my hopes up.

i mean, something like this has never happened. well, except for last year with the Mets.

  3. Chris says:

Now that you’ve finally brought this up, the Sox are guaranteed to win tonight. Thanks for jinxing it!

  4. Brett says:

At least we didn’t get eliminated at home.

  5. Brian says:

We’re all thinking it. And talk about the ultimate erasing of 2004. Doing it in Fenway, it would be the single greatest accomplishment ever. That said, the chance of making it past tonight is slim.

  6. Jamal G. says:

**Wonders how optimistic Joe will be about his fantasy team in the coming weeks.**

I was really hoping Toronto would pull out 2-of-3 this weekend, but that didn’t happen.

    Hey, why the fuck not?

    anythings possible

  8. Scott says:

    I admire your optimism..

  9. Natalie says:

What a sweet ending to a grand Stadium it would be if the Yankees won out (including a one-game playoff against Boston in New York) and Boston lost out, allowing the Yankees to slip into the playoffs.

If that happens, I guarantee the Yankees go to the World Series and win Game 7 in the Bronx against who else, but Joe Torre, Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers.

  10. Matt M. says:

one game at a time. its not IMPOSSIBLE..
all i ask for is for the yankees to have a shot.

cleveland sweeps boston, we sweep toronto. and then we control our own fate at fenway.

especially after watching all of those closing moments at yankee stadium. 2001 still KILLS ME. i feel so incomplete; that’s just not how that season should have ended, now is our chance to attone.

CALLING ALL GHOSTS. AURA/Mystique. hell…i’ll even take some midges right about now.

  11. serious jujar says:

We can wish in one hand and shit in the other and see which one fills up first.
At this point, we got a better shot of the Red Sox charter plane going down.

  12. Chip says:

I can accept that it’s not going to happen but either way, I want to sweep the Red Sox at home to end the season. If only we had scored some runs in all those 3-2 loses……

  13. ko says:

I’m just glad it didn’t happen yesterday. At least the Yankees had a mathematical chance in their last game in the stadium. Plus, we get another day to imagine how devastating it would be for the Yanks to catch and beat out Boston. I still look at Boston’s team and think they were extremely lucky to win last year and to be where they are this year. They’re just not that good.

  14. mustang says:

I was thinking the same thing as this thread last night, but when I told a friend he just waved the whole thing off as wishful thinking. But right now the Sox are down 1-0 all I wanted is for them to have a chance come Friday. Maybe the old lady is not done yet.

  15. mustang says:

I wonder how many of us have the Sox-Cleveland game on gamecast right now.
    I’m one.
