Ajax’s hot hitting continues

By Mike Axisa

AzFL Peoria (18-11 win over the other Peoria)
Kevin Russo: 1 for 2, 2 RBI, 1 BB – pinch ran for Milwaukee prospect Taylor Green after he was a pitch … you may recognize that name; Green is one of the two players the Indians could have selected as the fourth guy in the Sabathia trade, but they went with Michael Brantley instead
Austin Jackson: 3 for 6, 1 R, 2 RBI – 9 for his last 24 (.375)
Jeff Marquez: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 1 K, 3-1 GB/FB – 24 of 47 pitches were strikes (51.1%)

HWB Waikiki (7-2 lead over West Oahu in the 5th) all Yanks’ prospects have already exited the game, hence the early post
Austin Romine: 0 for 0, 1 HBP – left the game with an arm/wrist injury after the HBP … not sure how serious it is, but he’s got all winter to get better if need be
Andrew Brackman: 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 5-4 GB/FB – 48 of 81 pitches were strikes (59.3%) … his control is slowly coming back, but he threw a first pitch strike to only 11 of 20 batters … he had men on 1st & 3rd with one out in the 3rd, but the guy on third was thrown out trying to steal home, and then the guy on first was tagged out in a rundown to get Brackman out of the inning

Monday’s Game

AzFL Peoria (4-2 win over the other Peoria)
Austin Jackson: 1 for 4, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 K, 1 HBP
Juan Miranda: 0 for 3, 1 R, 1 BB – what, no extra base hits?
Kevin Russo: 1 for 3, 1 2B, 1 HBP, 1 SB
Kevin Whelan: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 1-1 GB/FB – only 8 of 16 pitches were strikes (50%)

HWB Waikiki was off Monday.

Here’s some highlights for the guys playing winter ball in the Caribbean:

Matt Carson: 2 for 13 (.154), 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 0 K, 1 SB in 3 games (DR)
Justin Christian: 7 for 33 (.212), 4 R, 2 RBI, 3 BB, 6 K, 6 SB in 8 games (Mex)
Reegie Corona: 3 for 7 (.429), 2 R, 2 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K in 3 games (DR)
Victor Zambrano: 11 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 10 K in 2 startsĀ  (VZ)- say whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?

Reggie C. says:

So your saying the Brackman line could’ve looked alot worse. Thanks for giving us some context. Five hits in five innings isn’t bad nonetheless so its not like he got roped. I like the fact he’s getting into 80 pitch count territory. It all starts with the fastball so once he commands it better and gets that strike 1 call early , he’ll be in good shape against high-A hitters.

Slugger27 says:

ur right, an 81 pitch outing is very nice to see…. i think thats the most important thing to look at

also, seeing him get some strikeouts is an encouraging sign as well… walks dont bother me, command isnt expected to be there, but getting Ks means hes still got his stuff, thats whats important

A.D. says:

Fuck signing CC we got the other big Z.

Brackman getting solid innings, all we can ask for

A.D. says:

Marquez, 4 walks….ugly

Brian says:

47 pitches….1.2 IP. Oy vey.

Reggie C. says:

Peoria drops 18 runs and Miranda doesn’t play?? That’s too bad. Miranda could’ve padded his stats in a game featuring that kinda pitching.

Slugger27 says:

as a diehard yankees fan, i admittedly know less than i should about the scouting profiles of some of their best prospects, and ajax is one of them

i was wondering if u could help me out mike, with some of ajax’s tools…. for an outfielder, hows his arm and speed? avg or very above avg? does he project more for CF or LF?

Manimal says:

Above average fielder, above average speed. Don’t know about his arm however. He did make 2 homerun robbing catches in the same game(it was the playoffs too)

Manimal says:

with out a doubt, its better than Damon’s arm. thats for sure.

Slugger27 says:

case closed… hes got a cannon

Mike A. says:

He’s a five tool guy in the sense that he does all five tools well, but nothing truly great. His speed, arm, fielding, and ability to hit for avg & power are all average or a tick above. That’s a deep fine player.

whozat says:

Ceiling is prime Mike Cameron, yes?

Slugger27 says:

hmmm… kinda sounds like another outfielder the yanks recently had for 16 years….

u think ajax projects more for CF or LF?

Manimal says:

Mike, is the Big Z actually starting to get better or are Venezuelan players just that bad.

Accent Shallow says:

Fearless 2009 prediction: Victor Zambrano has more of a positive impact in the big leagues than Kazmir. Mark it down.

If I’m wrong, I owe Mike, Ben, and Joe a beer.

Lanny says:

You should just buy the beer now because that is ridiculous.

Aaron says:

The thought of Zambrano even pitching in the big leagues in 09 is ridiculous.

UWS says:

Man, your sense of humor needs major body work. Actually, scratch that. You should sell it for scrap and buy a new one.

Lanny, would that beer have any lemonade in it?

steve (different one) says:

TSJC, you can’t make beer out of barley, yeast, water, and hops.

you just can’t.

Yank Crank 20 says:

If Zambrano ever makes it to the bigs in a Yankee uniform this year than our year would have gone terribly wrong.

Baseballnation says:

I fear the guy might have been on the mum juice while he typed that odd wager…

Bo says:

All Met fans just threw up.

http://pinstripealley22.blogspot.com/ says:

Johnny Nunez pitch a scoreless inning today

Ryan says:

a .267 BA is not really what i would consider hot hitting

Jack says:

I believe he was referring to the 9 for 24 stretch that he pointed out.

Mike Pop says:

Zambrano for Jon Niese ?
