Open Threat Thread: Can a blogger get some hot stove action?

By

I mean, seriously. These open threads are tough to write when the hot stove is running ice cold. Four years and $52M for Ryan Dempster? The D-Bags are interested in Ramon Vazquez? Yawn me. We had our fun with the “perhaps” 5/80 offer to AJ Burnett this morning, and there’s really nothing kooky about the AL MVP voting, except for an extraneous 5th place vote for Jason Bartlett. We need some hardcore hot stove talk, either that or AzFL games on TV.

Here’s your open thread for the evening, talk whatever you like. Hopefully something exciting will go down tomorrow, and until then listen to sound the ball makes off the bat of Bryce Harper. Only three years until he graduates high school.

  1. You think Bryce Harper gets LeBron James-esque hype prior to the 2012 MLB Draft?

  2. Thomas says:

“Hardcore hot stove talk” sounds dirty.

  3. kenthadley says:

ok….if we dont get CC, does adding AJ and Lowe really make us better than Pettite and Mussina of last year? if Moose comes back, arent we better off just signing them for a short contract of one or two years, looking to roll the dice on a Sheets for depth, and continuing to build the pitching internally…..use the $ on Texiera, and maybe another hitter? without signing an impact pitcher, it seems the better bet is to go for depth next year and use the money for hitting and maybe future opportunities.

    • JD says:

The Padres told the Yankees a Jake Peavy deal is possible even without Phil Hughes. They’ve scouted Hughes anyway, but he’s off-limits.

  4. Mike Pop says:

We gotta lost 100 games in 2011 to get that guy… ITS WORTH IT ! TRUST ME !

  5. Steve says:

    I’ll give you something.

I don’t believe for one second that Andy is demanding 16 mil. That’s the Yankee PR machine paving the way for his exit, and many fans took the bait this morning and came to the conclusion the Yanks wanted you to come to.

Since when has Andy been all about money? He took 30 mil from the Astros when the Yanks were offering 45. He talks often about retiring to be with his family, and he’s one of the few players where you actually believe it. He was one of TWO Yankee players who showed up at Bobby Mercer’s funeral. Not because he was especially close to Mercer, but because being part of the Yankee family means something to him.

If they’re going to let him go, fine. But lets not smear him as just another greedy ballplayer on the way out. This isn’t Boston.

    • A.D. says:

Its just his agent doing his job, his agent doesn’t want Andy to take a pay cut… that’s his job, the fact they’re starting the negotiation at 16M pretty much means it’s coming down

      If he plays next year

      • Steve says:

His agent knows what the rest of the world knows, that the Yanks won’t take him back unless he accepts a big pay cut. Negotiating how big the cut will be would start at 15 on their side and whatever the Yanks counter offer is. But if you remember Andy at the Joe Torre dinner, he said that the Yanks haven’t made an offer to him. Nothing. The silence around Andy has been deafening.

        They’re not negotiating, they’re spinning.

        • steve (different one) says:

i don’t think they are spinning, i think they are stalling.

          they are waiting for Moose.

i don’t think they want both old guys back, they want one or the other.

and i think Moose is probably first on their list.

  6. Andiamo says:

I don’t doubt that Andy’s agent has started negotiations by saying he dosen’t want Andy to take a pay cut. He is already limited in that Andy says he wants to play for the Yankees. I bet he ends up with 1 yr 12 mil. Andy better hope Mussina retires or he will be looking for a whole lot less from the Astros, if he pitches at all.

    • Steve says:

The report of Andy not wanting to take a pay cut came from “Yankee sources” according to the story.

Why would they leak that? If its ‘just negotiations’, which are usually kept behind closed doors? I don’t remember any leaks about Marte’s salary demands.

I think they’re paving the way for his exit.

  7. Mike Pop says:

Anyone think CC just flat out doesnt want to play for us ?

    • kenthadley says:

yes…..why else the non-response to the offer? does he think someone is going to beat it? he doesn’t want to come east to the AL, and is hoping LAD drop their $ on him rather than Manny……

      • Mike Pop says:

Im starting to think he just doesnt have ANY interest in being here

      • Mike A. says:

Chill out yo. It’s been less than a week. He and his agent are just waiting for some other teams to get involved, it’s just good business. Almost all major negotiations are like this, it’s just people are hanging on CC like he’s the Messiah.

        • Mike Pop says:

Isnt he the Messiah ? He was born again for the sole purpose to bring us a ring

          • B.George says:

Yeah you guys need to chill out a little bit. Its called negotiating. If you know you can get more money you are going to try and get it. His agent is just trying to figure out what angle to play. If other teams are interested then he is going to play the teams against each other to get more money. If the Yanks first offer knocked everybody out of the race then he is going to send smoke screens so the Yanks up the offer. You guys are ridiculous.

  8. Kevin says:

    Whats an open threat?

  9. Thomas says:

With Dempster resigning effectively taking them out of the Jake Peavy trade scenario. Do you see this lowering the price on Peavy?

I’m still not sure I’d want Peavy at his probable cost, but was just wondering.

  10. Ed - sign CC immediately says:

did you know Swisher hates Beckett?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgZi-zaOshQ (the first 10 seconds)

  11. A.D. says:

Anyone think the cubs have any chance of moving Fukodome

    • E-ROC says:

CashMoney just told me that Fukudome will be pinstripes in 2009. If I had to guess Cash is will only offer Chris Britton if the Cubs pay half.

  12. Andiamo says:

The Daily News calling CC a Cash COW on the cover is a scary precognition of what the NY media could be.

  13. Mike Pop says:

    Drew Stubbs or A-JAx?

    • Mike A. says:

Jackson, easily. When your worst tool is your ability to put the bat on the ball, it doesn’t matter how well you do everything else. However I will say that Stubbs made the greatest catch I’ve ever seen live – ran a mile and made a diving catch on a blooper in the ’05 CWS.

  14. Andiamo says:

Any interst in getting Felix Pie from the Cubs for CF. They have soured on him and he still has a lot of potential.

    • Mike A. says:

Another guy that would have the BUST tag firmly applied if he was a Yank. Why are people willing to be more patient with other team’s prospects than they are with the our own?

      • Mike Pop says:

Cuz it involves buying low on high potential which us Yanks fans like to do.. Dont give up top prospects.. We want to buy low like Swish

        • Steve H says:

I see what your saying, but it doesn’t make sense. If we traded low for IPK or Hughes right now, would all of the Hughes/IPK haters like the trade? They probably would, which is the part that makes no sense. Of course they are the same people, that if we did trade Hughes and he became a start, they’d deny everything bad they ever said about the kid.

          • Mike Pop says:

I didnt say trade low I said buy low.. Does that make sense ? Or did I explain it bad or am I not understanding what your saying ? Cuz im a bit confused

            • Steve H says:

Sorry. Your statement itself made sense. But the perception that many fans would have doesn’t make sense. If Pie was a Yankee these last few years, everyone that hates on Hughes and IPK would have been hating on Pie for years now. Yet if we traded for him right now, those same people would love the trade, even though his performance is what it is, and has been for the last few years (regardless of what uniform he was wearing) Now I don’t think I’m making much sense, but I hope you get my drift. If we could buy Pie cheap, I’d be interested.

              • Mike Pop says:

Alright dude I got what your saying now and I agree with ya.. People arent patient but I think that also comes with the fact that we havent won shit in 8 years.. At least the way the Yanks look at it.. We gotta win every year baby !

          • Mike Pop says:

Wait you saying if they were on different teams and not they Yanks ? IF thats waht ya meant then I got it now

    • Thomas says:

I wouldn’t mind having Pie, but I have a feeling he will never reach that potential especially in NYC. I wouldn’t trade anything more than Melky for him.

  15. Andiamo says:

Pie could potentially be a lot better than Melky or Gardner. Jackson is still a way off. He (Pie) might be cheap and a worthwhile gamble. We have to get younger and more athletic.

  16. Ivan says:

How good could Swisher be for the yanks this season?

Are my expectation reasonable if I say he can go:

    .270/.375/.500

Type of player the yanks would surely benefit.

    • Steve H says:

Average is not reasonable. Slugging would be a career high, but I (optimistically) think that’s possible. His best years came in a big time pitchers park, the short porch could be very beneficial.

      • Steve says:

Yeah, I’d love to see his fly ball charts, if anyone knows where to find that stuff. I’m hoping the Yanks see something I don’t, because they’re giving every indication that he’s their 1B.

        • Mike A. says:

MLB.com has them. There weren’t any fly balls that were turned into outs at The Cell that would have been homers at the stadium, and there’s maybe 3 or 4 doubles that would have been out, but I say that without knowing the nature of the hits (line drive, bloop, rocket off the top of the wall, etc).

    • Steve says:

He’s never hit .270 in his life.

He’s only had an OBP above .375 once.

He’s never slugged .500 in his life.

      • Ivan says:

He can certainly hit .270 it’s not like im asking him to hit .300

Plus, Swisher can certainly have a OBP over .370
and if his power #’s improve he can slug .500 or at least .480.

        • Steve says:

I know Paul O’Niell and Scott Brocius came here and put up numbers well exceeding what they had done previously, but guys like that are few and far between.

It’s unreasonable to expect someone to have a career year just because they put on the pinstripes. Especially coming off such a bad year.

        • Frank, C-Town says:

So you ask if your expectations are reasonable, then someone says you are way high, and you tell them that they are wrong. Why ask if you know the answer?

    • Mike Pop says:

      270 with 27 hrs and 95 rbis baby !!

    • Ed - sign CC immediately says:

the short porch will definately help out Swish.

    • T-Dizzle says:

he isnt that good i dont even like that trade he hit 219 and all the coaches hated him i mean its good we didnt give up much but still swish aint that great and now we have his contract for 3 years

      • Steve says:

I don’t know about all the coaches, but his manager certainly did.

But lets face it, Ozzie Guillen is an asshole. Having him hate you should probably go in his “+” column.

        • Steve H says:

          Ozzie Guillen hates Nick Swisher.
          Nick Swisher hates Josh Beckett.

Nick Swisher is the common thread in these 2 statements, I’m going to take Swisher’s side.

      • Ivan says:

Yea he hit .219, but his BABIP was less than .250

Plus, despite the offensive struggles he had over 80 BB’s and I think was in the top 3 in baseball in pitches per plate appearance. Ican certainly see him have a big year in 09.

        • Steve says:

Maybe his BABIP was so low because he was making shitty contact. The difference between a soft line drive and a hard line drive is often the difference between a hit and an out. That stat isn’t all about luck, it can also tell you about how well he’s hitting the ball.

On a side note, BABIP is more useful for pitchers than hitters, and yet most often you see people using it applied to hitters.

          • Mike A. says:

That’s absolutely true and it’s entirely possible that Swisher’s bat has just slowed too much. Maybe he’s hiding and injury, maybe it’s just a mechanical flaw.

It’s not often a 27yr old guy that has previously demonstrated the ability to hit major league pitcher just loses it, which is why eveyone’s banking on a rebound.

          • Ivan says:

Yea but his LD% was higher in 08 than in 07 so it kinda indicate that bad luck was involed.

Hey im not saying he’s a lock to bounce back but the potential is certainly there.

      • Mike A. says:

Is he better than Wilson Betemit? Yes. End of story.

I think people don’t like the move just because they have one less thing to bitch about now.

  17. T-Dizzle says:

I think damon should have gotten some votes for MVP

    • steve (different one) says:

      of course you do.

      • T-Dizzle says:

what does that mean how can u not think so he tremendously hlped the yankees hes one of the biggest reasons we won 88 games

      • T-Dizzle says:

        here you go wise guy

        pedroia obp = 376
        damon obp = 375

        pedroia hr = 17
        damon hr = 17

        pedroia rbi = 83 batting 2nd and 3rd
damon rbi = 71 hitting leadoff

        pedroia sb = 20
        damon sb = 29

so if pedroia won u tellin me damon didnt even at least deserve SOME votes even for like 10th place or were u just making a jackass comment for no reason like u alwasy do??

  18. Mike Pop says:

I really hope Gardner can put up some decent numbers.. I hope he shows that he can play at this level.. Itd be nice to see him succeed so we could rely on him and not have a black hole in the lineup

    • Steve says:

He has a huge supporter in the manager, and hit .294 for the month of August+September this year. He’ll get every chance to win the job out of Spring Training, and it doesn’t look like he’ll have much competition.

But many Yankee fans had tuned them out already after the Red Sox took 2 of 3 at the stadium, so they missed it and still think he hit .161 for the season.

      • Steve H says:

Ha! Love the last sentence. So true.

        • Steve says:

People act like Gardner is some guy off the street who can run fast and won a job in camp. He was a 3rd round pick, so the Yanks must have liked a lot him for some reason. He also won “best plate discipline” in the Yankee system from BA last year.

He’s always been a slow starter at each level, and most Yankee fans just have zero patience for rookies.

          • Old Ranger says:

Your two paragraphs are music to my ears! The only thing you left out was “Instincts”, which is one of the things a player has or not…it can’t be taught. Brett will be just fine, if they give him the same chance they gave Melky. 27/09.

  19. B.George says:

    Mike,

Can you have a column on that moron Michael Kays hatred for Phil Hughes? Everytime I listen to his radio show and Phil Hughes name is brought up he trashes the living day lights out of him saying that he is the worst pitcher in the history of baseball and that he is a bust like some of these morons who post here write about. And there should be a drinking game on how many times Michael Kay brings up Joba Chamberlains name during Yankee broadcasts.

  20. Reggie C. says:

Lets say Tex re-signs with the LAA as cash doesn’t offer the highest top-dollar. Do you think that increases the chances that cash pursues an OF (adam dunn)?

With cash seemingly disinterested in pursuing Manny or offering Tex a top-dollar AAS, does that increase the chances that we see somebody like Dunn in pinstripes? Is Dunn worth losing the type A draft picks?

    • Mike A. says:

Dunn’s a guy that will still be available in January I think. The D-Backs might not even offer him arbitration because they couldn’t afford it if he accepts, so he might not even cost a pick. He’ll also come relatively cheap, however he offers nothing defensively.

      • Steve says:

Yeah, the D-Backs had to let Unit go and according to reports the other day they cut 10% of their office staff due to the economy.

        • Mike A. says:

RJ was willing to take a 50% pay cut to stay with them, so he would have pitched for $5M in 2009. How do you not sign him at that price? You make the money work, trade Chad Tracy or Eric Byrnes for pennies on the dollar if you have too, it would be worth it.

If RJ’s remotely as good as he was this year, he’s a steal at $5M.

      • Reggie C. says:

i’m just bringing up Dunn as a possibility b/c MLBTR had a blurb from the Star Ledger that Swisher will play almost exclusively as a 1B. The Star Ledger has got terrific coverage of the club, better than that tabloid Post.

If there’s no Tex or Manny in the works, would you be cool with signing Dunn?

    • Steve says:

Last thing we need is another corner OFer. I can see some people not liking Gardner, but we have RF/LF pretty set with Damon/Nady/Matsui and Swisher (if we sign Tex and he becomes a super sub).

  21. Michael says:

    …….the calm before the storm………..”perhaps”

  22. B.George says:

Lets say Yanks are don’t want Brett or Melky as there starting CF…..what are some viable options?

  23. Adam says:

I’d have rather seen a Dunn signing as opposed to the Swish deal.

    • Mike Pop says:

Lol… Idk how people hate the Swish deal.. We gave up nothing for him. Like seriously nothing at all..Knock on Wood..Marquez comes up next year and throws 2 no no’s

    • steve (different one) says:

i don’t get this. even if you want to sign Dunn, you should STILL make the Swisher trade.

there was almost no cost in talent, and his contract is relatively small.

if you are the Yankees, you make the trade and worry about where to play Swisher later.

      • Ivan says:

Yea the Swisher was no brainer period.

      • Adam says:

Oh, I don’t hate the Swish deal. It’s fine. But I will hate it if $$$$man uses it as an excuse, when there is none from a financial perspective, to not sign Mark Teixeira.

        • steve (different one) says:

when there is none from a financial perspective

          says you.

i am firmly in the sign Teixeira camp, don’t get me wrong, but none of us know 1) what Teixeira will sign for or 2) what the Yankees internally feel they can afford.

  24. Mike Pop says:

The Hancock commercial is great.. “Will Smith is the coolest superhero ever”… Did a 4 year old write that ?

  25. Ivan says:

Yo im really lovin this new Ludacris song “One More Drink”. That song is mad hot and funny.

  26. steve (different one) says:

    newsday:

The Blue Jays already have offered a four-year, $54-million deal to retain Burnett, according to the Toronto Star. The Yankees’ offer is expected to top the Blue Jays’ in average annual value. However, a source shot down a report that the Yankees would offer five years and $80 million. They will not make an opening bid of more than four years or anywhere near $80 million, the source said.

    OMG CASHMAN IS TEH SUCKS!!111!! I CAN’T BELIEVE THEY WENT $80M FOR 5 YEARS!111!!

    signed,
every yankee fan on earth 6 hours ago

  27. Phil Franchise says:

What pitchers are out there that could be had via trade? Maybe those who’s value is down. Eric Bedard was being floated mid-season after a very subpar introductions to the AL West. With new leadership in Seattle could they be looking for a fresh start?

What about a Dontrelle Willis project? I’ve heard the Sox have an interest in him. He strikes me as someone who Eiland and his minor league staff could get back into form.

I’d love to see Cashman return to his late 90s roots of finding undervalued talent (O’Neil, Brosious, Tino, etc). I think Swisher could be along these lines, but would love to snag a pitcher who could round out the rotation nicely without breaking the bank or sacrificing the farm.

    Thoughts??

    • steve (different one) says:

most of the bullpen was constructed this way. Aceves could maybe fit this definition.

the only other way to get a starter on the cheap is probably to sign a guy coming off an injury. someone like Colon maybe.

    • Mike Pop says:

Bedard no good.. He wont be back till midseason I believe

    • T-Dizzle says:

tino oneill both came way before cashman was gm but i like dontrelle we should get him and try to get him back to cy young form

  28. T-Dizzle says:

    for steve different one

    pedroia obp = 376
    damon obp = 375

    pedroia hr = 17
    damon hr = 17

    pedroia rbi = 83 batting 2nd and 3rd
damon rbi = 71 hitting leadoff

    pedroia sb = 20
    damon sb = 29

so if pedroia won u tellin me damon didnt even at least deserve SOME votes even for like 10th place or were u just making a jackass comment for no reason like u alwasy do??

    • Steve H says:

So your argument may prove that Pedroia shouldn’t have won it. But Damon would have been 3rd on the Yankees, a non-playoff team. Name your Top 10, Damon should be nowhere near top 10.

      • T-Dizzle says:

it is that pedroia shouldnt have won it what i am saying is that there are several players on a lot of teams (damon) that had extremely similar numbers that nobody even thought about
i guess my point is that if a guy like pedroia finsishes 1st then a guy like damon should at the very least get some 10th place voets

        • Steve H says:

No, because there are way more than 10 players ahead of Damon on the MVP list. Just because the writers make 1 (or several) mistakes doesn’t mean the whole vote will be a mistake. The #’s you have are close (but limited). Pedroia was a better player. So were A-Rod, Abreu, Youk, Sizemore, Longoria, Mauer, Morneau, Quentin, Kinsler, Hamilton, etc, etc, etc.

    • steve (different one) says:

      2B. LF.

      please stop.

      • steve (different one) says:

so if pedroia won u tellin me damon didnt even at least deserve SOME votes even for like 10th place or were u just making a jackass comment for no reason like u alwasy do??

yes, i was just making a jackass comment AS USUAL, but i admit that i thought you meant Damon should have gotten some FIRST PLACE votes.

        which is absurd.

but now that you clarified, i take it back.

  29. Greg P says:

Say no to Dontrelle. For whatever reason, the Tigers gave him a 3 or 4 year extension above market value. He’d just be a Pavano-like albatross.

  30. B.George says:

Im not saying I want this but you do you think are the odds of Pettite not re-signing and an open competion for the 5th rotation spot?

Cause I have a feeling this is going to happen

    • Phil Franchise says:

I know it’s probably the minority, especially b/c i LOVE Pettite, but i think that ship may have sailed. With Mussina likely out there could well be a competition… that or a big incentive laden deal for Sheets (who i have always liked and would like to see the Yanks make a run at).

  31. Greg P says:

I’d have no problem with Phil, IPK, the Mexican Gangster, and Giese fighting it out for the 5th spot. At least one of them would prove to be an adequate 5th starter.

  32. Mike Pop says:

Id rather see Lowe in a red sox uni than Burnett
