Where’s CC?

By

You know how yesterday morning I mentioned how it was perfectly normal that we hadn’t heard anything about CC’s response to the Yankees offer? Turns out, we didn’t hear back because the dude was booked solid. And we probably didn’t hear back today because he was freakin’ exhausted.

First, let’s start with Jon Heyman’s guy, who says that Sabathia was “in Las Vegas over the weekend participating in a [golf] and poker tournament for sports stars.” Hey, the guy’s got money to burn. Unfortunately, I was not able to find the results of this tournament. According to this dude, Sabathia is no good at poker.

CC must have been flying this weekend, because Peter Gammons has word that he was in Houston attending a high school football game. Fellow free agents Adam Dunn and Orlando Hudson were also supposedly present, along with “other friends.” I’m guessing these friends who won’t be signing multimillion-dollar contracts this winter.

Kat O’Brien spoke to “someone close to the lefty” and found out that he was at a wedding. I wonder if this wedding was in Houston or Las Vegas. Ken Davidoff says that Sabathia “took the weekend off to chill out with friends and family,” but how mich chillin’ can you do if you’ve always got a flight to catch?

does anyone know the progess of Justin Christian’s transformation of Chone Figgins super utilty player is going? If Cashman is serious about it, then I guess he could break camp with the team come spring training.

    • Mike A. says:

It’s not really a transformation into a supersub, all they’re trying to do is increase his versatility. He played second base and some shortstop early in his career, and now they’re trying to see if he could do that again in a reserve role. He is what he is.

    I won the Melancon hat!

“MLB.com’s Corey Brock has the latest on Jake Peavy, after speaking to Padres GM Kevin Towers.

It doesn’t sound like much is going on with the Yankees, despite Ken Rosenthal’s report of numerous discussions. Towers says he’s had “no direct conversations with Cashman about Peavy over a period of time.” Towers is currently focused on the Cubs, but admits that a third or even fourth team would need to be involved. He hasn’t talked to the Angels about Peavy.”

Sounds to me like the market just isn’t there, which means the price will have to come down or he doesn’t get moved. Buster Onley said that in order for the Yanks to get involved either the price was going to have to come down and/or they would have to strike out on their free agent targets. Looks like the price is coming down.

IPK, Melky, Cervelli and any 2 relievers not named Melancon or Mo.

If he can be had for a B-list package, you have to go for him over Burnett.

    • Manimal says:

5 for one deals barely ever work out. trade swish Hughes and maybe Veras or something.

      • Steve says:

Towers will have to decide if the package is worth dealing him, or if he’d rather hold onto him and deal him at next year’s trade deadline.

I don’t know how Towers would value that package, just throwing something out there to reflect the diminishing market. I never took the Cubs all that seriously, they have a garbage farm system and Towers is effectively admitting it. Peavy hasn’t made it easy on him. Giving Towers a handful of teams really limits his ability to deal him.

        • Chris says:

I think the wild card here is how much motivation Towers has to move Peavy. The Padres owner is going through a divorce and wants to cut salary. That may make it impossible for Towers to keep Peavy, and he’ll just have to take what he can get.

  8. Steve says:

“The Yankees, according to several industry insiders, spent yesterday preparing an offer – perhaps a five-year deal worth about $80 million – for Toronto righty A.J. Burnett. This would come after they offered Milwaukee lefty CC Sabathia a six-year contract worth between $140 million and $145 million.”

5 years of AJ Burnett. That’s like 2 in dog years.

    • pat says:

2 in dog years and 10 in fan years

    • CountryClub says:

Wow, really? This is coming from the Post so i guess we have to take it with a grain of salt. But a 5 year deal at 16 mil per for an injury prone pitcher who will be 39 in the last year of the deal? How does that make any sense at all. I’d rather give him 60 mil for 3 years. He’d still be able to sign another deal at that point and no one will come close to matching us paying 20 mil per year.

  9. Nickel says:

“And we probably didn’t hear back today because he was freakin’ exhausted.”

He’s exhausted?! He has no right to be exhausted! Maybe he should try four years in Carl Pavano’s shoes and see how exhausted he gets!

Hes at the all you can eat buffer with Prince
