Caribbean Series kicks off today

As Torre backpedals, Moose calls out former boss
Open Thread: How much does that scoop cost?

Today is Day One of the Serie del Carib, which runs through the end of the week. MLB Network is carrying the Venezuela-Dominican Republic game at 5pm Eastern, as well as the Mexico-Puerto Rico matchup at 10pm, so if you’re yearning for some live baseball action, here’s a nice little hold over. Maury Brown at The Biz of Baseball has the rest of the broadcast schedule, including the announcers.

There are no current Yankees (minors or majors) playing this year, but there are some notable ex-Yanks in the event, namely Felix Rodriguez, D’angelo Jimenez, Ruben Rivera and Jackson Melian. By far the best big leaguer playing is the Padres’ Adrian Gonzalez, who’s suiting up for Mexico and will be a teammate of Bill Pulsipher. Yes, that Bill Pulsipher. Jorge Aranguare Jr. of ESPN took a deeper look at each team’s roster.

Enjoy the games if you’re going to watch.

Ooh, F-Mart and Bonificio are playing. F-Mart should be fun to watch.

  • The Evil Empire

This is like an appetizer for me, i’ll be watching

    • The Evil Empire

This spanish commentator is killing meeeeeeee

  • ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops

Felix Rodriguez, D’angelo Jimenez, Ruben Rivera and Jackson Melian

    Bad memories…

    • Elston32

The old reports in Baseball America almost portrayed Jackson Melian and Bronson Sardinha as the new versions of Mantle and Maris. The list of smoke-blown/failed Yankee prospects is too numerous to contemplate.

      • ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops

Rudy Guillen, Anderson Amador, Deivi Mendes, Jason Arnold, Ed Yarnall…

        • Elston32

Good Lord. That’s quite a start. Thanks! (feeling ill for some reason).

          • ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops

I almost threw up thinking about it. Just wanted everybody to share these feelings.

      • Reggie C.

int’l reporting has gotten alot tighter since then ..

  • Mike Pop

Well this is okay but in another month we got the WBC to watch. That will be better but at least this is baseball.

    • The Evil Empire

Yup, when does the WBC start?

      • Mike Pop

        March 4th or 5th I believe.

Bill Pulsipher… so I take it citizenship isn’t a requirement.

  • Brooklyn Ed

…and Ramon Ortiz continues to be a bust. So how come the Yanks can’t hit against him? :confusing:

    • yankeefan91 Arod fan

doesnt arod own this guy i think he has like 5 or more homeruns against ortiz

    • Mike A.

That was like one game where they couldn’t hit Ortiz. He’s got a 4.17 ERA and 1.39 WHIP against the Yanks in 14 career appearances against them (10 starts).

Surpised there’s no interesting Dominican prospects for the Yankees.Hopefully the Caribbean will get back to it’s glory days when Willie Mays,Mickey Mantle,Roberto Clemente, Josh Gibson and Pedro Cepeda played.

Some Puerto Rican players were gonna play but because of the WBC there aren’t to many players in the Caribbean series.

    • Tom Zig

Melvin Croussett isn’t playing? Can someone go to the DR and find him? or at least take a picture of him. I’m picturing a lefty Edwar Ramirez

      • Andy In Sunny Daytona

You could take a picture of his face of course, but modern photography equipment cannot record his arm in its pitching motion. His arm speed is just too fast.

  • Manimal

This guy Brad Knox has a great hammer curve, I’m surprised to see his 5.00+ ERA in the minors for the A’s AAA affiliate.

  • Mike A.

Heh, I love how there’s absolutely no sign of plate discipline in this game. What’s the old saying, you don’t walk off the island?

  • UWS

I just want to say one thing:

All you people who get MLB Network and can watch real live baseball suck and I hate all of you.

    Thank you. Carry on.

    • yankeefan91 Arod fan

    • whozat

Is it really that hard to break your thoughts up by hitting ‘.’ after each?
Or even a return would be welcome. Just something.
