  1. Stryker says:

yes, yes he did. like i said in that last thread, at this point in the game you give the finger to the matchups. pavano was rolling.

  2. JobaWockeeZ says:

Yeah the Indians bullpen has been bad. Let’s knack on a few runs.

  3. Drew says:

Who’s up for a shot of JD?

  4. Accent Shallow says:

So, when does Wang go back to the rotation? On the next turn through? Or does he not yet have the stamina to get deep into games, and needs more work out of the pen?

I’m very encouraged by how Hughes threw the ball today, but not so much the results. I can see Wang back to the rotation on the next turn.

    • Drew says:

Andy Pettitte is a starting pitcher!!!1!1
      ATROCIOUS!!!

    • whozat says:

I think you get past Wednesday, and then figure it out. Wang might start that game, but if Andy’s good to go…then you have to make a call. I mean, Andy might tweak the back in his bullpen session tomorrow, and now all of a sudden Wang takes his slot while Andy gets a DL stint.

    • Zack says:

Wang needs another good inning today, then 3 more good innings backing up Pettite against Texas. He wont make his return against Boston or TB- I’m looking for him to start against the Nationals during June 16-18

  5. LiveFromNewYork says:

Wedge got wind of the swish beat up pavano game strategy.

  6. Mike Axisa says:

    I love it. Thanks Wedgie.

  7. JobaWockeeZ says:

Yeah thanks for taking Pavano out!!

  8. IndyFan says:

DAMON i love it. bring them home tex

  9. pc69 says:

Pavano just reaggravated his buttock, he will be on the DL for 60 days.

  10. Accent Shallow says:

    Really? Is this necessary?

  11. yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

i love it come on tex.

  12. Jamal G. says:

2005 Aaron Small = 2009 Omir Santos. Let’s just hope he hits long enough so that the Mets fully commit to him (like trading Ramon Castro, hah!) and then he returns to Earth.

  13. Charlie says:

wish he left him in, cause tex has been better from the right

  14. IndyFan says:

ok no more swings like that please.

  15. mustang says:

Come Tex I want wang to get the win baby

  16. Pete says:

Probably knew he was in trouble and didn’t want to give Yanks the satisfaction of pounding him any further…

  17. 27 this year says:

Didn’t both the Rafeals blow the game for Pavano last time we versed them?

  18. Mike Axisa says:

Heh, this decision is going great for Eric Wedge.

  19. whozat says:

    Wow, Wedge…it just gets WORSE.

  20. Accent Shallow says:

    Did Betancourt just pull something?

This is why you don’t pull your starter just to play matchups!

  21. 27 this year says:

    who’s injured?

  22. Drew says:

    love it.

  23. Mike Axisa says:

He should go straight to Kerry Wood here. Let’s see if Wedge learned his lesson.

  24. Arman Tamzarian says:

He was still stretching when he got to the mound, maybe he should have informed his coach that he couldn’t get loose?

  25. Jamal G. says:

Can they go to anybody other than Jensen Lewis here? Does Wedge have the balls, or the audacity, to go to Kerry Wood for the five-fingered save?

  26. 27 this year says:

lets go Teixiera! Just a single here ties it!

  27. Drew says:

    Let’s get that ERA up.

  28. Axl says:

The Indians are the Yankees of a month ago…you see one injury and then it’s a domino effect…

  29. Jacob says:

    TEX!!!

  30. yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

    niceeeeeeeeeeee

  31. JobaWockeeZ says:

    TEIX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  32. Drew says:

    Love me some Teix

  33. IndyFan says:

i just went from six to midnight!!!!!!!!1

  34. Accent Shallow says:

Man, I thought that was gonna be caught. Not bad, Tex.

So glad Pavano isn’t going to get the win.

  35. James K says:

I’m surprised to be watching this game and not witnessing trillions of bugs. Can someone explain the deal with the midges? Humid nights cause them to jump from the river?

  36. pc69 says:

    THANK YOU ERIC WEDGE!!!!!!!

  37. Mike Axisa says:

Awesome. Eric Wedge just effed Pavano in the aye.

  38. Ivan says:

    Yo luv this guy man.

  39. mustang says:

    I LOVE TEX….

  40. Jay says:

I’m still wondering why we didn’t resign the Giambino..

  41. Pete says:

Tex definitely sent a message there. ;-P~~~~

  42. Alex S says:

    TEX BABY!

  43. Jamal G. says:

    Big Fucking Texy.

  44. Arman Tamzarian says:

Isn’t this basically the same scenario as the last time Pavano pitched?

  45. Mark says:

    TEX!!!

  46. IndyFan says:

    dear pavano: Fuck your win.

  47. Jake says:

    eat it Pavano

  48. e mills says:

too early to start thinking MVP?

    • Mike Axisa says:

Yes. And Zack Greinke is the MVP right now.

      • e mills says:

I dunno perhaps you’re right about Tex, but I kind of think along the lines of the other major sports and think the MVP should come from a winning team. Not that the Royals won’t be there at the end, or the Yankees will be there, but yea ultimately it is probably too early

        • Jamal G. says:

I agree with that sentiment to a point. However, if a player is just head and shoulders above all else (i.e. 2008 Albert Pujols; currently 2009 Zack Greinke), they should not be punished for the suckitude of their 24 teammates.

  49. Pete says:

Yankees talking to Pavano like Deniro in Raging Bull – “You never got me down, Carl. You never got me down!!!”

  50. Jamie says:

Maybe if Carl actually pitched how he did today when he was with the Yanks, he would have enjoyed having a certain best closer of all time saving his games….. instead of these schwoogs

  51. John says:

    BUST! He’s still not hitting .300 or OBP’ing .400

  52. Dan12 says:

tex= player of the month in the american league…hes gotta be right

  53. e mills says:

    I hope we see 2007 Cano…

  54. Drew says:

    C’mon Robbie

  55. SouthernYankeeFan says:

who comes out to pitch the 8th for the yanks?

  56. Jay says:

Not at the first pitch robbie…

  57. Accent Shallow says:

So, does Wang pitch the 8th here, now that the Yankees have tied it up? What if they take the lead?

I’m guessing he’s out, although I haven’t seen any shots of someone in the pen . . .

    • Arman Tamzarian says:

I don’t see why not, he’s looked great, almost everything’s been on the ground, and he’s been pretty efficient.

  58. Jake says:

all we need is a base knock

  59. Jamie says:

Are the uniforms that cleveland are wearing today their 2009 home unis?

  60. John says:

    cmon Robbie just a single

  61. Accent Shallow says:

Robbie, why are you tapping at the would-be ball 3?

  62. James K says:

I would bet Cano would swing at a pitch out. Has he walked yet in his career?

  63. Jamie says:

    Herges = Mitchell Report

  64. Jake says:

    Still a good AB Robbie

  65. Drew says:

Where’s Melky! We need a comeback

  66. V says:

Cano didn’t see a single strike in that AB.

    • Accent Shallow says:

I’m more upset about the pitch he fouled off before grounding out. That was pretty clearly ball 3, and the following pitch would have resulted in a walk.

    • whozat says:

Yah…Would’ve done better to keep his bat on his shoulder.

  67. James K says:

    Coke in the 8th?

  68. Jay says:

Dunno if anyone has said this yet, but doesn’t our bat boy look like Hideki Irabu??

Maybe he can pitch the 8th.

  69. John says:

how large is that Jeter “out” looming now?

  70. SouthernYankeeFan says:

Ok wang NONE OF THIS BS not right now.

  71. Accent Shallow says:

    Garko bunting? Really?

  72. JobaWockeeZ says:

Time to witness another failed and overrated sac bunt.

  73. James K says:

Shoppach 0-3, all k’s. No reason this guy isn’t an automatic out.

    • Steve H says:

His 123 OPS+ as a catcher last year begs to differ with you.

      • whozat says:

True…but the guy’s having a horrendous day at the plate and hasn’t looked good up there.

        • Steve H says:

Yeah, but the reason that he’s not an automatic out is that, he’s not an automatic out. I’ll take the larger sample size of his whole career over the 3 ab’s today.

  74. Drew says:

I was a little worried about Wanger coming in after 3 pitching changes and an injury delay.

  75. Jay says:

    Big F’n K

  76. Jacob says:

Was that last pitch to Shoppach a sinker?

  77. Jay says:

Let’s touch up Wood, bring on Mo, it’s a wrap.

  78. pc69 says:

CMW is starting to get his form back. Ball has nice movement and is staying down more often than not. This is good news.

  79. James K says:

Even though no one scored, I’d be still be worried about Wang. He kept a lot of “sinking” fastballs way high and out of the zone. That can’t be a sign of progress.

    • Chip says:

Are you watching the same game the rest of us are? Every single swing and miss is a sinker low. He’s absolutely dealing right now. They’ve hit one ball out of the infield on the fly in three innings

      • whozat says:

That last inning he was pretty inconsistent. He left them all up to DeRosa, then had them down again to Shoppach, and then in that last AB they were all up again.

Hence the concern. I do think it has to do with endurance; when he gets tired he tends to drop off to the side and his pitches don’t sink so well.

    • Jackson says:

I think we were watching different games

    • John says:

can’t argue with the results tho

    • V says:

3rd inning. Looked like he was getting a little tired.

That’s probably why he’s not starting yet – he needs to build up the strength to go 6+ innings.

  80. mustang says:

What excuse are going to use NOW ??

    Wang’s back baby !!!!!

    • There’s nothing wrong with giving him a few more appearances out of the pen and getting Hughes another start. It’s not an excuse in the slightest. I don’t understand why you think it would be.

      • whozat says:

because mustang lives to see conspiracies everywhere. It’s not being conservative…it’s disrespecting Wang!

      • mustang says:

Oh yes anything to keep Mr. “Big three” hughes up. No bias what so ever. Wang is a 38 game winner number 2 starter when he is on and it looks like he is. He is being wasted in the pen in the mop up row.
The Yankees are a better team with Wang in the rotation when he is on the end.

        • Accent Shallow says:

Operative phrase there is “when he is on.” He looked good over those 3 innings, but is he ready to start? If the explanation for him being so horrible early in the year is that he wasn’t conditioned due to the foot injury, I can see giving him more time.

But yeah, when he’s right, he should bump Hughes, no question.

  81. Chip says:

Well that was the first sinker he’s really left up and he got away with it. I assume he pitches in the ninth if the Yankees don’t go ahead. Why not? The guy has been awesome thus far

  82. Drew says:

That down and in sinker to righties is just sick.

  83. zs190 says:

Shoppach looks like Shelly out there.

  84. handtius says:

    basehit, then a homerun…prediction.

  85. John says:

If the Yanks knock on Wood, they’ll win for sure.

  86. Steve H says:

Remember when everyone thought the Rays got a great deal getting Joyce for Jackson in the offseason? I know it’s still too early to judge, but damn has that worked out so far for the Tigers.

  87. Jamal G. says:

at is John Flaherty talking about? There is no way Kerry Wood has 14 years as a pro.

  88. Drew says:

    Swisher will not disappoint.

  89. James K says:

Would the MLB allow Matsui to take an AB while on a Segway?

  90. Accent Shallow says:

I’m so glad Wood is no longer capable of throwing that slurve he had 10 years ago. It was something halfway between Joba’s slider in ’07 and Hughes’ big curve, at 85-90 mph. Looked like a damn Wiffle ball.

  91. V says:

Swisher ain’t bunting, Kay, you fucking idiot.

  92. Jamal G. says:

You know, I’ve always been of the thought that you never pinch run for a good bat until they get in scoring position.

  93. Mike Axisa says:

Bunting so Gardner can drive him in? Fucking insane.

  94. yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

    great bunt.

  95. handtius says:

there goes my prediction….fucking retards. bunting.

  96. James K says:

Did Swisher just bunt? Is the pitcher going to hit too?

  97. Accent Shallow says:

I can sorta see bunting Swisher, since both him and Wood are strikeout oriented, but when the next hitter is Brett Gardner . . .

  98. Mike Axisa says:

These bunts are giving me a headache.

  99. E-ROC says:

Why would you have Swisher bunt when Wood just walked a batter? Misuse of talent there. Then you have Gardner swing!?

  100. Drew says:

    Wow!!!!

  101. James K says:

    Wow! Lucky hit.

  102. JobaWockeeZ says:

See? You didn’t need to bunt Garnder.

  103. Ivan says:

    Well it worked sorta.

  104. V says:

    Ok, that works, heh.

I have to send Gardner with Jeter batting though – no DPs, please.

  105. handtius says:

    HA

  106. rally caps says:

    Grit

  107. SouthernYankeeFan says:

ill take it lets go jorge.

  108. Mike Axisa says:

Maybe Girardi will have Jorge squeeze now.

  109. rally caps says:

    fearing a gidp

  110. Jackson says:

    Gardner needs to steal here

  111. Ivan says:

Gardner has to steal 2nd here.

  112. pc69 says:

    Got to send Gardner.

  113. Chip says:

I actually agree with that bunt. You had to make sure Posada got up in this inning

  114. V says:

You really have to send Gardner here to prevent the DP.

  115. Mike Axisa says:

Send Gardner then send Pena on the throw. That would be something.

  116. Drew says:

    Horrible call.

  117. Chip says:

WHOA how is that even close to a strike?

  118. V says:

    That pitch was high.

AND THERE’s THE DP GIRARDI YOU FUCKING IDIOT!!!

  119. SouthernYankeeFan says:

    FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

  120. e mills says:

what’s the point of Gardner if he doesn’t steal 2nd?

  121. Jacob says:

And that’s why you have to start Gardner there…

  122. Accent Shallow says:

    Argh.

  123. Ivan says:

    Great, just great.

  124. yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

damm posada all we needed was a sac fly.

    • Chip says:

He had to swing at that after the BS call on the pitch before. He should’ve been looking at a 3-1 count with a sure fastball coming

  125. JobaWockeeZ says:

    Cervelli could have done that.

  126. pc69 says:

    Girardi blew it.

No way Garder did not steal. God damit!

  127. Alex S says:

fucking jopo all he had to do was get the ball out of the IF

  128. James K says:

Girardi: WTF?! How do you not send Gardner?

Why not have Posada bunt while you’re at it? Or just let CMW pinch run for Gardner! WTF!!!!

  129. Jamal G. says:

I totally blame Brett Gardner – why didn’t he attempt to steal?

  130. handtius says:

what the fuck. you’ll bunt, but not send gadner? bull shlacka

  131. V says:

Girardi – that inning was why I no longer like you as a manager.

Absolute incompetence. I’d expect that out of Dusty Baker. But, damn. idiocy.

  132. Drew says:

I understand you don’t want to make the second out on a steal but come on…

  133. Bryan says:

What is the point of gardner on 1st if hes not going? Send him on the 2-1 count, stay out of the DP.

  134. Axl says:

Was it last year when Jorge Posada didn’t ground into a double play for like a long time before his first one?

  135. pc69 says:

So that is just stupid managing. You trade an out to advance the runner, then get your fastest man on 1st with less than one out. Old Mother Hubbard batting – no speed – and you don’t send the runner from 1st.

Just don’t get it. Bad bad decision.

  136. Jamal G. says:

Wait, why are we blaming Joe Girardi for Brett Gardner not attempting a steal?

  137. JeffG says:

That would have been a better swing if the hit and run was on… ah… crapo

  138. Jake K says:

    Well that sucked.

On the bright side, Hughes has a 21/3 K/BB ratio in his past three games.

  139. Drew says:

    Aysh.. now coke is in.

  140. pc69 says:

That decision by Girardi could save the dumbass move by Wedge.

    Fuck!

    Cmon Coke!

  141. JeffG says:

Are they going to plan to stretch Wang out or do they not see him as a starter anymore?

  142. rally caps says:

    why phil coke?

  143. rally caps says:

    WHY PHIL COKE

  144. James K says:

    This is bad news bears.

  145. V says:

Ugh. After that BB, I fear a walkoff.

  146. SouthernYankeeFan says:

    damnit throw fucking strikes. WTF

  147. Drew says:

I think Coke has the -itis.

  148. rally caps says:

the yankees WILL score in the 10th with the top of the order and no cleveland pitching left to speak of. so why no mo?

  149. James K says:

If Eric Wedge outmanages Girardi I might just lose it.

  150. rally caps says:

    dumb

  151. Chip says:

Wow, I guess Girardi really wants to get Coke some work in

  152. Accent Shallow says:

Coke makes me nervous. Luckily their top of the order isn’t much.

  153. Jamal G. says:

You know how you know your home crowd sucks? When the opposing pitcher throws over to first base and you don’t hear any boos.

  154. whozat says:

Man, this ump is not calling the bottom of the zone at ALL.

  155. JobaWockeeZ says:

Thanks for the free out. Again we’ll witness a bunting failure.

  156. Jake says:

    high leverage enough for yall?

  157. Drew says:

    Oh fuck.

  158. V says:

    :gulp:

Robertson – this is a big spot, boy.

  159. V says:

    :gulp:

Robertson – this is a big spot, boy.

  160. handtius says:

Robertson strikes out the next 2 batters.

  161. John says:

everytime we blow good chances to score in tie games, we lose…or so it seems.

  162. Chip says:

Well for you people wanting Robertson in a big spot, here it is!

  163. Marc says:

At the very least, Pavano doesn’t get the W from the game. That was really my primary goal of the game. I’d love a W on our side, but as long as that shitbag Pavano doesn’t get it…!

  164. Call me crazy, but with the winning run in scoring position, don’t you want your best guy out there?

  165. E-ROC says:

Would you have let Wang continue pitching, or make the switch that Girardi did? I’m not questioning the move. Just curious.

  166. Matt-Pitt says:

    C’mon D-Rob.

  167. V says:

    Pitch 1 was a strike.

  168. Matt-Pitt says:

Where is this Ump’s strike zone?

  169. Drew says:

    Don’t walk him. Mmkay?

  170. handtius says:

this ump needs some glasses…or to stop drinking gin between inning.

  171. e mills says:

    Veras could’ve done that

  172. Jake says:

    just settin up the DP

  173. D says:

    Walk the lead off guy?

  174. Matt-Pitt says:

Walk isn’t the worse thing in the world… I’ll take a DP ball now.

  175. James K says:

    Double play?

  176. handtius says:

    walks walks walks….boo hoo hoo.

  177. rally caps says:

If this isn’t a save situation then i don’t know what is!

  178. Drew says:

    Mo would be ideal.

  179. V says:

    :gulp:

    Not feeling good.

  180. pc69 says:

Must be very muggy in Cleveland today. There is just some fucking stupid managing going on.

Girardi must be trying to save Wedge’s job.

  181. Drew says:

    Dude. WTF!

  182. Pete says:

    A strike would be peachy.

  183. Stryker says:

    paging robertson’s control….

  184. Jacob says:

    Robertson is getting squeezed.

  185. handtius says:

    needs me some strikes.

  186. rally caps says:

does joe girardi realize how idiotic he is managing? or does he not care?

  187. Hova says:

God damn it. Mo and Aceves. That’s it? Those are the only guys we can trust? Come on BP. Step up!

  188. Drew says:

    sittin dead red/

  189. pc69 says:

    Well shit.

  190. yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

    fuck

  191. Accent Shallow says:

Argh. At least Pavano didn’t get the win.

  192. handtius says:

balls on my chin, that sucks.

  193. EDUB says:

This was one of the worst managed games I’ve seen all year

  194. SouthernYankeeFan says:

so in the future if girardi doesn’t bring robertson in a big spot we now know why.

  195. Pete says:

INDIANS WIN THE PENNANT!!! INDIANS WIN THE PENNANT!!! INDIANS WIN THE PENNANT!!! INDIANS WIN THE PENNANT!!!

    Wait, no?

  196. Jay says:

    My tv just committed suicide.

  197. D says:

    Robertson? Really?

  198. JobaWockeeZ says:

Great so B-Jobbers are going to all over this game.
Our lead over the AL East if Boston wins which it looks liek will be cut to .5 games.

  199. Alex S says:

this game was lost when gardener didn’t steal

  200. JeffG says:

The same way they pulled Pavano I think we did the same by taking out Wang… bad move.

  201. V says:

    Thanks, Joe.

Absolutely stupid managing, Joe “Dusty Baker” Girardi.

    Fucking idiot.

  202. Chip says:

I can’t really complain about that, I mean the guy pulled one down the line on a pitch right on the black. Yankees still played a damn fine game outside of that Posada DP

    • Pasqua says:

It’s not so much the hit down the line that’s frustrating, it’s the inability by both Coke and Robertson to throw strikes leading up to that hit down the line that should drive us all insane.

    • Drew says:

I guess, but when you’re sitting dead red on a fastball it’s not too hard to pull an inside pitch.

  203. John says:

    worst ninth inning this year!!!

Posada double play and then walk the damn leadoff guy

  204. Drew says:

This pen is really pathetic. Can we pleaseeeee make a move?

    • JobaWockeeZ says:

Call up Melancon. Hopefully he can be the saving grace of the bullpen.

      • Stryker says:

and then when melancon gives up a hit or two in high leverage situations who are you gonna ask for?

        • Drew says:

IT’s not about giving up a hit. WALKS WALKS WALKS.

          • Stryker says:

the situation stays – say melancon’s control/command aren’t where they should be….like his previous trip up to the bigs. then what are you gonna want the yankees to do?

bullpens are very volatile. they can be lights out one time and suck it up the next. with the wealth of arms the yankees have it’s all about finding the right combination of guys to be successful. it doesn’t help that 5/7 of the opening day bullpen are either hurt or sent down. getting marte and bruney back will be HUGE for the bullpen.

            • Drew says:

I know, but right now, we have two guys that Joe has confidence in. One is used as a long man and the other is our closer. These walks are piling up and always seem to burn us. We need to find some consistency.

        • JobaWockeeZ says:

I’m going to shoot in the dark but, do you want Joba in the pen?

    • Stryker says:

and what move would you like the yankees to make? come on. people were clamoring for robertson to get another call up and now people want them to make ANOTHER move. what else is there to do?

      • Drew says:

Give me a break. I’m not Cashman, I don’t know, make a trade, call up someone who can throw strikes, do something.

      • With the winning run in scoring position you go to Mo. You can’t save him for a lead which might never come.

      • Ed says:

Exactly, Robtertson pitched well last night and if that last hit was right at Arod they turn two and go to the top of the 10th. Sometimes things don’t go your way.

  205. rally caps says:

adhering to the stupid idea that mo can only come in once we have a lead cuz you know that’s when there’s a save situation. Mo is 38? Well fine. Guess that means we should bust out the “Mo Rules”

  206. pc69 says:

    Dear Joe,

I want to thank you for taking the pressure off of me.

    Your pal,

    Eric Wedge.

  207. manimal says:

It happens. Gardner should have been stealing but whatever, not a big deal. If Jeter was called safe, like the replay showed, Mariano would have been there in the 9th.

  208. Axl says:

Oh well…the B-team Indians (missing all 3 of their best hitters) beat our A-team. What are you going to do…

  209. Hova says:

They executed on their lead-off walk, we didn’t. Fcuk.

  210. Matt-Pitt says:

I’d rather get blown out than sit through a game like this. A move as simple as sending Gardner, probably wins them the game. As somebody who is not opposed to Girardi, I am very livid with that man right now. Just a really poorly managed game.

    • Zack says:

Or you keep Gardner at 1st and leave a whole to the right side of the field for Posada

      • Matt-Pitt says:

Or you send Gardner, stay out of the double play and the possible winning run scores anyway with a runner at 3rd and 1 out.

  211. Bryan says:

There is no reason why we should not have won this game…. oh wait there is, Joe not sending Gardner.

  212. Ed says:

Bad way to end May. A few things 1. Not getting Tex in after he hit the double that would have been a nail in the coffin. 2. At some point Gardner has to go when it’s first and third. Even if he is out there is still a man on third and Posada at the plate. 3. Gotta throw strikes.

    • Pasqua says:

#3 trumps #1 and #2 any day. It’s the basic rule. No hit with a RISP happens, not sending a runner happens, but when not throwing strikes happens, you ain’t winning…ever.

  213. Jackson says:

You know, I’ll take 1 run in 4 innings from the bullpen every time. If they scored that 1 run in the 6th or 7th everyone would be complaining about the offense not getting the job done, but because they scored the run in the 9th the bullpen sucks and Girardi is an idiot. I don’t think this loss is on the bullpen personally.

    • Chip says:

Thank you, they actually looked pretty good today from what I saw. They had a ton of unlucky breaks in the A-Rod scorcher that hit high off the wall, the Jeter being called out and the laser that Gardner hit to first. Sure there was the Gardner liner to center which is possibly the hardest defensive play in baseball, the lack of stealing 2nd and the lead off walk by Coke but games like this happen. We’re in first place with Joba going tomorrow, buck up people!

  214. James K says:

I wonder if LeBron is available for comment.

    • NHYankee62 says:

Heh, that really doesn’t say much for Lebron.

I remember Jeter being accountable and answering all questions after Boston won Game 7 in Yankee Stadium in 2004.

Has Espn let Lebron have it for this? Especially after the way they’ve worshipped him all year?

  215. Alex S says:

    very sad loss

  216. boobie says:

wang needs innings, he was only at 42 pitches, he had just thrown 3 scoreless. Frustrating game to say the least, and Gardner better have a “sore hammy” after the game. No other reason why he shouldn’t of gone.

  217. NHYankee62 says:

Girardi makes me want Torre back……. and I hated Torre!

  218. D says:

How can people give a pass to this loss? Horrendous job by girardi coke n robertson

    • NHYankee62 says:

Hope Coke knows his “role” now!

      It’s to throw FUCKING strikes!!!!!

Even if you give up a HR to the leadoff guy, much better than walking him!!!

    • Jackson says:

How about a horrendous job by the Damon, Teixeira and ARod for not getting a runner home after a leadoff double. Or a horrendous job by Gardner not stealing second or misplaying a ball in center. Or a horrendous job by the umpire costing a run. Or Phil Hughes’ not exactly stellar start.

This game is not on the bullpen, it’s just a loss, they happen.

      • NHYankee62 says:

True, but it still doesn’t take away from the fact that you need to throw strikes.

Nothing worse in baseball than walking the leadoff guy in the 9th.

After that kid had the nerve to open his mouth “I don’t know my role” he deserves to be criticized. Shut the fuck up and throw strikes.

  219. Hova says:

Man, I hope Bruney comes back healthy and stays healthy. Right now we only have two guys we can trust in high-leverage situations (Mo and Aceves). That might get us by in the regular season, but you can’t roll with that in the playoffs.

    • NHYankee62 says:

That’s why regardless of whether Bruney comes back or not, Cashman needs to make a trade for a decent setup guy.

I heard earlier this week they were looking at Greg Sherrill or Valverde.

      We need the insurance.

Plus doing so, will shut the B-Jobbers up,….well probably not.

      • Chip says:

Who are they going to trade for that’s going to be significantly better than Melancon?

        • NHYankee62 says:

Doesn’t matter. I hope Melancon is the real deal, but he’s unproven and too young.

Hell, even if the kid does great, they still need an extra arm… due to injuries…. depth etc.

Can never have enough pitching. Hopefully they can find someone without giving up too much. However, the time to get Melancon up here is now, stop fucking around with Veras.

        • Drew says:

Wait a second. Let’s see Melancon for a few innings before we start saying he’s better than a guy with over 100 saves and a career 1.1 whip. Melancon can be great, he can also be not so good, let’s see him get the call and make pitches.

      • Stryker says:

*George Sherrill….and he’s awful. he’s no better than any of the in house relievers we have, in fact, he may be worse.

    • James K says:

With the exception of Melancon is there really any help we can bring up? What’s the alternative? Houston Street? They’d probably ask a lot for him too.

    • cult of basebaal says:

Actually, I’d say it’s the opposite. You can ride a couple of relievers in the playoffs, because of the off days.

Over the grind of a long season, you need more than that.

  220. Chip says:

Amazing how quickly everybody loses faith after one loss. People need to learn that pitchers don’t always have perfect control. I’m sure Coke didn’t go up there thinking, I think I’ll walk this guy. Robertson was fine walking a guy with a man on second. His last pitch was 92 mph right on the black. Sometimes you just have to tip your hat to the batter

    • JobaWockeeZ says:

Then again its the Yankees and a lot of people are expecting us to go undefeated. Sad really.

    • NHYankee62 says:

Wrong. As a MLB pitcher, you need to be able to throw strikes at this level. If you can’t, you don’t belong here.

Groove one over the middle and make him get a fucking hit instead of a free pass.

      • Arman Tamzarian says:

In Phil Coke’s press conference he stated “Sometimes on Sunday afternoons I just don’t feel like throwing strikes, I know I’m supposed to, but I just want to walk a few batters to make it fun, what’s the problem?”

    • Drew says:

To me I take positives from the game like Wanger. Also Philly looked okay when he could’ve imploded.
Let’s not act like this bullpen talk is indicative of one game, it’s manifested itself of the first 49 games. No one is “losing faith,” we’re voicing our concerns.

      • Arman Tamzarian says:

I agree with that, the bullpen needs something, don’t know what it is because they’ve tried lots of different pitchers, with little success, but you’ve got to trust Cash to take care of this, he’s built a pretty good team.

  221. Arman Tamzarian says:

The problem with losses is that they are losses, and the reason that they are losses is that the things that go right in a win, don’t go right in a loss. Not every loss is a result of same mysterious break from expected patterns. Sometimes it just happens. When a team goes 162-0 then you can tell me a team shouldn’t lose games

    • Moshe Mandel says:

Agreed. Some of the reactions here during the game were ridiculous. Calling Joe an f’ing idiot? Really? I did not see one indefenseable decision today. Just because you dont agree with a decision does not make it wrong. There were things I would have done differently, but sometimes there are two right answers. I’ll go through them.
      1) Bunting with Swish- The reason most of us hate bunting is because it is playing for one run and giving up outs. But then one spot where a bunt might make sense is where you are playing for one, especially with a hitter in a bad stretch and Gardner playing fairly well recently. I would not have done it, but it is not necessarily a bad baseball move. Everyone just hears bunt and alarm bells go off.
2)Not sending Gardner- again, I would have sent him, but if he gets thrown out, you no longer score on an out. I wonder how high the odds of a DP there are compared to the odds of a caught stealing. I bet they are close.
      3) He should have gone to Mo in the 9th, but 98% of managers do not in that spot. Not an excuse, ju7st a fact of life, I’m not going to rip him for it.

  222. Jamal G. says:

Again, stop blaming Girardi every chance you get before the post-game, please.

    • Bob Stone says:

      I second that!

    • Jamal G. says:

Oh, nobody posted it: Girardi responded to Gardner’s non-steal attempt by simply saying, “That’s been addressed” twice.

    • Jamal G. says:

Gardner: “They wanted me to steal, I just didn’t go.” Again, stop blaming Girardi for stuff before we get the information.

      • NHYankee62 says:

Sounds like an excuse to me. I’d rather take my chances on Gardy getting thrown out.

Girardi has to make it clear…. go on the first pitch or two in that situation. Simply can’t risk the DP.

And Gardy needs to learn how to steal off relievers better. Let’s be honest, if he can’t utilize his speed, he’s not exactly helping the team too much.

        • What don’t you understand about “they wanted me to go?” They did want to take their chances. Unfortunately, Mick Kelleher can’t go out and give Gardner a shove to get him started.

          • NHYankee62 says:

What’s the job of a manager?

Are we supposed to be at the mercy of Gardner’s judgment. This isn’t rocket science.

THe only reason he’s on this team is for his speed. If he can’t steal in those situations, he has no place on the team.

We’re talking about stealing off Kerry Fucking Wood here. Go on the 2nd pitch at the latest.

Girardi needs Gardner to realize that.

            • Nady Nation says:

Come on man. What the hell else could Girardi have done? Called timeout and implored Gardner to steal? The steal sign was on.

  223. JeffG says:

If you’re listening to the post game I think it sounds like Gardy missed a sign or was just being too conservative.

  224. dre says:

how about not waiting 4 days before pitching coke…

    • Jamal G. says:

How about stop reaching for every little thing to blame on Joe Girardi? You wanted a high-leverage pitcher pitching in a blowout game last night? Weren’t all of you down Girardi’s throat for doing the same shit in Texas when the Yanks had the 11-0 lead and he put in Alfredo Aceves in the 9th?

      • dre says:

sure give him an inning of work. no Girardi wasted our second best bullpen weapon in the 9 inning blowout..he could have waited another to pitch aceves

  225. Spaceman.Spiff says:

To be fair, imagine if this happened. Gardner on first, man on third, one out, Posada up at bat. Gardner tries to steal second and gets nailed out on a perfect throw. Posada flies out to deep right field right after. We’d all be crucifying Girardi for taking a chance and making the second out with a man on third. Let’s just try to keep a level head and remember no manager will make the right move all the time.

    • NHYankee62 says:

If that happens, then so be it. You have to make the plays that give you best chance to win.

Honestly, what were the odds of Gardner getting thrown out?

Much, much less than Posada grounding into a DP.

That’s the fundamental job as a manager, make the moves that give the team the highest chance to win. Girardi didn’t do that today.

I don’t care about the “Gardy waited to long to go excuse” either. If that’s the case, then that’s also on Girardi. He needs to make Gardner realize that he has to steal sooner in that situation, period.

      • Jamal G. says:

What in the fuck is so hard to understand that they told Brett Gardner to steal and he just didn’t? I am absolutely dumbfounded that you can’t understand that they told the dude to steal and he just did not move. What with this scenario leads you to blame Joe Girardi in any way?

  226. Bob Stone says:

Post Game Interview with Coke – He had the sign and just decided not to go – that sucks!

  227. dre says:

right hes been on the team the whole season and he missed a sign for 5 pitches..way to blame the team Joe..

  228. cuponoodles says:

    A few thoughts:

Eternally frustrating loss. I know the Yankees are banging on all cylinders now, and it’s awesome to see how they came back, but this loss killed me (especially how it was one of the few I actually get to watch on TV being across the country)

Honestly, I like how Hughes is shaping up. Some bloop hits and a few mistakes, but I’d like to see him for another turn.

The running Jeter out (where he was clearly safe via replay) before Tex hit the HR was really a game-changer, and that call really came back to hurt us, via the score. Otherwise, the ultimate killer was the Jorge double play, after a bad high strike call by the ump and Gardner’s non-steal.

You’d also have to consider putting Mo in after Coke’s leadoff walk (control being something the entire bullpen has to work on). I’m a huge Robertson fan, but when the game’s on the line, you need your best reliever.

Either way, I’m beyond confident in a win tomorow, so 3-1 for a series on the road isn’t too bad.

*Also, has anyone else noticed how Yankee losses recently are really gritty affairs. They simply aren’t giving games away anymore, and that’s awesome to see.

  229. Tom Zig says:

The pieces were all in place, Posada’s DP killed it though. This falls on the players not the manager.

  230. Moose says:

    This loss fuckin sucked.

The Yankees had three GOLDEN opportunities to win the game, and they could never get the big hit.

8th inning – Tex on second with ONE OUT and Arod and Cano comin up….HOW DO YOU NOT GET HIM IN!

9th inning – …i dont even wana talk about it.

GOATS of the Game = Arod, Cano, Posado, Phil Coke.

What the fuck is up with Coke??? He fuckin sucks right now and is good for one of 2 things: walking guys, or giving up home runs. Whatta waste this guy has become. Looks like the league finally caught up to him and his hanging curveballs.

Gardner needs to get his head out of his ass as well. Assuming he blew the steal sign in the 9th, you can throw him on the Goat List as well. Gardner is a fun player to watch, but he either saves you or kills you…not exactly the kind of consistency we like to see.

Oh, and add Girardi on the Goat List as well – can someone please explain to me why in the hell he had Coke start the 9th with 4 RIGHT HANDED HITTERS COMING UP???? That move was beyond stupid.
